Abstract:Inspired by the definition of generalized wreath product of permutation groups, we define the generalized wreath product of graphs, containing the classical Cartesian and wreath product of graphs as particular cases. We prove that the generalized wreath product of Cayley graphs of finite groups is the Cayley graph of the generalized wreath product of the corresponding groups.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $\delta_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $\delta_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[\delta_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[\delta_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $\delta_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

Transitivity in wreath products with symmetric groups

Abstract:It is known that the notion of a transitive subgroup of a permutation group $P$ extends naturally to the subsets of $P$. We study transitive subsets of the wreath product $G \wr S_n$, where $G$ is a finite abelian group. This includes the hyperoctahedral group for $G=C_2$. We give structural characterisations of transitive subsets using the character theory of $G \wr S_n$ and interpret such subsets as designs in the conjugacy class association scheme of $G \wr S_n$. In particular, we prove a generalisation of the Livingstone-Wagner theorem and give explicit constructions of transitive sets. Moreover, we establish connections to orthogonal polynomials, namely the Charlier polynomials, and use them to study codes and designs in $C_r \wr S_n$. Many of our results extend results about the symmetric group $S_n$.

Abstract:For a class of wreath-like product groups with property (T), we describe explicitly all the embeddings between their von Neumann algebras. This allows us to provide a continuum of ICC groups with property (T) whose von Neumann algebras are pairwise non (stably) embeddable. We also give a construction of groups in this class only having inner injective homomorphisms. As an application, we obtain examples of group von Neumann algebras which admit only inner endomorphisms.

Abstract:We present a new proof, which is independent of the finite simple group classification and applies also to infinite groups, that quasiprimitive permutation groups of simple diagonal type cannot be embedded into wreath products in product action. The proof uses several deep results that concern factorisations of direct products involving subdirect subgroups. We find that such factorisations are controlled by the existence of uniform automorphisms.

Abstract:We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gon\c{c}alves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.

Abstract:We survey solvability of equations in wreath products of groups, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is solvable in wreath products of Abelian groups. We consider the related question of determining commutator width, and prove that the quadratic diophantine problem is also solvable in Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian group. This text is a short version of an extensive article by the first-named authors.

Abstract:A wreath product is a method to construct an association scheme from two association schemes. We determine the automorphism group of a wreath product. We show a known result that a wreath product is Schurian if and only if both components are Schurian, which yields large families of non-Schurian association schemes and non-Schurian $S$-rings. We also study iterated wreath products. Kernel schemes by Martin and Stinson are shown to be iterated wreath products of class-one association schemes. The iterated wreath products give examples of projective systems of non-Schurian association schemes, with an explicit description of primitive idempotents.

Abstract:We define wreath products of cocommutative Hopf algebras, and show that they enjoy a universal property of classifying cleft extensions, analogous to the Kaloujnine-Krasner theorem for groups. We show that the group ring of a wreath product of groups is the wreath product of their group rings, and that (with a natural definition of wreath products of Lie algebras) the universal enveloping algebra of a wreath product of Lie algebras is the wreath product of their enveloping algebras. We recover the aforementioned result that group extensions may be classified as certain subgroups of a wreath product, and that Lie algebra extensions may also be classified as certain subalgebras of a wreath product.

Abstract:If $\textbf{S}$ is a subcategory of metric spaces, we say that a group G has property $B\textbf{S}$ if any isometric action on an $\textbf{S}$-space has bounded orbits. Examples of such subcategories include metric spaces, affine real Hilbert spaces, CAT(0) cube complexes, connected median graphs, trees or ultra-metric spaces. The corresponding properties $B\textbf{S}$ are respectively Bergman's property, property FH (which, for countable groups, is equivalent to the celebrated Kazhdan's property (T)), property FW (both for CAT(0) cube complexes and for connected median graphs), property FA and uncountable cofinality. Historically many of these properties were defined using the existence of fixed points. Our main result is that for many subcategories $\textbf{S}$, the wreath product $G\wr_XH$ has property $B\textbf{S}$ if and only if both $G$ and $H$ have property $B\textbf{S}$ and $X$ is finite. On one hand, this encompasses in a general setting previously known results for properties FH and FW. On the other hand, this also applies to the Bergman's property. Finally, we also obtain that $G\wr_XH$ has uncountable cofinality if and only if both $G$ and $H$ have uncountable cofinality and $H$ acts on $X$ with finitely many orbits.

