Abstract:Fixed and rotary-wing unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), originally developed for military purposes, have widely spread in scientific, civilian, commercial, and recreational applications. Among the most interesting and challenging aspects of small UAS technology are endurance enhancement and autonomous flight; i.e., mission management and control. This paper proposes a practical method for estimation of true and calibrated airspeed, Angle of Attack (AOA), and Angle of Sideslip (AOS) for small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs, up to 20 kg mass, 1200 ft altitude above ground level, and airspeed of up to 100 knots) or light aircraft, for which weight, size, cost, and power-consumption requirements do not allow solutions used in large airplanes (typically, arrays of multi-hole Pitot probes). The sensors used in this research were a static and dynamic pressure sensor (“micro-Pitot tube” MPX2010DP differential pressure sensor) and a 10 degrees of freedom (DoF) inertial measurement unit (IMU) for attitude determination. Kalman and complementary filtering were applied for measurement noise removal and data fusion, respectively, achieving global exponential stability of the estimation error. The methodology was tested using experimental data from a prototype of the devised sensor suite, in various indoor-acquisition campaigns and laboratory tests under controlled conditions. AOA and AOS estimates were validated via correlation between the AOA measured by the micro-Pitot and vertical accelerometer measurements, since lift force can be modeled as a linear function of AOA in normal flight. The results confirmed the validity of the proposed approach, which could have interesting applications in energy-harvesting techniques.

Abstract:Profiling wind information when using a small unmanned aerial vehicle (sUAV) is vital for atmospheric profiling and monitoring attitude during flight. Wind speed on an sUAV can be measured directly using ultrasonic anemometers or by calculating its attitude control information. The former method requires a relatively large payload for an onboard ultrasonic anemometer, while the latter requires real-time flight log data access, which depends on the UAV manufacturers. This study proposes the feasibility of a small thermal anemometer to measure wind speeds inexpensively using a small commercial quadcopter (DJI Mavic2: M2). A laboratory experiment demonstrated that the horizontal wind speed bias increased linearly with ascending sUAV speed. A smoke experiment during hovering revealed the downward wind bias (1.2 m s−1) at a 12-cm height above the M2 body. Field experiments in the ice-covered ocean demonstrated that the corrected wind speed agreed closely with the shipboard wind data observed by a calibrated ultrasonic anemometer. A dual-mount system comprising thermal anemometers was proposed to measure wind speed and direction.
Experimental Study to Quantify the Rotor-to-Rotor Interaction Characteristics of a Small Unmanned-Aerial-Vehicle

Abstract:The flow interactions between laterally aligned rotors were investigated experimentally to study the rotor-to-rotor interactions on the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Two identical rotors, similar to the dimensions of Phantom 3 (DJI), were mounted separately on different stages in a wide-open space. High-accuracy force and sound measurements were conducted to document the thrust and noise at various separation distances. The detailed flow structures and corresponding vortex evolutions behind the rotors were resolved clearly by using high-resolution PIV measurements. As the rotor separation distance decreased, intensified flow interactions were noted within the rotors. More specifically, the twinrotor with separation distance of L= 0.05D exhibited a significantly enhanced thrust fluctuation (i.e., ~ 240% higher) and augmented noise level (i.e., ~ 3dB) in comparison with that of baseline case. Measured PIV results indicated that a strong recirculation region existed near the top-right of the twin-rotor case, which is believed to be the reason for the increased thrust fluctuations and aeroacoustic noise level.

