Abstract:Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) designed for reconnaissance and difficult to reach missions have excellent potential utility and are of interest for military and civilian applications as flight platforms for optical, acoustic, electronic and chemical sensors for operation in hazardous sites with aerial access. They are autonomous or semiautonomous airborne vehicles, measuring less than 200 meters in any dimension and weighing about 150 grams, accomplishing a useful mission at an affordable cost. Nominal performance goals include real-time imaging, navigation, and communications capabilities, a range of up to 5 kilometers, and a top speed of up to 60 kph, during missions lasting 10 mins to 1 hrs. MAVs may be regarded as six-degree-of-freedom sensor platforms that will enable a broad spectrum of small-unit and special operations. There are two prominent features of MAVs flight: (i) low operating Reynolds number (Re: 10(4)-10(5)), resulting in unfavorable aerodynamic conditions to support controlled flight, and (ii) small physical dimensions, resulting in certain favorable scaling characteristics including structural strength, reduced stall speed, and low inertia. Owing to the low Reynolds number, the aerodynamic performance of all lifting surfaces is degraded. The small scales and speeds also mean that atmospheric turbulence has a severe effect, and small thermal cycle engines that could profit from the high energy densities of fossil fuels are unavailable. It is thus difficult to obtain good flight performance.As the rapid development of microelectronics and Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology, MAVs become a feasible concept. MEMS are extremely small machines in which electronic and mechanical components are combined on a single silicon chip using micromachining techniques. Development of Low Reynolds number aerodynamics design and MEMS-based autopilot system techniques are the near term object. Progresses in sensor, in control and in navigation technologies offer completely new opportunities. This paper deals with MAVs, which are the flying carriers of these advanced sensors. The developments of MAVs around the world, particularly on potential applications, wing model concepts, and onboard avionics, are reviewed at first. The bottleneck and the current situation for the integrated navigation, guidance and control system design in MAVs are then analyzed. The question of whether MEMS can help improve the performance of futuristic MAVs is also pondered.
