Abstract:We introduce and study numerically a method for dispersion engineering of Si nanophotonic wires using a thin conformal silicon nitride film deposited around the Si core. Simulations show that this approach may be used to achieve the dispersion characteristics required for broadband, phase-matched, four-wave mixing processes, while simultaneously maintaining strong modal confinement within the Si core for high effective nonlinearity.
Subwavelength-diameter Silica Wire for Light In-Coupling to Silicon-Based Waveguide

Abstract:Coupling between subwavelength-diameter silica wires and silicon-based waveguides is studied using the parallel three-dimensional (3D) finite-different time-domain method. Conventional butt-coupling to a silica-substrated silicon wire waveguide gives above 40% transmission at the wavelength range from 1300 to 1750 nm with good robustness against axial misalignments. Slow light can be generated by counter-directional coupling between a silica wire and a two-dimensional (2D) silicon photonic crystal slab waveguide. Through dispersion-band engineering, 82% transmission is achieved over a coupling distance of 50 lattice constants. The group velocity is estimated as 1/35 of the light speed in vacuum.

Abstract:Based on the exact solutions of Maxwell's equations, we have studied the basic theoretical properties of submicron and nano-diameter air-cladding silica-wire waveguides. The single-mode condition and the modal field of the fundamental modes have been obtained. Silica wires with diameters of 100-1000nm and lengths ranging from hundreds of micrometer to over 1 millimeter have been fabricated. SEM examination shows that these wires have uniform diameters and smooth surfaces, which are favorable for optical wave guiding. Light has been sent into these wires by optical coupling, and guiding light through a bent wire has also been demonstrated. These wires are promising for assembling photonic devices on a micron or submicron scale.

Abstract:Single-mode optical wave guiding properties of silica and silicon subwavelength-diameter wires are studied with exact solutions of Maxwell's equations. Single mode conditions, modal fields, power distribution, group velocities and waveguide dispersions are studied. It shows that air-clad subwavelength-diameter wires have interesting properties such as tight-confinement ability, enhanced evanescent fields and large waveguide dispersions that are very promising for developing future microphotonic devices with subwavelength-width structures.

Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:Based on exact solutions of Maxwell's equations of a 3-layer-structured cylindrical waveguide, we calculated dispersion shifts in thin-dielectric-coated optical nanowires. Typical parameters of silica and silicon nanowires are used for numerical simulations. It shows that, the dispersion of a nanowire waveguide can be made highly sensitive to the thickness and index of the coating layer, and a thin coat may lead to considerable dispersion shift of the guided light. For example, in a 300-nm-diameter silicon nanowire, a 1% decrease in diameter of the silicon core by oxidation of silicon into silica shell leads to a 34% decrease in dispersion at 1450-nm wavelength. Results presented in this work suggest the possibility of tuning waveguide dispersions of optical nanowires by coating thin dielectric layers.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate two- and three-dimensional (3D) simulations of an active silicon-based photonic crystal chromatic dispersion compensator utilizing the free carrier dispersion effect. The device has a low power consumption of 114nW and its intrinsic device modulation speed is predicted to function at 40.5MHz. Due to the device architecture, simulation must be carried out in 3D so as to fully encapsulate the effects of the photonic crystal contributions in the active silicon. The novel device allows waveguiding and electrical transport to be individually tailored to a large extent.

Abstract:The nonlinear optics of Si photonic wires is discussed. The distinctive features of these waveguides are that they have extremely large third-order susceptibility chi((3)) and dispersive properties. The strong dispersion and large third-order nonlinearity in Si photonic wires cause the linear and nonlinear optical physics in these guides to be intimately linked. By carefully choosing the waveguide dimensions, both linear and nonlinear optical properties of Si wires can be engineered. We review the fundamental optical physics and emerging applications for these Si wires. In many cases, the relatively low threshold powers for nonlinear optical effects in these wires make them potential candidates for functional on-chip nonlinear optical devices of just a few millimeters in length; conversely, the absence of nonlinear optical impairment is important for the use of Si wires in on-chip interconnects. In addition, the characteristic length scales of linear and nonlinear optical effects in Si wires are markedly different from those in commonly used optical guiding systems, such as optical fibers or photonic crystal fibers, and therefore guiding structures based on Si wires represent ideal optical media for investigating new and intriguing physical phenomena.

Abstract:Silicon nitride waveguides have emerged as an excellent platform for photonic applications, including nonlinear optical signal processing, owing to their relatively high Kerr nonlinearity, negligible two photon absorption, and wide transparent bandwidth. In this paper, we propose an effective approach using 3D finite element method to optimize the dispersion characteristics of silicon nitride waveguides for four-wave mixing (FWM) applications. Numerical studies show that a flat and low dispersion profile can be achieved in a silicon nitride waveguide with the optimized dimensions. Near-zero dispersion of 1.16 ps/km/nm and 0.97 ps/km/nm at a wavelength of 1550 nm are obtained for plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) silicon nitride waveguides, respectively. The fabricated micro-ring resonator with the optimized dimensions exhibits near-zero dispersion of −0.04 to −0.1 ps/m/nm over a wavelength range of 130 nm which agrees with the numerical simulation results. FWM results show that near-zero phase mismatch and high conversion efficiencies larger than −12 dB using a low pump power of 0.5 W in a 13-cm long silicon nitride waveguide are achieved.

