Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental results of the half-wave-coupled rectangular ring-FP laser. All the waveguides of the device are active, and the thermooptic effect is employed to extend the tuning range beyond the free-spectral-range limit. Singleelectrode tuning of 20 channels with 100-GHz spacing is obtained. By combining five single-electrode-controlled tuning curves with different bias currents on fixed electrodes and with the thermoelectric cooler fixed at 20 °C, wavelength tuning of 50 channels with 100-GHz spacing covering the L-band is achieved with a side-mode suppression ratio up to 41 dB. Direct modulation at 2.5 Gb/s is also demonstrated. The simple and compact ring-FP laser has great potential as a low-cost tunable laser for many applications.

Abstract:While the space between the channels of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) system is narrower, the various of equipments are needed to have the more precise frequencies and more frequency stability. The research of frequency standard in 1.5mum region becomes one of hot orientations in optical communication area. In this paper, frequency lock method of semiconductor lasers has been analyzed. In order to provide multiple ITU wavelengths reference for DWDM applications, a novel Fabry-Perot (F-P) filter frequency stabilization control system is presented. A frequency stabilized fiber Bragg grating (FBG) external cavity laser diode (ECLD) using acetylene (C2H2) has been fabricated. With lock-in amplifier and the FBG ECLD stabilized by absorption of CH, as the reference, one transmission peak of Fabry-Perot inserted in the external cavity is locked at a 1530.3nm peak of C,H, to keep all its transmission peaks stable. Such that the F-P filter with 100GHz spacing generates a stable and precise wavelength comb, provides a set of ITU standard at 1.55mum wavelength band. Our setup is useful for frequency lock-in or frequency measurement and calibration and is promising for DWDM communication system.

Abstract:We report our latest experimental results of the half-wave coupled rectangular ring-FP laser. Single-electrode-controlled wavelength switching over 14 channels with 200GHz spacing is demonstrated with side-mode-suppression-ratio (SMSR) up to 37dB. And the total device size is only 0.5×0.4 mm2.
External Cavity Diode Laser with Long-Term Frequency Stabilization Based on Mode Boundary Detection

Abstract:We have implemented a long-term frequency stabilization system for external cavity diode laser (ECDL) based on mode boundary detection method. In this system, the saturated absorption spectroscopy was used. The current and the grating of the ECDL were controlled by a computer-based feedback control system. By checking any mode boundaries in the spectrum, the control system determined how to adjust current to avoid mode hopping. This procedure was executed periodically to ensure the long-term stabilization of ECDL in the absence of mode hops. This laser diode system without antireflection-coating had over operated in the condition of long-term mode hopping free stabilization for almost 400 hours. Last year, we have added template matching technics to the system. The ECDL stabilization time has been extended to almost 1200 hours without any manual intervention further. This is a significant improvement of ECDL frequency stabilization system. This technique is very useful in some applications such as laser atomic cooling and atom fountain etc.

Abstract:The design principle of 894 nm external cavity laser diode with Littrow configuration was introduced. The calculation on optimized grating mount pivot point position was given. Analysis of the mode-hop-free range versus practical pivot point position as well as the reasonable pivot point position were pointed. By frequency selection of external cavity and application of low noise current driver, low temperature drift controller and low noise piezo driver, single mode operation of the laser at 894 nm was realized on a laser diode with a free running wavelength of 904 nm, which was to be applied in laser pumped Cesium magnetometer. The mode-hop-free range was above 3 GHz. It could be seen from the confocal FP cavity that the laser linewidth was effectively narrowed in the external cavity. In order to obtain Cs D 1 spectrum, a saturation absorption spectroscopy layout was built and the hyperfine lines spectrum of F=3->F'=3, 4 and F=4->F'=3, 4 transition were successfully obtained.

