Abstract:We prove that abelian subgroups of the outer automorphism group of a free group are quasi-isometrically embedded. Our proof uses recent developments in the theory of train track maps by Feighn-Handel. As an application, we prove the rank conjecture for $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$.

Abstract:We examine distortion of finitely generated normal subgroups. We show a connection between subgroup distortion and group divergence. We suggest a method computing the distortion of normal subgroups by decomposing the whole group into smaller subgroups. We apply our work to compute the distortion of normal subgroups of graph of groups and normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups that induce infinite cyclic quotient groups. We construct normal subgroups of $\CAT(0)$ groups introduced by Macura and introduce a collection of normal subgroups of right-angled Artin groups. These groups provide a rich source to study the connection between subgroup distortion and group divergence on $\CAT(0)$ groups.

Residually finite groups with uniformly almost flat quotients

Abstract:We show that if all the finite coset spaces of a polycyclic group have diameter bounded uniformly below by a polynomial in their size then the group is virtually nilpotent. We obtain the same conclusion for a finitely generated residually torsion-free nilpotent group under the weaker assumption that the finite quotient groups have diameter bounded uniformly below by a polynomial in their size. This extends work of Khukhro and Valette.

Abstract:We study the effects of subgroup distortion in the wreath products A wr Z, where A is finitely generated abelian. We show that every finitely generated subgroup of A wr Z has distortion function equivalent to some polynomial. Moreover, for A infinite, and for any polynomial l^k, there is a 2-generated subgroup of A wr Z having distortion function equivalent to the given polynomial. Also a formula for the length of elements in arbitrary wreath product H wr G easily shows that the group Z_2 wr Z^2 has distorted subgroups, while the lamplighter group Z_2 wr Z has no distorted (finitely generated) subgroups.

Flawed groups and the topology of character varieties

Abstract:A finitely presented group F is called flawed if Hom(F,G)//G deformation retracts onto its subspace Hom(F,K)/K for reductive affine algebraic groups G and maximal compact subgroups K in G. After discussing generalities concerning flawed groups, we show that all finitely generated groups isomorphic to a free product of nilpotent groups are flawed. This unifies and generalizes all previously known classes of flawed groups. We also provide further evidence for the authors' conjecture that RAAGs (with torsion) are flawed. Lastly, we show direct products between finite groups and some flawed group are also flawed. These latter two theorems enlarge the known class of flawed groups.

Revisiting Farrell's nonfiniteness of Nil

Abstract:We study Farrell Nil-groups associated to a finite order automorphism of a ring $R$. We show that any such Farrell Nil-group is either trivial, or infinitely generated (as an abelian group). Building on this first result, we then show that any finite group that occurs in such a Farrell Nil-group occurs with infinite multiplicity. If the original finite group is a direct summand, then the countably infinite sum of the finite subgroup also appears as a direct summand. We use this to deduce a structure theorem for countable Farrell Nil-groups with finite exponent. Finally, as an application, we show that if $V$ is any virtually cyclic group, then the associated Farrell or Waldhausen Nil-groups can always be expressed as a countably infinite sum of copies of a finite group, provided they have finite exponent (which is always the case in dimension $0$).

Abstract:In the paper we study irreducible representations of some nilpotent groups of finite abelian total rank. The main result of the paper states that if a torsion-free minimax group $G$ of nilpotency class 2 admits a faithful irreducible representation $\varphi $ over a finitely generated field $k$ such that $chark \notin Sp(G)$ then there exist a subgroup $N$ and an irreducible primitive representation $\psi $ of the subgroup $N$ over $k$ such that the representation $\varphi $ is induced from $\psi $ and the quotient group $N/Ker\psi $ is finitely generated.

Abstract:In this paper, we study distortion in the group $\mathcal A$ of Affine Interval Exchange Transformations (AIET). We prove that any distorted element $f$ of $\mathcal A$, has an iterate $f^ k$ that is conjugate by an element of $\mathcal A$ to a product of infinite order restricted rotations, with pairwise disjoint supports. As consequences we prove that no Baumslag-Solitar group, $BS(m,n)$ with $\vert m \vert \neq \vert n \vert$, acts faithfully by elements of $\mathcal A$, every finitely generated nilpotent group of $\mathcal A$ is virtually abelian and there is no distortion element in $\mathcal A_{\mathbb Q}$, the subgroup of $\mathcal A$ consisting of rational AIETs.

