Abstract:Micro-sized uniform square two-dimensional single crystalline ZnS thin nanosheets were prepared on a large scale. The ZnS thin nanosheets were grown via a simple solvothermal method using Zn(Ac)2 powder and SC(NH2)2 as the original reactant and ethylenediamine(en) as the solvent. The room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurement reveals that the as-prepared ZnS nanosheets have visible emission of 518.2nm within the range of green. XRD, TEM, HRTEM and TGA analysis were also carried out to characterize the product. The square single-crystal ZnS nanosheets with visible emission within the range of green may have great potential applications in nanodevices.

Abstract:ZnS nanoparticles and one-dimensional nanocrystals were obtained by in-situ synthesis in Aa-AMPS-hT ternary periodic copolymer by ion complexometry and self-assembly method. The micro-morphology, structure and optical properties were characterized by TEM, SED, UV-vis spectra and PL spectra. The results show that the products are hexagonal ZnS nanocrystals with 15 nm-215 nm in diameter. The morphology and dimension of ZnS nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the sulfaration time. The UV-vis absorption spectra indicate that the absorption edges are blue-shifted by shortening the sulfuration time, exhibiting a marked quantum size effect. With shortening sulfuration time, the photoluminescence emission peak of 409.8 nm is blue-shifted, which could be ascribed to be the forbidden gap emission.

Abstract:Uniform near-spherical SnS nanoparticles were prepared by a hydrazine hydrate-assisted diethylene glycol solution synthesis based on the reaction of tin dichloride (SnCl2 center dot 2H2O) with thioacetamide (H3CCSNH2). The as-prepared SnS nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, FETEM, EDS, XPS and UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer. The results showed that the SnS nanoparticles had orthorhombic crystal structure, good stoichiometry and indirect bandgap of similar to 1.1 eV. Abstract:A simple hydrothermal process is proposed for synthesizing SnO2 quantum dots (QDs), in which hydrazine hydrate is used as the mineralizer instead of NaOH. X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV - vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were employed to characterize the product. The HRTEM image shows that the diameters of the SnO2 nanoparticles fall into a small range of 2.3 - 3.1 nm, with the majority being less than the exciton Bohr radius of SnO2 (similar to 2.7 nm). Analysis of the DRS spectrum showed the band gap of the SnO2 QDs to be 3.88 eV, exhibiting a 0.28 eV blue shift from that of the bulk SnO2 (3.6 eV). The mechanism for hydrothermal synthesis of the SnO2 QDs using hydrazine hydrate as the mineralizer is discussed.

Abstract:Here we report the colloidal synthesis of size-tunable SnS nanocrystals that have an unusual metastable cubic zinc-blende phase instead of the more stable layered orthorhombic phase. The single-crystalline zinc-blende SnS nanocrystals with sizes of 8 nm, 60 nm, and 700 nm were achieved by injecting the sulfur-oleylamine precursor into tin-oleylamine solution in the presence of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) at different temperatures. The morphology and structure of the SnS nanocrystals were studied by high-resolution electron microscopy techniques. The small SnS nanoparticles (similar to 8 nm and similar to 60 nm) are nearly spherical and have the polyhedral shape. The large (similar to 700 nm) crystals display a unique crystal morphology that have T(d) symmetry with a truncated tetrahedron configuration, and the four truncated surfaces each outgrow to form a convex triangular pyramid corner. Careful structural analysis revealed that each of the crystal is enclosed by 4 low-index {111} hexangular facets and 12 high-index {220} triangular facets using a lift-out technique with a focused ion beam (FIB) and followed by high resolution electron microscope imaging. The direct band gaps of the different sized SnS nanocrystals range from 1.63 eV to 1.68 eV. These heavy-metal-free and low cost nanocrystals are highly efficient absorptive materials in the whole UV-visible range, suitable for applications in photovoltaic cells.

Abstract:SnO2 quantum dots (QDs) and ultrathin nanowires (NWs) with diameters of approximately 0.5-2.5 and approximately 1.5-4.5 nm, respectively, were controllably synthesized in a simple solution system. They are supposed to be ideal models for studying the continuous evolution of the quantum-confinement effect in SnO2 1D --> 0D systems. The observed transition from strong to weak quantum confinement in SnO2 QDs and ultrathin NWs is interpreted through the use of the Brus effective-mass approximation and the Nosaka finite-depth well model. Photoluminescence properties that were coinfluenced by size effects, defects (oxygen vacancies), and surface capping are discussed in detail. With the SnO2 QDs as building blocks, various 2D porous structures with ordered hexagonal, distorted hexagonal, and square patterns were prepared on silicon-wafer surfaces and exhibited optical features of 2D photonic crystals and enhanced gas sensitivity.

