Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission and reception. We successfully realized the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps dual optical carrier 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM with direct detection for ultra-short fiber transmission. And we also successfully demonstrated the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps single-band coherent optical dual polarization (DP)-16QAM-OFDM signal for the first time with coherent detection. The measured bit error ratio (BER) for 100Gbps single-band coherent optical DP-16QAM-OFDM signal is less than 3.8x10(-3) after 200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without electrical dispersion compensation (EDC).

Abstract:In this paper, we successfully transmit 8 x 520 Gb/s pre-equalized DFT-spread PDM-16QAM orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signal over 840 km SMF with BER under 2.4 x 10(-2). We discuss how to obtain accurate tranceivers' response during pre-equalization for DFT-spread OFDM with coherent detection and we find conventional OFDM symbols training sequences (TSs) outperform DFT-spread OFDM symbols TSs in obtaining channel response for pre-equalization and equalization. Additionally, the optimal IFFT/FFT size is explored for the pre-equalized DFT-spread PDM-16QAM-OFDM transmission systems. Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for short-reach optical link. Intensity modulation/direct detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method, due to its low cost and power consumption. In the aspect of digital signal processing (DSP), discrete Fourier transform-spread (DFT-s) precoding can be used to reduce peak to average power ratio (PAPR) and average the noise among the subcarriers. In addition, probabilistic shaping (PS) turns out to further increase the system capacity. We experimentally demonstrated a 200 Gbit/s single λ dual band DMT transmission with a spectrum efficiency (SE) of 6.29 bit/s/Hz. The achievable information rate (AIR) of the proposed dual band signal increases about 30 Gbit/s compared with that of single band signal. Moreover, single-sideband (SSB) signal and signal with guard band are implemented to mitigate the frequency selective fading of optical fiber chromatic dispersion (CD). The performance of these two methods are quite closed for short reach transmission. Considering the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) introduced by the SSB signal, an extra Volterra filter is applied in DSP. Besides, an extra optical filter is required to generate the SSB signal.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a 256-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (256QAM) direct-detection optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DDO-OFDM) transmission system utilizing a cost-effective directly modulated laser (DML). Intra-symbol frequency-domain averaging (ISFA) is applied to suppress in-band noise while the channel response estimation and Discrete Fourier Transform-spread (DFT-spread) is used to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of the transmitted OFDM signal. The bit-error ratio (BER) of 15-Gbit/s 256QAM-OFDM signal has been measured after 20-km SSMF transmission that is less than 7% forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) as the launch power into fiber is set at 6dBm. For 11.85-Gbit/s 256QAM-OFDM signal, with the aid of ISFA-based channel estimation and PAPR reduction enabled by DFT-spread, the BER after 20-km SSMF transmission can be improved from 6.4 x 10(-3) to 6.8 x 10(-4) when the received optical power is -6dBm. Abstract:The fastest ever 11.25Gb/s real-time FPGA-based optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OOFDM) transceivers utilizing 64-QAM encoding/decoding and significantly improved variable power loading are experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, incorporating advanced functionalities of on-line performance monitoring, live system parameter optimization and channel estimation. Real-time end-to-end transmission of an 11.25Gb/s 64-QAM-encoded OOFDM signal with a high electrical spectral efficiency of 5.625bit/s/Hz over 25km of standard and MetroCor single-mode fibres is successfully achieved with respective power penalties of 0.3dB and -0.2dB at a BER of 1.0 x 10(-3) in a directly modulated DFB laser-based intensity modulation and direct detection system without in-line optical amplification and chromatic dispersion compensation. The impacts of variable power loading as well as electrical and optical components on the transmission performance of the demonstrated transceivers are experimentally explored in detail. In addition, numerical simulations also show that variable power loading is an extremely effective means of escalating system performance to its maximum potential.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission based on FPGA. We successfully demonstrated four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) 256.51Gb/s 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM signal transmission system for short-reach optical amplifier free inter-connection with real-time reception. Four optical carriers are modulated by four different 16QAM-OFDM signals via 10G-class direct modulation lasers (DMLs). We achieved highest capacity real-time reception optical OFDM signal transmission over 2.4-km SMF with the bit-error ratio (BER) under soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) limitation of 2.4x10(-2). In order to achieve higher spectrum efficiency (SE), we demonstrate 4-channel high level QAM-OFDM transmission over 20-km SMF-28 with real-time reception. 58.72-Gb/s 256QAM-OFDM and 56.4-Gb/s 128QAM-OFDM signal transmission within 25-GHz grid is achieved with the BER under 2.4x10(-2) and real-time reception.
