Abstract:Inspired by the geometric structure of ecribellate spider capture silk and its spinning characteristics, we propose a one-step electrohydrodynamic method to fabricate bead-on-string heterostructured fibers (BSHFs). By combining electrospinning and electrospraying strategies using a sprayable outer fluid with low viscosity and a spinnable inner fluid with high viscosity in a coaxial jetting process, hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) beads are successfully imprinted on a hydrophobic polystyrene string. It is demonstrated that the BSHFs are capable of intelligently responding to environmental change. With a change in relative humidity, the fibers show a segmented swelling and shrinking behavior in the "bead" parts whereas the "string" parts remain the same. The elastic BSHFs with alternating hydrophilic and hydrophobic surface characteristics represent a type of mesoscale analogues that block copolymers and may bring about new properties and applications. Moreover, the combined electrohydrodynamic approach developed herein should open new routes to multifunctional one-dimensional heterostructured materials.

Abstract:Topography and microstructure engineering are rapidly evolving areas of importance for biomedical and pharmaceutical remits. Here, PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) microbubbles (diameter range ~126 to 414 μm) were used to fabricate beaded (beads-on) nanofibers using an electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) technique. Mean fiber diameter, inter-bead distance, and aspect ratio (AR) were investigated by regulating EHDA process parameters. PVA fibers (diameter range ~233 to 737 nm) were obtained possessing bead ARs in the range of ~10 to 56%. AR was used to modulate hydrophilicity and active release.

Abstract:Here, a new method is demonstrated that uses sideways pulsed laser deposition to deliberately nanowires into a desired shape after growth and fabricate are shaped composite nanowire arrays of a wide range of nanomaterials. The starting nanowires can be ZnO, but the materials to be deposited can be metallic semiconductor, or ceramic depending on the application. This method provides a general approach for rational fabrication of a wide range of side be sire or "core-shell" nanowire arrays with controllable degree of bending and internal strain. Considering the ZnO is a piezoelectric and semiconductive materials, its electric properties change when deformed. Thus technique has potential applications in tunable electronics, optoelectronics, and piezotronics.

Abstract:A novel method for fabricating diversiform suspended nanostructures is reported. The method utilizes focused-ion-beam (FIB) induced material redistribution and Rayleigh-Plateau instability, which determine the resulting shapes of formed nanostructures. By choosing target materials, their predefined patterns as well as FIB settings, we have achieved parallel nanofabrication of various kinds including nanostrings, nanobead chains and nanopore membranes with smooth surfaces due to the self-perfection effect of the material redistribution upon the minimization of system free energy. The diameters of the nanostrings and nanopores reach about 10 nm and 200 nm, respectively. The average period of the nanobead chains is 250 nm.

Abstract:We develop a method for the fabrication of functional microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) by selectively filling the air holes with liquid phase materials, where we utilize the dependence of filling speed on the size of the air holes. As a demonstration, we construct a hybrid MOF by filling the center hollow core of a triangular lattice photonic crystal fiber with dye-doped curable polymer, and experimentally observe the two-photon fluorescence from the hybrid MOF. Abstract:High-aspect-ratio square optical fiber arrays enable massive applications from nanoscale to mesoscale, while fabrication is becoming a challenge. Here, a simple and inexpensive method is proposed based on capillary-induced self-assembly and tailored external constraints. The steady-state solution of the liquid morphology equation indicates that the interaction between optical fibers and liquid drives the array into shapes with lower free energy. Therefore, a well-designed external constraint, which affects the balance between capillarity and elastic restoration, can regulate the final arrangement of the optical fibers. Based on the dynamic analyses of the droplet-to-column transitions, liquid flow along optical fibers, and approach of optical fiber driven by liquid bridge and viscous damping, the factors influencing the capillary-induced self-assembly process are investigated, and the fabrication conditions are thus optimized. Experimental results verified the proposed method. The fabricated vector tactile sensing probe achieves a square array with aspect ratios of similar to 135. Its displacement resolutions in three dimensions are proven better than 60 nm.

Abstract:In-fiber structured particles and filament array have been recently emerging, providing unique advantages of feasible fabrication, diverse structures and sophisticated functionalities. This review will focus on the progress of this topic mainly from the perspective of fluid instabilities. By suppressing the capillary instability, the uniform layered structures down to nanometers are attained with the suitable materials selection. On the other hand, by utilizing capillary instability via post-drawing thermal treatment, the unprecedent structured particles can be designed with multimaterials for multifunctional fiber devices. Moreover, an interesting filamentation instability of a stretching viscous sheet has been identified during thermal drawing, resulting in an array of filaments. This review may inspire more future work to produce versatile devices for fiber electronics, either at a single fiber level or in large-scale fabrics and textiles, simply by manipulating and controlling fluid instabilities.

