Abstract:Two new metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic notch filters are designed utilizing simple ring resonators. In the first design, a circular resonator, with a concentric ring inside, is directly connected to the MIM waveguide, while in the second design, the MIM waveguide is coupled by a metallic gap. When a phase change material Ge 2 Sb 2 Se 4 Te 1 (GSST) is used as the ring material instead of Si, the overall performance of the filter significantly improves. The design parameters were systematically optimized and all the performance parameters of the filter were thoroughly studied using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. When the MIM waveguide is directly connected, for the circle radius of 620 nm and the ring thickness of 55 nm, the quality factor is 481.54, selectivity is 1.5 nm and transmission dip is 0.03. The performance improvement is nearly double in comparison to Si as the ring material. On the other hand, when the circular resonator cavity of 370 nm radius, containing a 55 nm-thick dielectric ring, is coupled to the MIM waveguide by a metallic gap of 25 nm the quality factor, selectivity and transmission dip are 221.95, 3.8 nm and 0.08, respectively. For the Si ring, these performance parameters are 169.9, 5 nm and 0.11, respectively. Although the performance of the first design is better than the second one, the latter offers a more compact footprint. In terms of quality factor, selectivity and transmission dip, the proposed plasmonic filters demonstrate superior performance than the plasmonic filters reported recently in the literature.