Abstract:Airspeed measurement is crucial for UAV control. To achieve accurate airspeed measurements for UAVs, this paper calculates airspeed data by measuring changes in air pressure and temperature. Based on this, a data processing method based on mechanical filtering and the improved AR-SHAKF algorithm is proposed to indirectly measure airspeed with high precision. In particular, a mathematical model for an airspeed measurement system was established, and an installation method for the pressure sensor was designed to measure the total pressure, static pressure, and temperature. Secondly, the measurement principle of the sensor was analyzed, and a metal tube was installed to act as a mechanical filter, particularly in cases where the aircraft has a significant impact on the gas flow field. Furthermore, a time series model was used to establish the sensor state equation and the initial noise values. It also enhanced the Sage–Husa adaptive filter to analyze the unavoidable error impact of initial noise values. By constraining the range of measurement noise, it achieved adaptive noise estimation. To validate the superiority of the proposed method, a low-complexity airspeed measurement device based on MEMS pressure sensors was designed. The results demonstrate that the airspeed measurement device and the designed velocity measurement method can effectively calculate airspeed with high measurement accuracy and strong interference resistance.

Abstract:Air speed, the angle of attack and the angle of sideslip are fundamental parameters in the control of flying bodies. Conventional detection techniques use sensors that may protrude outside the aircraft and be too bulky and intrusive for small unmanned air vehicles and micro air vehicles. In this paper, a novel and practical methodology by which the flight parameters are inferred from multiple hot-film flow speed sensors mounted on the surface of the wing is presented. In order to get a good mathematical relation between the readings of the sensors and the flight parameters, we use a back-propagation neural network to model the relationship. The methodology is validated by wind tunnel experiments, and the experimental results are presented.

Fast-response hot-wire flow sensors for wind and gust estimation on UAVs

Abstract:Due to limitations in available sensor technology, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) lack an active sensing capability to measure turbulence, gusts, or other unsteady aerodynamic phenomena. Conventional in situ anemometry techniques fail to deliver in the harsh and dynamic multirotor environment due to form factor, resolution, or robustness requirements. To address this capability gap, a novel, fast-response sensor system to measure a wind vector in two dimensions is introduced and evaluated. This system, known as `MAST' (for MEMS Anemometry Sensing Tower), leverages advances in microelectromechanical (MEMS) hot-wire devices to produce a solid-state, lightweight, and robust flow sensor suitable for real-time wind estimation onboard a UAV. The MAST uses five pentagonally-arranged microscale hot-wires to determine the wind vector's direction and magnitude. The MAST's performance was evaluated in a wind tunnel at speeds up to 5~m/s and orientations of 0 - 360 degrees. A neural network sensor model was trained from the wind tunnel data to estimate the wind vector from sensor signals. The average error of the sensor is 0.14 m/s for speed and 1.6 degrees for direction. Furthermore, 95% of measurements are within 0.36 m/s error for speed and 5.0 degree error for direction. With a bandwidth of 570 Hz determined from square-wave testing, the MAST stands to greatly enhance UAV wind estimation capabilities and enable capturing relevant high-frequency phenomena in flow conditions.

A Miniature Integrated Navigation System for Rotary-Wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

Abstract:This paper presents the development of a low cost miniature navigation system for autonomous flying rotary-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The system incorporates measurements from a low cost single point GPS and a triaxial solid state inertial/magnetic sensor unit. The navigation algorithm is composed of three modules running on a microcontroller: the sensor calibration module, the attitude estimator, and the velocity and position estimator. The sensor calibration module relies on a recursive least square based ellipsoid hypothesis calibration algorithm to estimate biases and scale factors of accelerometers and magnetometers without any additional calibration equipment. The attitude estimator is a low computational linear attitude fusion algorithm that effectively incorporates high frequency components of gyros and low frequency components of accelerometers and magnetometers to guarantee both accuracy and bandwidth of attitude estimation. The velocity and position estimator uses two cascaded complementary filters which fuse translational acceleration, GPS velocity, and position to improve the bandwidth of velocity and position. The designed navigation system is feasible for miniature UAVs due to its low cost, simplicity, miniaturization, and guaranteed estimation errors. Both ground tests and autonomous flight tests of miniature unmanned helicopter and quadrotor have shown the effectiveness of the proposed system, demonstrating its promise in UAV systems.

