Abstract:Professor Vianney de Jong passed away in Willemstad, Curaçao, at 86 years of age. He was born in Maastricht, The Netherlands, on March 13, 1937, as the eldest of nine children. It was no surprise that he went to medical school. His father was a well-known neurologist in a community hospital in the southern part of The Netherlands, who also conducted groundbreaking research on hereditary neuropathies. Vianney de Jong completed his neurological training at the Department of Neurology of the Wilhelmina Gasthuis (WG) in Amsterdam, which was chaired by Professor Biemond. In 1967 he completed his PhD on cervical nystagmus, which was awarded with distinction. He worked as a neurologist and researcher at the Academic Hospital, affiliated with the University of Amsterdam, throughout his career. Together with Biemond's successor, Professor Den Hartog Jager, he developed an animal research program to unravel the pathogenesis of motor neurone disease (MND), aimed to find a therapy for people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In 1980, De Jong became Professor of Experimental Neurology. His animal model revealed a role for free radicals in the development and progression of MND. This insight formed the basis of a double-blind controlled trial with the free radical scavenger acetylcysteine on patients with ALS. De Jong and his PhD student Liesbeth Louwerse not only followed the patients diligently, they also supported and guided them throughout the trial. De Jong was always available for his patients who he examined meticulously. In the weekends he often paid home visits to patients who were no longer able to attend the follow-up visits in the hospital and did everything he could to support and comfort them. He jokingly told his colleagues that at that time he had to watch his weight, because of the many pastries he was offered during those visits. The patients and their loved ones were fond of him. Unfortunately, the trial did not show a significant improvement of 12-month survival or reduction in disease progression. Nevertheless, this trial was the beginning of a successful clinical research program. Together with Dirk Troost, one of his former PhD students, De Jong examined the role of inflammation in the spinal cords and brains of patients who died from ALS. With Frank Baas he conducted genetic studies in large families, which were painstakingly examined and documented. His scientific research has been awarded several times. In 2002 he received the Forbes Norris Award for his distinctive scientific contributions in the field of ALS. Vianney de Jong was a colorful character, an avid reader and a gifted pianist. He had a good sense of humor and was very entertaining. At an ALS fundraising dinner he was seated next to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, at that time patron of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Rumor has it that a few years later at another dinner party, the Duchess demanded that Vianney de Jong again would be seated next to her. After his retirement De Jong was decorated with a high Royal honor ('Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau'). For many years he continued to support the ALS research program in the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam. His successors greatly benefited from the extensive database with data from hundreds of patients, dutifully documented by him and his devoted research nurse, Cox Schouten. Throughout his life Vianney de Jong struggled with physical ailments. This was one of the reasons why he decided to exchange Amsterdam for the island of Curaçao, where he lived with very good friends and their children. His health condition improved noticeably, and he spent some happy final years under the Caribbean sun.
