Abstract:This study demonstrates the torque-enhancement design for a 2-axis magnetostatic SOI scanner driven by a double-side electroplating ferromagnetic film. The present design has two merits: (1) the slender ferromagnetic material patterns with higher length-to-width ratio enhance the magnetization, (2) the backside electroplating of the ferromagnetic film increases the volume of the ferromagnetic materials. This study also establishes the fabrication processes to implement the proposed design. The processes also have two merits: (1) the handle-layer of the SOI wafer is exploited as the shadow mask to pattern the seed-layer at the backside of the device layer, (2) the device layer of the SOI wafer acts as the cathode to enable simultaneous double-side electroplating. In applications, a 2-axis SOI scanner was implemented and characterized. Measurements show a 149% torque enhancement from the double-side electroplating design. The vertical slender ferromagnetic material patterns further increase the magnetostatic torque to 211%. This study also successfully demonstrates the Lissajous scanning using the presented 2-axis SOI scanner.
Magnet circuit design and optimization of giant magnetostrictive transducer

Abstract:To optimize the electromagnetic performance of giant magnetostrictive transducer, the effects of coil's geometry and magnetic circuit components on the transducer's magnetic field characteristics and displacement output were studied, and the magnetic circuit's loss and the gap's magnetic permeability were also analyzed. The appropriate coil structure parameters were presented, and an optimized design scheme was proposed in which pure iron with high magnetic permeability was attached to both ends of the giant magnetostrictive material (GMM) to reduce loss. Both finite element simulation and experimental analysis were conducted to study the effects of different magnet circuit design schemes on the transducer's performance. The results indicate that attaching pure iron to both ends of the GMM can enhance the working magnetic field, reduce the magnetic flux leakage, and increase the displacement output with reduced current in coil, thus improve the thermal condition of the transducer.

Magnetostatic Torsional Actuator With Embedded Nickel Structures For The Improvement Of Driving Force And Wobble Motion

Abstract:This study demonstrates the magnetostatic torsional actuator consisting in a Si-Ni compound frame to significantly improve the driving force. The present design has three merits: (1) it employs a Si mold to simultaneously electroplate/pattern thick Ni, and the Ni and Si structures respectively provide magnetostatic force and superior mechanical properties, (2) the embedded Ni structures not only increase the ferromagnetic material volume but also enhance magnetization strength to enlarge magnetostatic torque, (3) the Si-Ni compound structure, which is nearly symmetric about the torsional axis in the out-of-plane direction, can decrease the moment of inertia and also reduce the wobble motion. In applications, one-axis torsional actuator is implemented and characterized. The experiments show that the Si-Ni compound scanner has an optical scan angle theta(optical) = 90 degrees with the input power 81 mW. The input power is decreased as compared with the existing scanner. Moreover, the out-of-plane wobble motion is only 44 nm at theta(optical) = 15 degrees. Compared with the existing designs consisted of asymmetric structures in the out-of-plane direction, such as electroplated film and silicon rib, about the torsional axis, the equivalent eccentric force is reduced nearly two-fold. In short, the proposed design not only increases the driving force but also decreases the wobble motion.

Abstract:A torque enhancement scheme using axial assisted magnets (AAMs) for surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machines (SPMSMs) is proposed in this paper. It divides the total permanent magnets into two parts viz. main magnets mounted on the rotor surface, and axial assisted magnets at the end of the rotor, with the restriction of the same volume of magnets. According to the theoretical derivation and the finite element (FE) analyses, the proposed design can effectively enhance the output torque and air gap flux density after the optimization of size parameters of main and axial assisted magnets, while the machine outer size, armature current, and volume of total magnets are designed to be the same as the conventional structures of SPMSMs. Besides, the output torque of the proposed SPMSM with AAMs is optimized by way of sequential optimization and a prototype machine is fabricated afterward. Compared with the conventional SPMSM, the proposed design can increase the rated torque by 6.9% in experiments while the value of peak-to-peak torque ripple is kept almost the same.

Abstract:In this paper the cascade structure of axially magnetized Vernier permanent-magnet machine is proposed and discussed. The 2-D equivalent model is applied to simplify the optimization process. It is found that in cascade topology, the effect of pole ratio on output torque has different regularity when the end turn length is considered. The torque density of proposed structure can achieve 7.3kNm/m3 when the end turn length is considered.

