Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, including graphene, black phosphorus (BP) and transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) such as molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), tungsten diselenide (WSe2), have attracted increasing attention for the application in electronic and optoelectronic devices. Contacts, which are the communication links between these 2D materials and external circuitry, have significant effects on the performance of electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the performance of devices based on 2D semiconductors (SCs) is often limited by the contacts. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the basic physics and role of contacts in 2D SCs, elucidating Schottky barrier nature and Fermi level pinning effect at metal/2D SCs contact interface. The progress of contact engineering, including traditional metals contacts and metallic 2D materials contacts, for improving the performance of 2D SCs based devices is presented. Traditional metal contacts, named 3D top and edge contacts, are discussed briefly. Meanwhile, methods of building 2D materials contacts (2D top contact and 2D edge contact) are discussed in detail, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of 2D metallic material contacts, phase engineered metallic phase contacts and intercalation induced metallic state contacts. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of contact engineering for 2D SCs are outlined.

Abstract:The exceptional physical properties and unique layered structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials have made this class of materials great candidates for applications in electronics, energy conversion/storage devices, nanocomposites, and multifunctional coatings, among others. At the center of this application space, mechanical properties play a vital role in materials design, manufacturing, integration and performance. The emergence of 2D materials has also sparked broad scientific inquiry, with new understanding of mechanical interactions between 2D structures and interfaces being of great interest to the community. Building on the dramatic expansion of recent research activities, here we review significant advances in the understanding of the elastic properties, in-plane failures, fatigue performance, interfacial shear/friction, and adhesion behavior of 2D materials. In this article, special emphasis is placed on some new 2D materials, novel characterization techniques and computational methods, as well as insights into deformation and failure mechanisms. A deep understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that govern 2D material mechanics is further provided, in the hopes that the community may draw design strategies for structural and interfacial engineering of 2D material systems. We end this review article with a discussion of our perspective on the state of the field and outlook on areas for future research directions.

Abstract:Contact engineering is of critical importance for two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based devices. However, there are only a few solutions to overcome this obstacle because of the complexity of the TMD-contact interface. In this work, we propose a novel method using a soft plasma treatment followed by the seamless deposition of a metal electrode to reduce the contact resistance of MoS2 field effect transistors (FETs). The treated FETs exhibit three times higher mobility than the control FETs without plasma treatment. The soft plasma treatment can remove the facial sulfur atoms and expose the middle Mo atoms so that they come into direct contact with the metal electrode, thus greatly improving the contact behavior. First-principles calculation is also performed to support the experimental results. Our potentially scalable strategy can be extended to the whole family of TMD based FETs to provide a possible route of device processsing technology for 2D device application.

Abstract:A fascinating photonic platform with a small device scale, fast operating speed, as well as low energy consumption is two-dimensional (2D) materials, thanks to their in-plane crystalline structures and out-of-plane quantum confinement. The key to further advancement in this research field is the ability to modify the optical properties of the 2D materials. The modifications typically come from the materials themselves, for example, altering their chemical compositions. This article reviews a comparably less explored but promising means, through engineering the photonic surroundings. Rather than modifying materials themselves, this means manipulates the dielectric and metallic environments, both uniform and nanostructured, that directly interact with the materials. For 2D materials that are only one or a few atoms thick, the interaction with the environment can be remarkably efficient. This review summarizes the three degrees of freedom of this interaction: weak coupling, strong coupling, and multifunctionality. In addition, it reviews a relatively timing concept of engineering that directly applied to the 2D materials by patterning. Benefiting from the burgeoning development of nanophotonics, the engineering of photonic environments provides a versatile and creative methodology of reshaping light–matter interaction in 2D materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D)functional materials(2DFMs)are ma-terials with 2D features and fascinating physical properties for various applications.The large diameter-length ratio gives them unprecedented property compared to their bulky states.A free surface state,unsaturated active site,flexible light-matter inter-action and the strong quantum Hall effect make 2DFMs optimal for many emerging issues.Over the past two decades,tremen-dous work has been done on the synthesis,characterization and application of 2DFMs.Among this research,seminal work ap-peared in 2004.In a typical experiment,Geim and Novoselov ex-foliated monolayer graphene from bulky graphite,which greatly boosted the enthusiasm for research into 2DFMs[1].Since then,this subject has become a central issue in physical science and will continue to be a bustling topic in the future.Materi-als with 2D layered structures,such as hexagonal-boron nitride(h-BN),MoS2,metal halides,MXenes,MOFs and COFs,have been synthesized and investigated in a series of domains.These fields cover efficient photonics,gas sensing and separation,an-tiviral protection and detection,energy conversion and storage,and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The rise of two-dimensional (2D) materials research took place following the isolation of graphene in 2004. These new 2D materials include transition metal dichalcogenides, mono-elemental 2D sheets, and several carbide- and nitride-based materials. The number of publications related to these emerging materials has been drastically increasing over the last five years. Thus, through this comprehensive review, we aim to discuss the most recent groundbreaking discoveries as well as emerging opportunities and remaining challenges. This review starts out by delving into the improved methods of producing these new 2D materials via controlled exfoliation, metal organic chemical vapor deposition, and wet chemical means. We look into recent studies of doping as well as the optical properties of 2D materials and their heterostructures. Recent advances towards applications of these materials in 2D electronics are also reviewed, and include the tunnel MOSFET and ways to reduce the contact resistance for fabricating high-quality devices. Finally, several unique and innovative applications recently explored are discussed as well as perspectives of this exciting and fast moving field.

