Abstract:This paper proposed a fluidic tunable lens with polymer membrane and multi-flow structure. The designed lens mainly consists of five optical layers including one polymer membrane, two solid layers and two liquid layers. A series of slime hexagonal holes are drilled in the solid layers and the lens holders, allowing the optical liquid flowing among the different layers. The integrated structure of the fluidic lens was presented, as well as the lens composition and fabrication process. The deformation process of the fluidic lens are measured and analyzed, and the optical property are simulated using Zemax software. Images captured through a prototype lens at various rotating angles presents almost identical patterns and the same image quality, showing good stability to gravity. The lens focal length can be adjusted flexibly from 32.3 mm to 14.3 mm under a tiny injection volume of 86.4 uL. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 3% and relative illumination is above 0.72. The fluidic tunable lens shows the potential to be used in various compact, low cost and stable optical systems.
Bioinspired solid–liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure

Abstract:A solid liquid mixed tunable lens with multilayered structure is proposed. The designed lens utilizes a solid-state elastic polymer, optical liquid, and glass as the optical medium, and adjusts the focus by changing the surface curvature of the elastic polymer. The integrated structure of the tunable lens is presented, as well as detailed descriptions of the lens materials, fabrication, and assembling process. Images captured through the tunable lens under different displacement loads are presented, and the relationship among the displacement load, curvature radius, and effective focal length is analyzed. Additionally, the optical property of the tunable lens is simulated using the ZEMAX software. A change in focal length from 14.8 mm to 30 mm is demonstrated within the tiny 0.12 mm variation of the displacement load. Numerical analyses show that the lens distortion is less than 2%, and the modulation transfer function reaches 67 line pairs per mm. The solid liquid mixed tunable lens shows the potential for developing a compact, low-aberration, and stable optical system. (C) 2015 Society of PhotoOptical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE)

Abstract:A bio-inspired optical imaging system with a polymer membrane and integrated structure is proposed. Similar to the human eye, the presented system has a biomimetic multilayered optical structure and utilizes a solid-liquid mixed tunable lens as the variable-focus unit. The focal length of the imaging system can be adjusted flexibly through the deformation of the tunable lens when it is compressed. A detailed description of the design principle, materials and fabrication process of the system is presented. The deformation property, adjustable range and surface roughness of the tunable lens are measured. Images under different displacement loads are captured, and the relationships among the back focal length (BFL) and effective focal length (EFL) of the system and the change in radius of the tunable lens are analyzed. A 7.6 times variation of the BFL is achieved through a tiny alteration in radius of 1.2 mm. All the measured resolutions during the deformation stage are larger than 40 line pairs mm-1, and the imaging system shows good optical quality and stability. The proposed optical system is of interest for the development of compact and stable imaging systems with a large zooming range.
An Optical Zoom System Based on Tunable Lens with Polymer Membrane and Multilayered Structure

Abstract:We have developed an optical zoom system based on tunable lens with polymer membrane and multilayered structure. The presented system employed two tunable lenses and two doublet lenses as the main refractive units. Each tunable lens had a delicately designed, solid-liquid mixed structure with multiple internal slim holes, which helped to improve the lens optical properties and stability against gravity. The optical structure and regulation principle of the zoom system is presented, as well as the detailed fabrication process of the tunable lens. Under different displacement loads, the lens deformation properties, and the adjustment ability and imaging characteristics of the zoom system were measured and analyzed. Besides, the spot diagram, field curvature and distortion of the system were simulated using the Zemax software. The magnification of the designed system could be regulated from 0.2X to 4.3X flexibly depending on the focal variation of each tunable lens.
Fabrication and Analyses of Bionic Polymer Lens System

Abstract:In this paper, we design and fabricate a bionic solid tunable lens which is mainly made of polymer materials. The lens focal length can be changed flexibly by pressing the lens surface to alter the curvature radius. A detailed description of the lens structure, materials and fabrication process is presented. The lens mechanical properties and deformation process are simulated and analyzed using Ansys software. A precise experimental device based on a stepping motor is fabricated to measure and analyze the relationship between the displacement load and focal length. The lens focal length can be reversibly changed from 31.8 to 14.1 mm under 1 mm variation of displacement load. This paper offers a feasible way for the design, fabrication, and actuation of the solid tunable lens, which can be used in various machine vision apparatus.