Abstract:Abstract. Wind data collection in the atmospheric boundary layer benefits from short-term wind speed measurements using unmanned aerial vehicles. Fixed-wing and rotary-wing devices with diverse anemometer technology have been used in the past to provide such data, but the accuracy still has the potential to be increased. A lightweight drone for carrying an industry-standard precision sonic anemometer was developed. Accuracy tests have been performed with the isolated anemometer at high tilt angles in a calibration wind tunnel, with the drone flying in a large wind tunnel and with the full system flying at different heights next to a bistatic lidar reference. The propeller-induced flow deflects the air to some extent, but this effect is compensated effectively. The data fusion shows a substantial reduction of crosstalk (factor of 13) between ground speed and wind speed. When compared with the bistatic lidar in very turbulent conditions, with a 10 s averaging interval and with the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) constantly circling around the measurement volume of the lidar reference, wind speed measurements have a bias between −2.0 % and 4.2 % (root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 4.3 % to 15.5 %), vertical wind speed bias is between −0.05 and 0.07 m s−1 (RMSE of 0.15 to 0.4 m s−1), elevation bias is between −1 and 0.7∘ (RMSE of 1.2 to 6.3∘), and azimuth bias is between −2.6 and 7.2∘ (RMSE of 2.6 to 8.0∘). Key requirements for good accuracy under challenging and dynamic conditions are the use of a full-size sonic anemometer, a large distance between anemometer and propellers, and a suitable algorithm for reducing the effect of propeller-induced flow. The system was finally flown in the wake of a wind turbine, successfully measuring the spatial velocity deficit and downwash distribution during forward flight, yielding results that are in very close agreement to lidar measurements and the theoretical distribution. We believe that the results presented in this paper can provide important information for designing flying systems for precise air speed measurements either for short duration at multiple locations (battery powered) or for long duration at a single location (power supplied via cable). UAVs that are able to accurately measure three-dimensional wind might be used as a cost-effective and flexible addition to measurement masts and lidar scans.

Abstract:Micro airspeed meters were developed for Micro Aerial Vehicles that are small, light, and low power. The micro airspeed meter includes a micro pitot tube and a low-speed-measuring circuit based on a micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) differential pressure meter. An integral computer is used to measure the voltage from the pressure meter and calculate the airspeed. The measurement range is (326 m/s,) the mass is (4.3 g) and the precision is 1 m/s. The micro airspeed meter has been successfully used on unmanned aerial vehicles with wingspans less than 400 mm.
Acoustic Beamforming for Object-relative Distance Estimation and Control in Unmanned Air Vehicles using Propulsion System Noise

Abstract:Unmanned air vehicles often produce significant noise from their propulsion systems. Using this broadband signal as "acoustic illumination" for an auxiliary sensing system could make vehicles more robust at a minimal cost. We present an acoustic beamforming-based algorithm that estimates object-relative distance with a small two-microphone array using the generated propulsion system noise of a vehicle. We demonstrate this approach in several closed-loop distance feedback control tests with a mounted quad-rotor vehicle in a noisy environment and show accurate object-relative distance estimates more than 2x further than the baseline channel-based approach. We conclude that this approach is robust to several practical vehicle and noise situations and shows promise for use in more complex operating environments.

