Abstract:High repetition frequencies of 105, 640, 1280, and 2000 kHz were applied in femtosecond laser ablation of the surface of an AZ31 magnesium alloy, and micro-nano structures of groove, granular, cauliflower-like, porous, and cone were fabricated. The granular, cauliflower-like, and porous structures formed at the same maximum average power and the same energy input, but at different combinations of repetition frequencies and pulse energies. The granular and cauliflower-like structures created by single-layer scan were distinguished by heat accumulation and pulse energy. The complex porous structure was efficiently fabricated by double-layer scan that split the total energy input into the two scan layers. The rough surface with micro cracks created by the first-layer scan induced the formation of the porous structure in the second-layer scan, which provides a feasible way to fabricate complex structures on Mg surface. The surface hardness was significantly increased by the ablation, which was discussed in terms of laser impact strengthening, oxidation, and grain structure. The ablation rates at 1280 and 2000 kHz were much higher than those at 105 kHz, and the maximum of ∼1.48 mm3/min was obtained at 2000 kHz.
