Abstract:An all-silicon passive optical diode based on optical nonlinearity in cascaded photonic crystal (PhC) L3 cavities is proposed and demonstrated. A nonreciprocal transmission ratio (NTR) of 30.8 dB and insertion loss of 8.3 dB are realized in the device. The device has a relatively broad 17 dB operation bandwidth of 0.08 nm, and at least 16 dB of NTR is achieved when input power varies between -6.25 and -2.95 dBm. A nonlinear couple mode model for cascaded PhC cavities is established to analyze the behavior of the device, and numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the experiment results. Abstract:High-quality lithium niobate (LN) thin-film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optical applications. The strict phase-matching condition should be satisfied for an efficient nonlinear optical process, which requires dispersion engineering with an LN microresonator. However, this is challenging in single microresonator, resulting from the fabrication error. Here, we demonstrate strong nonlinear effects in a photonic molecule (PM) structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks. The size mismatch of the microdisks enables phase matching by employing coupling-induced frequency splitting to compensate for the material and geometric dispersion. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical phenomena including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic signal. Meanwhile, an ultra-high four-wave mixing absolute conversion efficiency of 14% as obtained when the second harmonic signal power is at microwatts level. The LN PM is of great potential for applications in nonlinear integrated photonics.

Abstract:Ultracompact chip-integrated all-optical diode is realized experimentally in a plasmonic microstructure, consisting of a plasmonic waveguide side-coupled two asymmetric plasmonic composite nanocavities covered with a multicomponent nanocomposite layer, formed directly in a plasmonic circuit. Extremely large optical nonlinearity enhancement is obtained for the multicomponent nanocomposite cover layer, originating from resonant excitation, slow-light effect, and field enhancement effect. Nonreciprocal transmission was achieved based on the difference in the shift magnitude of the transparency window centers of two asymmetric plasmonic nanocavities induced by the signal light, itself, for the forward and backward propagation cases. An ultralow threshold incident light power of 145 μW (corresponding to a threshold intensity of 570 kW/cm2) is realized, which is reduced by seven orders of magnitude compared with previous reports. An ultrasmall feature size of 2 μm and a transmission contrast ratio of 15 dB are obtained simultaneously.

Abstract:We experimentally realize a nanoscale all-optical diode in a photonic crystal heterostructure with broken spatial inversion symmetry, performing independent of optical nonlinearity. The physical mechanism lies in unique dispersion relations of the photonic crystal and the transition of incident light between different electromagnetic Bloch modes. An ultrahigh transmission contrast of 10(3) order, a large operating bandwidth of over 50 nm, and an ultralow photon intensity of less than 10 kW/cm(2) are reached simultaneously.

Abstract:We achieved an ultralow-power Fano-like diode in integrated photonic circuits through two cascaded and uncoupled photonic-crystal microcavities, coated with a nonlinear layer constructed from polycrystalline indium-tin oxide doped with gold nanoparticles. The multicomponent nanocomposite layer helps to obtain an extremely large nonlinearity enhancement on account of the quantum confinement effect, hot-electron injection, and local-field enhancement effect. Thus, the strong nonlinearity enhancement, asymmetric Fano-like spectrum lineshape, and asymmetric light confinement for the forward and backward incidence cases guarantee the nonreciprocal transmission of signal light. A compact size of 7 mu m is maintained for the photonic-crystal microcavities and the transmission contrast reached 15 dB. Besides, we achieved 1.5kW cm(-2) operating threshold intensity (cut down by a thousand times). This work assists chip-integrated optical computing on the basis of nonlinear photonic-crystal microcavities.

Abstract:Multiply resonant silicon photonic devices based on three coupled nanobeam cavities are proposed engineer third order nonlinearities at wavelengths around lambda = 1.55 mu m. We show that varying the geometrical parameters allows a flexible tuning of linear properties of the system, especially the deviations between the cavity resonance wavelengths. Based on the linear regime results, the nonlinear properties of the system are studied using coupled mode expressions of the super-modes given by the Tight-Binding method for the calculation of the nonlinear integrals controlling the intensity of the third-order nonlinear effects of the photonic molecules. We geometrically control the self-phase modulation (SPM), the cross-phase modulation (XPM), and the degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) nonlinear coefficients of the three coupled nanobeam cavities and identify general trends for nonlinear applications such as optical switching and frequency conversion devices.