Abstract:In this paper, a kind of restricted wreath product of an arbitrary band of groups by an arbitrary generalized inverse semigroup is introduced first. This wreath product turns out to be an E -solid semigroup, and if one comes out at the beginning with a normal band of groups, then it shows itself to be also a locally inverse semigroup. Then it is proved that every E -solid locally inverse semigroup S can be embedded in such a restricted wreath product of a normal band of groups Q by a generalized inverse semigroup K . Here K can be taken to be the greatest orthodox semigroup homomorphic image of S and Q can be taken to be the preimage of the band of idempotents of K under the canonical homomorphism of S onto its quotient K . In this way, the given E -solid locally inverse semigroup S decomposes into a restricted wreath product of its components Q and K whose structure derives directly from that of S .

Abstract:Let G be a subgroup of S 6 , the symmetric group of degree 6. For any field k , G acts naturally on the rational function field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) via k -automorphisms defined by σ ⋅ x i = x σ ( i ) for any σ ∈ G and any 1 ≤ i ≤ 6 . We prove the following theorem. The fixed field k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is rational (i.e., purely transcendental) over k , except possibly when G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) , PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , or A 6 . When G is isomorphic to PSL 2 ( F 5 ) or PGL 2 ( F 5 ) , then C ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is C -rational and k ( x 1 , … , x 6 ) G is stably k -rational for any field k . The invariant theory of wreath products will be investigated also.

Abstract:finitely generated group is said to be an automata group if it admits a faithful self-similar finite-state representation on some regular $m$-tree. We prove that if $G$ is a subgroup of an automata group, then for each finitely generated abelian group $A$, the wreath product $A \wr G$ is a subgroup of an automata group. We obtain, for example, that $C_2 \wr (C_{2} \wr \mathbb{Z})$, $\mathbb{Z} \wr (C_2 \wr \mathbb{Z})$, $C_2 \wr (\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z})$, and $\mathbb{Z} \wr (\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z})$ are subgroups of automata groups. In the particular case $\mathbb{Z} \wr (\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z})$, we prove that it is a subgroup of a two-letters automata group; this solves Problem 15.19 - (b) of the Kourovka Notebook proposed by A. M. Brunner and S. Sidki in 2000 [8, 17].

Wreath-like products of groups and their von Neumann algebras I: $W^\ast$-superrigidity

Abstract:We introduce a new class of groups called wreath-like products. These groups are close relatives of the classical wreath products and arise naturally in the context of group theoretic Dehn filling. Unlike ordinary wreath products, many wreath-like products have Kazhdan's property (T). In this paper, we prove that any group $G$ in a natural family of wreath-like products with property (T) is W$^*$-superrigid: the group von Neumann algebra $\text{L}(G)$ remembers the isomorphism class of $G$. This allows us to provide the first examples (in fact, $2^{\aleph_0}$ pairwise non-isomorphic examples) of W$^*$-superrigid groups with property (T).

Abstract:Garsia and Gessel constructed innovative bijections to obtain multivariate generating functions of permutation statistics. In 2011, Biaogioli and Zeng successfully derived four and six variate distributions on the set of wreath product. In this paper, we will generalize the four variate identities from BZ to any positive dominant ordering. And we will simplify the six variate distribution function under the ordering originally defined by Adin and Roichman in 2001.

On the Springer correspondence for wreath products

Abstract:We first show that the wreath product $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$ between two symmetric groups appears as the generalized Weyl group of an Iwahori's generalized Tits system. We then introduce a certain subvariety of the flag variety of type A, and then give a geometric proof of its Bruhat decomposition indexed by $\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d$, via the Bialynicki-Birula decomposition. Furthermore, we realize the group algebra $\mathbb{Q}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$ as the top Borel-Moore homology of a Steinberg variety. Such a geometric realization leads to a Springer correspondence for the irreducible representations over $\mathbb{C}[\Sigma_m\wr \Sigma_d]$, which can be regarded as a counterpart of the Clifford theory for wreath products. Consequently, we have obtained a new Springer correspondence of type B/C/D using essentially type A geometry.

Quantifying conjugacy separability in wreath products of groups

Abstract:We study generalisations of conjugacy separability in restricted wreath products of groups. We provide an effective upper bound for $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of a wreath product $A \wr B$ in terms of the $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of $A$ and $B$, the growth of $\mathcal{C}$-cyclic subgroup separability of $B$, and the $\mathcal{C}$-residual girth of $B.$ As an application, we provide a characterisation of when $A \wr B$ is $p$-conjugacy separable. We use this characterisation to the provide for each prime $p$ an example of wreath products with infinite base group that are $p$-conjugacy separable. We also provide asymptotic upper bounds for conjugacy separability for wreath products of nilpotent groups which include the lamplighter groups and provide asymptotic upper bounds for conjugacy separability of the free metabelian groups. Along the way, we provide a polynomial upper bound for the shortest conjugator between two elements of length at most $n$ in a finitely generated nilpotent group.
