Abstract:This Special Issue is dedicated to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at Nanjing University. The aim is to present a picture of materials research at Nanjing University and stimulate more collaborations between Nanjing University and institutions around the world. Established in 1902, Nanjing University (sometimes Nanking University) is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education in China. Maintaining good momentum in teaching, research, social service, as well as cultural inheritance and innovation, the university perennially ranks as one of the top academic institutions in China. In 1998, it became a member of the elite C9 League of Chinese universities. In 2017, it was accredited as a Class A institution in the Double First-Class University Plan, a government initiative to cultivate an elite group of Chinese universities into world-class institutions. These distinctions provide Nanjing University with the opportunity to develop into a highly competitive first-rate university in China, Asia, and worldwide. Today, Nanjing University has two main campuses: Xianlin Campus and Gulou Campus, with 31 schools, 1 national laboratory, 7 national key laboratories, and 9 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education. Over 13 243 undergraduates, 19 902 graduate students, and 3378 international students are studying at Nanjing University. Meanwhile, the university has assembled a faculty team made up of the most accomplished scholars in China, including 28 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 10 national distinguished teachers. CEAS at Nanjing University was founded in December 2009, in line with the successful practice of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, based on the advantageous disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, and microelectronics in Nanjing University. By condensing, crossing, and fusing these prior disciplines, CEAS covers multidisciplinary research on science and engineering and develops innovative solutions to tackle major societal challenges. Currently, CEAS focuses on four cutting-edge engineering disciplines and national strategic priorities, with each focus area corresponding to an academic department, namely materials science and engineering (MSE), quantum electronics and optical engineering, biomedical engineering (BME), and energy science and engineering (ESE). In 2019, a new 60 000 m2 world-class building (Figure 1) for research and education opened to house the academic departments and research centers, embodying CEAS';s global vision and forward-looking plan. Materials science and advanced engineering is a comprehensive interdisciplinary field, living in a collaborative space of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. Besides CEAS, materials research is distributed in several other schools at Nanjing University, including the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, the School of Physics, and the School of Electronic Science and Engineering (ESE). There are also several research platforms to support materials research and development, including the National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, the State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry, the Key Laboratory of Mesoscopic Chemistry, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Artificial Functional Materials, the Jiangsu Research Center for Optical Communication System and Network Engineering, the International Research Center for Quantum Information and Photonics Technology, etc. On the 10th anniversary of the founding of CEAS at Nanjing University, we are delighted to present here a collection of 13 Reviews and 9 Progress Reports. Taken together, the 22 articles in this special issue provide a dynamic picture of recent research activities and achievements in materials research at Nanjing University. The authors are mainly faculty members from CEAS, but not exclusively. Contributions from the faculty members in the School of Physics, Chemistry, and ESE are included as well to show the integrated collaborative environment at Nanjing University. In the field of energy materials and batteries, Haoshen Zhou et al. (article number 1903790) present an overview of recent research and progress in Li–CO2 and Na–CO2 batteries, including crucial reaction mechanisms on cathodes, catalyst design, electrolyte selection, and anode protection. Jia Zhu et al. (article number 1907392) summarize the recent progress in the development of tin halide and mixed lead–tin halide perovskite solar cells, including methods, composition, additives, and monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Huigang Zhang et al. (article number 1903808) focus on the latest progress of electrodeposition technologies in fabricating lithium-based batteries. Zheng Hu et al. (article number 1904177) present the up-to-date synthetic strategies of carbon-based nanocages, the utilization of their unique porous structure and morphology for the construction of composites with foreign active species, and their applications toward advanced energy storage and conversion. Junjie Zhu et al. (article number 