Abstract:There is a storied scientific history in the role of mechanical instruments for the measurement of fundamental physical interactions. Among these include the detection of magnetic torques via a displacement of a compliant mechanical sensor as a result of angular momentum transfer. Modern nanofabrication methods have enabled the coupling of mechanical structures to single, miniature magnetic specimens. This has allowed for strikingly sensitive detection of magnetic hysteresis and other quasi-static effects, as well as spin resonances, in materials confined to nanoscale geometries. The extraordinary sensitivities achieved in mechanical transduction through recent breakthroughs in cavity optomechanics, where a high-finesse optical cavity is used for readout of motion, are now being harnessed for torque magnetometry. In this article, we review the recent progress in mechanical detection of magnetic torques, highlight current applications, and speculate on possible future developments in the technology and science. Guidelines for designing and implementing the measurements are also included.
Development of a Permanent Magnet Slotless Limited-Angle Torque Motor with a Moving Coil for Optical Scanning System

Abstract:This paper presents a permanent magnet (PM) slotless limited-angle torque motor (LATM) with a moving coil for optical scanning system, which possesses the characteristic of both linearizing torque versus rotor position angle and rapid dynamic response. A magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) for the proposed LATM is derived and implemented in the design process to estimate torque coefficient, moment of inertia, electromechanical time constant and other relative parameters of the LATM. Coil parameters have also been optimized by simple analytical method so that a less electromechanical time constant can be achieved. Then, 3-D finite element method (FEM) is employed to validate the analytical method and to analyze accurately electromagnetic performance of this slotless LATMs. Finally, a prototype machine is established which experimental results well agree with theoretical and simulation analysis. In addition, a simple linear control system based on conventional PID controller is established, which shows better control characteristic of the proposed slotless LATM.

Abstract:Torque performance, especially torque density, is a critical performance index for the flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine that is attractive for the propulsion system. In this article, a novel FSPM machine with dual sets of magnet arrangements is proposed. With the novel topology, the torque density of the proposed machine is significantly improved due to much increased working harmonic contents of magnetomotive force (MMF). Moreover, the cogging torque is also inherently reduced, which makes the proposed machine a promising candidate in the FSPM machine family. The operating principle of the proposed FSPM machine is revealed based on the MMF–permeance model and the numerical finite element analysis (FEA). The effect of geometric parameters, such as magnet thickness, auxiliary tooth width, and rotor tooth width on the average torque and cogging torque, is also investigated. Finally, a prototype has been manufactured to validate the analysis conclusion. With experimental test results, it is demonstrated that the proposed topology can achieve 30.8% higher torque density, 79.4% lower cogging torque, and 15.6% higher power factor than the conventional counterpart.

Abstract:This paper studies the torque production mechanism of the dual-stator axial-field flux-switching permanent magnet (DSAFFSPM) machine. Due to the double-sided slotting design of such topology, more resultant air-gap working harmonics in the air-gap flux density are responsible for the torque production and the stator air-gap permeance is especially considered in the investigation. Based on the magnetic force (MMF)-permeance model, the composition and difference of the air-gap working harmonics are demonstrated. The DSAFFSPM machine torque contributions of the main working harmonics are analyzed theoretically and quantified by finite element analysis (FEA). The influence laws of the parameters on the working harmonics are shown and this effectively improves the motor operation performance. Finally, some experiments on the DSAFFSPM machine are carried out to validate the analytical and FEA results.

The Improvement of Micro-Torsional-Mirror for High Frequency Scanning

Abstract:In the present study, a novel micro torsional mirror used as a high frequency optical scanner is proposed. The proposed micromachiend torsional mirror exploits the electrostatic torque generators and a reinforced mirror plate to improve the performance of the device. Although the torque generator is driven by gap closing electrodes, its traveling distance is remarkably magnified by a novel lever mechanism. Moreover, the torque generators could drive of the mirror plate without wobble motion. A reinforced frame is used to stiffen the mirror plate to improve the optical performance of the scanner. In order to demonstrate the concept proposed in this study, micromachined torsional mirrors were fabricated through the integration of the DRIE, the surface and the bulk micromachining processes. According to the measurement, the proposed micro torsional mirror could operation in relativity low voltage, the scanning frequency of the mirror can reach 17.7 kHz, and the optical scan angle is 5 degrees.

