Abstract:Plane-pair partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) (PPP) is a faster analytical method for calculating the impedance properties of plane-pairs PDN structure. In this paper, PPP method is employed to simulate the loop inductance of multi-slots plane-pair structure. The influence of slots fill area ratio on loop inductance is studied. The experimental work is carried out and the results agree well with the simulated ones.

Abstract:One enhanced conformal FDTD method is proposed for characterizing transient responses of arbitrary PEC wedges illuminated by an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), and one low-cost modified technique is introduced for effectively suppressing numerical dispersion error with much high accuracy achieved. Excellent agreement is also obtained between our captured diffraction field of the wedge and that of uniform theory of diffraction (UTD). Further, numerical investigation is performed for predicting the EMP responses of PEC wedges with different geometries, different incident EMP directions and different observation points, etc. We would like to say that this study will be useful for the design of EMC and electromagnetic protection for ship or aircraft platform.
Time Domain Integral Equation Method Using FFT-based Marching-on-in-degree Method for Analyzing PEC Patches on Substrate (Invited)

Abstract:One time domain method, based on the TDIE solved by the marching-on-in-degree (MOD) scheme, is presented in this paper for capturing transient electromagnetic responses of dielectric-metallic composite structures. For perfect electrically conducting (PEC) surfaces patched on the dielectric substrate, the time-domain electric field integral equations (TD-EFIE) is used to analyze PEC patch, while PMCHW (Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington and Wu) integral equation is utilized for describing the dielectric substrate. The whole set of integral equations is solved simultaneously, and the temporal basis function is chosen to be the Laguerre polynomials (LP), which is called marching-on-in-degree scheme. For the spatial basis function, the classical RWG basis function is usually the suitable choice. Since in the right-hand-side of the iteration equation, during the matrix-vector multiplication, the impedance matrix has the form of Toeplitz matrix, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) can be used to accelerate this multiplication. Numerical results are given to demonstrate our proposed method used for analyzing characteristics of structures containing PEC patch on the substrate.

Abstract:A procedure to include conductor loss in interdigital capacitor based dielectric constant measurements is proposed. The effect of conductor loss and contact resistance can be regarded as a series resistor connected to the interdigital capacitor. If the thickness of the conductor film is known, the conductor loss could be calculated and subtracted from the measurement results. In the frequency range where the dielectric constant of the material in test does not change with frequency, the conductor loss could also be obtained by measuring the frequency dependence of the impedance of the interdigital capacitor. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:A hybrid FDTD method based on conformal FDTD is proposed. Both PEC and dielectric conformal schemes are applied for the same calculation area, with one low-cost coefficient modifying technique introduced for suppressing numerical dispersion error with very high accuracy achieved. Such hybrid FDTD method is applied for dealing with electromagnetic scattering problems of wedges composed of PEC and dielectric material. Our numerical results are compared with that of hybrid moment method/physical optics (MM/PO) technique, with excellent agreement obtained. Further, some composite wedges with different geometries, different incident EMP directions are considered for both TE and TM cases, respectively. It is believed that our work is very useful for solving some typical electromagnetic scattering problems.

Abstract:This article introduces an efficient method for the equivalent circuit characterization and full-wave analysis of microstrip structures, leveraging the full-wave partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC). In particular, the multilayered Green's function is evaluated using the discrete complex-image method (DCIM) and employed to establish the mixed potential integral equations. The proposed strategy considers time delays for the retarded electric and magnetic couplings, offering a new efficient full-wave approach to extract equivalent circuit components, which encapsulate the contributions of the quasi-static, surface-wave, and complex images. It is noted that the proposed full-wave PEEC strategy allows each component contribution derived from DCIM to be efficiently represented as frequency-independent lumped circuit elements and corresponding frequency factors, thereby simplifying the extraction process of the entire frequency-dependent lumped elements in the traditional PEEC method. Moreover, the proposed PEEC model, equipped with full-wave equivalent circuits, offers clear physical insight into electromagnetic behaviors, thereby facilitating design and optimization. Finally, the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed PEEC model are fully demonstrated through various examples and experiments.

