Abstract:We study the effects of subgroup distortion in the wreath products A wr Z, where A is finitely generated abelian. We show that every finitely generated subgroup of A wr Z has distortion function equivalent to some polynomial. Moreover, for A infinite, and for any polynomial l^k, there is a 2-generated subgroup of A wr Z having distortion function equivalent to the given polynomial. Also a formula for the length of elements in arbitrary wreath product H wr G easily shows that the group Z_2 wr Z^2 has distorted subgroups, while the lamplighter group Z_2 wr Z has no distorted (finitely generated) subgroups.

Abstract:We prove that abelian subgroups of the outer automorphism group of a free group are quasi-isometrically embedded. Our proof uses recent developments in the theory of train track maps by Feighn-Handel. As an application, we prove the rank conjecture for $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$.

Abstract:We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gon\c{c}alves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

Abstract:The authors study the finite decomposition complexity of metric spaces of H , equipped with different metrics, where H is a subgroup of the linear group GL ∞ (ℤ). It is proved that there is an injective Lipschitz map φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d ), where F is the Thompson’s group, dS the word-metric of F with respect to the finite generating set S and d a metric of H . But it is not a proper map. Meanwhile, it is proved that φ : ( F, d S ) → ( H, d 1 ) is not a Lipschitz map, where d 1 is another metric of H .

Abstract:Let G be a subgroup of S 6 , the symmetric group of degree 6. For any field k , G acts naturally on the rational function field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) via k -automorphisms defined by σ ⋅ x i = x σ ( i ) for any σ ∈ G and any 1 ≤ i ≤ 6 . We prove the following theorem. The fixed field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k , except possibly when G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) , PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , or A 6 . When G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) or PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , then C ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is C -rational and k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is stably k -rational for any field k . The invariant theory of wreath products will be investigated also.
A Decomposition Theorem for Herman Maps

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.
On the Springer correspondence for wreath products

Abstract:We first show that the wreath product $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$ between two symmetric groups appears as the generalized Weyl group of an Iwahori's generalized Tits system. We then introduce a certain subvariety of the flag variety of type A, and then give a geometric proof of its Bruhat decomposition indexed by $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$, via the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition. Furthermore, we realize the group algebra $\mathbb{Q}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$ as the top Borel-Moore homology of a Steinberg variety. Such a geometric realization leads to a Springer correspondence for the irreducible representations over $\mathbb{C}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$, which can be regarded as a counterpart of the Clifford theory for wreath products. Consequently, we have obtained a new Springer correspondence of type B/C/D using essentially type A geometry.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of groups called wreath-like products. These groups are close relatives of the classical wreath products and arise naturally in the context of group theoretic Dehn filling. Unlike ordinary wreath products, many wreath-like products have Kazhdan's property (T). In this paper, we prove that any group $G$ in a natural family of wreath-like products with property (T) is W$^*$-superrigid: the group von Neumann algebra $\text{L}(G)$ remembers the isomorphism class of $G$. This allows us to provide the first examples (in fact, $2^{\aleph_0}$ pairwise non-isomorphic examples) of W$^*$-superrigid groups with property (T).

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $\delta_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[\delta_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[\delta_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $\delta_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

Revisiting Foulkes characters of wreath products

Abstract:The article is concerned with the Foulkes characters of wreath products, which are block characters of wreath products, i.e., the positive-definite class functions depending only on the length of its elements. Inspired by the works of Gnedin--Gorin--Kerov and Miller, we introduce two specializations of the Schur--Weyl--Sergeev duality for wreath products and obtain two families of block characters, which provide a decomposition and an alternative construction of the Foulkes characters of wreath products. In particular, we give alternative proofs on some remarkable properties of the Foulkes characters. Along the way, we show that the Foulkes characters are the extreme rays of the cone of the block characters of wreath products and construct the representations with traces being the Foulkes characters via the coinvariant algebra of wreath products.

Abstract:For a class of wreath-like product groups with property (T), we describe explicitly all the embeddings between their von Neumann algebras. This allows us to provide a continuum of ICC groups with property (T) whose von Neumann algebras are pairwise non (stably) embeddable. We also give a construction of groups in this class only having inner injective homomorphisms. As an application, we obtain examples of group von Neumann algebras which admit only inner endomorphisms.

Abstract:We initiate the study of deformations of groups in three-dimensional complex hyperbolic geometry. Let $$G=\left\langle \iota_1, \iota_2, \iota_3, \iota_4 \Bigg| \begin{array}{c} \iota_1^2= \iota_2^2 = \iota_3^2=\iota_4^2=id,\\ (\iota_1 \iota_3)^{2}=(\iota_1 \iota_4)^{3}=(\iota_2 \iota_4)^{2}=id \end{array}\right\rangle$$ be an abstract group. We study representations $\rho: G \rightarrow \mathbf{PU}(3,1)$, where $\rho( \iota_{i})=I_{i}$ is a complex reflection fixing a complex hyperbolic plane in ${\bf H}^{3}_{\mathbb C}$ for $1 \leq i \leq 4$, with the additional condition that $I_1I_2$ is parabolic. When we assume two pairs of hyper-parallel complex hyperbolic planes have the same distance, then the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ is parameterized by $(h,t) \in [1, \infty) \times [0, \pi]$ but $t \leq \operatorname{arccos}(-\frac{3h^2+1}{4h^2})$. In particular, $t=0$ and $t=\operatorname{arccos}(-\frac{3h^2+1}{4h^2})$ degenerate to ${\bf H}^{3}_{\mathbb R}$-geometry and ${\bf H}^{2}_{\mathbb C}$-geometry respectively. Using the Ford domain of $\rho_{(\sqrt{2},\operatorname{arccos}(-\frac{7}{8}))}(G)$ as a guide, we show $\rho_{(h,t)}$ is a discrete and faithful representation of $G \rightarrow \mathbf{PU}(3,1)$ when $(h,t) \in \mathcal{M}$ is near to $(\sqrt{2}, \operatorname{arccos}(-\frac{7}{8}))$. This is the first nontrivial example of the Ford domain of a subgroup in $\mathbf{PU}(3,1)$ that has been studied.

Abstract:We produce examples of codimension one foliations of the Euclidean and hyperbolic planes with bounded geometry which are topologically products, but for which leaves are non-recursively distorted. That is, the function which compares intrinsic distances in leaves with extrinsic distances in the ambient space grows faster than any recursive function.

Abstract:We characterize permutational wreath products with Property (FA). For instance, the standard wreath product A wr B of two nontrivial countable groups A,B, has Property (FA) if and only if B has Property (FA) and A is a finitely generated group with finite abelianisation. We also prove an analogous result for hereditary Property (FA). On the other hand, we prove that many wreath products with hereditary Property (FA) are not quotients of finitely presented groups with the same property.

Abstract:We examine distortion of finitely generated normal subgroups. We show a connection between subgroup distortion and group divergence. We suggest a method computing the distortion of normal subgroups by decomposing the whole group into smaller subgroups. We apply our work to compute the distortion of normal subgroups of graph of groups and normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups that induce infinite cyclic quotient groups. We construct normal subgroups of $\CAT(0)$ groups introduced by Macura and introduce a collection of normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. These groups provide a rich source to study the connection between subgroup distortion and group divergence on $\CAT(0)$ groups.

Abstract:Inspired by the definition of generalized wreath product of permutation groups, we define the generalized wreath product of graphs, containing the classical Cartesian and wreath product of graphs as particular cases.