Abstract:Novel tin (II) sulfide (SnS) nanoflowers were successfully synthesized via a simple thioglycollic acid (TGA)-assisted hydrothermal process at 250 °C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectrometry were employed to characterize the structure, morphology and chemical composition of the product, the results of which reveal that the product is composed of well crystallized orthorhombic SnS nanoflowers. The band gaps were obtained by analyzing UV-vis absorption spectrum; herein, the direct and indirect optical band gaps are 1.53 and 1.43 eV, respectively. Furthermore, we discussed critical factors (e.g., TGA, SnCl2/Na2S mol ratio of the reactants, hydrothermal temperature, and sulfur source) for hydrothermal formation of the SnS nanoflowers.

Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Monodisperse CdSe quantum dots were synthesized by TOPO assisted reaction in nonaqueous solution.The samples were characterized using transmission electron microscopy,X-ray powder diffraction,size distribution histograms,UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra.The results indicate that the monodisperse quantum dots exhibit zinc blende(cubic)diffraction patterns and high PL quantum yield.Moreover,the mechanism of formation of zinc blende structure was preliminarily discussed.
Surface plasmon resonance induced enhancement of photoluminescence and Raman line intensity in SnS quantum dot-Sn nanoparticle hybrid structure

Abstract:In this article, we report on enhancement in photoluminescence and Raman line intensity of SnS quantum dots embedded in a mesh of Sn nanostructures. SnS nanoparticles synthesized by homogenous precipitation method show strong quantum confinement with a band gap of ∼2.7 eV (blue shift of ∼1 eV compared to bulk SnS particles). The optical band gap of SnS quantum dots is controlled by varying the pH (∼0 to 2.25), ageing time (24 to 144 h) and molarity (0 to 2 M) of the precursors. These SnS nanoparticles are embedded in a mesh of Sn nanostructures which are synthesized from tin chloride by using sodium borohydride as reducing agent. The Sn nanostructures have a morphology dependent, tunable surface plasmon resonance (SPR), ranging from UV (∼295 nm) to visible region (∼400 nm) of the electromagnetic spectrum. In the SnS-Sn nanohybrids, the excitons are strongly coupled with plasmons leading to a shift in the excitonic binding energy (∼400 meV). The pure SnS quantum dots have a very weak photoluminescence peak at ∼560 nm and Raman shift of low intensity at 853.08 cm-1, 1078.17 cm-1, 1255.60 cm-1, 1466.91 cm-1. The coupling of SnS nanoparticles with Sn nanoparticles results in strong exciton-plasmon interactions leading to enhanced photoluminescence and Raman line intensity. The nanohybrids formed using Sn nanosheets whose SPR matches with absorption onset of the SnS nanoparticles shows an enhancement of ∼104 times higher than pure SnS nanoparticles. Thus, Sn nanosheet with surface plasmon resonance in visible region (400 nm) like Au and Ag is a promising material for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, plasmon assisted fluorescence imaging and for enhancing the emission intensity of semiconductors with weak emission intensity.

Abstract:Novel aloe-like tin bisulfide (SnS 2 ) nanostructures were successfully synthesized via a thioglycolic acid (TGA) assisted hydrothermal process. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to characterize the product. XRD pattern reveals that the product is well-crystallized SnS 2 with hexagonal structure. TEM and FESEM images clearly show an aloe-like nanostructure that is made from several single crystalline leaves. Furthermore, the possible growth mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:In this work, highly stable, soluble and luminescent CdS quantum dots (QDots) with a narrow size distribution were synthesized in ethylene glycol using the polyol process and the solvothermal technique. In this case instead of using a conventional highly toxic sulfur source like H2S, we use elemental sulfur dissolved in ethylene glycol to perform the reaction. When the solvent reaches its boiling point inside the autoclave, sulfur is reduced to S−2 and reacts with Cd+2 ions to form CdS nanocrystals. Analysis of the spectroscopic and TEM measurements showed that 3nm monodispersed CdS QDots were synthesized and exhibited high photoluminescence (PL) in the blue green region of the spectra when excited with 355nm.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of tin disulfide have been successfully prepared by the solvent–thermal synthesis method using different precursors. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the products were hexagonal SnS2 phase and transmission electron microscope images displayed that the samples were laminar particles with the average size of about 150nm. The Raman spectra showed a sharp peak at 311cm−1, which is characteristic of SnS2. The IR spectra determined the absence of tin oxides. In addition, the possible routes of the reactions were discussed.

