Abstract:A facile solvothermal method coupled with an annealing strategy is developed to synthesize Fe 3 O 4 /carbon (Fe 3 O 4 @C) magnetic composite microstructures with different morphologies, including flower-like, hollow spheres and egg-like. The unique multiporous and hollow structure of the as-prepared hierarchical Fe 3 O 4 @C hollow microsphere results in an appealing performance as an absorber of Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution, delivering a high capacity of ~ 197.2 mg/g. Meanwhile, the magnetic Fe 3 O 4 ‘‘core’’ in the hierarchical microstructures can be easily separated from aqueous systems by magnetic separation. Furthermore, the carbon layers effectively prevent the aggregation of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles. The excellent absorbing ability of Cr(VI) ions and easy separation process strongly suggest that the Fe 3 O 4 @C magnetic microstructures would have a great potential as adsorbing materials in the large-scale application in environmental purification.

Abstract:Carcinogenic arsenic pollution in ground water seriously threatens the health and lives of humans all over the world. It is highly desirable to fabricate new materials for sustainable arsenate removal with high capacities, stabilities and recyclabilities. In this study, we demonstrate that uniform magnetic core–shell structured Fe3O4@Resorcinol-Formaldehyde@mesoporous TiO2 microspheres (denoted Fe3O4@RF@mTiO2) can function as excellent adsorbents for the fast removal of arsenate (AsV) in acidic environments with very high efficiency. The mesoporous TiO2 outer shell (50 nm in thickness) endows them with a high surface area of 337 m2 g−1 and a large pore volume of 0.42 cm3 g−1, thus resulting in a fast adsorption rate (1.16 g mg−1 h−1) and a high adsorption capacity (up to 139 mg g−1) calculated using the Langmuir model at a pH of 3. The inner Fe3O4 core (130 nm in diameter) makes separation facile from wastewater using a magnet. Moreover, the hydrophobic properties of the RF interlayer (10 nm in thickness) are increased after calcination at 200 °C, and this can protect the inner Fe3O4 cores against etching from acid solutions over long cycles. In addition, the study of the AsV adsorption mechanism on the core–shell mesoporous Fe3O4@RF@mTiO2 microspheres shows the existence of electrostatic forces and surface complexation interactions between arsenate and partially crystallized TiO2. Benefiting from all of these advantages, the multilayer magnetic core–shell structured design is expected to be a promising nanomaterial for long-term wastewater treatment.

Abstract:An adsorbent with deep-treatment ability and high selectivity for arsenic removal is strongly in need in water treatment. A new composite structure combining ultrasmall (sub-2 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been prepared here. In this structure, ultrasmall (sub-2 nm) hydrous ferric oxide nanoparticles (HFeO) were in-situ generated inside a Fe-based MOF (MIL-100) through a room-temperature reduction process. The structure, denoted as HFeO@MIL-100, demonstrates extraordinary adsorption ability for As (V), with a high capacity and more than 20 times faster kinetics than that of MIL-100. More importantly, it can deeply treat As (V) in contaminated water from 3900 mu gL(-1) to 5 mu g L-1, directly meeting the WHO drinking water standard (< 10 mu g L-1). And due to the size-exclusion effect of uniform micropores originated from MOFs, the structure performs high anti-interference ability in As (V) adsorption, maintaining more than 97% capacity even within abundant competitive ions or species, such as humic acid, silicate and sulfate ions.

Abstract:Contaminated groundwater with a high concentration of arsenic continues to pose health threats to millions of people worldwide, especially in Asia. As(III) is the dominant arsenic species in groundwater, and is more toxic, soluble, and mobile than As(V). Affected communities need accessible technologies to remove As(III) from drinking water, especially in rural areas. In this study, a strategy is adopted to assemble small-sized magnetic MnFe2O4 nanocrystal building blocks to form mesoporous clusters (NCs) with the advantage of increasing the magnetization while retaining superparamagnetic characteristics by using a solvothermal method, which is beneficial for efficient separation from treated water by a moderate magnetic field. The MnFe2O4 NCs combined with uniform mesoporous structure and small constituent nanocrystals (about 8-12 nm in size) provides a synergistic effect for enhanced adsorption performance toward As(III) with an adsorption capacity (>27.27 mg g(-1)) under neutral conditions. The analysis of Fourier transformed infrared spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrates that the adsorption of As(III) on MnFe2O4 NCs is through the formation of a surface complex.

