Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a complete system for autonomous flight of quadrotors in dynamic environments with onboard sensing. Extended from existing work, we develop an occlusion-aware dynamic perception method based on depth images, which classifies obstacles as dynamic and static. For representing generic dynamic environment, we model dynamic objects with moving ellipsoids and fuse static ones into an occupancy grid map. To achieve dynamic avoidance, we design a planning method composed of modified kinodynamic path searching and gradient-based optimization. The method leverages manually constructed gradients without maintaining a signed distance field (SDF), making the planning procedure finished in milliseconds. We integrate the above methods into a customized quadrotor system and thoroughly test it in real-world experiments, verifying its effective collision avoidance in dynamic environments.

Abstract:Probabilistic direct-methods phasing theory, originally based on a uniform atomic distribution hypothesis, is shown to be adaptable to a non-uniform bulk-solvent-compensated globbic approximation for protein crystals at low resolution. The effective number n(g) of non-H protein atoms per polyatomic glob increases with decreasing resolution; low-resolution phases depend on the positions of only N(g) = N(a)/n(g) globs rather than N(a) atoms. Test calculations were performed with measured structure-factor data and the refined structural parameters from a protein crystal with approximately 10 000 non-H protein atoms per molecule and approximately 60% solvent volume. Low-resolution data sets with d(min) ranging from 15 to 5 A gave n(g) = ad(min) + b, with a = 1.0 A(-1) and b = -1.9 for the test case. Results of tangent-formula phase-estimation trials emphasize that completeness of the low-resolution data is critically important for probabilistic phasing.

Abstract:Sense and avoid capability enables insects to fly versatilely and robustly in dynamic complex environment. Their biological principles are so practical and efficient that inspired we human imitating them in our flying machines. In this paper, we studied a novel bio-inspired collision detector and its application on a quadcopter. The detector is inspired from LGMD neurons in the locusts, and modeled into an STM32F407 MCU. Compared to other collision detecting methods applied on quadcopters, we focused on enhancing the collision selectivity in a bio-inspired way that can considerably increase the computing efficiency during an obstacle detecting task even in complex dynamic environment. We designed the quadcopter's responding operation imminent collisions and tested this bio-inspired system in an indoor arena. The observed results from the experiments demonstrated that the LGMD collision detector is feasible to work as a vision module for the quadcopter's collision avoidance task.
BatMobility: Towards Flying Without Seeing for Autonomous Drones

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) rely on optical sensors such as cameras and lidar for autonomous operation. However, such optical sensors are error-prone in bad lighting, inclement weather conditions including fog and smoke, and around textureless or transparent surfaces. In this paper, we ask: is it possible to fly UAVs without relying on optical sensors, i.e., can UAVs fly without seeing? We present BatMobility, a lightweight mmWave radar-only perception system for UAVs that eliminates the need for optical sensors. BatMobility enables two core functionalities for UAVs -- radio flow estimation (a novel FMCW radar-based alternative for optical flow based on surface-parallel doppler shift) and radar-based collision avoidance. We build BatMobility using commodity sensors and deploy it as a real-time system on a small off-the-shelf quadcopter running an unmodified flight controller. Our evaluation shows that BatMobility achieves comparable or better performance than commercial-grade optical sensors across a wide range of scenarios.

Abstract:Vision plays a crucial role in the ability of compound-eyed insects to perceive the characteristics of their surroundings. Compound-eyed insects (such as the honeybee) can change the optical flow input of the visual system by autonomously controlling their behavior, and this is referred to as visual–motor coordination (VMC). To analyze an insect's VMC mechanism in dynamic scenes, we developed a platform for studying insects that actively shape the optic flow of visual stimuli by adapting their flight behavior. Image-processing technology was applied to detect the posture and direction of insects' movement, and automatic control technology provided dynamic scene stimulation and automatic acquisition of perceptual insect behavior. In addition, a virtual mapping technique was used to reconstruct the visual cues of insects for VMC analysis in a dynamic obstacle scene. A simulation experiment at different target speeds of 1–12 m/s was performed to verify the applicability and accuracy of the platform. Our findings showed that the maximum detection speed was 8 m/s, and triggers were 95% accurate. The outdoor experiments showed that flight speed in the longitudinal axis of honeybees was more stable when facing dynamic barriers than static barriers after analyzing the change in geometric optic flow. Finally, several experiments showed that the platform can automatically and efficiently monitor honeybees' perception behavior, and can be applied to study most insects and their VMC.

