Abstract:We demonstrate three-channel WDM transmission of 12.84-Tb/s/ch polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 64-QAM over 320-km SMF-28 with hybrid amplification spans. Each 10-Tb/s superchannel comprises one hundred Nyquist DWDM subchannels in 1275-GHz spectrum occupancy, yielding a spectral efficiency of 7.9 b/s/Hz. The BER of all channels after transmission over 320 km is measured smaller than 2×10-2, the third generation FEC limit.

Abstract:Employing raised-cosine pulse-shaped polarization- division-multiplexing (PDM) 36 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format and standard single-mode fiber (SMF-28), 16 x 107-Gb/s PDM-36QAM signals in 12.5-GHz spacing have been realized to transmit over 400 km with a hybrid erbium-doped fiber amplifier and Raman amplification. The spectral efficiency (SE) for the 100 Gb/s is up to 8 b/s/Hz. This is the longest transmission for 100 Gb/s with an SE of 8 b/s/Hz.

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the coherent transmission system with the highest ETDM-based symbol rate of 128.8-GBaud over record breaking distances. We successfully transmitted single-carrier 515.2-Gb/s PDM-QPSK/9-QAM signals over 10,130km/6,078-km, respectively, over 100km spans of TeraWave SLA + fiber. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest ETDM-based symbol rate reported so far, and the longest WDM transmission distance with single-carrier 400G signals. For the first time, the 515.2-Gb/s single-carrier PDM-QPSK signals in 200-GHz-grid are successfully transmitted over distance above 10,000km in terrestrial transmission environment. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an eight-channel WDM coherent system with 50GHz frequency spacing which can realize the transmission of 528-Gb/s/channel probabilistically-shaped 64QAM signal over 3000km fiber in a terrestrial system. Abstract:Successful joint experiments with Deutsche Telecom (DT) on long-haul transmission of 100 G and beyond are demonstrated over standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and inline erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only amplification. The transmission link consists of eight nodes and 950-km installed SSMF in DT's optical infrastructure with the addition of lab SSMF for extended optical reach. The first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist-WDM signals is reported over 1750-km distance with 21.6-dB average loss per span. Each channel modulated by a 54.2-Gbaud PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signal is on 50-GHz grid, achieving a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 bit/s/Hz. We also demonstrate mixed data-rate transmission coexisting with 1 T, 400 G, and 100 G channels. The 400 G uses four independent subcarriers modulated by 28-Gbaud PDM-QPSK signals, yielding the net SE of 4 bit/s/Hz while 13 optically generated subcarriers from single optical source are employed in 1 T channel with 25-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulation. The 100 G signal uses real-time coherent PDM-QPSK transponder with 15% overhead of soft-decision forward-error correction. The digital postfilter and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation are introduced at the receiver DSP to suppress noise, linear crosstalk, and filtering effects. Our results show the future 400 G and 1 T channels utilizing the Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing technique can transmit long-haul distance with higher SE using the same QPSK format.

Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a W-band seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless-fiber transmission system enabled by photonic millimeter-wave generation and demodulation techniques, in which up to 128-Gb/s (16-Gbd) polarization division multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal can be first transmitted over 50-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28), then delivered over 1-m × 2 multiple-input multiple-output wireless link at 100 GHz and finally transmitted over another 50-km SMF-28 with a bit-error ratio less than the third-generation soft-decision forward-error-correction threshold of 2 × 10-2. The proposed system can be well compatible with high-level QAM and is suited to large-capacity high-spectral-efficiency fiber-wireless integration communication.

Abstract:We have transmitted a 7 x 224 Gb/s/ch Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexed signal over a 1600-km conventional single-mode fiber (SMF-28) with 80 km per span and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only amplification. Each channel on the 50-GHz grid is modulated using polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature-phase-shift-keying at 56 Gbaud giving a record spectral efficiency of 4 b/s/Hz. Both the post filter and the Viterbi maximum likelihood sequence detection are introduced into digital signal processing, to suppress the undesired noise, linear crosstalk enhancement, and filtering effects. The bit error ratio of all channels after transmission over a 1600-km SMF-28 is smaller than the forward error correction limit of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:We firstly demonstrated a 24Tb/s (24×1.3Tb/s) C and L-band WDM transmission of PDM-CO-OFDM superchannels over 2400km EDFA-only SMF-28 link with BER less than the 3rd generation FEC threshold of 2×10−2. Each PDM-CO-OFDM superchannel per WDM tributary delivers up to 1.3Tb/s total capacity over 13 flattened, frequency-locked optical subcarriers yielding a compact spectral width of 350GHz.