Abstract:Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell structured nanoparticles are promising candidates for adsorption of heavy metal ions from waste water due to their high adsorption capacities and feasible recycling process. However, their practical applications have been hindered by the trade-off between the magnetic separation efficiency and durability. In this study, we demonstrate the preparation of amino-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 absorbents with both high magnetic separation efficiencies and durability in strong acidic environment. Our key strategy was to use a thin but highly protective silica layer by manipulating the sol-gel chemistry. With the protection of a thin but poorly permeable silica shell, the durability of the Fe3O4 in strong acid solution was significantly enhanced while its magnetic separation efficiency was maintained. We also demonstrated the adsorption of Cu2+ from aqueous solution corresponded well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The adsorption capacity can be further improved by coating an additional layer of mesoporous SiO2 outside Fe3O4@SiO2. The design of highly durable magnetic absorbents without sacrificing the magnetic separation efficiency greatly facilitates the practical applications of magnetic nanoparticles in adsorption of heavy metal ions.

Abstract:To obtain adsorbents with high As(V) removal capacity and quick magnetic separation simultaneously, we have fabricated maghemite (γ-Fe(2)O(3)) and magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) chestnutlike hierarchical nanostructures (CHNs) with strong ferromagnetic property by annealing the Fe(2)O(3) chestnutlike amorphous core/γ-phase shell hierarchical nanoarchitectures (CAHNs) at different temperatures in a nitrogen atmosphere. Compared to the Fe(2)O(3) CAHNs, the saturated magnetization of the as-obtained γ-Fe(2)O(3) CHNs is enhanced over 10 times, while the As(V) removal capacity is maintained 74% and reaches 101.4 mg·g(-1). Both of the as-obtained γ-Fe(2)O(3) and Fe(3)O(4) CHNs can be separated simply and rapidly from treated water by magnetic separation after As(V) adsorption treatment. The As(V) adsorption process of the as-obtained γ-Fe(2)O(3) CHNs obeys well the Freundlich isotherm model rather than the Langmuir one, suggesting that a multilayered adsorption occurs on the surface of the γ-Fe(2)O(3) CHNs. Taking advantages of the high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate and quick magnetic separation from treated water, the γ-Fe(2)O(3) CHNs developed in the present study is expected to be an efficient magnetic adsorbent for As(V) removal from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:A facile ammonia-atmosphere pre-hydrolysis post-synthetic route that can uniformly and selectively deposit Fe(2) O(3) nanoparticles in the predefined mesopores (5.6 nm) of a bimodal (2.3, 5.6 nm) mesoporous carbon matrix is demonstrated. The mesoporous magnetic Fe(2) O(3) @C encapsulates show excellent performance for arsenic capture with remarkable adsorption capacity, fast uptake rate, easy magnetic separation, and good cyclic stability.

Abstract:The remediation of combined pollution of heavy metals and antibiotics in an aqueous environment remains challenging. Through magnetite (Fe3O4) dispersion followed by sulfonation modification, we report a novel bifunctional biochar-based composite (labeled Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H) for simultaneous removal of arsenite (As(III)) and tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions. Batch experiments in single-solute systems show that Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H exhibits faster kinetic and higher adsorption capacity than raw biochar, Fe3O4, and magnetite-dispersed biochar (Fe3O4@BC), thus leading to enhanced removal efficiency for either As(III) or TC. More notably, Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H can simultaneously remove above 85% of As(III) and TC compared with less than 50% removal of As(III) and TC by biochar, Fe3O4, and Fe3O4@BC. Combining the spectroscopic analyses, the co-removal process of As(III) and TC indicates a unique mechanism with two-stage reactions, which involves As(III) redox transformation in the first stage and TC adsorption in the second stage. This study proposes a new strategy to design biochar-based composites for the decontamination of As(III) and TC. Overall, the excellent performance and stability of Fe3O4@BC<bold>-</bold>SO3H show its substantial potential as a low-cost, highly efficient, and eco-friendly material for the remediation of combined pollution in water.