Abstract:Abstract Nature has a remarkable ability to create multifunctional fibers, such as spider silk, by precisely controlling structures across various scales. However, replicating this in high‐speed spun synthetic fibers is challenging due to the absence of life‐specific forces and interactions required for manipulating composition, gradients, and structures. Here, a novel droplet‐coupled pultrusion spinning technique is demonstrated for industrial‐scale production of microfibers with hierarchical structures. Droplets spontaneously form on the surface of high‐speed spun fibers to tailor multiscale hierarchical structures, resulting in a nonlinear viscoelastic core embedded with anharmonic nanosprings consisting of amorphous and crystalline domains and a periodically reinforced nanofiber skin. These structural hierarchies enable unique mechanical property combinations including nonlinear viscoelasticity, large extensibility (613%), record‐high toughness (536 MJ m −3 ), highly efficient impact energy absorption, vibration damping and wide temperature adaptability (−67.4 to 278.9 °C). Additionally, the structured bioinspired fibers exhibit low‐frequency phononic bandgap and anomalous dispersion of mechanical waves. The droplet‐based approach allows precise control over heterogeneity at multiple scales within the identical components leading to impressive mechanical performance and additional functionalities, and is consider that it could be applied to the design of the next era of hierarchically structured nanocomposites for a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Hybrid optical fibers have been widely investigated in different architectures to build integrated fiber photonic devices and achieve various applications. Here we proposed and fabricated hybrid microfiber waveguides with self-growing polymer nanofilms on the surfaces of microfibers triggered by evanescent field of light for the first time. We have demonstrated the polymer nanofilm of ∼50 nm can be grown on the microfiber with length up to 15 mm. In addition, the roughness of nanofilm can be optimized by controlling the triggering laser power and exposure duration, and the total transmission loss of the fabricated hybrid microfiber is less than 2 dB within a wide wavelength range. The hybrid polymer nanofilm microfiber waveguides have been characterized and their relative humidity (RH) responses have also been tested, indicating a potential for RH sensing. Our fabrication method may also be extended to construct the hybrid microfibers with different functional photopolymer materials.

Abstract:Herein, a simple approach for the fabrication of luminous self-assembled fibers based on halogen-bonded azopyridine complexes and oleic acid-modified quantum dots (QDs) is reported. The QDs uniformly align on the edge of the self-assembled fibers through the formation of van der Waals force between the alkyl chain of oleic acid on the QD surface and the alkyl chain of the halogen-bonded complexes, 15Br or 15I. Furthermore, the intermolecular interaction mechanism was elucidated by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This approach results in retention of the fluorescence properties of the QDs in the fibers. In addition, the bromine-bonded fibers can be assembled into tailored directional fibers upon evaporation of the solvent (tetrahydrofuran) when using capillaries via the capillary force. Interestingly, the mesogenic properties of the halogen-bonded complexes are preserved in the easily prepared halogen-bonded fluorescent fibers; this provides new insight into the design of functional self-assembly materials.

Abstract:Nano/micro fibers doped with metal nanocrystals are of great interest both theorectically and practically. Nevertheless, the ordered assembly of metal nanocrystals with desired patterns in nano/micro fibers still remains a big challenge, which constrains the further development of the performance of the material. In this investigation, we propose a facile strategy based on the sol-gel and coaxial electrospinning technique to fabricate silica submicron fibers incorporating ordered 1D array of silver nanoparticles. The silver nanoparticles align strictly in a head-to-tail manner in silica fibers, and their size, shape and population are conveniently controlled through tailoring the properties of the precursor solutions and the electrospinning parameters. Therefore, the plasmon property of the obtained fibers is tuned with great freedom. The fabrication method applied here holds great potential for low-cost preparation of metal/glass composite fibers for nano/micro optical applications in general.