Abstract:AbstractAutonomous control of a low-cost micro air vehicle MAV is considered, using a single camera and inertial measurement unit. Integration of loom is used to determine the approximate height during takeoff and landing, and to provide an initial height for hover. Contrary to most optic-flow-based approaches that lack positional feedback, a "snapshot" paradigm is utilized in this paper that takes and stores an image of the ground under the MAV as a reference image, and the position of the vehicle can then be estimated from the transformation of the following images with respect to the reference image so that long-term drift can be contained. In this new work, the implementation of the snapshot algorithm is considered with a focus on real-time performance on a slow processor and the difficulties posed by illumination change and external disturbance. We also extend earlier work with extensive flight experiments conducted in various situations to evaluate the closed-loop performance of the proposed algorithm.
A bio-inspired flying robot sheds light on insect piloting abilities

Abstract:When insects are flying forward, the image of the ground sweeps backward across their ventral viewfield and forms an "optic flow," which depends on both the groundspeed and the groundheight. To explain how these animals manage to avoid the ground by using this visual motion cue, we suggest that insect navigation hinges on a visual-feedback loop we have called the optic-flow regulator, which controls the vertical lift. To test this idea, we built a micro-helicopter equipped with an optic-flow regulator and a bio-inspired optic-flow sensor. This fly-by-sight micro-robot can perform exacting tasks such as take-off, level flight, and landing. Our control scheme accounts for many hitherto unexplained findings published during the last 70 years on insects' visually guided performances; for example, it accounts for the fact that honeybees descend in a headwind, land with a constant slope, and drown when travelling over mirror-smooth water. Our control scheme explains how insects manage to fly safely without any of the instruments used onboard aircraft to measure the groundheight, groundspeed, and descent speed. An optic-flow regulator is quite simple in terms of its neural implementation and just as appropriate for insects as it would be for aircraft.
3D audio-visual recordings of mosquito wings for aeroacoustic simulation

Abstract:Mosquito acoustic communication is studied for its singular and poorly-known in-flight hearing mechanism, for its efficiency in mechanical-to-acoustical power transduction, as well as for being the deadliest disease vector. A combined computational and experimental methods to predict and extract the wing-tone sound from individual tethered or free-flying mosquitoes was developed. This paper describes the experimental methods and gives some preliminary results of the simulations. Simultaneous slow-motion images (20k fps) and 3D-sound of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes were recorded. The sound map around the mosquitoes was recorded in one or two planes with a rotating array of 12-microphones. Backilluminated mosquito-wings allowed to extract 11 veincrossing locations on each high-speed camera image over 3-4 wingbeat periods to generate 3D deformations of the wing. Simultaneous 3D sound data recorded by microphone arrays were post-processed by using the physicsbased independent component analysis to filter out the noise and generate a 3D sound map. The simulated wingtone sound pattern generated from the aeroacoustic simulation agrees well with the original recording in the experiment using the microphone array. The methods we developed will allow us to investigate the wing-tone soundscape of individual mosquitoes during the courtship and mate-chasing.

Abstract:The sky may seem big enough for two flying vehicles to collide, but the facts show that mid-air collisions still occur occasionally and are a significant concern. Pilots learn manual tactics to avoid collisions, such as see-and-avoid, but these rules have limitations. Automated solutions have reduced collisions, but these technologies are not mandatory in all countries or airspaces, and they are expensive. These problems have prompted researchers to continue the search for low-cost solutions. One attractive solution is to use computer vision to detect obstacles in the air due to its reduced cost and weight. A well-trained deep learning solution is appealing because object detection is fast in most cases, but it relies entirely on the training data set. The algorithm chosen for this study is optical flow. The optical flow vectors can help us to separate the motion caused by camera motion from the motion caused by incoming objects without relying on training data. This paper describes the development of an optical flow-based airborne obstacle detection algorithm to avoid mid-air collisions. The approach uses the visual information from a monocular camera and detects the obstacles using morphological filters, optical flow, focus of expansion, and a data clustering algorithm. The proposal was evaluated using realistic vision data obtained with a self-developed simulator. The simulator provides different environments, trajectories, and altitudes of flying objects. The results showed that the optical flow-based algorithm detected all incoming obstacles along their trajectories in the experiments. The results showed an F-score greater than 75% and a good balance between precision and recall.