Abstract:This study presents a novel microlens formation technology to implement a polymer ball lens in liquid medium. The highly symmetric ball lens is achieved due to the lower gravity influence in liquid. The microlens' diameter is controlled by the volume of the dispensed polymer. Moreover, it is easy to dispense, form, and align the liquid-phase polymer microlens with MEMS structures while processing in liquid. Thus, the microlens can either be a discrete optical component, or directly integrated with MEMS structures during the process to form a SiOB (silicon-optical-bench). To date, ball lenses with diameter ranging 200mum ~ 600mum and surface roughness < 10 nm are fabricated. A typical sphericity is 8.6mum for a 525mum diameter ball lens. The integration of such polymer micro ball lens on SiOB is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A biomimetic system using polymer lenses for the optical design and application is developed. The system mainly consisted of a bionic cornea lens, voice coil motor, compression ring, bionic crystalline lens, substrate, and CCD sensor. By controlling the current of the voice coil motor, we could change the motion of the compression ring to alter the curvature radius of the bionic crystalline lens, thus adjusting the focal length of the whole system. The integrated constructure of the optical system was presented, as well as the detailed description of the lens composition, material, and fabrication process. Images under different displacement loads were captured, the relationship among the curvature radius, observed back focal length, and predicted effective focal length was analyzed, and the spot diagram of the optical system was simulated using ZEMAX software. The focal length of the optical system ranged from 17.3 to 24.5 mm under a tiny displacement load from 0 to 0.14 mm. Besides, the images captured at different rotating angles presented almost identical patterns and the same image quality, which showed good robustness to the gravity. Microlens formation technology utilizing multi-phase liquid ambiance

Abstract:This research demonstrates a solid microlens formation technology to realize the plano-convex and biconvex lens in multi-phase liquid ambiance. The liquid polymer droplet is shaped by surface tension equilibrium in liquid-liquid and liquid-solid ambience. The radii of curvature of the lens are easily controlled by varying the liquid ambiance. The microlens is implemented using a commercial liquid-polymer dispensing system, and its dimensions can be precisely controlled. The microlens can either be a discrete optical component, or directly integrated with MEMS structures during the process to form a SiOB (silicon-optical-bench). To date, the plano-convex (X = 1) microlens with radius ranging 0.35 mm~2 mm and surface roughness <10 nm are fabricated, and the biconvex lens (0<X<1) is also demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-phase liquid micro lens formation technology to implement a polymer micro ball lens. A UV-curable polymer is dispensed into a buffer liquid to form the ball lens. The buffer liquid provides a gravity-free condition so that the ball lens has a highly symmetric shape. The diameter of the ball lens is controlled by the volume of the dispensed polymer. This technology implements either a discrete optical component, or a ball lens integrated with a MEMS (micro electrical mechanical system) structure to form a SiOB (silicon optical bench). To demonstrate the feasibility of this study, ball lenses with diameters ranging from 200 to 600 mu m and root mean square (RMS) surface roughness of about 10 nm are fabricated using a commercial UV-curable polymer. The average roundness of a 550 mu m diameter ball lens observed from different angles is 3.3 +/- 0.4 mu m. The peak-to-valley and RMS wavefront errors of a 550 mu m diameter ball lens measured by a Mach-Zehnder interferometer are 0.3744 waves (237 nm) and 0.0766 waves (48 nm), respectively. The measured back focal length is about 99 mu m, and the associated effective focal length is about 351 mu m. The integration of such polymer micro ball lenses with suspended micromachined Si(3)N(4) structures to form the SiOB is also demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach in the use of MEMS technology to fabricate micro-optofluidic polymer solid lenses in order to achieve the desired profile, focal length, numerical aperture, and spot size. The resulting polymer solid lenses can be applied in optical data storage systems, imaging systems, and automated optical inspection systems. In order to meet the various needs of different applications, polymer solid lenses may have a spherical or aspherical shape. The method of fabricating polymer solid lenses is different from methods used to fabricate tunable lenses with variable focal length or needing an external control system to change the lens geometry. The current trend in polymer solid lenses is toward the fabrication of microlenses with a high numerical aperture, small clear aperture (<2 mm), and high transmittance. In this paper we focus on the use of thermal energy and electrostatic force in shaping the lens profile, including both spherical and aspherical lenses. In addition, the paper discusses how to fabricate a lens with a high numerical aperture of 0.6 using MEMS and also compares the optical characteristics of polymer lens materials, including SU-8, Norland Optical Adhesive (NOA), and cyclic olefin copolymer (COC). Finally, new concepts and applications related to micro-optofluidic lenses and polymer materials are also discussed.

