Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission and reception. We successfully realized the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps dual optical carrier 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM with direct detection for ultra-short fiber transmission. And we also successfully demonstrated the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps single-band coherent optical dual polarization (DP)-16QAM-OFDM signal for the first time with coherent detection. The measured bit error ratio (BER) for 100Gbps single-band coherent optical DP-16QAM-OFDM signal is less than 3.8x10(-3) after 200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without electrical dispersion compensation (EDC).

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel approach to simultaneously receive multi-band 100-Gb/s direct-detection optical signal with only one polarization and one conventional 40-GHz photodiode. The modulation format of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) is selected to provide signal spectrum with high side-lobe suppression ratio, which can effectively reduce the electrical sub-band frequency interference. The whole 100-Gb/s OFDM/OQAM signal is comprised of 6 sub-bands with 16- and 32-QAM formats loading. Only one guard band is required to accommodate the overlapped 6-band signal-to-signal beat interference (SSBI). The receiver bandwidth is mainly limited by the digital storage oscilloscope (DSO) of 33 GHz. The transmission distance over standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is up to 320 km.

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:The fastest ever 11.25Gb/s real-time FPGA-based optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) transceivers utilizing 64-QAM encoding/decoding and significantly improved variable power loading are experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, incorporating advanced functionalities of on-line performance monitoring, live system parameter optimization and channel estimation. Real-time end-to-end transmission of an 11.25Gb/s 64-QAM-encoded OOFDM signal with a high electrical spectral efficiency of 5.625bit/s/Hz over 25km of standard and MetroCor single-mode fibres is successfully achieved with respective power penalties of 0.3dB and -0.2dB at a BER of 1.0 x 10(-3) in a directly modulated DFB laser-based intensity modulation and direct detection system without in-line optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. The impacts of variable power loading as well as electrical and optical components on the transmission performance of the demonstrated transceivers are experimentally explored in detail. In addition, numerical simulations also show that variable power loading is an extremely effective means of escalating system performance to its maximum potential.

Abstract:Coherent optical single-carrier frequency-division-multiplexing (CO-SCFDM) is a promising candidate for future high-speed long-haul optical fiber transmission system. Being a modified form of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM), the CO-SCFDM can inherit the advantages such as low computation complexity and high flexibility, while suffers less nonlinear impairment due to much lower peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate 1.08 Tb/s polarization-division multiplexing (PDM) CO-SCFDM transmission over 3170 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) only. The back-to-back and nonlinear transmission performances for CO-OFDM and CO-SCFDM are also compared.
