Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:We present a low-cost intensity-modulated direct detection (IM/DD) system for the transmission of high-order Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signals. By adopting the 1-bit quantized Delta-sigma modulation (DSM) technology, we quantized the Discrete Multi-Tone modulation (DMT) time-domain waveform carrying the higher-order QAM signal into on-off keying (OOK) signal, and successfully realized the transmission of the higher-order QAM signal on the IM/DD link. Thanks to the high quantization SNR of the DSM modulator, up to 4096QAM transmission is supported. In particular, through the use of Vestigial Side Band (VSB) and pre-equalization, we experimentally demonstrated the transmission of 100G baud DSM-OOK signal in C-band 50 km fiber. The experimental results show that the bit error ratio (BER) of the 1024QAM signal can reach the hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold 3.8 x 10(-3), and the BER of the 4096QAM signal can reach the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold 4.2 x 10(-2). To our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of high-speed DSM signal transmission on optical fiber links.

Abstract:We demonstrate a four-lane wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) system at O-band. The 3-dB bandwidth of directly modulated lasers (DMLs) in this experiment is only 15 GHz. To support 100-Gbit/s/lane PAM-4 transmission in each lane, digital pre-equalization and advanced receiver-side DSPs are adopted to compensate for bandwidth limitation. Moreover, semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is utilized at the receiver to compensate for the optical power loss during fiber transmission so that 40-km transmission distance can be achieved. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to successfully transmit 400-Gbit/s PAM-4 signals over 40-km SSMF with 15-GHz DMLs.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate several different approaches for the realization of over 100Gb/s fiber-wireless integration system, including optical PDM combined with MIMO reception, advanced multi-level modulation, optical multi-carrier modulation, electrical multi-carrier modulation, antenna polarization multiplexing and multi-band multiplexing. These approaches can effectively reduce the signal baud rate as well as the required bandwidth for optical and electrical devices. We also experimentally investigate the problems, such as multi-path effect due to different wireless transmission distance, existing in the large capacity fiber-wireless integration system. We experimentally demonstrate these problems can be effectively solved by advanced DSP algorithms including classic CMA.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a W-band (75-110 GHz) full-duplex transmission fiber-wireless-fiber system with the rate up to 60 Gb/s for the first time. Both the uplink and downlink in our proposed system consist of two spans of 80 km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) and a 1-m wireless link. We experimentally demonstrate that our proposed system can simultaneously transmit a 60 Gb/s upstream quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal carried by 99 GHz carrier frequency over the uplink and a 60 Gb/s downstream QPSK signal carried by 101 GHz carrier frequency over the downlink. Both millimeter-wave generation and demodulation are enabled by photonic techniques. Wireless crosstalk that occurs between the uplink and the downlink is effectively avoided because the pair of antennas adopted in the uplink is polarization orthogonal to that adopted in the downlink. With the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 20 dB, the bit error ratios (BERs) for 60 Gb/s signal transmission are less than the third-generation forward-error-correction (FEC) limitation of 2 x 10(-2).
