Abstract:The organic hybrids of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/hindered phenol (AO-80) were prepared through melt blending, which was followed by hot and cold pressing procedure. The microstructure and dynamic mechanical properties of the hybrids were systematically investigated through SEM, DSC, XRD, FTIR, DMA and a tensile tester. The experimental results indicated that AO-80 was completely dissolved in the matrix. The glass transition of the soft segments of TPU was found to shift to higher temperature with the amount of AO-80 increasing, whereas the glass transition of the hard segments exhibited nearly no evident change, indicating that AO-80 was selectively located in the soft region of TPU and the formation of the strong intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonding) between AO-80 and the soft region of TPU. With the increase of AO-80 in the hybrids, the tan delta peak gradually shifted to higher temperatures and the maximal tan delta value increased from 0.4 to 1.6. Meanwhile, the glass transition temperature ranges broadened and the TA value increased greatly with the more content of AO-80. Because of the decrease of the hard segments amount in the hybrids, the tensile stress of these hybrids decreased, but still maintained at a high level. The hybrids were expected to have potential applications as high performance damping materials combined with good mechanical properties. (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Abstract Nylon-6 and acrylate rubber (ACM) were melt blended in a Brabender Plasticorder at 220 °C and 40 rpm rotor speed. The reactive nature of the blend is reflected in the mixing torque behavior of the blends at different compositions. The solubility characteristics of the blends in formic acid solution gives an approximate idea of the amount of nylon-6 grafted onto ACM and vice-versa. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the well known epoxy—amine and epoxy—acid reactions and is confirmed by infrared spectroscopic studies of the blends. The influence of interaction between the two polymers on the mechanical and the dynamic mechanical properties of the blends is analyzed in detail, and the results are interpreted on the basis of the formation of nylon—ACM graft copolymer at the interfaces. The dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) reveals a two phase morphological structure, indicating incompatibility of the blend components. The grafting reaction results in dramatic increase in both the storage modulus and the Young's modulus of blends. The presence of grafted rubber chains is reflected in the secondary transition of the rubber loss peak at higher temperature. Also, a substantial improvement in the damping properties of the blends in the service temperature range (i.e., 25 to 175 °C) is revealed from the DMTA results. The dynamic vulcanization of the ACM phase during melt mixing improves the elongation at break values of the blends.

Abstract:The addition effects of organic small molecular substances N,N'-dicyclohexyl-benzothiazyl-2-sulfenamide (DZ) and 3,9-bis{ 1, 1-dimethyl-2[β-(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)propionyloxy]ethyl}-2,4,8, 10-tetraoxaspiro[5,5]-undecane (AO-80) on the dynamic mechanical properties of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), chlorinated polypropylene (CPP), acrylate rubber (ACM) and their blends were investigated. In the case of compatible systems such as CPE/DZ and ACM/AO-80, the height of the loss tangent (tanδ) peak of a matrix polymer (CPE or ACM) increases, and its peak position shifts to a higher temperature with the addition of DZ or AO-80. By contrast, for incompatible CPE/AO-80, a novel transition appeared above the glass transition temperature of CPE. This additional transition was assigned to dissociation of the intermolecular hydrogen bond between the α-hydrogen of CPE and the hydroxyl groups of AO-80 within the AO-80-rich domain. This will provide a new concept for developing damping material. However, the minimum value between two tanδ peaks is lower. It was found that the temperature dependence of tanδ could be improved by adding chlorinated paraffin (CP) or ACM to CPE/AO-80. In addition, another ternary system of ACM/CPP with more AO-80 was found to be a very good self-adhesive damping material because of the appearance of a novel transition due to an interfacial layer of ACM/CPP.

Abstract:In this paper, ethylene-propylene-diene-rubber (EPDM) was epoxidized with an in situ formed performic acid to prepare epoxided EPDM(eEPDM). The eEPDM were used to compatibilize poly(butylenes terephthalate)(PBT) and polypropylene(PP) blends in a haake mixer. FTIR results showed that the EPDM had been epoxidized. FTIR and torque test showed the epoxy functional groups in the eEPDM can react with the carboxylic acid or hydroxyl terminal groups in PBT at the interface to form PBT-g-EPDM copolymers. SEM observation showed that these in situ formed grafted copolymers tent to concentrate along the interface to reduce the interfacial tension at the melt and suppress coalescence by steric hindrance. higher quantity of eEPDM compatibilizer in the blend results in a better compatibilized blend in terms of finer phase domains. Notched Izod impact tests showed that both the adding of rubber and the formation of PBT-g-EPDM copolymer improved the toughness of PBT/PP blends.