1903796) highlight the research progress of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction coupling with a photoanode/bioanode from the perspective of improving the energy utilization efficiency of the whole reaction system. In the field of optical materials, Yanqing Lu et al. (article number 1903665) discuss the recent research and development in liquid-crystal-mediated geometric phase planar optics and provide an outlook regarding potential prospects. Xiaopeng Hu et al. (article number 1903775) highlight recent research and development in nonlinear beam shaping in domain-engineered ferroelectric crystals. Mu Wang et al. (article number 1904646) highlight some recent developments in realizing broadband electromagnetic metamaterials via dispersion compensation, nonresonant effects, and a number of tradeoff approaches. Shuming Wang et al. (article number 1904935) briefly review the recent progress in chromatic-dispersion manipulation based on metasurfaces. Ting Xu et al. (article number 1903787) highlight recent research and development in morphology engineering of photonic metamaterial absorbers, and related interdisciplinary applications. In the field of artificial functional materials, Yanfeng Chen et al. (article number 1903639) review the state-of-the-art developments in the field of complex non-Hermitian physics, focusing on parity-time symmetric optics and photonics. Yong Hu et al. (article number 1904337) summarize recent advances regarding strategies harnessing nanoplatforms to conquer multiple barriers possessed by tumors and cancer cells. Di Wu et al. (article number 1904123) review recent progress of ferroelectric-tunnel-junction devices with an emphasis on the modulation of potential barriers. Feng Miao et al. (article number 1903800) review recent research and development of high-performance device applications based on van der Waals heterostructures and discuss a few key challenges and opportunities for the future development of multifunctional and high-performance devices. Jinglin Zuo et al. (article number 1903762) highlight recent research and development in self-healing polymers based on coordination bonds. Junming Liu et al. (article number 1904508) present a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the physics and multifunctionalities of the well-known Jeff = 1/2 antiferromagnet Sr2IrO4. Jun Xu et al. (article number 1903945) give a comprehensive review on the important topic of planar growth of semiconducting nanowires for integration and applications. Fengqi Song et al. (article number 1904593) review the development process and the recent progress in realization of exotic quantized transport such as the quantum Hall effect and the quantum anomalous Hall effect based on topological insulator materials. In the field of advanced material characterizations, Peng Wang et al. (article number 1903747) review the recent research and development of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for understanding fundamental problems in all-solid-state lithium batteries. Yu Deng et al. (article number 1906105) highlight recent research and development regarding in situ mechanical TEM/STEM techniques. In the field of optoelectronics, Xinran Wang et al. (article number 1902039) discuss the recent developments made on high-performance graphene hybrid photodetectors especially in the context of new materials, device designs, integration with Si platforms, and flexible optoelectronics. Bin Liu et al. (article number 1904354) present their recent progress in the field of III-nitrides-based optoelectronic devices, including efficient hybrid micro/nano-LEDs, low-threshold nanolasers, and high-gain UV avalanche photodiodes. Drawing on the talents of faculties across the university, as well as the generous support and help from our friends in China and abroad, Nanjing University will produce not only world-class knowledge and technologies, but nurture students and scholars with a global view and competence, who can meet the major challenges and opportunities posed by an increasingly globalized society as well. Abstract:This Special Issue of Advanced Materials, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) is a collection of Reviews and Progress Reports articles by the faculty members and alumni of HIT, introducing the most innovative multidisciplinary research activities including materials science and engineering at HIT. Founded in 1920, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) has developed into an open, multidisciplinary, research-oriented, leading national university with science and engineering as its core. HIT has formed the pattern of “One University, Three Campuses—Harbin Campus, Weihai Campus, and Shenzhen Campus” (Figure 1). From “the Cradle of Engineers” to “International First-Rate Innovative Talents” as its goal, HIT has always been at the forefront of modern technology and national development. In 1954, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) became one of the Chinese top-six leading universities. In 1996, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) was the first batch of universities included in the Project 211 list. In 