Abstract:The potential of porous diatom silica shells as a naturally abundant low-cost sorbent for the removal of arsenic in aqueous solutions was investigated in a batch study. The objective of this work was to chemically modify the silica shells of a diatom Melosira sp. with bifunctional (thiol and amino) groups to effectively remove arsenic in its toxic As(III) form (arsenite) predominant in the aquatic environment. Sorption experiments with this novel sorbent were conducted under varying conditions of pH, time, dosage, and As(III) concentration. A maximum adsorption capacity of 10.99 mg g-1 was achieved within 26 h for a solution containing 12 mg L-1 As(III) at pH 4 and sorbent dosage of 2 g L-1. The functionalized diatom silica shells had a surface morphological change which was accompanied by increased pore size at the expense of reduced specific surface area and total pore volume. As(III) adsorption was best fitted with the Langmuir-Freundlich model, and the adsorption kinetic data using pore surface diffusion model showed that both the external (film) and internal (intraparticle) diffusion can be rate-determining for As(III) adsorption. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that the thiol and amino groups potentially responsible for As(III) adsorption were grafted on the surface of diatom silica shells. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further verified that this unique sorbent proceeded via a chemisorption mechanism through the exchange between oxygen-containing groups of neutral As(III) and thiol groups, and through the surface complexation between As(III) and protonated nitrogen and hydroxyl groups. Results indicate that this functionalized bioadsorbent with a high As(III) adsorption capacity holds promise for the treatment of As(III) containing wastewater.

Abstract:Three composite adsorbents were fabricated via confined growth of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) nanoparticles within crosslinked anion exchangers (NS) of different pore size distributions to investigate the effect of host pore structure on the adsorption of As(V). With the decrease in the average pore size of the NS hosts from 38.7 to 9.2 nm, the mean diameter of the confined HFO nanoparticles was lessened from 31.4 to 11.6 nm as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while the density of active surface sites was increased due to size-dependent effect proved by potentiometric titration. The adsorption capacity of As(V) yielded by Sips model was elevated from 24.2 to 31.6 mg/g via tailoring the pore size of the NS hosts, and the adsorption kinetics was slightly accelerated with the decrease of pore size in background solution containing 500 mg/L of Cl-. Furthermore, the enhanced adsorption of As(V) was achieved over a wide pH range from 3 to 10, as well as in the presence of competing anions including Cl-, SO42-, HCO3-, NO3- (up to 800 mg/L), and PO43- (up to 10 mg P/L). In addition, the fixed-bed working capacity increased from 2200 to 2950 bed volumes (BV) owing to the size confinement effect, which did not have adverse effect on the desorption of As(V) as the cumulative desorption efficiency reached 94% with 10 BV of binary solution (5% NaOH+5% NaCl) for all the three adsorbents. Therefore, this study provided a promising strategy to regulate the reactivity of the nanoparticles via the size confinement effect of the host pore structure.

Abstract:Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as fungicides in agriculture. Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous contaminant in paddy soil. The present study was focused on the adsorption behavior of CuO NPs with regard to As as well as the characteristics of the microbial community changes in As-contaminated soil-rice systems in response to CuO NPs. The study found that CuO NPs could be a temporary sink of As in soil; a high dose of CuO NPs promoted the release of As from crystalline iron oxide, which increased the As content in the liquid phase. The study also found that the As bioavailability changed significantly when the dose of CuO NPs was higher than 50 mg kg-1 in the soil-rice system. The addition of 100 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the microbial diversity and the abundance of genes involved in As cycling, decreased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, and decreased As accumulation in grains. Treatment with 500 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, decreased Fe plaques, and increased As accumulation in rice. The adverse effects of CuO NPs on crops and associated risks need to be considered carefully.