Abstract:PP/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) thermoplastic elastomer was prepared by the dynamic photocrosslinking method.The results from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA),SEM and mechanical tests show that the dynamic photocrosslinking increases the compatibility between PP and EPDM,leading to the obvious improvement of mechanical properties of PP/EPDM thermoplastic elastomer.With the help of WAXD,DMTA and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurements,it is confirmed that the graft copolymer PP-g-EPDM originating from dynamic photocrosslinking is formed at the interface.

Abstract:The damping performance of chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR) cannot satisfy the rigorous requirements of damping and vibration reduction. Hindered phenol can endow rubber composites with good damping performance, but these small molecules may migrate from rubber matrices. Here, a novel type of damping agent based on the hyperbranched polyester grafted hindered phenol (AG-HP102) was prepared by grafting hindered phenol (AG) with hydroxyl terminated hyperbranched polyester (HP102). It was then incorporated into chlorinated butyl rubber (CIIR) to prepare damping rubber composites. The test results showed that tan δ max of CIIR/AG-HP102 (7 phr) was 1.40, which was 32.1% higher than that of pure CIIR, 1.05. In addition, the glass transition temperature ( T g ) was increased from − 26.0 to − 16 °C. The mechanical property tests showed that the tensile strength and elongation at break of the CIIR/AG-HP102 (7 phr) composite reached 8.21 MPa and 1192%, respectively, which was 290.9% and 39.5% higher than those of pure CIIR, 2.11 MPa and 858%. These experiment results can offer some useful information for the design and fabrication of high-performance polymeric damping materials.

Abstract:Abstract The binary blend materials containing the modified recycled rubber powder with maleic a hydride modified polypropylene thermoplastic elastomer were prepared by dynamic vulcanization and blended with a variety of additives such as activated agent, accelerator, solubilizer, and the crosslinking agent. The thermal properties and mechanical properties including tensile strengths and impact strengths of pristine rubber, polypropylene and their corresponding binary blends were investigated. Besides, the effects of the amount of rubber powder, polypropylene, crosslinking agent, accelerator, activator, and solvent were studied and the microstructures of the pristine rubber, pristine polypropylene, and their corresponding binary blends were observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the compatibilizer could effectively disperse the size of 120 mesh of recycled rubber powder into the polypropylene in the same manner and the homogeneous tear section of the rubber/polypropylene thermoplastic elastomer was obtained. The results on the effects of additives on mechanical and morphological properties of recycled rubber/polypropylene binary blends guide the rational design of novel polymeric composites from recycled polymeric materials.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. This interesting study investigated the effect of Maleic Anhydride-grafted-Polypropylene/Epoxidized Natural Rubber (PP-g-MA/ENR) as a compatibilizing agent (CA) on the properties of a 30/70 Polypropylene/Natural Rubber PP/NR blends. The effect of dynamic vulcanization with sulfur-donors (i.e.: Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (TMTD) and 4,4 Dithiodimorpholine (DTDM)) which were used as vulcanizing agents was also reported. Several formulations of TPVs with different concentrations of CA (from 5 to 15 phr) were prepared by mixing in the molten state using a Haake Rheocord 90. The structural analysis of dual compatibilizer was examined by FTIR spectroscopy. The rheological behavior was examined using Haake Rheocord 90. The mechanical properties were determined by the tensile measurements. The dynamic mechanical thermal properties were investigated by DMA. A morphological examination was conducted using SEM Microscopy, respectively. FTIR analysis confirmed reactions between the MA group in PP-g-MA and the epoxy groups in ENR, resulting in ENR-grafted PP with an ester and acid-based linkage. The Haake plastograms revealed a proportional increase in the final mixing torque value with the increasing content of CA. The mechanical results exhibited higher values in terms of tensile strength and Young's modulus for the TPVs containing CA compared to un-compatibilized ones. The compatibilized TPV blends exhibited a noteworthy increase in storage modulus and a notable decrease in loss tangent values with the CA concentration increased. Furthermore, the TPVs show two distinct-phase morphologies. That is, the TPV with CA showed the presence of smaller vulcanized rubber particles dispersed within the PP matrix, a phenomenon that becomes more pronounced with higher CA contents.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and the crystal morphological structures of the dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) blends have been studied by means of mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The dynamically photocrosslinking of the PP/EPDM blends can improve the mechanical properties considerably, especially the-notched Izod impact strength at low temperatures. The data obtained from the mechanical tests show that the notched Izod impact strength of the dynamically photocrosslinked sample with 30% EPDM at -20degreesC is about six times that of the uncrosslinked sample with the same EPDM component. The results from the gel content, the results of WAXD, and the DSC measurements reveal the enhanced mechanism of the impact strength for the dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends as follows: (1) There exists the crosslinking of the EPDM phase in the photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends; (2) The beta-type crystal structure of PP is formed and the content of a-type crystal decreases with increasing the EPDM component; (3) The graft copolymer of PP-g-EPDM is formed at the interface between the PP and EPDM components. All the above changes of the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of the PP/EPDM blends at low temperatures.

