Abstract:Macdonald Critchley, a world renowned neurologist, is best remembered as the person who challenged to solve the mystery and enigma of higher cerebral functions. He was the author of over 200 published articles and 20 books on neurology including his pioneer work on developmental dyslexia, the parietal lobe, cerebral hemisphere dominance and aphasiology. He also published articles on migraine, epilepsy, dementia, visual perseveration, anterior cerebral artery syndromes, indifference to pain, sleep disorders, movement disorders, and myotonia. He was very erudite and talented in linguistics; his interests were broad and eclectic. He wrote extensively on non-medical topics, such as plays, horror stories, mythology, and biographies of distinguished neuroscientists, philosophers or artists. His articles were written in the elegant prose style with thorough reference citations and extensive reviews of the literature worldwide. He was born in Bristol in 1900. From an early age, he was fascinated with the functioning brain and retained a life-long interest in languages. He was appointed to the Consultant staff of the National Hospital, Queen Square, and to King's College Hospital at the age of 27, and was elected to become FRCP at 30. He was Dean of the Institute of Neurology from 1948 to 1953. When I was studying advanced neurology at Queen Square in 1960-1961, I was fascinated by his outstanding lectures on Huntington's Disease and Non-verbal Communication. Although he did not read the manuscripts and used only a few slides for illustrations in his lectures, he could describe the details of historical accounts and relevant figures. He was an altruistic, instructive teacher with keen attention to responses from the audience. His clinical demonstrations, teaching rounds and tutorials were hugely popular among postgraduate students from all over the world. He emphasized the importance of shrewd observation and careful history taking in neurological practice. Macdonald Critchley was President of the World Federation of Neurology (1965-1973) and Editor of Journal of the Neurological Sciences. I met him at the 2nd Asian and Oceanian Congress of Neurology held in Melbourne in 1967. He was interested to know more about aphasia and dyslexia among people speaking and reading Chinese. He kindly invited me to speak on 'Linguistic Implications of Chinese Characters' at the meeting of the Research Group on Developmental Dyslexia in Dallas. Critchley's prominent achievements in teaching, writings and research on neurology derived from his creative thinking, powers of shrewd observation, wide knowledge of literature, and indefatigable assiduity in scientific pursuits. He died peacefully at home at the age of 97 and entered the pantheon of distinguished neuroscientists of the 20th century.

Abstract:In this article we reflect on the life and work of Andrew Fry, a renowned molecular cell biologist and a cherished member of the scientific community at the University of Leicester, UK, who passed away on 30th April 2024 at the age of 57. His groundbreaking work on the cellular mechanisms of Never in Mitosis gene-A related kinases (Neks) made an indelible mark on the field. Alongside his scientific achievements, Andrew was an exceptional mentor, a thoughtful academic leader and a dependable collaborator. Garth J. Thomas, Physiological Psychologist: An Appraisal of His Contributions to Memory Research

Abstract:This note is a tribute to Garth J. Thomas (1916-2008), late Professor of Brain Research at the University of Rochester, New York. Thomas was an influential psychologist, albeit for his research in learning and memory, as much as for his work as editor of the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology. In his studies, he combined experimental lesions with behavioral analyses. He introduced the terms "dispositional" and "representational" to describe the 2 different types of memory function, and emphasized that memory must be studied not only through behavioristic psychology, but also in a molecular and physiological context. Through his experimentation in rodents, Thomas concluded that distinct neural mechanisms underpin dispositional and representational memory. Prompted by Thomas' remarks on the future evolution of research techniques, we touch upon some ideas on the engram and the glial theory in a modern perspective.

Abstract:Electrophysiological studies in animals may provide a great insight into developing brain-like models of spatial cognition for robots. These studies suggest that the spatial ability of animals requires proper functioning of the hippocampus and the entorhinal cortex (EC). The involvement of the hippocampus in spatial cognition has been extensively studied, both in animal as well as in theoretical studies, such as in the brain-based models by Edelman and colleagues. In this work, we extend these earlier models, with a particular focus on the spatial coding properties of the EC and how it functions as an interface between the hippocampus and the neocortex, as proposed by previous work. By realizing the cognitive memory and mapping functions of the hippocampus and the EC, respectively, we develop a neurobiologically-inspired system to enable a mobile robot to perform task-based navigation in a maze environment.

Empirical Studies of the Arts

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Paul Locher passed away on 20 August 2024. Paul was an outstanding scientist and a central figure in the field of empirical aesthetics. He made important contributions to numerous areas including the study of symmetry, balance, facial attractiveness, museum behaviour, artwork composition and restoration, and aesthetics of food, but in particular to the study of eye movements in aesthetic appreciation of artworks. Indeed, his research on eye tracking is a touchstone for visual perception in empirical aesthetics. Here, a group of Paul's colleagues remember and celebrate him through a set of recollections that honour how he shaped their research and lives. It is hoped that this will offer a glimpse into the wonderful scholar and human being that Paul was, and why he will be sorely missed.

