Abstract:Transparent optical signal regeneration is demonstrated using a nonlinear bistable distributed-feedback/Fabry-Perot (DFB/FP) structure, which has a high switching contrast (>40 : 1), fast recovery time (4 ns) and low threshold power (2 mW).

Abstract:We report the experimental observation of optical bistable switching in a combined distributed-feedback/Fabry–Perot structure. The sample had a high switching contrast with almost zero reflectivity in the on-state. A turnoff time as short as 4 ns was measured. The threshold power for bistability was about 2 mW. Bistable switching with the memory effect and a potential application for all-optical signal regeneration were demonstrated.

Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.

Abstract:Preliminary experimental results are reported on application demonstration of an optical nonlinear bistable element based on a semiconductor multilayered distributed-feedback/Fabry-Perot (DFB/FP) structure. A proof-of-concept of optical clock recovery and transparent self-routeing (all-optical self-switching) was demonstrated. The results confirmed the device's promising for applications in transparent fibre-optic telecommunications networks.

Abstract:Numerical simulations and experimental results are reported on bistable switching in a semiconductor nonlinear vertical Bragg reflector. An improved structure with an additional linear rear mirror and a phase-adjusting layer was predicted to have lower threshold for bistability than a Fabry–Perot type device. The experimental observation of bistable switching in a nonlinear Bragg reflector is reported. Achieved threshold was comparable with a nonlinear Fabry–Perot device; the simpler structure of a nonlinear Bragg device may represent an advantage with respect to growth tolerances.

Abstract:We demonstrate a new optical bistability devise by using two Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), in which an erbium-doped fiber (EDF) is inserted to form a nonlinear Fabry–Perot cavity (EDF FBG/F–P). The operation principle of this device is described by the resonant nonlinearity theory combining with the transfer matrix method. The optical bistability behaviors under different parameters are investigated. It shows that EDF FBG/F–P device has an evident merit in reducing the threshold switching power to 7mW, resulting in a reduction about 6 orders, compared with that of single FBG device. Moreover, the ultra-fast response time about 35ps is also confirmed.

Abstract:Dynamic birefringence of the linear optical amplifier (LOA) is theoretically and experimentally investigated. Significant nonlinear variations of the state of polarization with the input power and bias current of the LOA have been found. Based on this nonlinear change of the state of polarization, an all-optical 2R regenerator is demonstrated. Under static operation, an extinction ratio (ER) improvement of 15 dB has been obtained for an input ER of 5 dB. With a degraded input signal, a receiver sensitivity improvement of over 3 dB at a bit-error rate (BER) of 10-9 has been found for 2.5 Gb/s. For 10 Gb/s, zero power penalty is observed. Significant improvements of ER for both 2.5 and 10 Gb/s are obtained.

Abstract:Experimental 2R regeneration characteristics of an optical decision circuit based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with gain clamped semiconductor optical amplifiers in both arms are reported for the first time. The decision circuit gives a true regeneration, i.e., a digital characteristic on a linear instead of a logarithmic (or dB) scale for the input and/or output power.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery and data regeneration are simultaneously achieved by use of a single fiber-optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) with idler feedback control circuit for the first time. A return-to-zero (RZ) 3R regeneration is experimentally demonstrated by optimizing the operating parameters of the FOPO. Experimental results show that the performance of extinction ratio and timing jitter for the regenerated signal are improved in terms of transfer function slopes of 1.9 and 0.16, respectively, and the maximal receiver sensitivity improvement is up to 3.42dB.

Abstract:An all-optical multilevel amplitude regenerator is optimized based on the transmission response of a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM). Three regenerative regions defined by the power-transfer function (PTF) slope of less than 1 are obtained, and noise suppression is shown for a PAM4 signal. Using amplitude dithering we were able to experimentally characterize the transfer function slope and confirm the theoretical predictions.

The optical bistable characteristics are simulated. The feedback nonlinearity and the delay time of the device are emphasized. We discuss the potential of such a device in sensor applications.

Abstract:An all-optical 2R regeneration based on self-induced polarization rotation in a single semiconductor optical amplifier is presented. A theoretical model is built up to simulate the system performance. Experiment evidence is also provided. An extinction ratio improvement of 8.3 dB is obtained at a bit-rate of 10 Gbit/s. In the BER measurements, 6 dB improvement of the power penalty is achieved, clearly demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed scheme. Our approach has a simple structure, and allows photonic integration.

Abstract:Several schemes on all-optical signal regeneration in optical switching nodes are compared.The clock extraction experiments using fiber optical parametric oscillator(FOPO) and magneto-optical four-wave mixing(MO-FWM) 2R regeneration are analyzed.The principle of the idler-power-based feedback control technique to effectively enhance the stability of the FOPO for clock extraction is illustrated in terms of the experimental data.The power transfer characteristics of four FWM-based regeneration schemes are simulated and the MO-FWM-based regeneration experiment is implemented by using clock pump and idler filtering.It is shown that,the receiver sensitivity is further improved by 2 dB when the direct current(DC) magnetic field of 180 Gs is applied along the high nonlinear fiber.It is also pointed out that all-optical regeneration technologies trend to the evolution of multi-channel and integration from a long-term point of view.

Abstract:We demonstrate simultaneous self-phase-modulation-based 2R regeneration of 2 x 10.65-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) signals using a single section of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Mitigation of inter-channel nonlinearities is achieved through a bidirectional configuration, rejecting of backward Stimulated Brillouin Scattering noise is obtained by signal re-polarizing before the offset filter and putting the center wavelength of filter at the short wavelength side of the signal. The power penalty improvement up to 2.0 dB for two PDM signals at 10(-9) BER is achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate that an optical regenerator architecture providing re-amplification, re-shaping, and re-timing based on the principle of spectral shift followed by filtering can lead to bit error ratio improvement of the signal passing through it. This is in contrast with typical regenerators based on the usual principle of power conversion from a transfer function, which are unable to improve the bit error ratio. At first, we provide the theoretical basis that explains this improvement. Then we present the regenerator architecture based on spectral shift followed by filtering and provide experimental evidence of bit error ratio improvement of a noisy signal from 3x10(-6) without regenerator to 2x10(-10) with regenerator.