Abstract:This work presents self-focusing 3D lithography based on the refractive index changes ofpolyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) during photopolymerization. Since the polymerization of PEGDAleads to an increase in the refractive index, the UV light rays in the PEGDA undergo a refractioneffect during exposure, thus being focused and forming 3D photopolymerized structures. Wedemonstrate the potential of self-focusing 3D lithography by fabricating PEGDA microneedles andtrapezoid-shaped microwells. Their structures well match our theoretical estimation. Therefore, ourtheoretical approach can provide a short route to realizing on-demand, complicated 3D structures ofrefractive-index-variable materials with single UV exposure.

Abstract:A novel doublet liquid variable-focus lens with simple structure was designed and fabricated for spherical aberration correction under the condition of small focal length, which was 11.8 mm to 25 mm. By changing the shape of the two PDMS membranes respectively, the focal length of the proposed lens was changed and the spherical aberration was corrected. The size of the entire lens was very small and overall structure of the proposed lens was presented, as well as the design process. The ZEMAX software was used to optimize the optical parameters of the proposed lens. The deformation of the PDMS membranes was measured and fitted by spherical curve. The longitudinal spherical aberration was measured in experiments and compared with the optimal design results. In order to weaken the gravity effect, we designed the shape of the rear PDMS membrane and presented the detailed description of the fabrication process. (C) 2016 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We proposed a novel method for fabricating polymer compound microlenses (PCMLs) using micro-inkjet technique and subsequent curing process. Two different types of PCMLs with sandwich microstructure (PDMS-Glycerol-PDMS), concave and convex PCMLs, have been designed and fabricated in experiments. Convex PCML has two real images and two foci. The concave PCML has one real and one virtual focal planes, which can generate one real image and one virtual image respectively. Moreover, the diameter of concave PCML can be controlled by adjusting the curing time and temperature. The proposed method is simple, efficient and suitable for realizing large-scale high numerical aperture PCMLs array, which has potential applications in diverse optical systems such as optical storage and three-dimensional imaging.

Abstract:The 3D printing technology based on digital light processing (DLP) has highlighted its powerful manufacturing capabilities for optical components. However, the printing structure obtained by DLP based down projection printing is easily adhered to the printing window below, and the printed lens surface will have a step effect. This article uses DLP 3D printing technology to print non spherical lenses. During the printing process, a new type of inert liquid fluoride solution was used as the isolation layer, which can more effectively and conveniently prevent the printing structure from sticking to the printing window. At the same time, a vertical lifting immersion method was proposed to smooth the step effect on the surface of the lens.

A novel solid state tunable micro lens

Abstract:This study reports the current progress of the novel thermal-actuated tunable focal-length micro polymer (PDMS) lens. The prototype of solid state only tunable lens demonstrates a typical variation of focal length from 1852 mum to 1083 mum under a 60 mA driving current. Moreover, this study also demonstrates the capability to integrate the tunable polymer lens with other optical components such as the conventional and dual-focus Fresnel lens. The resulted compound (PDMS+Fresnel) lens reduced the focal-length of Fresnel lens from 13500 mum to 5038 mum. Moreover the focal-length of compound lens was further dropped to 3523 mum at 60 mA driving current. A dual-focus compound lens was also realized to reduce its focal-length from 8000 mum/4000 mum to 1343 mum/975 mum. The compound lens has potential to further perform beam shaping and remove aberrations.