Abstract:Septicemic Escherichia coli 4787 of porcine origin produces a Prs-like fimbrial antigen, F165(1) which agglutinates sheep erythrocytes in a similar manner to Prs fimbriae, but unlike the latter, also agglutinates pig erythrocytes. In a previous study, we reported the cloning of the f165(1) operon and showed that it encodes a Prs-like adhesin. Here, we report the sequence of the f165(1)A, and f165(1)EFG genes. f165(1)A encodes a protein of 161 amino acids preceded by a signal peptide of 21 amino acids. A size of 19.3 kDa was calculated for the processed F165(1)A protein. The E, F, and G open reading frames potentially give rise to mature proteins of 149, 148 and 313 amino acids respectively. The F165(1)A protein showed significant similarity with the major subunit protein of P-fimbriae of F11 serotype, differing only in four positions. F165(1)E and F165(1)G were found to be closely related to the PrsE and PrsG proteins of Prs-fimbriae variants, whereas F165(1)F was found to be almost completely identical to the F protein of various P and Prs fimbriae. Our results indicated that the f165(1) is a mosaic operon consisting of sequences related to both the pap operon and the prs operon.
Remote-Controlled Monitoring of Flying Pests with an Electrostatic Insect Capturing Apparatus Carried by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to construct an electrostatic insect-capturing apparatus that could be applied to a drone (quadcopter). For this purpose, a double-charged dipolar electric field screen (DD-screen) was constructed using oppositely charged insulator tubes that was then attached to a drone. For charging, the inner surface of the tubes was coated with a conductive paste and then linked to a negative or positive voltage generator. The opposite charges of the tubes formed an electric field between them and created an attractive force to capture insects that entered the field. The DD-screen constructed here was sufficiently light to enable its attachment to a drone. The screen was hung from the drone perpendicular to the direction of drone movement, so as to receive the longitudinal airflow produced by the movement of the drone. It was positioned 1.8 m below the drone body to avoid the influence of the downward slipstream generated by the rotating propellers. Eventually, the drone was able to conduct a stable flight, with sufficient endurance, and captured airborne insects carried by an airflow of 8 m/s during the flight. This study, therefore, provides an experimental basis for establishing a new method for conducting trap-based monitoring of airborne insects during remote-controlled flight through operation of a DD-screen attached to a drone.

Abstract:Nanosize drones hold enormous potential to explore unknown and complex environments. Their small size makes them agile and safe for operation close to humans and allows them to navigate through narrow spaces. However, their tiny size and payload restrict the possibilities for onboard computation and sensing, making fully autonomous flight extremely challenging. The first step toward full autonomy is reliable obstacle avoidance, which has proven to be challenging by itself in a generic indoor environment. Current approaches utilize vision-based or 1-D sensors to support nanodrone perception algorithms. This article presents a lightweight obstacle avoidance system based on a novel millimeter form factor 64 pixels multizone time-of-flight (ToF) sensor and a generalized model-free control policy. In-field tests are based on the Crazyflie 2.1, extended by a custom multizone ToF deck, featuring a total flight mass of 35 g. The algorithm only uses 0.3% of the onboard processing power ( execution time) with a frame rate of 15 f/s. The presented autonomous nanosize drone reaches 100% reliability at 0.5 m/s in a generic and previously unexplored indoor environment.

Touch the Wind: Simultaneous Airflow, Drag and Interaction Sensing on a Multirotor

Abstract:Disturbance estimation for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) is crucial for robustness and safety. In this paper, we use novel, bio-inspired airflow sensors to measure the airflow acting on a MAV, and we fuse this information in an Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to simultaneously estimate the three-dimensional wind vector, the drag force, and other interaction forces (e.g. due to collisions, interaction with a human) acting on the robot. To this end, we present and compare a fully model-based and a deep learning-based strategy. The model-based approach considers the MAV and airflow sensor dynamics and its interaction with the wind, while the deep learning-based strategy uses a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to obtain an estimate of the relative airflow, which is then fused in the proposed filter. We validate our methods in hardware experiments, showing that we can accurately estimate relative airflow of up to 4 m/s, and we can differentiate drag and interaction force.

Abstract:Robust real-time obstacle detection/avoidance is a challenging problem especially for micro and small aerial vehicles due to the limited number of the on-board sensors due to the battery constraint and low payload. Usually lightweight sensors such as CMOS camera are the best choice comparing with laser or radar sensors. For real-time applications, most studies focus on using stereo cameras to reconstruct a 3D model of the obstacles or to estimate their depth. Instead, in this paper, a method that mimics the human behavior of detecting the state of the approaching obstacles using single camera is proposed. During the flight, this method is able to detect the changes of the size area of the obstacles. First, the method detects the feature points of the obstacles, and then extracts the obstacles that has probability of getting close. In addition, by comparing the changes in the area ratios of the obstacle in the image sequence, the method can decide if it is obstacle or not. Finally, by estimating the obstacle 2D position in the image and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV can take the action of avoidance.