Abstract:Well-ordered, hollow, magnetic, high specific surface area composites have recently received enormous attention for the treatment of pollutants containing heavy metal ions. Herein, a serious of magnetic chestnut shell-like hollow sphere structure composites (NiOx/Ni@C) were derived via pyrolyzing a MOF containing nickel as self-sacrificed template and served as adsorbent materials for arsenic(V) (As(V)) removal from aqueous solutions. The experimental results indicated that the adsorption capacity of NiO/Ni@C400 towards As(V) (454.94 mg/g) was higher than that of Ni@C600 (342.77 mg/g), Ni@C500 (290.89 mg/g), NiO@C300 (210.40 mg/g), and NiMOFs (133.93 mg/g), which could be ascribed to NiO/Ni@C400-rich oxygen-containing functional groups and high specific surface area. The NiO/Ni@C400 had a high magnetization intensity and could be easily separated under external magnetic field. In addition, the NiO/Ni@C400 had an excellent As(V) removal performance over a broad pH range from 1 to 10. The significant adsorption capacity and reusability of the NiO/Ni@C400 coupled with the easy separation property indicated that the NiO/Ni@C400 has great potential in As(V) purification industry.
Arsenic removal from water by nanometer iron oxide coated single-wall carbon nanotubes

Abstract:Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were prepared by arc discharge evaporation of a carbon electrode containing Fe catalyst so that there are an amount of iron nanoparticles attached tightly on SWCNTs. The iron oxide nanoparticle coated SWCNT composite was prepared in situ by oxidizing the above as-grown SWCNTs in air at 350°C, which was used as an adsorbent for As5+ removal from water. It was found that the maximum As5+ adsorption capacity of the composite was 42.30mgg−1 at pH8 and 49.65mgg−1 at pH4, respectively. The kinetics data were best fitted with a pseudo-second order, thus suggesting chemical adsorption on the surface and pores of iron oxide nanoparticles. The adsorption isotherm obtained at pH8 was best fitted to the Freundlich model, therefore a non-ideal adsorption on heterogeneous surfaces for As5+ ions on iron oxide nanoparticles was proposed. The firm web structure with high adsorption capacity makes the composite a promising adsorbent for arsenic removal in contaminated water.
One-Step Preparation of Chitosan-Based Magnetic Adsorbent and Its Application to the Adsorption of Inorganic Arsenic in Water

Abstract:Chitosan is a kind of biodegradable natural polysaccharide, and it is a very promising adsorber material for removing metal ions from aqueous solutions. In this study, chitosan-based magnetic adsorbent CMC@Fe3O4 was synthesized by a one-step method using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and ferric salts under relatively mild conditions. The Fe3O4 microspheres were formed and the core–shell structure of CMC@Fe3O4 was synthesized in the meantime, which was well characterized via SEM/TEM, XRD, VSM, FT-IR, thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA), XPS, size distribution, and zeta potential. The effects of initial arsenic concentration, pH, temperature, contact time, and ionic strength on adsorption quantity of inorganic arsenic was studied through batch adsorption experiments. The magnetic adsorbent CMC@Fe3O4 displayed satisfactory adsorption performance for arsenic in water samples, up to 20.1 mg/g. The optimal conditions of the adsorption process were pH 3.0, 30−50 °C, and a reaction time of 15 min. The adsorption process can be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting that chemisorption was main rate-controlling step. The Langmuir adsorption model provided much higher correlation coefficient than that of Freundlich adsorption model, indicating that the adsorption behavior is monolayer adsorption on the surface of the magnetic adsorbents. The above results have demonstrated that chitosan-based magnetic adsorbent CMC@Fe3O4 is suitable for the removal of inorganic arsenic in water.

