Abstract:A novel synchronously mode-locked fiber laser is demonstrated by combining the parametric gain modulation in a pulse-pumped nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) with the soliton shaping property of a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). Parametric gain modulation induced by the synchronous pump pulses within the NOLM starts and defines the timing of the mode-locked signal pulses, while the nonlinear intensity discrimination in the NALM stabilizes the mode-locked pulses and optimizes their shapes. A stream of 1.3 ps transform-limited soliton pulses is generated when the NOLM is pumped by a mode-locked fiber laser. Moreover, we find that the timing jitter of the synchronously mode-locked pulse train is suppressed by more than 10 dB when compared to the pumping laser.

Abstract: We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed dynamic model in this work could contribute to deeper insight of such nonlinear dynamics and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery based on injection mode locking of a fiber ring laser is demonstrated by utilizing a fast semiconductor saturable absorber. The recovered clock is jitter free and completely insensitive to the state of polarization of the injection signal. Moreover, the clock wavelength can be tuned over the whole gain bandwidth of the EDFA.

Abstract:We report a wavelength-tunable clock recovery scheme for all-optical 3R regeneration and simultaneous wavelength conversion. The scheme is based on a fiber-optic parametric oscillator, in which dynamic gain results from the four-wave mixing process in the fiber. In our implementation, 2.9 ps clock pulses are recovered from the incident pseudo-random data stream with the clock wavelength being tunable over the whole erbium-doped-fiber-amplifier bandwidth. RF spectrum measurements show that the recovered clock has less timing jitter than the incident data stream. We also present a two-channel clock recovery experiment, which demonstrates the feasibility of our scheme at 100 Gbit/s data rate.

Abstract:We report a wavelength-tunable all-fiber optical clock recovery scheme that utilizes a fiber parametric oscillator. The data rate in this scheme is limited only by the time response of the Kerr nonlinearity of the fiber, which is in the femtosecond range. As a result, our clock recovery system is expected to be scalable to data rates that are in the Tbps range. In addition, the recovered clock is wavelength tunable over the whole EDFA bandwidth. The key part of our system is a singly resonant fiber-optic parametric oscillator (FOPO) which is pumped by fixed-wavelength pulses. Abstract:We demonstrated a 10-GHz all-optical clock recovery system using an erbium-doped fiber laser that incorporates an electroabsorption modulator and a linear optical amplifier. Stable pulses with peak power of 200 mW and pulsewidth of 6 ps are obtained. The output power and the pulsewidth of the recovered clock pulses are independent of the input data pattern. Stable optical clock can still be observed when the input data rate varies by more than 60% of the fundamental frequency without any optical tunable delay line inside the laser cavity. The scheme is essentially wavelength transparent for the whole C-band which recovers clock pulses from input data wavelength between 1525 and 1565 nm.

Abstract:A novel all-optical pulse shaper based on nonlinear optical loop mirror is proposed in this letter.Control pulse is coupled into this pulse shaper by wavelength division multiplexer.Nonlinear phase shift of signal laser is induced by control pulse because of cross phase modulation.Signal laser interferes in fiber coupler,then shaped signal pulse transmits from output port of this pulse shaper.Signal pulse′s waveform is determined by the profile of the nonlinear phase shift.In this experiment,control pulse is temporary pulse shaped by spectrum shaping and chirped stretching,and single-longitudinal-mode laser is successfully pulse shaped in this all-optical pulse shaper,what′s more,precise synchronization between femtosecond pulse and single-longitudinal-mode shaped pulse is achieved.The output property of this pulse shaper is numerically analyzed in theory,and the results are same as experimental ones.This all-optical pulse shaper provides a potential technical method for fast ignition experiment.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery for the return-to-zero modulation format is demonstrated experimentally at 40 Gbits/s by using an amplified feedback laser. A 40 GHz optical clock with a root-mean-square (rms) timing jitter of 130 fs and a carrier-to-noise ratio of 42 dB is obtained. Also, a 40 GHz optical clock with timing jitter of 137 fs is directly recovered from pseudo-non-return-to-zero signals degraded by polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). No preprocessing stage to enhance the clock tone is used. The rms timing jitter of the recovered clock is investigated for different values of input power and for varying amounts of waveform distortion due to PMD.