Abstract:Hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) loaded hybrid sorbents are considered to be excellent materials for arsenic removal from water. However, role of the host pore structure in the performance of the composites is still unclear. In the current study five HFO nanocomposites of similar HFO loadings (3.9–5.3% in Fe mass) were fabricated for arsenite removal, using self-synthesized polystyrene (PS) resins of similar particle sizes but different pore structures as hosts. Structure analysis demonstrated that the particle size of HFO aggregates decreased with decreasing pore size of PS. The adsorption of arsenite onto the nanocomposites with PS of smaller average pore size achieved equilibrium faster. Analysis of kinetic data with the intraparticle diffusion model demonstrated that arsenite adsorption onto PS–HFO nanocomposites with larger HFO particles was controlled by intraparticle diffusion whereas the limitation caused by intraparticle diffusion was weakened as the particle size of HFO decreased. The adsorption capacity of the hybrid adsorbents increased with decreased pore size of PS. These results indicated that the pore structure of the support materials would play a significant role in the performance of nanoparticle-loaded porous adsorbents.

Abstract:Iron-manganese binary oxides (FeMnOx) can remove contaminants from aqueous solutions with high efficiency, and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) is widely used as a supporting material due to its large specific surface area and good stability. In this study, SBA-15 was used to support FeMnOx in the synthesis of a novel arsenic (As) adsorbent (FeMnOx/SBA-15), and its characteristics under different reaction conditions, such as pH, temperature, presence of competing ions, and humic acid, were tested. The results showed that the contaminant adsorption efficiency of the novel adsorbent was better than that of bare FeMnOx, as the addition of SBA-15 decreased the agglomeration effect of FeMnOx. Additionally, FeMnOx/SBA-15 underwent calcination to further enhance its performance. The state of iron and manganese in FeMnOx/SBA-15 and the corresponding arsenic removal efficiency were improved by calcination at 350 degrees C with an FeMnOx/SBA-15 mass fraction of approximately 45%. Almost 90% of As (50 mL, 5.0 mg L-1) could be removed by 0.2 g L-1 of FeMnOx/SBA-15 (mass ratio of 45% and calcination temperature of 350 degrees C). The FeMnOx/SBA-15 could regenerate and still be used after four consecutive cycles. The high As sorption capacity, ability to regenerate, and reusability of FeMnOx/SBA-15 confirmed that this adsorbent is promising for treating As-contaminated drinking water.

Abstract:A facile ammonia-atmosphere pre-hydrolysis post-synthetic route that can uniformly and selectively deposit Fe(2) O(3) nanoparticles in the predefined mesopores (5.6 nm) of a bimodal (2.3, 5.6 nm) mesoporous carbon matrix is demonstrated. The mesoporous magnetic Fe(2) O(3) @C encapsulates show excellent performance for arsenic capture with remarkable adsorption capacity, fast uptake rate, easy magnetic separation, and good cyclic stability.