Abstract:As an ideal miniaturized light source, wavelength-tunable nanolasers capable of emitting a wide spectrum stimulate intense interests for on-chip optoelectronics, optical communications, and spectroscopy. However, realization of such devices remains a major challenge because of extreme difficulties in achieving continuously reversibly tunable gain media and high quality (Q)-factor resonators on the nanoscale simultaneously. Here, exploiting single bandgap-graded CdSSe NWs and a Fabry-Pérot/whispering-gallery-mode (FP-WGM) coupling cavity, a free-standing fiber-integrated reversibly wavelength-tunable nanolaser covering a 42-nm wide spectrum at room temperature with high stability and reproducibility is demonstrated. In addition, a 1.13-nm tuning spectral resolution is realized. The substrate-free device design enables integration in optical fiber communications and information. With reversible and wide, continuous tunability of emission color and precise control per step, our work demonstrates a general approach to nanocavity coupling affording high Q-factors, enabling an ideal miniaturized module for a broad range of applications in optics and optoelectronics, with optical fiber integration.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.
Broadband High Contrast Ratio Optical Diodes Based on Polarization Conversion

Abstract:We propose to realize a broadband and high-contrast-ratio optical diode by using a layered structure composed of uniaxial crystal slabs with differently oriented optical axes. The operation principle is based on polarization conversion combined with photonic bandgap. Our numerical results show that an optical diode can be realized with the transmissivity contrast ratio higher than 10 000 in the wavelength range from 0.567 to 0.636 μm by using hexagonal boron nitride slabs for the structure. Theoretically, this method is suitable for any anisotropic materials, and the geometric parameters of the structure can be adjusted to tune the wavelength range as well as the transmissivity contrast ratio of the optical diode. Therefore, our work may provide useful guidelines to the design of compact broadband and high-contrast-ratio optical diodes.

Abstract:The optical diode effect, which is useful for on-chip optical information processing, has been recently demonstrated in cascaded nonlinear silicon microrings. In this paper, a semianalytical model for the diode is described in details, which extends the scope of the coupled-mode theory for linear microresonators to nonlinear regime through perturbation theory. The nonlinear effects addressed include the Kerr effect, two-photon absorption, free-carrier effect, and thermo-optic effect (TOE). Nonlinear effective mode volumes that characterize nonlinearities in the lumped element model are expressed using fields in vector forms. Simulations of the optical diode based on our model show good agreement with the measured spectra, where a forward-backward transmission ratio of ~ 28 dB is observed at an input power of ~ 1 mW. Moreover, TOE is discerned as the dominant nonlinearity in determining the diode functionality with this model. Being capable of dealing with photon-photon, photon-electron, and photon-phonon interactions, the methodology used here can be generalized and applied to model other microresonator-based opto-electronic devices.

Abstract:We experimentally realize an all-optical diode in a photonic crystal heterostructure with broken spatial inversion symmetry. The physical mechanism is attributed to bandgaps only for certain wavevectors and the transition between different electromagnetic Bloch modes, without any nonlinearity and high power requirement. An ultralow photon intensity of 50 kW/cm2 and an ultrahigh transmission contrast of over 103 are reached simultaneously. Compared with previous reported all-optical diodes, the operating power is reduced by seven orders of magnitude, while the transmission contrast is enlarged by two orders of magnitude. This approach may open a way for the study of integrated photonic devices.