Abstract:A fast and wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) utilizing the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique, integrated with 24 DFB lasers, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Additionally, a high-speed FBG sensing system using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is proposed and demonstrated, achieving stable high-speed sweeping with a wavelength coverage of 50.4 nm and a sweeping frequency of up to 5.85 kHz without mode hopping. The FBG sensing system has a solid-state design without moving parts, enabling real-time, high-speed, and stable monitoring of temperature, pressure, strain, and displacement. Furthermore, the system is cost-effective and anticipated to have diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:We report a high-power ultra-narrow fiber-coupled diode laser using a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) as an external cavity element. An external cavity suitable for both the fiber-coupled package and FADOF configuration has been proposed. Using a 87 Rb-based FADOF as the frequency-selective element, we realized a 103 W continuous laser output with a uniform circular beam. The center wavelength was precisely locked at the D 2 line of the Rb resonance, and the bandwidth was narrowed from 1.8 nm (free-running, full width at half maximum (FWHM)) to 0.013 nm (6.9 GHz, FWHM). The side mode suppression ratio reached 31 dB. Such diode lasers with precise wavelength and high spectral brightness have critical applications in many fields, such as high-energy gas laser pumping, spin-exchange optical pumping, Raman spectroscopy and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:A high-resolution strain/temperature sensing system based on a fiber Bragg grating-Fabry-Perot cavity (FBG-FPC) and a wavelength-swept single-longitudinal-mode laser diode (modulated by a sawtooth signal) is proposed. The high-finesse (~627) FBG-FPC formed by two uniform FBGs of high reflectivity (~99.5%) is used both as a strain/temperature sensor and a FPC with ultranarrow (~0.12 pm) transmission bands. Using a photodetector to detect the transmissive light of the laser diode through the FBG-FPC, wavelength demodulation is achieved by mapping wavelength measurement to time measurement. Both strain sensing and temperature sensing with a resolution of 0.11 muepsiv and 0.014degC, respectively, have been demonstrated.

Abstract:We demonstrated a mode-hop-free external cavity laser (ECL) design incorporating a semiconductor gain chip and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with enhanced thermal sensitivity. The compact ECL features a narrow linewidth of 35 kHz and a high linear thermal tuning velocity of 65 pm/°C (8.125 GHz/°C), which is six times higher than that of normal FBG-based ECLs.

Abstract:The tunable distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor lasers with cascaded configuration were designed and fabricated using equivalent phase shift (EPS) technique. 32-wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channels with 50-GHz and 100-GHz wavelength spacing were experimentally demonstrated. In such a tunable laser, single mode operation can be ensured by introducing EPS and the wavelength tuning can be realized by cascaded sections with specific sampling periods combining with chip heating. The proposed approach has some advantages such as good single mode property, low fabrication cost and feasibility of monolithic integration. The experimental results show that the tuning range can be nearly up to 25nm and the side mode suppression ratios (SMSRs) of most channels are above 40dB. The proposed laser should be promising for cost-effective applications in WDM systems.

Abstract:In this paper, effective multiplexing for a very large number of FBG-based Fabry-Perot (FBGFP) sensors is proposed, which is based on combination of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and spatial-frequency division multiplexing (SFDM). For WDM, FBGFP sensors are arranged in different wavelength domains formed by a series of chirped FBGs with different central wavelengths while the sensors with different cavity lengths within the same wavelength domain are multiplexed by using SFDM as they have different spatial frequencies resulted from different cavity lengths. The experimental results show that a strain accuracy of better than ± 10μe has been achieved with little cross-talk.

Abstract:We present a four-channel ultrafast wavelength-swept distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser array based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique using instantaneous injection current modulation. With the aid of our designed laser driving circuit system consists of the microcontroller unit (MCU), field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and negative metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (n-MOSFETs), the precise pulse driving current for the 4-channel wavelength-swept REC-DFB laser array can be generated and a fast tuning of 16.424 nm within 10 μs is achieved. To further investigate the tuning performance of the proposed wavelength-swept laser source, we then applied it to the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation system and four FBG temperature sensor arrays were successfully demodulated. The development of high-efficient optical sensing systems heavily relies on the significance of the ultrafast wavelength-swept laser source, which has the potential to greatly enhance FBG interrogator performance in the future.