Abstract:This work aims at exploring a novel environment-friendly nanomaterial based on natural clay minerals for arsenic removal in aqueous samples. Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were selected as the substrate with Mn oxides loaded on the surface to enhance its arsenic adsorption ability and then grafted onto the SiO 2 -coated Fe 3 O 4 microsphere to get a just enough magnetic performance facilitating the material's post-treatment. The prepared composite (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs) was extensively characterized by various instruments including Fourier transform infrared spectroscope (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscope (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Batch experiments were carried out to get the optimum test conditions for arsenic adsorption by the composite, including pH, loading amount of Mn oxides, adsorbent dosage, and the co-existing ions. The adsorption of As III and As V on Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs were both well fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model as well as the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model revealing the chemisorption between arsenic and Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 @Mn-HNTs. The adsorption process of As III and As V were both endothermic and spontaneous displayed by the thermodynamic study. The capacities of the prepared composite are 3.28 mg g −1 for As III and 3.52 mg g −1 for As V , respectively, which are comparable or better than those of many reported materials in the references. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) tests were carried out to access the secondary environmental risk of the composite and showed that it was quite environmentally stable and can be safely disposed. The composite was successfully applied in environmental water samples indicating its great potential applicability in future.

Abstract:Iron-manganese binary oxides (FeMnOx) can remove contaminants from aqueous solutions with high efficiency, and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) is widely used as a supporting material due to its large specific surface area and good stability. In this study, SBA-15 was used to support FeMnOx in the synthesis of a novel arsenic (As) adsorbent (FeMnOx/SBA-15), and its characteristics under different reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, presence of competing ions, and humic acid, were tested. The results showed that the contaminant adsorption efficiency of the novel adsorbent was better than that of bare FeMnOx, as the addition of SBA-15 decreased the agglomeration effect of FeMnOx. Additionally, FeMnOx/SBA-15 underwent calcination to further enhance its performance. The state of iron and manganese in FeMnOx/SBA-15 and the corresponding arsenic removal efficiency were improved by calcination at 350 degrees C with an FeMnOx/SBA-15 mass fraction of approximately 45%. Almost 90% of As (50 mL, 5.0 mg L-1) could be removed by 0.2 g L-1 of FeMnOx/SBA-15 (mass ratio of 45% and calcination temperature of 350 degrees C). The FeMnOx/SBA-15 could regenerate and still be used after four consecutive cycles. The high As sorption capacity, ability to regenerate, and reusability of FeMnOx/SBA-15 confirmed that this adsorbent is promising for treating As-contaminated drinking water.

Abstract:Arsenic in water is currently a global concern due to the long-term exposure that could affect human health. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), CoFe2O4, and MnFe2O4 were successfully synthesized and applied to remove arsenic (As) from water. The MNPs were characterized using different techniques, such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET), and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The nanoscale size and the specific surface area achieved a fast, selective, and high As adsorption capacity. MNPs have a mesoporous structure with a mean pore diameter of 5 nm and a mean particle size of 30 nm. The adsorption capacity of these MNPs was determined through kinetic and equilibrium experiments, multilayer adsorption that obeyed the Freundlich model equation was observed, and the maximum adsorption capacities reached were 250 mg/g for CoFe2O4 and 230 mg/g for MnFe2O4. Furthermore, MNPs characteristics like regeneration and reuse, several pH tolerances, non-ion interference, and effective As removal from groundwater samples confirms the nanomaterials’ potential for future applications in water treatment systems combined with magnetic separation.