1999, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) became one of the top-nine key universities to be preferentially built according to the standards of internationally renowned universities. In 2009, Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) became a member of the top-nine University Union (C9) in China. In 2017, HIT was included in the first batch of universities on the list of the Double First-Class initiative; 17 disciplines became Double First-Class disciplines. Currently, HIT has 20 schools, 2 affiliated hospitals, 10 national key laboratories, and 4 national engineering research centers. The university jointly with China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation built a national “big science facility”—the Space Environment Simulation Research Infrastructure (SESRI) and a Collaborative Innovation Center of Astronautical Science and Technology. HIT's education system particularly emphasizes “Strictest Standard, Greatest Effort”, providing students with a wide range of vigorous training. Therefore, HIT has cultured a large number of world-renowned scientists and engineers, and achieved a serials of “firsts” in scientific research and technology innovation in the past years, such as China's first simulation computer, the first intelligent chess-playing computer, the first arc-welding robots, the first world advanced-level system radar, the first CMOS-chip IC card, the first Chinese satellite–Earth high-speed laser communication test, the first giant computer-aided real-time 3D image construction system, the first microcomputer-operated fiber twiner, and the first large-scale tank-head-forming machine, independently developing 7 satellites in China etc. The famous “Shenzhou Series Spaceship Project” received massive assistance from HIT in the field of large-scale land-based space-simulation equipment, returning cabin deformation and orthopraxy welding technology, a three-axel simulation experimental platform, and fault diagnosis. In a 2020 US News & World Report, HIT was ranked 6th in the list of Best Global Universities for Engineering. The field of materials science and engineering is the most rigorous one at HIT, and involves cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, and applied research. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by Clarivate Analytics, materials science research at HIT was ranked 9th in the world when considering the number of publications in 2010–2020, and 25th considering citations. According to a 2020 US News & World Report, HIT was ranked 40th in a list of Best Global Universities for Materials Science. This Special Issue of Advanced Materials features 10 Reviews and 14 Progress Reports, with major attention paid to the fields of materials design, fabrication and characterization, catalytic materials, solar-energy materials, energy-storage materials, composite materials, smart materials and flexible electronics, and biomaterials/biomimetics. In the field of materials design, Prof. Jiecai Han and Prof. Jiaqi Zhu summarize the research progress of diamond color centers based on the problems faced in the application of diamond color centers (article number 2000891). Prof. Guanying Chen provides an account of the recent progress on the conceptual design of bright lanthanide-doped near-infrared nanoparticles as well as their cutting-edge biophotonics applications ranging from single nanoparticle imaging to deep-tissue theranostics (article number 2000678). Prof. Zuhuang Chen highlights the recent progress on topological structures in the ferroic thin films and heterostructures (article number 2000857). Prof. Liang Zhen and Prof. Cheng-Yan Xu summarize the recent progress on electrochemical intercalation of foreign species into atomically thin 2D materials for structural phase transitions and device applications (article number 2000581). In the field of materials fabrication and characterization, Prof. Bin Guo surveys the recent progress of micro/nanoforming techniques for fabricating 3D metallic structures (article number 20200893). Prof. Shumin Xiao provides an account of recent progress on the patterning and integration techniques of micro- and nanostructured perovskites for optoelectronic and photonic applications (article number 2000306). In the field of catalytic materials, the progress report by Prof. Gang Wu aims to highlight important but challenging electrocatalysis associated with sustainable water (oxygen evolution and reduction reactions) and nitrogen (nitrogen reduction and ammonia oxidation reactions) cycles for energy and environmental sustainability (article number 2000381). Prof. Bo Song outlines the recent advances in design and modulation strategies of 2D transition-metal dichalcogenides for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (article number 1907818). Dr. Yuyan Shao, Dr. Lei Du, and Prof. Yong Wang review the current understanding of degradation of low-platinum-group-metal (PGM) and PGM-free catalysts in proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells and the progress on materials-based solutions (article number 1908232). In the field of solar energy materials, Prof. Zhiyong Tang outlines