Abstract:The copolymer of glycidyl methacrylate and acrylate monomer(ACM)was used to toughen polylactide(PLA).The impact test result indicates that the impact strength of the blends increases first and then decreases with the ACM content increasing.When the mass faction of ACM is 25%,the impact strength reaches the maximum value of 670J/m.The tensile test shows that the Young's modulus and yielding stress of the blends decrease with the ACM content increasing.The glass transition temperature(Tg)of ACM increases with the ACM content andTgof PLA changes little.DSC test indicates the cold crystallization temperature of PLA decreases with the addition of ACM.SEM shows that ACM disperses in the PLA matrix uniformly when the mass fraction of ACM is 10%,and the phase domain size increases with the ACM content increasing.Deformation zone observed by SEM shows that the cavitation takes place for ACM and the shear yielding occurs for the PLA matrix.

Abstract:In order to enhance the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion between epoxy and liquid carboxyl-terminated butadiene acrylonitrile (CTBN) rubber, an initiator was introduced into the mixture and heated to initiate the cross-linking reaction of CTBN. After the addition of curing agents, the CTBN/epoxy blends with a localized interpenetrating network structure were prepared. The mechanical properties and morphologies of pre-crosslinked and non-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends were investigated. The results show that the tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength of pre-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends are significantly higher than those of non-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends, which is primarily due to the enhanced interfacial strength caused by the chemical bond between the two phases and the localized interpenetrating network structure. Both pre-crosslinked and non-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends show a bimodal distribution of micron- and nano-sized rubber particles. However, pre-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends have smaller micron-sized rubber particles and larger nano-sized rubber particles than non-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends. The dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the storage modulus of pre-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends is higher than that of non-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends. The glass transition temperature of the CTBN phase in pre-crosslinked CTBN/epoxy blends increases slightly compared with the CTBN/epoxy system. The pre-crosslinking of rubber is a promising method for compatibilization and controlling the morphology of rubber-modified epoxy materials.

Abstract:The influence of KhBK-139 chlorobutyl caoutchouc on the plasto-elastic, rheometric properties of the rubber mixture, as well as on the physicomechanical and dynamic characteristics of the rubber based on SKMS-30ARK methylstyrene-butadiene and SKI-3 isoprene caoutchoucs was examined. The rubber mixture based on SKMS-30ARK and SKI-3 caoutchoucs contained sulfur, 2,2′-dibenzthiazolyl disulfide, Guanid F, zinc oxide, stearic acid, N-isopropyl-N′-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine, N-(cyclohexylthio)phthalimide, rosin, industrial oil I-12A, carbon black P 324, and trans-polynorbornene. The rubber mixture was prepared on LB 320 160/160 laboratory rolls. The plasto-elastic properties of the rubber mixture were studied on a MonTech MV 3000 Basic viscometer at 120°C. The vulcanization data for the rubber mixture were examined on a MonTech MDR 3000 Basic rheometer at 150°C for 30 min in accordance with ASTM D2084-79. Standard samples for determining the physicomechanical properties were vulcanized at a temperature of 150°C for 30 min in a P-V-100-3RT-2-PCD vulcanizing press. The main characteristics of the vulcanizates were determined according to the standards applicable in the rubber industry. The dynamic parameters (elasticity modulus and tangent of the mechanical loss angle) of the vulcanizates of various variants of the rubber mixture were studied at room temperature on a Metravib VHF 104 dynamic mechanical analyzer at a strain rate of 0.01% and a vibration frequency of 1000 Hz. It was shown that the vulcanizates combining all the three caoutchoucs are characterized by satisfactory stress-strain properties. Partial replacement of SKMS-30 ARK and SKI-3 caoutchoucs by KhBK-139 chlorobutyl caoutchouc leads to increases in the elasticity modulus and the tangent of mechanical loss angle of the rubber. The rubber containing SKMS-30ARK 50.00, SKI-3 20.00, and KhBK-139 30.00 parts by weight exhibits the best sound-absorbing properties.