Abstract:One of the crucial branches of activity at the Łukasiewicz Research Network-Institute of Aviation is developing a suborbital rocket vehicle capable of launching small payloads beyond the Earth's atmosphere, reaching over 100 km in altitude. Ensuring safety is a primary concern, particularly given the finite flight zone and impact area. Crucial to safety analysis is the wind profile, especially in the very first seconds of a flight, when rocket velocity is of the same order as the wind speed. Traditional near-ground wind data sources, ranging from wind towers to numerical models of the atmosphere, have limitations. Wind towers are costly and unfeasible at many test ranges used for launches, while numerical modeling may not reflect the specific ground profile near the launcher due to their large cell size (2 to +10 km). Meteorological balloons are not favorable for such measurements as they aim to provide the launch operator with a wind profile at high altitudes, and are launched only 1-2 times per flight attempt. Our study sought to prototype a wind measurement system designed to acquire near-ground wind profile data. It focuses on measuring wind direction and speed at near-ground altitudes with higher flight frequency, offering data on demand shortly before launch to help ensure safety. This atmosphere sounding system consists of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with an onboard ultrasonic wind sensor. Some reports in the literature have discussed the possibility of using UAV-borne anemometers, but the topic of measurement errors introduced by placing the anemometer onboard an UAV remains under studied. Limited research in this area underlines the need for experimental validation of design choices-for specific types of UAVs, anemometers, and mounting. This paper presents a literature review, a detailed overview of the prototyped system, and flight test results in both natural (outdoor) and controlled (indoor, no wind) conditions. Data from the UAV system's anemometer was benchmarked against a stationary reference weather station, in order to examine the influence of the UAV's rotor on the anemometer readings. Our findings show a wind speed Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 5 m/s and a directional RMSE of below 5.3° (both averaged for 1 min). The results were also compared with similar UAV-based wind measurements. The prototyped system was successfully used in a suborbital rocket launch campaign, thus demonstrating the feasibility of integrating UAVs with dedicated sensors for performing regular meteorological measurements in automatic mode.

Abstract:With the increase in the use of small uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) there is a growing need for real-time weather forecasting to improve the safety of low-altitude aircraft operations. This will require integration of measurements with autonomous systems since current available sampling lack sufficient resolution within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). Thus, the current work aims to assess the ability to measure wind speeds from a quad-copter UAS and compare the performance with that of a fixed mast. Two laboratory tests were initially performed to assess the spatial variation in the vertically induced flow from the rotors. The horizontal distribution above the rotors was examined in a water tunnel at speeds and rotation rates to simulate nominally full throttle with a relative air speed of 0 or 8 m/s. These results showed that the sensor should be placed between rotor pairs. The vertical distribution was examined from a single rotor test in a large chamber, which suggested that at full throttle the sensor should be about 400 mm above the rotor plane. Field testing was then performed with the sensor positioned in between both pairs of rotors at 406, 508, and 610 mm above the rotor plane. The mean velocity over the given period was within 5.5% of the that measured from a fixed mast over the same period. The variation between the UAS and mast sensors were better correlated with the local mean shear than separation distance, which suggests height mismatch could be the source of error. The fluctuating velocity was quantified with the comparison of higher order statistics as well as the power spectral density, which the mast and UAS spectra were in good agreement regardless of the separation distance. This implies that for the current configuration a separation distance of 5.3 rotor diameters was sufficient to minimize the influence of the rotors.

Abstract:This paper introduces a low-cost, integrated angle of attack (AOA) and angle of sideslip (AOS) measurement system for small-sized UAVs. It introduces the specific implementation process of its hardware design, implementation, and data filtering fusion algorithm. The system includes a set of integrated, weather vaned AOA and AOS measurement sensors that can be quickly installed and are suitable for various small-sized UAV power layouts. A method for estimating AOA and AOS based on the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm and the fusion of inertial data collected by the flight controller was also implemented. The sensor proposed in this paper was mounted on a small-sized UAV for test flight verification, and the accuracy of the two proposed AOA and AOS measurement methods was compared. The flight test results show that the measured values of the wind vane sensor and the estimated values of the inertial data fusion algorithm proposed in this paper have high measurement accuracy, and the root mean square error of the two is less than 2 degrees, which reflects the observation performance of the two methods. The sensor and angle fusion estimation method proposed in this paper can serve as redundant backups for each other in the airborne application environment, significantly improving the measurement robustness and providing technical practice for the broad application of this sensor in small-sized UAVs.
Using Schlieren Imaging and a Radar Acoustic Sounding System for the Detection of Close-in Air Turbulence