Abstract:The ongoing growth of data traffic from existing and new latency-sensitive applications poses a challenge to the data center network. Wavelength-routed optical circuit switching promises high bandwidth, low power and latency networking for data centers, but requires a wideband wavelength tunable source capable of nanosecond-scale hitless wavelength switching at every node. A tunable source based on DFB laser arrays is a potential candidate due to the high-speed dynamic property and high single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) stability of the DFB laser. However, the large-scale integration of the DFB laser and the high precision control of the lasing wavelength are still problems. In this work, we proposed and fabricated a monolithic integrated 16-channel DFB laser array with high SLM stability and 100-GHz channel spacing by using the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. The maximum output power of each channel was above 6 mW. Based on the custom-designed fast switching drive board with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the switch-ON and OFF time between any pair of channel combinations were measured at less than 10 ns. Dynamic switching wavelengths remained stable and resided within the receiver bandwidth. Wavelength switching experiments for modulated light signals were done by driving the external modulator, achieving bit error performance at 1 x 10(-9) for 10 Gb/s NRZ data.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a high performance four-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL), enabled by a figure-8 compound-ring-cavity (F8-CRC) filter for single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) selection and a polarization-managed four-channel filter (PM-FCF) for defining four lasing wavelengths. We introduce a novel methodology utilizing signal-flow graph combined with Mason's rule to analyze a CRC filter in general and apply it to obtain the important design parameters for the F8-CRC filter used in this paper. By combining the functions of the F8-CRC filter and the PM-FCF filter assisted by the enhanced polarization hole-burning and polarization dependent loss, we achieve the EDFL with fifteen lasing states, including four single-, six dual-, four tri- and one quad-wavelength lasing operations. In particular, all the four single-wavelength operations are in stable SLM oscillation, typically with a linewidth of <600 Hz, a RIN of <=-154.58 dB/Hz@>=3 MHz and an output power fluctuation of <=+/-3.45%. In addition, all the six dual-wavelength operations have very similar performances, with the performance parameters close to those of the single-wavelength lasing operations. Finally, we achieve the wavelength spacing tuning of the dual-wavelength operations for the photonic generation of tunable microwave signals, and successfully obtain a signal at 23.10 GHz as a demonstration.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a four-wavelength-switchable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) narrow linewidth thulium-holmium co-doped fiber laser (THDFL) using two polarization-dependent parallel fiber Bragg gratings (PD-PFBGs). The PD-PFBGs, fabricated using femtosecond (fs) laser direct-writing technology in a standard single-mode fiber (SMF) via a point-by-point method, are used as a four-channel reflection filter. Two FBGs are inscribed in parallel in the fiber core along the axial direction and are uniquely positioned symmetrically on either side of the centerline. This configuration enables polarization-dependent multi-channel filtering capability, which further allows for polarization-control-based four-wavelength-switchable operations of the THDFL. SLM lasing is accomplished by utilizing a simple dual-ring sub-cavity filter. An exceptional output performance of the THDFL is achieved, including an optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of >72 dB, maximum power and wavelength fluctuations of 0.350 dB and 0.024 nm, respectively, and a linewidth of <2 kHz, for all four single-wavelength operations lasing at ∼2000 nm. These performance indicators suggest that the THDFL can be applied in free-space optical communication, atmospheric monitoring, and Lidar.

Abstract:<p>A narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber laser based on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fabricated was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A pair of FBGs with reflectivity of 92% and 10%, respectively, at the center wavelength of 1580 nm were inscribed in standard SMF-28 fibers without hydrogen loading by femtosecond laser point-by-point directly writing method, which was used as mirrors for wavelength selection of fiber laser, gratings full width at half maximum (FWHM) was less than 0.15 nm. A simple linear-cavity fiber laser was realized based on gain medium, pump source and FBGs. When gain medium of Er-doped fiber is selected 8 m, a stable single wavelength of 1579 nm laser with a 3 dB linewidth of 0.06 nm was obtained. Its output power is 24.1 mW when the maximum pump power is 600 mA, and its single wavelength of 1579 nm is consistent with the central wavelength of the fabricated FBGs. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry and high resolution fiber sensor systems.</p>

Abstract:Fiber bragg gratings (FBG) has wide variety of applications in sensor and laser devices. In this work, we have fabricated FBG using point by point (PbP) technique utilizing fs laser. FBGs spectral characteristics were explored through the variation of grating length, fiber holder position, laser power and coated layer. Fs FBG is fabricated on small mode field diameter fiber which shows enhancement of transmission depth to 2.5 dB. The center wavelength shift is observed from 1520 nm to 1568 nm with the change in translational stage speed. The fs FBGs can be utilized in high pressure sensing, high temperature sensing and hazardous environment monitoring purposes.

Abstract:The mode-selecting principle of a F-P interferometer and the experiments on the mode selection and mode-locking of a laser diode with an external F-P interferometric cavity were demonstrated and reported for the first time. The static and dynamic single internal-mode operation was realized by using a PZT to adjust the interval of the F-P interferometer. The nearly transform-limited Gaussian pulses with a repetition rate of 656 MHz and pulse width of 13ps were obtained. The time-bandwidth product is 0.46. Finally, the effect of a F-P interferometer on the lasing mode of diode lasers was also discussed.