Abstract:Nanoparticle Zn2xCu1–xIn1–xS2 is a promising and safer alternative to lead- and cadmium-containing quantum dots. Students prepare Zn0.44Cu0.78In0.78S2 quantum dots in a one-pot synthesis without an inert atmosphere and investigate how the color, visible absorption band edge, and photoluminescence peak wavelength depend on the size of the particle. Octadecene is used as a noncoordinating solvent with a high boiling point. Oleic acid and stearic acid are used as ligands to dissolve the metal salts in the solvent at ∼150 °C. Dodecanethiolate coordinates to the metal ion, and above 200 °C, the metal thiolate decomposes to produce metal sulfide nanoparticles, coated in dodecanethiolate. Samples are withdrawn from the hot solution and quenched at room temperature to produce a series of increasing nanoparticle sizes with the same chemical composition.

Abstract:The monodisperse ZnS nanospheres were synthesized by a solvothermal method. The nanospheres were characterized using XRD, TEM, UV-vis, and photoluminescence spectra. The results demonstrate that ZnS nanospheres are highly crystalline. The strong photoluminescence emission at 450 nm (blue) can be observed in the ZnS nanospheres.

Abstract:Stoichiometric, phase-controllable SnS nanocrystals (NCs) were prepared by a solution chemical synthesis using triethanolamine-assisted diethylene glycol solvent, tin(II) chloride and thioacetamide as precursors at injection temperature of 180-220 °C. The influences of triethanolamine adding amounts, injection temperature, refluxing time on crystal phase, growth morphology and optical property of the synthesized SnS NCs were investigated. The results showed that both orthorhombic (OR) and zinc-blende (ZB) phase of SnS NCs could be formed by altering triethanolamine amounts. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Our study reports the ultrasound-assisted synthesis of SnS and SnS 2 in the form of nanoparticles using aqueous solutions of respective tin chloride and thioacetamide varying sonication time. The presence of both compounds is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, as well as Raman and FT-IR spectroscopic techniques. The existence of nanoparticles is proven by powder X-ray diffraction investigation and by high resolution transmission electron microscopy observations. The size of nanocrystallites are in the range of 3–8 nm and 30 50 nm for SnS, and 1.5–10 nm for SnS 2 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, used to investigate the chemical state of tin and sulphur atoms on the surface of nanoparticles, reveal that they are typically covered with tin on the same oxidation degree as respective bulk compound. Values of optical bandgaps of synthesized nanoparticles, according to the Tauc method, were 2.31, 1.47 and 1.05 eV for SnS (60, 90 and 120 min long synthesis, respectively), and 2.81, 2.78 and 2.70 eV for SnS 2 (60, 90 and 120 min long synthesis, respectively). Obtained nanoparticles were utilized as photo- and sonocatalysts in the process of degradation of model azo-dye molecules by UV-C light or ultrasound. Quantum dots of SnS 2 obtained under sonication lasting 120 min were the best photocatalyst (66.9 % color removal), while quantum dots of SnS obtained under similar sonication time were the best sonocatalyst (85.2 % color removal).

Abstract:Quantum dot devices have been viewed as one of solutions for the next step in the development of integrated circuit. Two-dimensional (2D) layered semiconductors such as tin sulfide (SnS) and tin disulfide (SnS2) are promising materials for fabricating quantum dots (QDs) devices. However, the challenges in the synthesis of QDs with pure phases severely limit applications in such fields. In this work, uniform SnS and SnS2 QDs were synthesized via a convenient and facile ultrasonic method. TEM and AFM images confirmed the morphology of the SnS and SnS2 QDs. The optical characteristics of the QDs were obtained via UV–vis absorption and Raman spectroscopy. Finally, volt-current measurements of devices fabricated using the SnS and SnS2 QDs were carried out. Our results demonstrate the potential of SnS and SnS2 QDs for optical and electronic applications.