Abstract:There are significant challenges associated with the flight control of fixed‐wing micro air vehicles (MAVs) operating in complex environments. The scale of MAVs makes them particularly sensitive to atmospheric disturbances thus limiting their ability to sustain controlled flight. Bio‐inspired, phase‐advanced sensors have been identified as promising sensory solutions for complementing current inertial‐only attitude sensors. This paper describes the development and flight testing of a bio‐inspired, phase‐advanced sensor and associated control system that mitigates the impact of turbulence on MAVs. Multihole pressure probes, inspired by the sensory function of bird feathers, are used to measure the flow pitch angle and velocity magnitude ahead of the MAV's wing. The sensors provide information on the disturbing phenomena before it causes an inertial response in the aircraft. The sensor output is input to a simple feed‐forward control architecture, which enables the MAV to generate a mitigating response to the turbulence. The results from wind‐tunnel and outdoor testing in high levels of turbulence are presented. The disturbance rejection performance of the phase‐advanced sensory system is compared against that of a conventional inertial‐based control system. The developed sensory system shows significant improvement in terms of disturbance rejection performance compared to that of standard inertial‐only control system. It is concluded that a phase‐advanced sensory systems can complement conventional inertial‐based sensors to improve the attitude‐tracking performance of MAVs.

Abstract:Developing multifunctional flying perceptibility, by mimicking the biological system, is meaningful for aircrafts to adapt to the complicated and ambiguous flow environment. In this work, we show that the comprehensive capabilities (skin, synapse, immune system, and brain) of flying creatures can serve as bio-inspirations to develop an intelligent flexible sensing (iFlexSense) skin with similar components, i.e., skin-like mechanosensing, neuron-like data transmission, immune system-like impact monitoring and brain-like artificial intelligence. The iFlexSence skin brings substantial improvements to the aircrafts by the multifunctionalities including airflow perception, state awareness and self-diagnosis of complex surfaces, validated by the wind tunnel tests mounted on a NACA 0012 airfoil, in which it accurately measures the surface pressure, temperature, wall shear stress and flutter, locates the sudden impacts and correctly predicts the occurrence of separation and stall. It shows great potential for future wind tunnel tests and to extend the capabilities of unmanned air vehicles and underwater vehicles.

Abstract:Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) are increasingly being used for complex or hazardous tasks in enclosed and cluttered environments such as surveillance or search and rescue. With this comes the necessity for sensors that can operate in poor visibility conditions to facilitate with navigation and avoidance of objects or people. Radar sensors in particular can provide more robust sensing of the environment when traditional sensors such as cameras fail in the presence of dust, fog or smoke. While extensively used in autonomous driving, miniature FMCW radars on MAVs have been relatively unexplored. This study aims to investigate to what extent this sensor is of use in these environments by employing traditional signal processing such as multi-target tracking and velocity obstacles. The viability of the solution is evaluated with an implementation on board a MAV by running trial tests in an indoor environment containing obstacles and by comparison with a human pilot, demonstrating the potential for the sensor to provide a more robust sense and avoid function in fully autonomous MAVs.

Abstract:Background. Much of the difficulty in helping the homeless mentally ill arises as a consequence of their resistance to engagement. A refused intervention can seldom influence a client's problems and engagement status can be argued as being an important independent predictor of outcome. No instrument could be identified which systematically measured the factors involved. This paper describes the development and psychometric properties of a new scale, the Homeless Engagement and Acceptance Scale (HEAS). Method. Staff from an established project for the homeless mentally ill helped to identify relevant questions used to develop a five-item rating scale for completion by an informant. After piloting, the instrument was tested in a study in which subjects were assessed twice over 12 months by informants. Item analysis was undertaken and predictive validity was assessed. Results. Item analysis indicated a good facility index signifying all items were able to differentiate subjects according to the characteristic being measured, and a high discrimination index demonstrating that all items were measuring the same concept. Predictive validity and internal consistency coefficients were both good. The 3 month HEAS score was found to be a significant predictor of accommodation status and adequacy of a support network at 12 months. Conclusions. The good psychometric properties and predictive validity of the scale suggest the HEAS is likely to be a useful tool in assessing engagement status. One of the five questions (Q4) can be omitted for those who are not homeless and the scale termed the Engagement and Acceptance Scale (EAS).
