Abstract:This note is a tribute to Garth J. Thomas (1916-2008), late Professor of Brain Research at the University of Rochester, New York. Thomas was an influential psychologist, albeit for his research in learning and memory, as much as for his work as editor of the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology. In his studies, he combined experimental lesions with behavioral analyses. He introduced the terms "dispositional" and "representational" to describe the 2 different types of memory function, and emphasized that memory must be studied not only through behavioristic psychology, but also in a molecular and physiological context. Through his experimentation in rodents, Thomas concluded that distinct neural mechanisms underpin dispositional and representational memory. Prompted by Thomas' remarks on the future evolution of research techniques, we touch upon some ideas on the engram and the glial theory in a modern perspective.

Abstract:Angelos Katakouzenos, a Greek neurologist and prolific medical writer at the beginning of the 20th century, belonged to a group of artists and scholars that formed the "generation of the 30s," a cultural movement that emerged after World War I and introduced modernism in Greek art and literature. Born in 1902, Katakouzenos studied medicine in France at the Universities of Montpellier and Paris, where he trained in neurology and -psychiatry under Georges Guillain, Henri Claude, Jean-Athanase Sicard, Pierre Marie, Clovis Vincent and Théophile -Alajouanine. In Paris, he attended to Freud's patients, collaborating with the psychoanalyst Marie Bonaparte, while he was introduced to the contemporary avant-garde movements of this time, developing long-lasting friendships with artists and intellectuals, including Marc Chagall and Tériade. Although Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of -Paris, Commandeur of the Légion d'honneur and founder of the first neuropsychiatric clinics in Greece, Katakouzenos lived far from the limelight. Despite his numerous publications, his scientific work remained largely unacknowledged. Yet, as a -psychoanalyst he gained international fame and treated patients including William Faulkner who later would write, "To the wise scientist, the in-depth judge of the human soul, my friend Dr. Katakouzenos, who has helped me like no one else to redeem myself from the tortuous questions that troubled me for years - from the depths of my heart, many, very many thanks". In this paper, the rediscovery of Katakouzenos's remarkable work in the field of neuroscience aims to tell the story of a great physician whose lifework in bridging art and science may, in retrospect, reinstate him as one of the most captivating neurologists of the 20th century.

Abstract:In this article we reflect on the enduring and pervasive influence of Walter Kintsch. His theories and empirical research formed the bedrock of decades of national and international research on text and discourse processing, as well as cognitive science more broadly. His orientation was interdisciplinary, drawing on and contributing to the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive science, text linguistics, computational modeling, and education sciences. He mentored dozens of students and colleagues who collaborated with him on research over his 60-year career. He was always interested in new ideas and not afraid to cast aside old ideas that were misleading or that had outlived their relevance and utility. This article highlights Walter's legacy contributions woven in with personal stories that exemplify some of the qualities that made Walter a legend in the field.