Abstract:We consider groups $G$ such that the set $[G,\varphi]=\{g^{-1}g^{\varphi}|g\in G\}$ is a subgroup for every automorphism $\varphi$ of $G$, and we prove that there exists such a group $G$ that is finite and nilpotent of class $n$ for every $n\in\mathbb N$. Then there exists an infinite nonnilpotent group with the above property and the conjecture 18.14 of $[5]$ is false.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{T}$ denote the class of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups. For a group $G$ let $F(G)$ be the set of isomorphism classes of finite quotients of $G$. Pickel proved that if $G \in \mathcal{T}$, then the set $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ of isomorphism classes of groups $H \in \mathcal{T}$ with $F(G)=F(H)$ is finite. We give an explicit description of the sets $\mathfrak{g}(G)$ for the $\mathcal{T}$-groups $G$ of Hirsch length at most $5$. Based on this, we show that for each Hirsch length $n\geq 4$ and for each $m \in \mathbb{N}$ there is a $\mathcal{T}$-group $G$ of Hirsch length $n$ with $\vert\mathfrak{g}(G)\vert\geq m$.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a nilpotent group acted on by a group $H$ via automorphisms and let the group $G$ admit the semidirect product $FH$ as a group of automorphisms so that $C_G(F) = 1$. We prove that the order of $\gamma_\infty(G)$, the rank of $\gamma_\infty(G)$ are bounded in terms of the orders of $\gamma_{\infty}(C_G(H))$ and $H$, the rank of $\gamma_{\infty}(C_G(H))$ and the order of $H$, respectively in cases where either $FH$ is a Frobenius group; $FH$ is a Frobenius-like group satisfying some certain conditions; or $FH=\langle \alpha,\beta\rangle$ is a dihedral group generated by the involutions $\alpha$ and $\beta$ with $F =\langle \alpha\beta\rangle$ and $H =\langle\alpha \rangle$.

Abstract:For each natural number $n$, we consider the subgroup $\mathcal{R}_n$ of Homeo$_+[0,1]$ made by the elements that are linear except for a subset whose Cantor-Bendixson rank is less than or equal to $n$. These groups of generalized piecewise-linear transformations yield an ascending chain of groups as we increase $n$. We study how the notion of distorted element changes along this chain. Our main result establishes that for each natural number $n$, there exits an element that is undistorted of $\mathcal{R}_n$ yet distorted in $\mathcal{R}_{n+1}$. Actually, such an element is explicitly constructed.

Centralisers of linear growth automorphisms of free groups

Abstract:In this note we investigate the centraliser of a linearly growing element of $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$ (that is, a root of a Dehn twist automorphism), and show that it has a finite index subgroup mapping onto a direct product of certain "equivariant McCool groups" with kernel a finitely generated free abelian group. In particular, this allows us to show it is VF and hence finitely presented.

Abstract:Abstract We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotence of the free loop proved by Higman, it is established, essentially, by the same method.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a transitive permutation group of sufficiently large degree $n$, then either $G$ is primitive and Frobenius, or the proportion of derangements in $G$ is larger than $1/(2n^{1/2})$. This is sharp, generalizes substantially bounds of Cameron--Cohen and Guralnick--Wan, and settles conjectures of Guralnick--Tiep and Bailey--Cameron--Giudici--Royle in large degree. We also give an application to coverings of varieties over finite fields.

Abstract:Let Gamma be a group generated by two positive multi-twists. We give some sufficient conditions for Gamma to be free or have no `unexpectedly reducible' elements. For a group Gamma generated by two Dehn twists, we classify the elements in Gamma which are multi-twists. As a consequence we are able to list all the lantern-like relations in the mapping class groups. We classify groups generated by powers of two Dehn twists which are free, or have no "unexpectedly reducible" elements. In the end we pose similar problems for groups generated by powers of n > 2 twists and give a partial result.

Abstract:We show that finitely generated groups which are Liouville and without infinite finite-dimensional linear representations must have a global fixed point whenever they act by isometry on a finite-dimensional complete CAT(0)-space. This provides a partial answer to an old question in geometric group theory and proves partly a conjecture formulated by Norin, Osajda, and Przytycki. It applies in particular to Grigorchuk's groups of intermediate growth and other branch groups as well as to simple groups with the Liouville property such as those found by Matte Bon and by Nekrashevych. The method of proof uses ultralimits, equivariant harmonic maps, subharmonic functions, horofunctions and random walks.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a dp-minimal group; we prove some consequences of several different hypotheses on $G$. First, if $G$ is torsion-free, then it is abelian. Second, if $G$ admits a distal f-generic type, then it is virtually nilpotent; we prove this by equipping the quotient of $G$ by its FC-center in this case with a valued group structure. Finally, if $G$ has the uniform chain condition, for example if $G$ is stable, then $G$ is virtually solvable.