Abstract:Arsenic pollution poses severe threat to human health, therefore dealing with the problem of arsenic contamination in water bodies is extremely important. The adsorption behaviors of different arsenic species, such as arsenate (As(V)), p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA), roxarsone (ROX), dimethylarsenate (DMA) from water using mesoporous bimetal oxide magnetic manganese ferrite nanoparticles (MnFeO) have been detailedly investigated. The adsorbent was synthesized via a facile co-precipitation approach and recovered conveniently owing to its strong magnetic properties. The obtained MnFeO with large surface area and abundant hydroxyly functional groups exhibited excellent adsorption performance for As(V) and p-ASA, in contrast to ROX and DMA with the maximum adsorption capacities of As(V), p-ASA, ROX and DMA of 68.25 mg g, 59.45 mg g, 51.49 mg g, and 35.77 mg g, respectively. The Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model correlated satisfactorily with the adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters depicted the spontaneous endothermic nature for the adsorption of different arsenic species. The adsorption mechanism of different arsenic species onto MnFeO nanoparticles at various pH values could be explained by surface complexation and molecular structural variations. Attenuated Total internal Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) further proved that arsenic species were bonded to the surface of MnFeO through the formation of an inner-sphere complex between the arsenic acid moiety and surface metal centers. The results would help to know the interaction of arsenic species with iron-manganese minerals and the mobility of arsenic species in natural environments.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous Fe3O4 particles with tunable grain size were synthesized based on a facile poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA)-modulated solvothermal method. The products were characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption technique, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The results show that increasing the PDDA dosage decrease the grain size and particle size, which increased the particle porosity and enhanced the surface area from 7.05 to 32.75 m(2) g(-1). Possible mechanism can be ascribed to the PDDA function on capping the crystal surface and promoting the viscosity of reaction medium to mediate the growth and assembly of grain. Furthermore, the arsenic adsorption application of the as-obtained Fe3O4 samples was investigated and the adsorption mechanism was proposed. High magnetic Fe3O4 particles with increased surface area display improved arsenic adsorption performance, superior efficiency in low-level arsenic removal, high desorption efficiency, and satisfactory magnetic recyclability, which are very promising compared with commercial Fe3O4 particles.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous carbon has been actively investigated for its potential applications as catalyst supports, electrochemical materials and gas separation media. In this study, we tested an iron-modified ordered mesoporous carbon (FeOMC) for its ability to adsorb arsenic from the aqueous phase. The FeOMC synthesis involved the preparation of an ordered silica template SBA-15, in situ polymerization of acrylic acid in the template, carbonization and template removal to obtain the ordered mesoporous carbon, and iron impregnation. Batch experiments showed that the pH level of the solution had a major impact on arsenic sorption. Further, we found that the presence of anions (i.e. PO43- and SiO32-) could significantly decrease the sorption of both arsenate and arsenite. Arsenite oxidation to arsenate was observed in alkaline solutions, with or without anions being present. The oxidation of arsenite was attributed to both direct and catalytic reactions with the surface functional groups on the ordered mesoporous carbon. Adsorption of arsenic on FeOMC could be well explained by the surface complexation model. Copyright (c) 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:An adsorbent with deep-treatment ability and high selectivity for arsenic removal is strongly in need in water treatment. A new composite structure combining ultrasmall (sub-2 nm) nanoparticles (NPs) with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been prepared here. In this structure, ultrasmall (sub-2 nm) hydrous ferric oxide nanoparticles (HFeO) were in-situ generated inside a Fe-based MOF (MIL-100) through a room-temperature reduction process. The structure, denoted as HFeO@MIL-100, demonstrates extraordinary adsorption ability for As (V), with a high capacity and more than 20 times faster kinetics than that of MIL-100. More importantly, it can deeply treat As (V) in contaminated water from 3900 mu gL(-1) to 5 mu g L-1, directly meeting the WHO drinking water standard (< 10 mu g L-1). And due to the size-exclusion effect of uniform micropores originated from MOFs, the structure performs high anti-interference ability in As (V) adsorption, maintaining more than 97% capacity even within abundant competitive ions or species, such as humic acid, silicate and sulfate ions.

Abstract:Immobilization of hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) particles inside solid hosts of porous structure is an important approach to improve their applicability in advanced water treatment such as arsenic and heavy metal removal. Here, we fabricated three polystyrene (PS)-based nano-HFOs and explored the effect of host pore structure on the surface chemistry of the immobilized HFOs. Potentiometric titration of the hybrids and surface complexation modeling of their adsorption towards arsenite and arsenate were performed to evaluate the surface chemistry variation of the loaded HFOs. Polymer hosts of higher surface area and narrower pore size would result in smaller particle size of HFOs and lower the value of the point of zero charge. Also, the site density (normalized by Fe mass) and the deprotonation constants of the loaded HFOs increased with the decreasing host pore size. Arsenite adsorption did not change the surface charge of the loaded HFOs, whereas arsenate adsorption accompanied more of the negative surface charges. Adsorption affinity of both arsenic species with three HFO hybrids were compared in terms of the intrinsic surface complexation constants optimized based on the adsorption edges. HFO loaded in polystyrene host of smaller pore size exhibits stronger affinity with arsenic species.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are massively discharged into the aquatic environment leading to adverse health effects. Considering their adsorption of small molecules and polymers, it is important to study the effect of aqueous system composition on NPs’ behavior and toxicity. Nanomaterials with enzyme-like activities have caught a lot of recent research interest. Since nanozyme reactions take place on the surface of nanomaterials, their catalytic activities often show significant influence by adsorption of small molecules and polymers. CeO2 and Fe3O4 nanoparticles are two classic nanozymes, showing oxidase and peroxidase like activities, respectively. Inorganic arsenic species are critical for environmental and catalytic research. In this study, we used 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as a model substrate to examine the effect of inorganic arsenic species (As(III) and As(V)) on the activity of CeO2 and Fe3O4. The oxidation capacity of nanoceria was decreased to one third with the addition of 1 mM As(III), but was improved by 3-fold in the presence of 0.1 mM As(V). The former is mainly due to the reducing power of As(III), while the latter is attributable to the adsorption of As(V) on the nanoceria surface decreasing the electrostatic repulsion between nanoceria and TMB. For Fe3O4, its activity was first promoted and later inhibited by both As(III) and As(V). Therefore, nanomaterials not only affect arsenic species through redox chemistry and adsorption, but in turn arsenic can affect the catalytic activity of nanomaterials.