Abstract:We present a novel scanning-tunneling-microscope (STM) and magnetic-force-microscope (MFM) combo (SMC) system, which is for using in a commercial Oxford 52 mm cold bore 18/20 T superconducting magnet. There are three design highlights: (1) An unique vacuum chamber consisting of two lengths of pipe: a long outer diameter (OD) 19 mm pipe and a short OD 50 mm capped-off pipe that are knife-edge press sealed together by two half-cylindrical clamps without diameter expansion (still fits the ¿52 mm bore). (2) A compact SMC head, in which a pillar and a piezoelectric tube scanner (S1) are mounted in parallel with one ball glued on the pillar top and two balls glued on the scanner top. The three triangularly arranged balls support a triangular slider piece. Additional two scanners standing underneath the slider scan the STM and MFM tips respectively. By inertial stepping, the scanner S1 can move the slider toward the pillar (coarse approach) or rotate the slider about the pillar (change scanning tips). (3) A design in integrating complicated instruments into small bore magnet while still keeping high-field compatibility. The objective of the SMC, its progress and the test results are also described in this paper.
Design of a Non-Contact Radial Torque Sensor with Variable Torque Range by Electromagnetic Coil Coupling with Piezoelectric Sensor

Abstract:Recently, due to the development of automation technology, torque measuring and monitoring technologies have been brought to the focus. However, the commercially available sensors have the disadvantage of large volume, which results in the difficulty of installation on existing automated machines. Responding to the above-mentioned problem, a contactless torque sensor that uses an electromagnetic coil combined with a permanent magnet was proposed. By adjusting the input electric current in the coil, the strength of the magnetic field can be controlled to generate a non-contact magnetic force to resist external torque loading. For the measurement of such a magnetic force, a cantilever-beam mechanism comprising a piezoelectric-loading (PZT-L) sensor is employed to estimate the external static force by measuring the variation of the electric impedance. According to the measured results, the proposed PZT-L sensor demonstrates the accuracy of the proposed design, for which the maximum estimated error was around 6%. Finally, the proposed contactless torque sensor with 11 cm in diameter and 2 cm in thickness was employed to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis. From the sensor characteristic measurement, the detection range for external torque can be from 7.8 to 125.6 N-mm when the driven current input ranged from 2 to 10 A. Therefore, the experimental results presented that the moment of inertia via the resisted torque can be adjusted by the proposed non-contact torque-sensing system according to the measuring condition.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel sandwiched switched flux permanent magnet (SSFPM) machine using V-shaped magnets for maximizing output torque and improving magnet usage efficiency. The operation principle of conventional 6/10-stator/rotor-pole SSFPM machine is firstly described. Such SSFPM machine and a novel one with V-shaped magnets are optimized and then compared with the conventional 12/10-stator/rotor-pole SFPM machine by two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA). It is found that the SSFPM machine with V-shaped magnets exhibits higher torque density and higher magnet usage efficiency. In addition, the influence of step-skew angle on the torque ripple suppression is investigated in the SSFPM machine with V-shaped magnets. The FEA predicted back-EMF, cogging torque, torque-current characteristic are validated by experiments on the prototype machines.

Abstract:This paper deals with the analysis and comprehensive optimization of the torque and radial force ripples in the arc flux switching permanent magnet linear motor, which is equipped in the large scanning equipment. The torque ripple is caused by the no-load torque including cogging torque and end force. Specially, a worth noting problem of unbalanced radial forces is caused by the discontinuity of the arc stator, which is easily behaved as the rotor and load vibrations. In this paper, an analytical model based on the magnetic permeance function is established to analyze the principle of the no-load torque and radial force. Based on it, the optimization goal of force harmonics can be determined, and the feasible optimization approach can be predicted. It demonstrates the harmonic distribution of the torque is completely opposite to that of the radial force. Pure structural parameter optimization can not achieve the satisfactory results. To effectively suppress the no-load torque and radial force at the same time, a novel structure with two sets of specially arranged three-phase stator is proposed. An obvious optimization effect is verified according to the detailed FEM and experiment analysis.

The experimental results confirm torque performance improvement by utilized this special tooth-tip structure.
Torque Density Optimization of Spoke Array Vernier Permanent-Magnet Machines

Abstract:This paper works on an outer-rotor spoke-array Vernier permanent-magnet machine. It can provide high torque in low-speed direct-drive conditions. In this paper, the working principle of Vernier permanent-magnet machines is presented. A magnetic finite element model, a thermal finite element model and a thermal analytical model are built. Using these models, the torque density without considering the end parts of the Vernier permanent-magnet machine with fixed outer radius is optimized. From the optimized dimensions result, a new Vernier machine structure with disconnected flux modulation poles is proposed. Based on 2D modeling, with temperature limits of 120 °C and 100 °C for the coils and PMs respectively, and fixed outer radius of 71 mm, its torque density can overcome 70 Nm/L, which is higher than conventional Vernier PM machines.