Abstract:To calculate the scattering from thin dielectric-coated perfect electric conductor (PEC) surfaces, the impedance boundary conditions (IBC) and thin dielectric sheet (TDS) approximation are quite powerful in integral equation method because both remove the need to solve the field in dielectric layer. However, the rigid validation criteria restrict the application scope of IBC method. Although the TDS approximation removes physical restrictions by basing on the rigorous integral formulation, only electric material coating have been considered in available literatures. This paper gives an introduction of our progress in the calculation for dielectric-coated PEC surfaces with thin dielectric approximation, including the hybrid PEC-dielectric formulations to deal with the coating with electric and magnetic materials; the multi-layer TDS approximation to analyze coatings with relatively large thickness; the utilization of phase extracted basis functions for electrically large and smooth PEC coatings and some special treatments near the edges to account for the singularity currents for open PEC surfaces.

Abstract:Recent FPGAs and CPUs consume significant power, and a low impedance power distribution network (PDN) is critical to get a robust performance. The decoupling capacitors in package usually provide charge for mid frequency switching currents, from tens of MHz to a few hundreds of MHz. The effectiveness of these capacitors are limited by the inductance associated with the current loop. Although commercial tools can estimate the PDN impedance, they do not generate a physics-based circuit which provides insight of where the inductance collects. In this short paper, a plane pair partial element equivalent circuit (PPP) method is applied to extract the inductance of the power layers on package. The method is validated by comparing with the cavity model and a commercial tool. The extracted inductance can be used to generate a physics based circuit model.

Abstract:This paper extends PEEC method for fast-accurate electromagnetic analysis of RF-MEMS spiral inductors. By introducing electrical boundary conditions into PEEC,the capacitance matrix is extended to include 3D-substrate coupling. With equivalent of charges in interface, Green functions in uniform dielectric regions can be used in calculation. By using proper mesh size and considering retardation times, the precision of PEEC can be maintained even in tough cases. These improvements reduce the analysis complexity and calculation time.The numeric results show good agreement with published measurement data.

Abstract:In this paper, the multi-layer TDS (thin dielectric sheet) integral equation approach is first proposed. This method divides the geometric model into multiple thin layers and assumes the flux density to be constant with respect to the normal direction within each layer. Consequently, the number of unknowns is significantly reduced while the precision of the results could be maintained. Then, the multi-layer TDS integral approach is combined with the PEC (perfect electric conductor) boundary conditions together to handle scattering from dielectric coated PEC objects. This new procedure simplifies the coupled surface (for the conductor)-volume (for dielectric) integral to a surface-surface integral with much fewer unknowns. Furthermore, a remedy approach is also presented in this paper to improve the deteriorated precision for open composed structures due to the significant singular currents near the boundary edges. Compared with traditional PEC-TDS methods, the method presented in this paper can deal with scattering from thick or stratified coatings with arbitrarily lateral or normal inhomogeneity. Its improvement is also capable of handling dielectric coatings on open PEC surfaces. The numerical results at the end show good agreement with the references, showing the accuracy and the validity of these solutions.

Abstract:The evaluation of electromagnetic parasitics is important for electromagnetic interference within power electronics systems. Simple yet accurate physics-based lumped-circuit models of these parasitics can facilitate fast analysis and better understanding of the system performance. Methods exist to reduce complex electromagnetic models to much simpler representations but, while they speed up calculation, they do not preserve physicality. In this paper, a methodology is developed for obtaining a simplified SPICE circuit from a large-scale partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model, where there is a clear correlation between geometry and parasitic circuit elements. To preserve correlation between equivalent circuits and physical geometry, reduction is done first for inductance and resistance; then, reduction is performed for capacitance using nodes from the reduced LR model. The reduced model gives a better insight into the causes of and possible solutions to electromagnetic problems and can be used to improve the design. The method was validated on real power electronics geometries using frequency-dependent behavior of port impedances and admittances. The initial PEEC model for this example contained approximately 10 645 unknowns and was reduced to 195 elements. The calculated and measured impedances agree within 0.1 dB up to 200 MHz.