Adsorption Behavior of Organoarsenicals over MnFe2O4-Graphene Hybrid Nanocomposite: The Role of Organoarsenic Chemical Structures

Abstract:As a kind of emerging contaminant, organoarsenic compounds have drawn wide concern because of their considerable solubilities in water, and the highly toxic inorganic arsenic species formed during their biotic and abiotic degradation in the natural environment. Thus, the effective removal and studying of the adsorption mechanism of organoarsenic compounds are of significant urgency. In this work, MnFe2O4 and MnFe2O4/graphene were prepared through a facile solvothermal method. From the results of the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) characterization, it can be found that MnFe2O4 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on the surface of the graphene. And the specific surface area of the MnFe2O4/graphene was about 146.39 m2 g-1, much higher than that of the MnFe2O4 (86.15 m2 g-1). The interactions between organoarsenic compounds and adsorbents were conducted to study their adsorption behavior and mechanism. The maximum adsorption capacities of MnFe2O4/graphene towards p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) and roxarsone (ROX) were calculated to be 22.75 and 30.59 mg g-1. Additionally, the ionic strength, negative ions, and humus were introduced to investigate the adsorption performance of organoarsenic compounds. Electrostatic adsorption and surface complexation are the primary adsorption mechanisms on account of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis. This research extends the knowledge into studying the interaction between organoarsenic species and hybrid nanomaterials in the natural environment.
Nanoporous Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 Nanoparticles for Arsenic Removal

Abstract:Herein, we report a solvent-free self-templating strategy for rapid synthesis of nanoscale hierarchically porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (HP-ZIF-8) with micro-, meso-, and macropores. ZIF-8 crystals were produced in situ on ZnO nanoparticles via vapor deposition of 2-methylimidazole, and hierarchical nanopores were obtained after selectively etching ZnO. ZnO nanoparticles acted as both a Zn source and a meso-/macropore template for HP-ZIF-8. Systematic arsenic adsorption experiments showed that the presence of meso-/macropores can effectively enhance and accelerate arsenic removal via chemisorption. As a result, HP-ZIF-8 exhibited an As(III) adsorption capacity of 104.9 mg/g, nearly double that of traditional ZIF-8 nanoparticles, despite having remarkably more micropores. This study provides a highly adsorbable strategy to fabricate hierarchical porous metal–organic frameworks for pollutant removal.

Abstract:While the availability of arsenic (As) in soil is well known to be highly correlated with the presence of iron (Fe) oxides and humic acid (HA) in the soil, the relationship between Fe oxides and HA and As species in the soil is less well understood. In this study, As speciation in an unsaturated soil in the presence of external HA and green synthesized Fe oxide nanoparticles (FeNPs) showed that As(V) was mainly distributed to the specifically-bound (F2), amorphous and poorly-crystalline hydrous oxides of Fe, Al (F3) and the well-crystallized hydrous oxides of Fe and Al (F4). While As(III). This was the major component in unsaturated soil, and was mainly distributed to F4 and the residual fraction (F5). As bound to F3 and F5 was most sensitive to the addition of HA and FeNPs, while HA/FeNPs treatment increased the F3-bound As(V); however, it decreased the F5-bound As(III). Nonetheless the effect of HA on As is completely different to the HA/FeNPs treatment. The increase of As(V) in F3 resulted from F5-bound As(III) oxidation when treated by HA/FeNPs. Cyclic voltammetry confirmed that HA and Fe3+/Fe2+ redox enhanced As(III) oxidation, while FTIR revealed that HA-bound As(III) was the least available fraction in the soil. Finally, a mechanism involving a combination of HA and FeNPs was proposed for explaining the redistribution of As species in the soil.

