Abstract:High repetition rate fiber lasers have attracted great attention in recent years due to their potential applications including spectroscopy and laser processing. In this manuscript, we have demon-strated sub-30 fs pulses directly from a compact Er-doped fiber laser amplifier system with a high repetition rate of ∼203 MHz. The design of the laser comprises of a home-built oscillator based on nonlinear polarization evolution mode-locking mechanism, an all-fiber amplifier, and a fiber type compressor. By optimizing the length of single mode fiber compressor, the shortest pulse duration of 26 fs is achieved, which is ∼4.9 optical cycle at 1570 nm. The average output power of the de-chirped pulse is 267 mW with corresponding pulse energy of 1.3 nJ. Such a high repetition rate fiber laser with few-cycle pulse holds tremendous potential for numerous applications that require high temporal resolution, and high photon flux.

Abstract:We report the generation of tunable high-repetition-rate (0.1-1 THz) femtosecond pulses based on a quasi-continuous wave (CW) dual-pumped all-fiber cascaded four-wave-mixing (FWM) scheme without requiring a cavity resonator. By synchronously injecting two pulse-modulated lasers into an 85-m-long dispersion-flat highly nonlinear fiber, cascaded FWM processes under only ~30-mW average pump power are efficiently initiated to form the Kerr frequency combs near 1.56 μm. Phase locking of the Kerr combs is confirmed by real-time measurements using an autocorrelator, and stable ultrashort pulse trains are observed. The pulse repetition rate can be tuned continuously in the range of 0.1~1 THz by controlling the wavelength spacing between the two pump lasers. The pulse duration can be correspondingly adjusted from 1.66 ps to 262 fs. Such quasi-CW dual-pumped all-fiber cascaded-FWM frequency combs with the advantages of compactness and flexibility could provide a practical solution for generating ultrahigh-repetition-rate femtosecond pulses.

Abstract:Multi-gigahertz fundamental repetition rate, tunable repetition rate and wavelength, ultrafast fiber lasers at wavelengths of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 µm are experimentally demonstrated and summarized. At the wavelength of 1.0 µm, the laser wavelength is tuned in the range of 1040.1-1042.9 nm and the repetition rate is shifted by 226 kHz in a 3-cm-long all-fiber laser by controlling the temperature of the resonator. Compared with a previous work where the maximum average power was 0.8 mW, the power in this study is significantly improved to 57 mW under a launched pump power of 213 mW, thus achieving an optical-to-optical efficiency of 27%. For comparison, a similar temperature-tuning technique is implemented in a Tm3+-doped ultrafast oscillator but, as expected, it results in a broader tunable range of 14.1 nm (1974.1-1988.2 nm) in wavelength as compared with the value of 1.8 nm for the wavelength of 1.0 µm. The repetition rate in the process is shifted by 294 kHz. For the high-frequency range from 100 kHz to 10 MHz, the value of integrated timing jitter gradually increases with an increase in temperature. Finally, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time, a new method for tuning wavelength and repetition rate is proposed and demonstrated for a femtosecond fiber laser at the wavelength of 1.5 µm. Through fine rotation of the alignment angle between the Er/Yb:glass fiber and a semiconductor saturable absorption mirror, the peak wavelength can be tuned in the range of 1591.4-1586.1 nm and the repetition rate is shifted by 60 kHz.

Abstract:Ultra-short optical pulse sources are key components in optical time-division multiplexing(OTDM) system. In this paper, a wavelength and repetition frequency tunable actively mode-locked fiber ring laser based on cross-gain modulation in a Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier(RSOA) is demonstrated. Theoretical model for this scheme is also established and output characteristics are calculated. Stable picosecond pulse trains at 10-80 GHz repetition frequency are obtained. 30nm wavelength tuning range is achieved in our proposed actively mode-locked laser.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact and efficient femtosecond laser operating at ~950 nm by directly frequency-doubling of a mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser. The laser is based on a highly compact architecture, with a dispersion-managed oscillator together with only one-step frequency conversion. The output pulse width is ~270 fs, with a repetition rate of 22.1 MHz and a pulse energy of 12.9 nJ. It is believed that the greatly simplified setup makes the current laser well suited for two-photon microscopy and other biomedical and clinical applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybridly mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser. It combines saturable absorption and nonlinear polarization evolution to produce stable and purified femtosecond pulses with a high repetition rate of 212 MHz. The average output power is larger than 65 mW, and the single-pulse energy is 0.31 nJ at a pump power of 750 mW. A wide spectrum with FWHM of 61.4 nm is obtained. The dechirped pulse duration is 41.9 fs, which is near the transform-limited range.