Abstract:In-fiber fluid instability can be harnessed to realize scalable microparticles fabrication with tunable sizes and multifunctional characteristics making it competitive in comparison to conventional microparticles fabrication methods. However, since in-fiber fluid instability has to be induced via thermal annealing and the resulting microparticles can only be collected after dissolving the fiber cladding, obtaining contamination-free particles for high-temperature incompatible materials remains great challenge. Herein, confinement-free fluid instability is demonstrated to fabricate polymeric microparticles in a facile manner induced by the ultralow surface energy of the superamphiphobic surface. The polymer solution columns break up into uniform droplets then form spherical particles spontaneously in seconds at ambient temperature. This method can be applied to a variety of polymers spanning an exceptionally wide range of sizes: from 1 mm down to 1 µm. With the aid of microfluidic spinning instrument, a large quantity of microparticles can be obtained, making this method promising for scaling up production. Notably, through simple modification of the feed solution configuration, composite/structured micromaterials can also be produced, including quantum-dots-labeled fluorescent particles, magnetic particles, core-shell particles, microcapsules, and necklace-like microfibers. This method, with general applicability and facile control, is envisioned to have great prospects in the field of polymer microprocessing.

Abstract:We present a novel and efficient approach to generating Bessel-like beams through fabricating self-growing polymer microtips at the facet of single-mode fibers. To produce these beams, the length and shape of microtips were precisely optimized. Specifically, the convex droplet height and its photopolymerization parameters feature prominently in Bessel-like beams via microtips. A wide conversion bandwidth of the microtips and self-healing properties of the produced Bessel-like beam were also investigated in detail. Our microtips provide an effective, low-cost, and ultra-compact way for Bessel-like beams generation.

Abstract:Evaporation-induced self-assembly of colloidal particles is one of the most versatile fabrication routes to obtain large-area colloidal crystals; however, the formation of uncontrolled "drying cracks" due to gradual solvent evaporation represents a significant challenge of this process. While several methods are reported to minimize crack formation during evaporation-induced colloidal assembly, here an approach is reported to take advantage of the crack formation as a patterning tool to fabricate microscopic photonic structures with controlled sizes and geometries. This is achieved through a mechanistic understanding of the fracture behavior of three different types of opal structures, namely, direct opals (colloidal crystals with no matrix material), compound opals (colloidal crystals with matrix material), and inverse opals (matrix material templated by a sacrificial colloidal crystal). This work explains why, while direct and inverse opals tend to fracture along the expected {111} planes, the compound opals exhibit a different cracking behavior along the nonclose-packed {110} planes, which is facilitated by the formation of cleavage-like fracture surfaces. The discovered principles are utilized to fabricate photonic microbricks by programming the crack initiation at specific locations and by guiding propagation along predefined orientations during the self-assembly process, resulting in photonic microbricks with controlled sizes and geometries.

Abstract:We report a simple yet robust method for fabricating single perovskite quantum dot (QD) decorated fiber nanotips. In this method, a single QD is directly picked up and subsequently glued on the apex of a specially fabricated cantilever fiber tip with a high success rate (approx. 70%) without using expensive close-loop feedback systems. Thanks to the flexibility and robustness of the fiber tips, no damage of the tips was observed in the process. Moreover, nanocrystal (NC) dispersing technique was developed to avoid undesired aggregations of QDs, and it guarantees that only one QD is glued each time. Finally, we demonstrate that this technique can also be applied to other oil-phase synthesized NCs, including CdSe QDs and upconversion luminescent NCs. It leads to many important applications on probing the local environment using high performance luminescent nanoprobes.

Abstract:Manipulation of small amounts of liquids is of great importance in bio/chemical analysis, environmental engi-neering, medical diagnostics, etc. Novel platforms with systematic maneuverability and expanded applications are highly desired. Here, inspired by the directional liquid motion ability of natural fibrous materials, we present light-responsive spindle-knotted microfibers from piezoelectric microfluidics for droplet manipulation. The graphene oxide (GO) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [poly(NIPAM)] components endow the fiber with near-infrared (NIR) stimuli-responsiveness. Besides, its unique structure enables droplet pinning in the knots of the fiber. During NIR irradiation, the fiber can shrink and turn hydrophobic, which resulted in directional droplet migration from one knot to another. Based on this phenomenon, controllable droplet merging could be initiated under light control, and chemical reactions could be carried out on-site. More intriguingly, systematic manip-ulation of droplet pathways was achieved through a woven fiber network, by which multi-step reactions could occur orderly. These features indicated that the bio-inspired photo-controllable spindle-knotted fibers would find vast opportunities in broad applications, such as micro-reactors and optofluidic systems.