Abstract:Arsenic oxidation plays a crucial role in its removal, which has been identified in numerous studies. However, the mechanisms, especially reaction pathways of arsenic oxidation on sorbent surfaces remain inadequately explored. In this work, the effects of Mn doping on arsenic adsorption and oxidation were first verified by adsorption experiments. Subsequently, DFT calculations were carried out to identify alterations in the adsorption energies, active sites, and oxidation pathways. By integrating the experimental and simulation results, a dual-functional framework encompassing adsorption and catalysis of Mn-modified Fe-based material was distinctly established. For adsorption, the introduction of manganese into iron-based sorbent considerably enhanced As 2 O 3 adsorption owing to the increased active sites available for As 2 O 3 chemisorption and the promotion of surface nucleophilicity. Concerning oxidative catalysis, the incorporation of MnO 2 augmented surface catalytic oxidation and provided a substantial amount of active O load . Consequently, the arsenic oxidation occurring on the Mn-modified sorbent surfaces possessed a lower oxidation RDS energy barrier and a shorter oxidation pathway than those on the bare sorbent surfaces. These experimental and simulation results provide a theoretical basis for the design and application of efficient gaseous arsenic adsorbents.

Abstract:<p>Arsenic (As) adsorbed on Fe oxyhydroxides (adsorbent) is widely occurring in many environmental settings such as in acid mine drainage systems or in the hydrometallurgical operations to form Fe-As coprecipitates. However, the influence of the reaction media and the drying treatment on the microstructure of the directly formed adsorbents at various pHs was still not fully understood. In this work, As adsorption behaviors on various forms of Fe oxyhydroxides were systematically investigated by using XRD, FTIR, Raman, XANES, and HRTEM. The results revealed that at weak acidic pH, more As could adsorbed on the suspension adsorbent formed in sulfate and chloride media than that in nitrate media, possibly due to the microstructure alteration of the adsorbent in the presence of sulfate and chloride. Besides, the increasing crystallinity of the Fe oxyhydroxides and the aggregation effect after drying were the major reasons why less As could be hold by the dried adsorbents than that of the corresponding suspension adsorbents. These findings could shed more light on the nature of the Fe oxyhydroxides which may be helpful for more precisely predicting the fate of some toxic metal(loid)s in the environment.</p>

Abstract:Amorphous nanometer alumina (nano-Al 2 O 3 ) was prepared by inverse microemulsion method in the presence of aluminum sulfate octadecahydrate as the aluminum source, poly(ethylene glycol) octyl-phenyl ether and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide as the emulsifiers, and n-butanol as the co-surfactant. The optimal condition for preparing nano-Al 2 O 3 was investigated in relation to the effect of stirring rate on the morphology and adsorption performance of the product; and the adsorption capacity and mechanism of nano-Al 2 O 3 for AsO 4 3- ion in aqueous solution were explored based on simulations with conventional isothermal adsorption models. Findings indicate that nano-Al 2 O 3 prepared in the absence of emulsifiers and co-surfactant exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 149.76 mg·g −1 towards AsO 4 3- ion, higher than the adsorption capacity reported in the literature. The adsorption capacity of nano-Al 2 O 3 for AsO 4 3- is dependent on the pH value and temperature of the solution as well as coexisting ions; and the maximum adsorption capacity occurs at a solution pH of 6. Moreover, the adsorption of AsO 4 3- ion by nano-Al 2 O 3 in aqueous solution obeys Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation, referring to monolayer adsorption and chemical adsorption. The adsorption process is governed by both membrane diffusion and internal diffusion; and the adsorption rate is dominated by membrane diffusion. In summary, nano-Al 2 O 3 has strong adsorption capacity and stability for AsO 4 3- ion in aqueous solution and could be a promising nano-adsorbent for removing heavy metal like AsO 4 3- ion therefrom.