the state-of-the-art progress in asymmetric photocatalysis by heterogeneous nanomaterials (article number 202001731). Prof. Ping Xu provides a comprehensive review on surface-plasmon-assisted/enhanced electrocatalysis and photocatalysis (article number 2000086). In the field of energy-storage materials, Prof. Chunsheng Wang reviews recent advances and gives perspective on all-solid-state Li/S batteries using sulfide solid electrolytes (article number 2000751). Prof. Jiajun Wang highlights the interface issues, solutions, and recent developments of solid-state batteries for next-generation electrochemical energy storage (article number 2000721). Prof. Kai He outlines the recent development of in situ electron microscopy for rechargeable ion batteries (article number 2000699). In the field of composite materials, Prof. Lujun Huang and Prof. Lin Geng provide a comprehensive review on smart multiscale architecture and superior performance of titanium matrix composites (article number 202000688). Prof. Yibin Li outlines the recent progress on graphene/polymer nanocomposites for multifunctional applications (article number 2001105). In the field of smart materials, Prof. Jinsong Leng provides a comprehensive review on the mechanisms and applications of shape-memory polymers and composites, and highlights the design and regulation of the shape-memory effect for prospective applications (article number 2000713). Prof. Yuyan Liu provides an account of the recent progress on surface-wetting control and practical applications based on superwetting shape-memory microstructures (article number 2001718). In the field of flexible electronics, Prof. PingAn Hu gives a comprehensive review on atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride and its heterostructures for electronic and optoelectronic devices (article number 2000769). Prof. Yudong Huang highlights the importance of structure design and chemical modification of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrates for stretchable electronics (article number: 2003155). In the field of biomaterials/biomimetics, Prof. Shaoqin Liu summarizes recent advances in using various nanomaterials for facilitating microbial extracellular electron transfer processes occurring at both the bacteria–electrode interface and the biotic interface (article number 2004051). Prof. Qiang He and Prof. Xing Ma outline the recent progress of biomedical micro-/nanomotors toward overcoming biological barriers and in vivo imaging (article number 2000512). Prof. Xiaojun Han provides a comprehensive review on functional artificial cells/tissues based on versatile phospholipid assemblies (article number 2002635). Prof. Yao Li gives a comprehensive review on bioinspired microstructured materials for optical and thermal regulation (article number 2000697). In this issue, we introduce the multidisciplinary research activities at HIT; although the issue cannot cover all the materials research at HIT. We sincerely hope that this Special Issue will inspire readers to pay close attention to discover more research breakthroughs at HIT beyond this publication, and will stimulate more exciting collaborations. Shaoqin Liu received her Bachelor's degree from Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering in 1994 and her Ph.D degree from Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry (Chinese Academy of Science) in 1999. She started her chemistry research career in Professor Shaojun Dong's group at Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, developing polyoxometalate-based thin films. After her Ph.D degree, she moved to the Max-Planck-Institute of Colloids and Interface as a Humboldt Fellow where she developed polyoxometalate-based functional materials. In 2004, she joined the National Research Council of Canada as an NESRC fellow to study direct methanol fuel cells. In 2007, she started her academic career as a Full Professor in Harbin Institute of Technology. Her current research interests include preparation of nanostructured materials and their applications in energy, biosensing, and cancer therapy. Bin Guo has been a full professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) from 2001. He is currently the vice present of HIT and the director of the Key Laboratory of Microsystems and Microstructured Manufacturing of Ministry of Education, China. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from HIT in 1983, 1985, and 1991, respectively. He was a senior visiting scholar at Chiba Institute of Technology from 1993 to 1998. His current interests focus on innovative micro-/nanomanufacturing processes and systems, particularly in the areas of deformation-based processes and laser processes. Yu Zhou has been engaged in the area of ceramics and ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) for 35 years, mainly focusing on the development of multifunctional thermal ceramics and near-net forming technologies for special-shaped or large-sized ceramic components. He has been the President of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) since 2014. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from HIT in 1982, 1984, and 1989, respectively.