Abstract:This is a tribute to Arne Schousboe who made many notable contributions to the field of neurochemistry. Arne was interested in a wide range of topics and collaborated with a large network of experts in fields ranging from glutamatergic excitotoxicity, GABA receptor studies, brain energy metabolism, and epilepsy. Arne was known for his keen intellect and his warm and engaging personality. His death on February 27, 2024, after a short illness, leaves his family and colleagues in great sadness. The photo shows Arne and Inger Schousboe at Jasper National Park on one of their many travels around the world. This is a tribute to Arne Schousboe, Professor Emeritus at the University of Copenhagen, an eminent neurochemist and neuroscientist who was a leader in the fields of GABA, glutamate, and brain energy metabolism. Arne was known for his keen intellect, his wide‐ranging expertise in neurochemistry and neuropharmacology of GABA and glutamate and brain energy metabolism. Arne was also known for his strong leadership, his warm and engaging personality and his enjoyment of fine wine and great food shared with friends, family, and colleagues. Sadly, Arne passed away on February 27, 2024, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Inger Schousboe, his two children, and three wonderful grandchildren. His death is a tremendous loss to the neuroscience community. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and colleagues. Some of the highlights of Arne's career are described in this tribute.

Abstract:Larry Young, the self-described "guy who spends his days thinking about love and bonding in terms of biochemical reactions in localized circuits of the brain" (The Chemistry Between Us1), passed away, too early, in March 2024. He was a brilliant scientist who used prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) and other rodents to pioneer a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which the neuropeptides oxytocin and vasopressin act in the mammalian brain to mediate affiliative behaviors. He was also so much more—to his family, his field, his trainees and colleagues, and the larger world with whom he so skillfully communicated his complex studies that have illuminated how the social brain works.

Abstract:Vivien Chevaleyre was a gifted neuroscientist and electrophysiologist who delighted to follow the less-taken road. We lost him to lung cancer on January 10th, 2024, four days before his 51st birthday. Although his career was cut short, he made a wide range of pioneering discoveries in the fields of synaptic plasticity and hippocampal function. Vivien was an extraordinarily creative neuroscientist who loved the challenge of performing difficult and rigorous experiments that so often led to transformative results.

Abstract:The human nervous system maintains dominion over everything experienced in life, consolidating a constant barrage of stimuli and chemical fluctuation into memory, sense, emotion, and even character. Despite decades of productive investigation, comprehension of the nervous system's function and structure remain shrouded in mystery. Historically, the burden of elucidating these mysteries has fallen to neuroscientists bold enough to seek answers to this most nebulous vista. The legacy of one such neuroscientist, Jerzy Edwin Rose, endures today as a pillar of neuroscientific discovery. In the nascence of his career, Rose explored volumetric comparisons of human brain structure to that of other mammals, leading to the development of novel methods in neurophysiologic measurement and explanation. Rose would later segue mid-career into studies on the cooperation between the auditory cortex and thalamus, resulting in increased understanding of its functioning, structure, and anatomy. During the final saga of his long, fruitful career, Rose explored the electrophysiology of the auditory system, leading to novel methods using modern technology. Ultimately, the vast breadth of Rose's contributions to neuroscience has diminished the field's mystery, setting forth momentous groundwork for future discovery, and the inspiration to carry on in the spirit of his bold curiosity.

Abstract:On Saturday 26 September, around 4am, John Barrow died aged 67, with his wife Elizabeth and son Roger at his side. From a scientific perspective, it is hard to conceive a more premature end. During lockdown alone, whilst undergoing chemotherapy and in the full knowledge that his cancer was inoperable, John managed to co-author 11 scientific papers and write a new book ("One Plus One"). Even by his own standards of productivity, this is staggeringly impressive, an achievement he was openly proud of. From a broader perspective, with a wife, 3 children and 5 young grandchildren, many strong friendships, and so much more to offer the world, he departed far too soon.

Abstract:The famous amnesic patient Henry Molaison (H.M.) died on December 2, 2008. After extensive in situ magnetic resonance imaging in Boston, his brain was removed at autopsy and transported to the University of California San Diego. There the brain was prepared for frozen sectioning and cut into 2401, 70 μm coronal slices. While preliminary analyses of the brain sections have been reported, a comprehensive microscopic neuroanatomical analysis of the state of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death has not yet been published. The brain tissue and slides were subsequently moved to the University of California Davis and the slides digitized at high resolution. Initial stages of producing a website for the public viewing of the images were also carried out. Recently, the slides, digital images, and tissue have been transferred to Boston University for permanent archiving. A new steering committee has been established and plans are in place for completion of a freely accessible H.M. website. Research publications on the microscopic anatomy and neuropathology of H.M.'s brain at the time of his death are also planned. We write this commentary to provide the hippocampus and memory neuroscience communities with a brief summary of what has transpired following H.M.'s death and outline plans for future publications and a tissue archive.
