Abstract:The micro-mechanical behavior of lamellar structured Ti6Al4V alloy was studied upon a small strain of 4.5 % compressional loading. The strain and stress concentration is found highly related to individual crystallographic orientation, their size, shape and grain-grain interaction, which usually concentrated along grain boundaries (GBs) typically soft and hard GBs owing to the strong strain gradient incurred. The generated local plastic deformation forms ledges through dislocation accumulation which further activate large amount of Geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) to accomodate strain incompatibility. Both strain and stress is maximized at some triple points (TPs). EBSD and crystal plasticity (CP) simulation disclosed some long range meso-bands (about 45° to loading direction) across multi-grains and mini-bands within grain interiors (GIs) with concentrated strain behavior which demonstrate slip and ductile behavior of the Ti6Al4V material. Prismatic slip is found dominated the slip behavior of the Ti6AL4V alloy (mostly from surface dislocation activation) which is away from some findings of literature and largely determined by its low critical resolved shear stress (CRSS). Dislocation is observed emitted from high angle grain boundaries (HAGBs) while slip transmission is observed through both low (LAGBs) and HAGBs. The substructures (α-lamellae), a type of LAGBs allocated within α-colonies, have no significant effect to dislocation movement. Fatigue failure can be inferred from the early stage of micro-mechanical behavior mainly judged by the amount of accumulated plastic deformation and induced stress/strain distribution amont the surroundings. Crack may nucleate from easy prismatic slip, local strain accumulation induced by soft and hard grain clustering (either hard embedded in soft or vice versa usually start from some TPs and sharp corners), or some concentrated long range slip activities. Other than the surface dents induced failure, shearing, cleavage, multi-cleavage and intergranular patterns is presumed highly related to the local microstructure, including their relative size, shape, orientation and grain-grain interactions. The multiple crack origins deemed for reduce fatigue life of shot peened samples regardless of the surface compressional residual stress being generated. The work helps understand the micro-mechanical deformation behavior (down to dislocation level) of Ti6Al4V alloy. Their fatigue and fracture can be inferred from such early stage of strain/stress behavior considering microstructural heterogeneities for similar alloys.