Abstract:Dog-bone structure has been widely used in package PDN, yet it has not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, the associated inductance for the dog-bone structure is studied with the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) method and CST. PEEC method is based on the electrical field integral equation (EFIE) and it serves as a bridge between electromagnetic problems and circuit ones. In this paper, the detailed geometry of the dog-bone structure in packages is discussed, the geometrical features of the inductance associated with the dog-bone structure are described. Besides, this paper also compares the inductance of the dog-bone structure with and without ground planes, which illustrates the effectiveness of the plane size to the total inductance of the dog-bone structure.

Abstract:In this paper, the plane-pair partial element equivalent circuit method coupled with the field equivalence principle is developed and applied to calculate the radiated fields of multilayer power planes. The proposed method can be used to solve near-field and far-field radiation problems for multilayer parallel-plane structures with decoupling capacitors. The proposedmethod is validated by full-wave simulation and experiment. In addition, the proposed method achieves ten times higher computational efficiency than the full-wave simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, the recently proposed multi-layer TDS approximation is combined with the boundary conditions on PEC surface to handle the electromagnetic scattering from dielectric coated PEC objects. The current model is further simplified and the computing unknowns are dramatically reduced. The efficiency and accuracy are confirmed with a couple of numerical examples.

Abstract:The fast multipole method (FMM) and multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA) are successfully developed to solve electrically very large sized perfectly electric conducting (PEC) objects. Using the impedance boundary conditions (IBC) the integral equations can be simplified and solved for wave problems involving imperfectly conducting surfaces. Thus, the algorithm is firstly implemented and verified by comparing with the exact analytical solution for a PEC sphere, and then extended for imperfectly conducting (thin material coating) objects and verified with the analytical solution. Subsequently, it has been applied to an aircraft model with both PEC and material coating surface the results and compared.

Abstract:An extension of the partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for lossy magnetic medium in frequency domain is developed and verified with a magnetically enhanced planar inductive device in this paper. The magnetic material cell is firstly represented using a distribution of equivalent conductive current source, polarized current source, magnetized current source and polarized charge source according to volume equivalence principle. Then the external port impedance matrix formula of a PEEC network is derived. In order to simplify the original complex PEEC network, a model order reduction method based on generalized eigenvalue theory is adopted. A 3-D electromagnetic PEEC model of a magnetically enhanced planar inductor are set up and tested as an example. A good agreement between the PEEC simulation and measurements is presented up to 200 MHz.

Abstract:This paper presents a PEEC model of thin-wire structures for lightning grounding analysis based on low-frequency approximation of dyadic Green's functions. To avoid the time-consuming numerical Sommerfeld integrals, the primary and quasi-dynamic terms are extracted from the spectral-domain Green's function and used as the low-frequency approximation closed-form of the full-wave solution, which is appropriate in the near-field region. The corresponding equivalent circuit is constructed with this closed-form approximated Green's function and the formulas for the partial inductance and coefficient of potential is given. Comparison in terms of the Green's function and circuit parameters between the proposed method and the conventional modified-image method is made. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed with experimental results gathered from published literature and MOM-calculated results from other researchers. A systematic parametric analysis is conducted to evaluate the accuracy and applicability of the different approximate models, which clearly shows the superiority of the proposed method over the traditional modified-image method.

Abstract:This paper presents an efficient modeling technique for analyzing the characteristic impedance of high-speed circuit based on the integral equation method.The method is presented in consideration of the specific power/ground(PG) plane structure,and is able to accurately model the 3-D electromagnetic field problem in the substrate by using a 2-D model,which significantly decreases the computing time.The proposed method does not require to obtain the specific Green function of the power/ground planes,therefore it can be applied for arbitrarily shaping PG planes.The paper also presents the simulated results of the PG planes impedance with the effects of dielectric material property εr,and lossy tanδ as well as the geometric factor.The results can be applied in high-speed circuit design.