Abstract:The mechanical properties, compatibility, flame retardancy property, hot-air ageing resistance of hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene rubber (HNBR) / chloroprene rubber (CR) blends were investigated. With increasing CR, stress at 100% elongation, shore A hardness, limited oxygen index of HNBR/CR blends increased, while the tensile strength, hot-air aging resistance of the blends decreased. Differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) revealed that it’s incompatible with both HNBR and CR before vulcanization, however they became compatible completely after vulcanization as indicated by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA).

Abstract:The mechanical properties and crystal morphological structures of dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) blends have been studied by mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WARD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Dynamically photocrosslinking of PP/EPDM blends can improve the mechanical properties considerably, especially the notched Izod impact strength at low temperature. Data obtained from mechanical tests show that the notched Izod impact strength of a dynamically photocrosslinked sample with 30% EPDM at -20 degreesC is about six times that of an uncrosslinked sample with the same EPDM component. The results from the WARD, SEM, and DSC measurements reveal the enhanced mechanism of impact strength for the dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends as follows: (i) the beta-type crystal structure of PP is formed and the interplanar distance of alpha-type crystal increases slightly with an increase in the EPDM component; (ii) the droplet size of the EPDM phase in the photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blends is obviously reduced and the droplet number is increased with an increase in the EPDM component during the dynamical photocrosslinking process; (iii) the graft copolymer of PP-g-EPDM is formed at the interface between PP and EPDM components. All the above changes from the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of PP/EPDM blends at low temperatures.

Abstract:Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT)/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymer blends compatibilized by a mixture of styrene-acrylonitrile-maleic anhydride (ASMA) copolymers and epoxy resin (EP) were prepared through melt reactive extrusion. The morphological, rheological, and mechanical properties of these blends were studied. The epoxy functional groups of EP can react with anhydride groups of ASMA and the PBT terminal groups (-OH and -COOH) simultaneously, leading to the formation of ASMA-EP-PBT graft copolymers. Because of the effective compatibilization of these copolymers at the interface, finer dispersed phase morphologies were obtained. Compared with PBT/ABS/ASMA blends, the addition of EP induced a more stable molten phase structure, with increases of storage moduli, loss moduli, and dynamic viscosities. Results indicated that 1.5 wt% of the EP in the blends was most suited for the compatibilization. Impact properties of these blends were also investigated.
Mechanical and Morphological Properties and Deformation Mechanisms of Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene/Poly(ϵ-Caprolactone) Blends with Varied Matrix Composition

Abstract:Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and poly(e-caprolactone) blends (ABS/PCL) were prepared by mixing styrene-co-acrylonitrile (SAN), polybutadiene-g-SAN (PB-g-SAN), and PCL with varied SAN and PCL composition. PCL is miscible with SAN and can improve the matrix toughness. The impact strength and elongation at break of the ABS/PCL blends increased with the PCL content. When the PCL content was lower than 20 wt%, the improvement of impact strength for the blends was not obvious. A significant increase of impact strength took place when the PCL content was between 20 and 25 wt%. When PCL content was more than 20 wt%, the impact strength was higher than 800 J/m which shows the super toughness. The addition of PCL improved the dispersed phase morphology of PB-g-SAN in the matrix and the interfacial adhesion increased. Deformation observations showed that, when the PCL content was lower than 20 wt%, crazing was the major deformation mode. When the PCL content was 20 wt%, crazing and slight shear yielding could be found. When the PCL content was more than 20 wt%, cavitation of rubber particles and shear yielding of the matrix were the major deformation modes. The cause of the change of the deformation mode lies in the varied matrix composition which modifies the crazing and yielding stresses of the matrix and the final fracture mode and impact toughness.