Abstract:Roger Kirk, renowned for his many contributions to psychological research methods, passed away on December 30, 2023, in Waco, Texas, at the age of 93. Born in Indiana on February 23, 1930, Roger spent most of his childhood in Kentucky and Ohio. He developed an interest in the trombone as a teenager, so planned a musical career when he enrolled at The Ohio State University. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees in music, however, he came to realize he was "just an average trombone player." Some vocational guidance led him to Ohio State's experimental psychology doctoral program, which he started in 1952. Roger summed up his substantial career change as follows: "God gives all of us talents, it just took me longer than most people to find mine." Roger's doctoral research focused on psychoacoustics, so after completing his dissertation in 1955, he took a job as a psychoacoustical engineer at the Baldwin Piano and Organ Company. Roger was an accomplished author and received a multitude of accolades during his career; including Baylor's highest teaching designation (Master Teacher, 1993) and highest scholarship designation (Distinguished Professor, 1995). Abstract:This is a tribute to Arne Schousboe who made many notable contributions to the field of neurochemistry. Arne was interested in a wide range of topics and collaborated with a large network of experts in fields ranging from glutamatergic excitotoxicity, GABA receptor studies, brain energy metabolism, and epilepsy. Arne was known for his keen intellect and his warm and engaging personality. His death on February 27, 2024, after a short illness, leaves his family and colleagues in great sadness. The photo shows Arne and Inger Schousboe at Jasper National Park on one of their many travels around the world. This is a tribute to Arne Schousboe, Professor Emeritus at the University of Copenhagen, an eminent neurochemist and neuroscientist who was a leader in the fields of GABA, glutamate, and brain energy metabolism. Arne was known for his keen intellect, his wide‐ranging expertise in neurochemistry and neuropharmacology of GABA and glutamate and brain energy metabolism. Arne was also known for his strong leadership, his warm and engaging personality and his enjoyment of fine wine and great food shared with friends, family, and colleagues. Sadly, Arne passed away on February 27, 2024, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Inger Schousboe, his two children, and three wonderful grandchildren. His death is a tremendous loss to the neuroscience community. He will be greatly missed by his friends, family, and colleagues. Some of the highlights of Arne's career are described in this tribute.

Abstract:The human nervous system maintains dominion over everything experienced in life, consolidating a constant barrage of stimuli and chemical fluctuation into memory, sense, emotion, and even character. Despite decades of productive investigation, comprehension of the nervous system's function and structure remain shrouded in mystery. Historically, the burden of elucidating these mysteries has fallen to neuroscientists bold enough to seek answers to this most nebulous vista. The legacy of one such neuroscientist, Jerzy Edwin Rose, endures today as a pillar of neuroscientific discovery. In the nascence of his career, Rose explored volumetric comparisons of human brain structure to that of other mammals, leading to the development of novel methods in neurophysiologic measurement and explanation. Rose would later segue mid-career into studies on the cooperation between the auditory cortex and thalamus, resulting in increased understanding of its functioning, structure, and anatomy. During the final saga of his long, fruitful career, Rose explored the electrophysiology of the auditory system, leading to novel methods using modern technology. Ultimately, the vast breadth of Rose's contributions to neuroscience has diminished the field's mystery, setting forth momentous groundwork for future discovery, and the inspiration to carry on in the spirit of his bold curiosity.
Henry Ware Cattell and Walt Whitman's Brain

Abstract:Henry Ware Cattell was a prominent pathologist and medical editor in late 19th and early 20th century America. Strangely, his name is unknown to most medical historians but is more widely known by aficionados of Walt Whitman's poetry. In 1892, Cattell was involved in an incident that abruptly changed his life and decreased his commitment to pathology as a career. Cattell had been serving as the pathologist/prosector for the American Anthropometric Society at the time the poet Walt Whitman died. Cattell, the pathologist for the University of Pennsylvania's Wistar Institute, performed Whitman's autopsy on March 27, 1892; Whitman's brain was removed and was to join those of other prominent American intellectuals who had donated their brains to the Society's "Brain Club," but something went horribly wrong (allegedly, an assistant had dropped the brain and destroyed it) and Cattell kept this a secret. Full of self-doubt, Cattell was anguished about his inadequacies as a pathologist and was extremely worried about how all of this would affect his career when discovered. While still continuing to practice hospital-based pathology, he began to transition into an author and editor. This essay will provide a detailed biographical sketch of Henry Ware Cattell, address his sibling rivalry with his more famous brother James McKeen Cattell, briefly discuss the fad of 19th century intellectuals embracing the pseudo-science of phrenology and their participation in anatomical "brain clubs," and, finally, address the mystery of what happened to Walt Whitman's brain. We lost him to lung cancer on January 10th, 2024, four days before his 51st birthday. Although his career was cut short, he made a wide range of pioneering discoveries in the fields of synaptic plasticity and hippocampal function. Vivien was an extraordinarily creative neuroscientist who loved the challenge of performing difficult and rigorous experiments that so often led to transformative results.