Abstract:The principle of reciprocity underpins one of the fundamental effects in optics that signifies symmetric transmission with respect to the interchange of the source and observation points. Breaking reciprocity, however, enables additional functionalities and greatly enriches the applications of photonics in terms of nonreciprocal devices. Here, a realistic nanoscale cascaded-cavity system that envisages nonreciprocal optical isolation and efficient wavelength conversion based on spatiotemporally modulated index of refraction are proposed and numerically demonstrated. The on-chip, linear, magnetic-free nonreciprocal isolation and dynamically controllable wavelength conversion can be a promising candidate for silicon nanophotonic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:All optical diodes (AODs) play an important role in quantum optics and information processing, in which the information is encoded by photons. Only circularly polarized lights are able to carry the spin states of photons, which has been intensively used in quantum computing and information processing and enable new research fields, such as chiral quantum optics. An ideal AOD should be able to work with arbitrary polarizations states, including circularly polarized lights, which has not been demonstrated yet. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate for the first time a nanophotonic AOD that is able to work with circularly polarized lights. The AOD nanostructure is based on a heterostructure of two-dimension silica and silicon photonic crystals (PhCs). By controlling the effective refractive indices of the PhCs and using an inclined interface, we are able to exploit generalized total reflection principle to achieve non-reciprocal transmission of circularly polarized lights. In addition, the nanophotonic AOD is able to achieve high forward transmittance greater than 0.6 and high contrast ratio close to 1 in a broad wavelength range of 1497 nm to 1666 nm. The designed nanophotonic AOD will find broad applications in optical quantum information processing and computing.

Abstract:Reversible optical nonreciprocity was achieved in 1D nonlinear photonic structures by simply tuning the input light intensity. The theoretical model and working mechanism of bidirectional switching were discussed first. The influences of period number, the refractive index of the periodic dielectric medium, and input light intensity on the transmission spectra for the forward and backward directions were systematically investigated. Choosing the appropriate refractive index of the periodic dielectric medium, the threshold input light intensity for reversing unidirectional transmission directions was obtained for the optimum structure. The light-driven bidirectional nonreciprocity transmission of this compact photonic structure has great importance to realize dynamically controllable wave propagating microsystems.

Abstract:Optical diodes controlling the flow of light are of principal significance for optical information processing. They transmit light from an input to an output, but not in the reverse direction. This breaking of time reversal symmetry is conventionally achieved via Faraday or nonlinear effects. For applications in a quantum network, features such as the abilities of all-optical control, on-chip integration, and single-photon operation are important. Here we propose an all-optical optical diode which requires neither magnetic fields nor strong input fields. It is based on a "moving" photonic crystal generated in a three-level electromagnetically induced transparency medium in which the refractive index of a weak probe is modulated by the moving periodic intensity of a strong standing coupling field with two detuned counterpropagating components. Because of the Doppler effect, the frequency range of the crystal's band gap for the probe copropagating with the moving crystal is shifted from that for the counterpropagating probe. This mechanism is experimentally demonstrated in a room temperature Cs vapor cell.

Abstract:We propose theoretically an optical diode based on exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities. A flow of polaritons in the bistable regime is used to send signals through an asymmetric fixed potential that favours the tunneling of particles in one direction. Through dynamic modelling of the coherent polariton field, we demonstrate the characteristics of an ideal diode, namely that the forward signal is fully transmitted while the transmission in the reverse direction tends to zero, without any additional external control. Moreover, the system proves to be robust to the presence of disorder, intrinsic to microcavities, and can function at gigahertz repetition rates.

Abstract:Optically nonreciprocal devices provide critical functionalities such as light isolation and circulation in integrated photonic circuits for optical communications and information processing, but have been difficult to achieve. By exploring gain-saturation nonlinearity, we demonstrate on-chip optical nonreciprocity with excellent isolation performance within telecommunication wavelengths using only one toroid microcavity. Compatible with current complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process, our compact and simple scheme works for a very wide range of input power levels from similar to 10 microwatts down to similar to 10 nanowatts, and exhibits remarkable properties of one-way light transport with sufficiently low insertion loss. These superior features make our device become a promising critical building block indispensable for future integrated nanophotonic networks.

Abstract:Nanostructures that feature nonreciprocal light transmission are highly desirable building blocks for realizing photonic integrated circuits. Here, a simple and ultra-compact photonic-crystal structure, where a waveguide is coupled to a single nanocavity, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated, showing very efficient optical diode functionality. The key novelty of the structure is the use of a Fano resonance in combination with spatial symmetry breaking and cavity enhanced material nonlinearities to realize non-reciprocal propagation effects at ultra-low power and with a good wavelength tunability. The nonlinearity of the device relies on ultrafast carrier dynamics, rather than the thermal effects usually considered, allowing the demonstration of nonreciprocal operation at a bit-rate of 10 Gbit/s with a low energy consumption of 4.5 fJ/bit.