Abstract:This paper presents a novel sensor for the detection and characterization of regions of air turbulence. As part of the ground truth process, it consists of a combined Schlieren imager and a Radar Acoustic Sounding System (RASS) to produce dual-modality "images" of air movement within the measurement volume. The ultrasound-modulated Schlieren imager consists of a strobed point light source, parabolic mirror, light block, and camera, which are controlled by two laptops. It provides a fine-scale projection of the acoustic pulse-modulated air turbulence through the measurement volume. The narrow beam 40 kHz/17 GHz RASS produces spectra based on Bragg-enhanced Doppler radar reflections from the acoustic pulse as it travels. Tests using artificially generated air vortices showed some disruption of the Schlieren image and of the RASS spectrogram. This should allow the higher-resolution Schlieren images to identify the turbulence mechanisms that are disrupting the RASS spectra. The objective of this combined sensor is to have the Schlieren component inform the interpretation of RASS spectra to allow the latter to be used as a stand-alone sensor on a UAV.

Abstract:Arrays of bioinspired artificial hair-cell airflow velocity sensors can enable flight-by-feel of small, unmanned aircraft. Natural fliers - bats, insects, and birds - have hundred or thousands of velocity sensors distributed across their wings. Aircraft designers do not have this luxury due to size, weight, and power constraints. The challenge is to identify the best locations for a small set of sensors to extract relevant information from the flow field for the prediction of flight control parameters. In this paper, we introduce the data-reducing Sparse Sensor Placement Optimization for Prediction algorithm which locates near-optimal sensor placement on airfoils and wings. For two or more sensors this algorithm finds a set of sensor locations (design point) which predicts angle of attack to within 0.10 degrees and ranks within the top 1% of all possible design points found by brute force search. We demonstrate this algorithm on several variations of airfoil sections of infinite and finite wings in clean and noisy data, evaluate model sensitivities, and show that the algorithm can be used to identify an appropriate number of sensors for a given accuracy requirement. Applications for this algorithm are explored for aircraft design and flight-by-feel control.
Neural Network-Based Airflow Vector Sensor Using Multiple MEMS Differential Pressure Sensors

Abstract:As airflow information is significant in various fields, several airflow measurement devices have been developed. Differential pressure (DP)-type sensors, including pitot tubes, are extensively used because they can directly measure dynamic pressure due to airflow. However, this method has a disadvantage in that it is difficult to measure some wind directions because of the non-monotonic pressure distribution around the device. This study proposes a compact sphere airflow vector sensor using a neural network model that compensates for nonmonotonicity. It consists of three built-in microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based DP sensor elements that simultaneously measure the DPs around the spherical sensor housing. The measured DPs are converted into 2D wind speed and direction using a neural network. The network model was trained using the simulated output of each sensor, and it was confirmed that the proposed design guideline contributed to achieving high accuracy. An airflow sensor was fabricated on the basis of the designed model. A network model was trained using the sensor responses in a wind tunnel experiment. The wind speed and direction accuracies obtained by the neural network model for 2–10 m/s and 0°–359° were 0.24 m/s and 3.62°, respectively. Finally, we demonstrated a drone flight test by attaching the calibrated sensor to a toy drone. This study is expected to contribute to realizing highly accurate low airflow measurement devices.

Abstract:Fault detection (FD) plays an important role in guaranteeing system safety and reliability for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This paper focuses on developing an alternative approach to FD for airspeed sensor in UAVs by using data from gyros, accelerometers, global positioning system, and wind vanes. Based on the kinematics model of the UAV, an estimator is proposed to provide analytical redundancy using information from the above-mentioned sensors, which are commonly implemented on UAVs. This filter process is independent of the airspeed measurement and the aircraft dynamics model. Furthermore, we employ the observability rank criterion based on Lie derivatives and prove that the nonlinear system describing the airspeed kinematics is observable. The $\chi ^{2}$ test and cumulative sum detector are employed to detect the occurrence of airspeed measurement faults together. Finally, the performance of the proposed methodology has been evaluated through flight experiments of UAVs.