Abstract:A novel device with two parallel ridge-width varied distributed feedback (DFB) lasers integrated monolithically with Y-branch waveguide coupler was fabricated by means of butt-joint regrowth. A 22GHz self-pulsation tuning range has been achieved by adjusting independently the driving currents of the two DFB lasers sections. 38.4GHz all-optical clock recovery has been demonstrated for the first time using this device.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-polarization-maintaining (PM) dispersion-managed mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber oscillator based on a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM). Experimentally, three mode-locking regimes with distinct tailored spectra are achieved with carefully designed cavity setup and adjusted pump power. Using the dispersive Fourier transformation (DFT) technique, the real-time transition dynamics among these regimes are observed as the pump power decreases. It is revealed that the intracavity gain does not decrease continuously during the relaxation period of the gain fiber. Instead, it decreases first and then increases, ultimately leading to the overdriving of NALM. This is attributed to the increase in the population inversion rate of gain fiber under the remaining pump. The dynamic evolution of intracavity gain and non-monotonic transmission properties of NALM collectively induce chaotic pulsation during the transformation. This work not only provides a new perspective for the design and development of novel spectrum-tailored laser sources, but also deepens the understanding of the transient dynamics of ultrafast fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate 40 Gb/s all-optical clock recovery by using a monolithic integrated amplified-feedback laser (AFL) with coherent injection-locked method. The AFL consists of a gain-coupled DFB laser and an optical amplified feedback external cavity. With proper design and operation of AFL, the device can work at self-pulsation state that resulted from the beating between two lasing modes. The self-pulsation can be injection-locked to the optical clock embedded in input data streams. Due to different work mechanisms, there are two all-optical clock recovery operation modes: incoherent injection-locked and coherent injection-locked. It's predicted that the coherent injection method has various advantages: 1) requiring low injection power recovery, 2) independent of the bit rate and 3) introducing little timing jitter to the recovered clock. The robustness of coherent clock recovery is confirmed by our experimental results. We set up a return-to-zero (RZ) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) data streams all-optical clock recovery system. This coherent injection-locked based clock recovery method is optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion (CD) degeneration tolerant, and has low timing jitter and high sensitivity.

Abstract:A novel scheme for all-optical clock component enhancement and clock-to-data suppression of 10 Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) code based on the effect of gain saturation, chirp induced by semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The clock enhancement and 12.9 dB clock-to-data enhancement are achieved after semiconductor optical amplifier and chirped fiber Bragg grating. The transmitted clock is recovered based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) from the enhanced signal. This clock recovery scheme has the advantage of transparence to data rate and modulation format, low clock jitter, and non-influence of pattern dependence.

Abstract:An arbitrary pulse shape by compensating gain saturation in a solid-state Master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system made up of three Neodymium doped yttrium vanadate (Nd:YVO4) amplifiers is demonstrated. By investigating the amplifier dynamics in detail, car-shaped pulse shapes were obtained with compensated pulse distortion. Desired pulse shapes, such as multiple-step, square, parabolic, and Gaussian pulses, were achieved, with a high peak power level of 41.6 kW and a narrow linewidth less than 0.06 nm. In addition, through second harmonic generation (SHG), a green laser with different pulse shapes was obtained, with a maximum conversion efficiency of 42.6%.

Abstract:Summary form only given. The optical period-doubling behavior is a nonlinear phenomenon observed in the laser with periodical modulation and saturated absorption. Recently, the semiconductor laser amplifier in loop mirror (SLALOM) has been extensively investigated as an ultrahigh-speed optical switch. Employing the SLALOM as an optical modulator, a mode-locked fiber laser has been demonstrated to generate a high-speed periodically optical pulse sequence for optical clock recovery. We present that optical period-doubling sequence which can be implemented in a fiber laser with a SLALOM with the low bias current of the SLA and a high optical power in the laser cavity. It has the potential applications in optical clock division. Comparatively, an optical periodical sequence has also been realized in this laser with the high bias current of the SLA and a low optical power in the laser cavity.

Abstract:We demonstrated 40 GHz all-optical clock recovery system using an erbium-doped fiber laser that incorporates a 10 GHz electro-absorption modulator and a linear optical amplifier. We successful recovered 40 GHz clock signals from a 40 Gb/s pseudo random bit sequences. Stable pulses with pulsewidth of 6 ps and timing jitter of 300 fs are obtained.

Abstract:An improved three-wave-coupling model of optical parametric chirped pulse amplification(OPCPA) including the effects of phase mismatching,pulse temporal profile and synchronization-time jitter was presented in this paper.With the model,we investigated and compared the effect of synchronization-time jitter on the gain stability of OPCPA in small signal amplification regime and in saturation regime respectively.The results show that in the case of one nanosecond synchronization-time jitter,the jitter shifts the amplified signal gain spectrum obviously,leads to pulse profile asymmetry and decreases the gain overall.The broader signal spectrum will aggravate the influence of jitter on parametric gain.However,when the parametric amplification is saturated,the impact of jitter upon output intensity of signal pulse is weakened.It is concluded that better output gain stability can be achieved in the optical parametric saturated amplification.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the realization of a half-polarization-maintaining (half-PM) fiber laser, in which mode-locking is provided by a reflective multimode-interference saturable absorber (SA). In the specially designed SA, linearly polarized light is coupled into a 15-cm-long graded-index multimode fiber (GIMF) through the PM fiber, and then reflected back to the PM structure through a mirror pigtailed with a single-mode fiber (SMF). The modulation depth and saturation peak power are measured to be 1.5 % and 0.6 W, respectively. The proposed SA device is incorporated into a novel half-PM erbium-doped fiber oscillator, which generates soliton pulses with 409 fs temporal duration at a 33.3 MHz repetition rate. The proposed fiber laser is compared to a conventional non-PM fiber laser mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) in terms of essential optical properties such as the spectral bandwidth, pulse duration, and stability performance. Short- and long-time stability tests and superior noise performance corroborate robust mode-locking in this setup.