Abstract:Abstract Integrated femtosecond pulse and frequency comb sources are critical components for a wide range of applications, including optical atomic clocks, microwave photonics, spectroscopy, optical wave synthesis, frequency conversion, communications, lidar, optical computing8, and astronomy9. The leading approaches for on-chip pulse generation rely on mode locking inside microresonator with either third-order nonlinearity10 or with semiconductor gain. These approaches, however, are limited in noise performance, wavelength tunability and repetition rates. Alternatively, sub-picosecond pulses can be synthesized without mode-locking, by modulating a continuous-wave (CW) single-frequency laser using a cascade of electro-optic (EO) modulators. This method is particularly attractive due to its simplicity, robustness, and frequency-agility but has been realized only on a tabletop using multiple discrete EO modulators and requiring optical amplifiers (to overcome large insertion losses), microwave amplifiers, and phase shifters. Here we demonstrate a chip-scale femtosecond pulse source implemented on an integrated lithium niobate (LN) photonic platform, using cascaded low-loss electro-optic amplitude and phase modulators and chirped Bragg grating, forming a time-lens system. The device is driven by a CW distributed feedback (DFB) chip laser and controlled by a single CW microwave source without the need for any stabilization or locking. We measure femtosecond pulse trains (520 fs duration) with a 30-GHz repetition rate, flat-top optical spectra with a 10-dB optical bandwidth of 12.6 nm, individual comb-line powers above 0.1 milliwatt, and pulse energies of 0.54 picojoule. Our results represent a tunable, robust and low-cost integrated pulsed light source with CW-to-pulse conversion efficiencies an order of magnitude higher than achieved with previous integrated sources. Our pulse generator can find applications from ultrafast optical measurement to networks of distributed quantum computers.

Abstract:The experiment of the generation and amplification of femetosecond Ti:sapphire laser pulse at high repetition rate is reported. The laser pulses with minimum pulsewidth 15 fs, maximum spectrum width of 80 nm, average power of 200 mW are generated from a home-built self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. As a seed pulse which is selected from the oscillator, the laser pulse is further amplified by using chirped-pulse-amplification technology in a Ti:sapphire amplifier from which a kind of pulses with single-pulse-energy of 100 uj, pulsewidth after compressing of 50 fs at 5 kHz repetition rate are produced. The system design and experimental results are discussed.

Abstract:We report on a 312 fs all-fiber ring laser with a fundamental repetition rate of 409 MHz based on an Er3+/Yb3+ codoped phosphate glass fiber, which is only 5.0 cm in length. Such a high repetition rate femtosecond fiber laser is realized by combining an optical integrated module and a hybrid mode-locking method, where a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror ensures the self-starting mode-locking and a nonlinear polarization evolution technique provides a pulse shortening mechanism. With a transmission-type saturable absorber, the fundamental repetition rate of a hybrid mode-locking all-fiber ring laser is expected to be further scaled up with a much more compact cavity structure.

Abstract:We show both numerically and experimentally that through appropriately selecting the output coupling position and strength in a mode-locked fiber laser, one can effectively manage the nonlinearity of the cavity. By implementing the technique together with cavity dispersion management in an erbium-doped fiber laser, we have achieved stable mode-locked pulses with a single-pulse energy of 2.08 nJ and pulse width of 46.2 fs directly from the laser.

Abstract:High repetition rate pulsed fiber laser in 1μm is an attractive and novel source for optical transmission systems, since ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) has the potential to provide broad gain spectrum and high optical conversion efficiency in this regime. Previous works in this area have explored the wavelength range above 1050 nm. In this paper, we focus more on the shorter wavelength band which is closer to the peak of the emission cross section of YDF at around 1030 nm. A 10-GHz harmonically mode-locked all-fiber laser is demonstrated. A pulse train with a pulsewidth of around 13 ps and wavelength tunable from 1023.5 nm to 1053.3 nm is achieved. The side-mode suppression ratio is more than 50 dB without any stabilization techniques.

Abstract:A mode-locked laser using Nd,Y:SrF2 crystal as the gain medium is presented in this letter. By special design of the cavity for enhancing the self-phase modulation effect, femtosecond mode-locking with 97 fs pulse duration and 13.2 nm spectral width centered at 1061 nm is obtained at a repetition rate of 96 MHz. The average output power is 102 mW under 925 mW pump power, corresponding to the optical-to-optical efficiency of 11%. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first sub-100 fs pulses generated from a mode-locked Nd doped crystal laser.