Abstract:A dynamically photocrosslinked polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene (EPDM) rubber thermoplastic elastomer was prepared by simultaneously exposing the elastomer to UV light while melt-mixing in the presence of a photoinitiator as well as a crosslinking agent. The effects of dynamic photocrosslinking and blend composition on the mechanical properties, morphological structure, and thermal behavior of PP/EPDM blends were investigated. The results showed that after photocrosslinking, tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation at break were improved greatly. Moreover, the notched Izod impact strength was obviously enhanced compared with corresponding uncrosslinked blend. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) morphological analysis showed that for uncrosslinked PP/EPDM blends, the cavitation of EPDM particles was the main toughening mechanism; whereas for dynamically photocrosslinked blends, shear yielding of matrix became the main energy absorption mechanism. The DSC curves showed that for each dynamically photocrosslinked PP/EPDM blend, there was a new smaller melting peak at about 152degreesC together with a main melting peak at about 166degreesC. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) indicated that the compatibility between EPDM and PP was improved by dynamic photocrosslinking. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
Effects of Dynamic Crosslinking on Crystallization, Structure and Mechanical Property of Ethylene-Octene Elastomer/EPDM Blends

Abstract:The dynamic crosslinking method has been widely used to prepare rubber/plastic blends with thermoplastic properties, and the rubber phase is crosslinked in these blends. Both polyolefin elastomer (POE) and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) can be crosslinked, which is different from usual dynamic crosslinking components. In this paper, dynamic crosslinked POE/EPDM blends were prepared. For POE/EPDM blends without dynamic crosslinking, EPDM can play a nucleation role, leading to POE crystallizing at a higher temperature. After dynamic crosslinking, the crosslinking points hinder the mobility of POE chains, resulting in smaller crystals, but having too many crosslinking points suppresses POE crystallization. Synchrotron radiation studies show that phase separation occurs and phase regions form in non-crosslinked blends. After crosslinking, crosslinking points connecting EPDM and part of POE chains, enabling more POE to enter the EPDM phase and thus weakening phase separation, indicates that dynamic crosslinking improves the compatibility of POE/EPDM, also evidenced by a lower β conversion temperature and higher α conversion temperature than neat POE from dynamic mechanical analysis. Moreover, crosslinking networks hinder the crystal fragmentation during stretching and provide higher strength, resulting in 8.3% higher tensile strength of a 10 wt% EPDM blend than neat POE and almost the same elongation at break. Though excessive crosslinking points offer higher strength, they weaken the elongation at break.

Abstract:Acrylic rubber(ACM)was synthesized with the solution polymerization method and the effect of methyl acrylate(MA)on the copolymerization and ACM properties was investigated.The reaction rate of polymerization improved with the addtion of MA and no obvious change of conversion could be found.NMR results showed the copolymer composition was adjacent with the feed ratio.The gel content of ACM at higher temperature increased with the MA content.The thermo-decomposition temperature and the faster decomposition rate temperature of ACM improved with the addtion of MA and the heat-resistance of ACM was modified.

Abstract:In the present study, solvent-based acrylic copolymers were successfully synthesized by “solution polymerization” using methyl allyl polyethylene glycols ether, acrylic acid, and 2-ethyl hexyl acrylate for the fabrication of high-performance pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. Different techniques (NMR, FTIR, TGA/DTG, Contact Angles, PSAs Test) were used to characterize the physical and thermal properties of the copolymers. The obtained copolymers were investigated as a possible adhesive for permanent or removable applications such as security labels for power equipment, foil tape for HVAC ductwork, automotive interior trim assembly, and sound/vibration dampening films. When the contact angles of the synthesized copolymers were examined, it was observed that while the amount of acrylic acid in the copolymer content was constant, the contact angle increased with the increase in the percentage of HPEG. In addition, while the amount of HPEG was constant in the copolymers, it was observed that the contact angle decreased with the increase in the percentage of acrylic acid. As a result, it was determined that the obtained copolymers showed hydrophilic character and wetted the contact surface. When the thermal properties of the copolymers were examined, while the acrylic acid ratio was constant, the thermal stability increased with increasing HPEG amount. While the HPEG ratio is constant in the copolymer content, the decrease in thermal stability with increasing acrylic acid is thought to be due to decarboxylation. Also, 7% reduction in DTG curves is evidence of decarboxylation of copolymers. According to the results of the pressure-sensitive adhesive test, it was observed that the surface wetting degree of the copolymers changed in direct proportion to the amount of acrylic acid increased and inversely proportional to the amount of HPEG, and the potential of the adhesives obtained in addition to being high-performance pressure sensitive adhesive tapes.Graphical abstract