Abstract:Flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures were synthesized via a template-free microwave-assisted solvothermal method. All chemicals used were low-cost compounds and environmentally benign. These flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures had high surface area and abundant hydroxyl on their surface. When tested as an adsorbent for arsenic and chromium removal, the flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures showed excellent adsorption properties. The adsorption mechanism for As(V) and Cr(VI) onto flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures was elucidated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. The results suggested that ion exchange between surface hydroxyl groups and As(V) or Cr(VI) species was accounted for by the adsorption. With maximum capacities of 51 and 30 mg g(-1) for As(V) and Cr(VI), respectively, these low-cost flowerlike α-Fe(2)O(3) nanostructures are an attractive adsorbent for the removal of As(V) and Cr(VI) from water.
Polyethyleneimine stabilized nanoscale zero-valent iron-magnetite (Fe3O4@nZVI-PEI) for the enhanced removal of arsenic from acidic aqueous solution: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:Nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles have a high removal affinity toward arsenic. However, particle agglomeration and surface passivation hinder their practical application in wastewater treatment. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of an economically viable polyethyleneimine stabilized nZVI-magnetite (Fe3O4@nZVI-PEI) that exhibits a fast and efficient removal of arsenic (As(III/V)) from wastewater. Microstructure analyses by SEM and TEM indicated that PEI efficiently minimized particle agglomeration. The higher the point of zero charge (pHpzc) value of Fe3O4@nZVI-PEI (∼9.4) over bare Fe3O4@nZVI (∼8.2) is indicative of the role of PEI in the sorption of the arsenic species. The experimental results showed a removal efficiency of 95.8% for As(III) and 90.5% for As(V) at an optimum pH of 3.0. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order and the equilibrium isotherm data fitted to the Sips model with the superior maximum adsorption capacities of 572.40 mg/g for As(III) and 548.80 mg/g for As(V). FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses provided insight into the possible adsorption mechanism that arsenic is taken up by generating monodentate and bidentate inner-sphere complexes with -OH, electrostatic interactions with primary amines, and partial oxidation of As(III) to As(V). In contrast to Cl-, NO3-, and SO42-, PO43- showed a significant competitive effect on the sorption of both As(III/V) species. Overall, this work provides a practical and highly efficient approach for arsenic remediation in wastewater and contaminated soils, and simultaneously resolves the stabilization problems of nZVI nanoparticles.

Abstract:Magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles synthesized by a co-precipitation method at room temperature have been used to remove As(III) and As(V) from their aqueous solutions. The adsorption of As(III) or As(V) was found to be saturated within 30min and has been interpreted in terms of a Langmuir model at different temperatures. The adsorption capacities for As(III) reached 59.25, 67.02, and 74.83mg/g at 10, 30 and 50°C, respectively. For As(V), the adsorption capacities at these temperatures were 88.44, 95.37, and 105.25mg/g, respectively. The effects of pH and competing ions on the adsorption of arsenite and arsenate have also been examined. The adsorption capacity remained unchanged in the range of pH 3 to 11. The presence of Cl−, SO42-, and NO3- had no effect on the adsorption capacity. However, the presence of PO43-, which has a similar outer electronic structure to that of the arsenic species, led to a significant reduction in the adsorption capacity. It is concluded from FTIR and XPS analyses that chemical binding with OH on the adsorbent surface is responsible for the adsorption of As(III) and As(V). The saturated magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles could be recovered by applying a magnetic field of strength greater than 0.35T. Arsenic compounds were eluted from the magnetic adsorbent following treatment with 1m NaOH, leading to regeneration of the magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The nanoparticles retained over 40% of their initial adsorption capacity for arsenic compounds after 6 cycles.
A chrysotile-based Fe/Ti nanoreactor enables efficient arsenic capture for sustainable environmental remediation

Abstract:Iron-based materials for arsenic (As) immobilization in practical groundwater and soil remediation suffer from a low removal capacity and an insufficient long-term stability. Herein, a unique chrysotile-based nanoreactor has been developed by incorporating iron/titanium oxides into the cylindrical cavity of chrysotile (TiFe-Chy), providing sufficient internal reaction sites for As immobilization. Results reveal that the adsorption capacities of TiFe-Chy for As(III) and As(V) are considerably higher than the commonly used amendments, i.e., layered double hydroxide (LDH) and Phoslock®, respectively. More importantly, TiFe-Chy exhibits a strong anti-interference capability of As immobilization in soils compared to those commercial products due to this unique incorporation approach. Fixed-bed leaching experiments indciate that this TiFe-Chy nanoreactor can efficiently decrase the As(III) and As(V) concentrations by 81.8-87.3% within a period of ten years, significantly improving the long-term stability of As immobilization in soils. Life cycle assessment analysis reveals that TiFe-Chy can reduce negative environmental impacts (such as carbon emissions), resulting in a low cost for soils and groundwater remediation. The findings of this work open a new avenue for sustainable heavy metal(loid)s remediation in groundwater and soils.