Abstract:High-repetition-rate fiber laser has widely applications in the field of femtosecond frequency comb, ultra-fast optical sampling, and so on. In this paper, an Er-doped femtosecond fiber laser with a repetition rate of 303 MHz is demonstrated based on the mechanism of nonlinear polarization rotation. By means of optimization of cavity dispersion, the net dispersion in fiber cavity is a little negative nearby zero point. After mode locking, the laser is operating in the stretched-pulse regime. At a pump power of 817 mW, the output power of the laser is 125 mW in continue-wave state, and 69 mW in mode-locking state. The laser directly generates 90 fs before dispersion compensation. Mode locking can self-start at the pump power of 700-817 mW. Repetition rate drift of the mode-locked laser is 30 Hz in five hours.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an effective continuous-wave tunable operation and femtosecond passively mode-locked pulse from a Yb:CaF2-SrF2 mixed crystal laser for the first time. Pumped by a 977 nm fiber-coupled laser diode, a continuous-wave mode-locked pulse as short as 634 fs was generated. The shortest pulse operated under a repetition rate of 87 MHz at the central wavelength of 1047 nm. The calculated time-bandwidth product was 0.503, which was 1.6 times the Fourier transform-limited sech2-shaped pulses.

Abstract:.A simple robust self-seeded laser diode scheme for generating electrical wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses at a FY;ed repetition rate is presented. Wavelength tuning of transform-limited pulses with a pulsewidth of similar to 10ps and a sidemode suppression ratio of 15dB overall, and 28dB at best, was obtained among six cavity modes corresponding to a tuning range of 7.6nm. Very stable operation was observed at each wavelength because there was a relatively large locking range for each wavelength.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate direct generation of 51 nJ, 284-fs ultrashort pulses in an all-fiber cavity-optimized erbium-doped laser with a low repetition rate of 2.68 MHz. The conversion efficiency of the laser is about 10%. The laser is mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation. Such high energy and ultrashort duration benefits from using large output ratio (90%), elongating the cavity length, dispersion management, and bidirectional high-power pumping in the laser. Further decreasing the net dispersion of the laser by using a dispersion-compensated fiber can reduce the pulse duration to 160 fs. In addition, variation of spectral width due to an invisible filter in the laser is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultralong cavity, all-fiber, all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped fiber laser that is passively mode locked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Without any discrete dispersion-compensation components or conventional spectral filters, the SESAM works together with the strongly chirped pulse and the nonlinearity induced spectrum broadening to perform a filtering-equivalent function, thus stabilizing the mode locking. The laser generates 4.3 nJ stable mode-locked pulses with a 397 kHz fundamental repetition rate at a 1068 nm central wavelength.

Abstract:A compact all-fiber sub-nanosecond narrow-linewidth Yb-doped fiber amplifier with a controllable repetition rate has been investigated. Tunable temporal pulses ranging from sub-nanoseconds to 10 ns with repetition rates from 10 kHz to 1 MHz are obtained by controlling the waveform of the injected electrical-pulse signal. Due to the practical requirements of our intended applications, a distributed feedback semiconductor laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm, pulse duration of 802 ps, repetition rate of 500 kHz and average power of 20 μW is used to seed a dual-stage single mode Yb-doped fiber amplifier. The characteristics of the amplified pulses are measured and exhibit a temporal duration of 810 ps with an average power of 31.2 mW. The gain of the amplified pulse is about 32 dB at the maximum output power. A notable feature of the amplifier pulses is that the spectral linewidth can be maintained to less than 0.1 nm during the dual-stage amplifier process. The noise level lies more than 22 dB below the peak value of the amplified spectrum, which represents an excellent signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:We demonstrate an effective method to obtain high-repetition-rate femtosecond mid-infrared (mid-IR) pulses by nonlinear optical modulation of mid-IR continuous-wave (CW) quantum and interband cascade lasers (ICLs and QCLs). In the experiment, a high-repetition-rate femtosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser with nanojoule-level pulse energy was used as the pump source of optical parametric amplifiers to modulate and amplify the mid-IR CW laser. Near transform-limited 84 fs duration (7.3 cycles) mid-IR pulses were generated with above 200 mW average power and a repetition rate of 160 MHz. Moreover, the spectral tunability was demonstrated using CW QCL at different wavelengths. The scheme offered a simple method to produce high-repetition-rate ultrashort pulses and that can be flexibly adopted in other mid-IR regions.