Abstract:In this article we analyzed the guiding properties of air-clad silicon dielectric optical waveguides which have the core width of nanometre size based on Maxwell equation and numerical analysis.By programming,we obtained the proportion of power distribution in cladding,core,and substrate;the curve of how the effective refractive index varied with the core width;how group refractive index and group velocities varied with wavelength and the dispersion curve.We compared these properties with micron-sized waveguides,and found that because of the decrease of core width,the mode field leaks out a lot,which enhances the coupling.This is very important to design and fabric nano-sized optical devices.

Abstract:A simple method to design polarization dispersion compensated arrayed waveguide gratings based on silicon nanowires is proposed using angled star couplers with different diffraction orders for TE and TM polarizations. Polarization dispersion compensation for all channels is achieved by using a 380nm×220nm silicon waveguide with an upper-cladding of SU-8. The simulation results demonstrate the validity of the design.

Abstract:The properties of truly confined modes of a 2D hex horizontal photonic crystal slot slab waveguide are analyzed. Then the dispersion of liner defect waveguide is calculated. In addition, what influence the slots with different height have over the band structure and the group velocity dispersion of the defect mode waveguide are analyzed. Based on these studies, an ultra-compact silicon-based Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator is proposed. For a design with almost negligible first order chromatic dispersion in an optical bandwidth of 1THz, we predict a modulation bandwidth of 40GHz and a length of about 80 mu m. This is achieved by infiltrating an electro-optic polymer into a slotted photonic crystal waveguide, the strong field confinement in slotted waveguides and the slow light interaction enhancements provided by the photonic crystal waveguide, where group velocity and dispersion may be controlled.

Abstract:We propose a dispersion-flattened technology for producing broadband and low anomalous dispersion with minimal zero-dispersion wavelengths (ZDWs). This structure can be formed by nanophotonic waveguides using different material combinations. Flat dispersion varying between 0 and 27 ps/nm/km and spanning a range of wavelengths between 1290 and 4570 nm can be achieved. Without applying dispersion hybridization and using complex material combinations, dispersion demonstrates good tolerance to pump wavelength selection and is easier to introduce. Furthermore, the designed structures are applied to generate a supercontinuum over three octaves considering wavelength dependent loss from cladding, which exhibits an excellent bandwidth of − 40 dB even with increasing losses from the waveguide material or structure generation. These findings are useful for supercontinuum generation over multiple octaves in different platforms, which is promising for self-referenced f-2f systems and spectroscopy applications.

Abstract:We propose double-cladded and multi-cladded waveguide structures that enable flexible engineering of group-velocity dispersion over multi-octave spanning spectral range, allowing to produce intriguing dispersion characteristics that oscillate between normal and anomalous dispersion in a sinusoidal-like fashion with controllable magnitude, which will be very useful for nonlinear photonic applications. The proposed waveguides are easy to fabricate in practice, which we expect to have great potential for broad applications in nonlinear photonics, quantum optics, and optical communication. Abstract:We propose to generate a sub-nanometer-confined optical field in a nanoslit waveguiding mode in a coupled nanowire pair (CNP). We show that, when a conventional waveguide mode with a proper polarization is evanescently coupled into a properly designed CNP with a central nanoslit, it can be efficiently channeled into a high-purity nanoslit mode within a waveguiding length <10 mu m. The CNP can be either freestanding or on-chip by using a tapered fiber or planar waveguide for input-coupling, with a coupling efficiency up to 95%. Within the slit region, the output diffraction-limited nanoslit mode offers an extremely confined optical field (similar to 0.3 nm x 3.3 nm) with a peak-to-background ratio higher than 25 dB and can be operated within a 200-nm bandwidth. The group velocity dispersion of the nanoslit mode for ultrafast pulsed operation is also briefly investigated. Compared with the previous lasing configuration, the waveguiding scheme demonstrated here is not only simple and straightforward in structural design but is also much flexible and versatile in operation. Therefore, the waveguiding scheme we show here may offer an efficient and flexible platform for exploring light-matter interactions beyond the nanometer scale, and developing optical technologies ranging from superresolution nanoscopy and atom/molecule manipulation to ultra-sensitivity detection.

Abstract:The strong dispersion and large third-order nonlinearity in Si photonic wires are intimately linked in the optical physics needed for the optical control of phase. By carefully choosing the waveguide dimensions, both linear and nonlinear optical properties of Si wires can be engineered. In this paper we provide a review of the control of phase using nonlinear-optical effects such as self-phase and cross-phase modulation in dispersion-engineered Si wires. The low threshold powers for phase-changing effects in Si-wires make them potential candidates for functional nonlinear optical devices of just a few millimeters in length.

Abstract:A silicon nitride waveguide is a promising platform for integrated photonics, particularly due to its low propagation loss compared to other complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible waveguides, including silicon-on-insulator. Input/output coupling in such thin optical waveguides is a key issue for practical implementations. Fiber-to-chip grating couplers in silicon nitride usually exhibit low coupling efficiency because the moderate index contrast leads to weak radiation strengths and poor directionality. Here, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, experimental demonstration of a recently proposed apodized-imaging fiber-to-chip grating coupler in silicon nitride that images an in-plane waveguide mode to an optical fiber placed at a specific distance above the chip. By employing amplitude and phase apodization, the diffracted optical field of the grating is matched to the fiber mode. High grating directionality is achieved by using staircase grating teeth, which produce a blazing effect. Experimental results demonstrate an apodized-imaging grating coupler with a record coupling efficiency of -1.5 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of 60 nm in the C-band. (C) 2017 Optical Society of America