Abstract:As an important optical component, lens is widely used in scientific inquiry and production. At present, lens manufacturing mainly relies on grinding, polishing and other methods. However, these methods often require expensive equipment and complex processes. This paper presents a method of injecting liquid material into the frame structure and curing it quickly. At the same time, based on the principle of energy minimization, we give a set of theory that can accurately predict the lens face shape, and give the simulation results by software. In this paper, 3D printing technology was used to produce different shapes of borders, which were used to produce free-form surface and spherical lens samples. By characterizing their surface contours and optical properties, the practicability of the method was verified. This method has the advantages of low cost, fast forming, high surface smoothness, and can theoretically prepare any size aperture lens, which has great potential for development.

Abstract:We describe a microelectromechanical systems-based actuator for three-dimensional (3D) positioning of a polymer microlens implemented using silicon-on-glass technology. The actuator combines comb drives for lateral tracking with electrostatic parallel plates for out-of-plane focusing as well as tilting of a polymer microlens, yielding fully 3D actuation. The complete actuator is fabricated using wafer bonding of silicon and pyrex wafers; the lens is integrated using polymer dispensing techniques. The 3 DOF positioning of the lens for focusing, tracking, and tilting are experimentally characterized, furthermore, the layout and symmetry would allow 4 DOF movement, demonstrating how this actuation system combined with an integrated lens may be particularly useful for new generations of optical pickups.
The implementation of concave micro optical devices using a polymer dispensing technique

Abstract:This study demonstrates a novel approach to implementing a double-concave (DCV) microlens using a simple polymer dispensing and sucking process. The DCV microlens is implemented at room temperature using a commercially-available pneumatic-controlled polymer dispensing system. The DCV lens profile can be tuned by varying the volume of the dispensed polymer. It is also easy to integrate the present polymer DCV microlens with other suspended micromachined devices such as silicon nitride film and silicon-on-glass (SOG) micromachined structures. This study further employs the process for DCV to implement a concave mirror. The measurement results show a typical DCV lens (made of NOA63 polymer) with negative focal lengths of -1.42 mm (red laser) and -1.17 mm (blue laser), and a concave mirror with a focal length of 3.28 mm. Moreover, this study also demonstrates the integration of a DCV microlens with other optical components, such as plano-convex and double-convex lenses.
Two-dimensional Silicon-on-glass Actuator Combined with a Dispensed Polymer Microlens

Abstract:Actuators for objective lens positioning are indispensable components for writing and reading data to and from optical storage media. Significant advances in the technical capabilities of microlens actuators for optical heads have been achieved using MEMS technology, enabling miniaturisation and integration of optical data storage systems. In this reported work, a compact silicon-on-glass (SOG) actuator for two-dimensional (2D) positioning of a dispensed polymer microlens is developed by MEMS technology. A wafer-level process for fabrication of the SOG actuator is achieved using anodic bonding, in which a Pyrex wafer was bonded with an ultra-thin silicon wafer. Dispensed polymer microlenses are fabricated and subsequently integrated onto the 2D actuator by an automatic handling system. Typical displacements of about ±28.6 μm in the tracking direction and 3.2 μm in the focusing direction are experimentally characterised. The compact 2D SOG actuator and assembly technology may be particularly useful for expanding the application area for the optical head.

Abstract:Microlenses or arrays are key elements in many applications. However, their construction methods involve multiple fabrication processes, thereby increasing the complexity and cost of fabrication. In this study, we demonstrate an optically anisotropic, electrically tunable liquid crystal (LC) microlens array using a simple, one-step fabrication method. The microlens array is formed via photopolymerization-induced phase separation inside a polymer/LC composite. It possesses both polarization-dependent and electrically tunable focusing and imaging properties. Without applying voltage, the microlens array has a natural focal length of 8 mm, which is a result of its inherent gradient refractive index profile. Upon applying voltage above the threshold, the LC molecules reorient along the electric field direction and the focal length of the microlens array gradually increases. Based on its superior properties, the microlens array is further used for integral imaging applications, demonstrating electrically tunable central depth plane. Such LC microlens arrays could find numerous potential applications owing to their advantageous features of being flat, ultra-thin, and tunable, including 3D displays, optical interconnects, and more.