Abstract:Materials with thickness ranging from a few nanometers to a single atomic layer present unprecedented opportunities to investigate new phases of matter constrained to the two-dimensional <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://plane.Particle" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-particle Coulomb interaction is dramatically affected and shaped by the dimensionality reduction, driving well-established solid state theoretical approaches to their limit of applicability. Methodological developments in theoretical modelling and computational algorithms, in close interaction with experiments, led to the discovery of the extraordinary properties of two-dimensional materials, such as high carrier mobility, Dirac cone dispersion and bright exciton luminescence, and inspired new device design paradigms. This review aims to describe the computational techniques used to simulate and predict the optical, electronic and mechanical properties of two-dimensional materials, and to interpret experimental observations. In particular, we discuss in detail the particular challenges arising in the simulation of two-dimensional constrained fermions, and we offer our perspective on the future directions in this field.

Abstract:The family of 2D materials is an unprecedented platform for materials by design, thanks to their ever‐expanding material portfolio with rich internal degrees of freedom. The study provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress, challenges and emerging opportunities in a frontier research area that exploits machine learning—a very powerful data‐driven approach and subset of artificial intelligence—for 2D materials. The availability of an ever‐expanding portfolio of 2D materials with rich internal degrees of freedom (spin, excitonic, valley, sublattice, and layer pseudospin) together with the unique ability to tailor heterostructures made layer by layer in a precisely chosen stacking sequence and relative crystallographic alignments, offers an unprecedented platform for realizing materials by design. However, the breadth of multi‐dimensional parameter space and massive data sets involved is emblematic of complex, resource‐intensive experimentation, which not only challenges the current state of the art but also renders exhaustive sampling untenable. To this end, machine learning, a very powerful data‐driven approach and subset of artificial intelligence, is a potential game‐changer, enabling a cheaper – yet more efficient – alternative to traditional computational strategies. It is also a new paradigm for autonomous experimentation for accelerated discovery and machine‐assisted design of functional 2D materials and heterostructures. Here, the study reviews the recent progress and challenges of such endeavors, and highlight various emerging opportunities in this frontier research area.

Abstract:2D materials have unique intrinsic properties. The properties of 2D materials are tunable. Layer size produces significant variation in properties. Ductile failure in 2D materials is very rare. Transition metal‐dichalcogenides are superior to graphene. In the modern age of nanotechnology, the discovery of graphene has opened up the way to study and develop of several novel 2D materials. The unique physical and chemical properties of 2D materials have enhanced their research, making them superior to the commercial bulk materials used in various applications. Efforts have been made in the current study to present an overview of the intrinsic properties of these materials. Furthermore, synthesis and applications are also reviewed and discussed. Finally, the future outlook of 2D materials is discussed to enhance the research and performance of these materials, which can result in broader applications benefitting the electrical and electronics industries and society. Intensive research into 2D materials is expected to lead to the discovery of new materials with enhanced properties that will benefit the industry and society at large.

Abstract:Neuromorphic intelligent hardware technologies have undergone rapid advancement during the past decade, with the goal of building intelligent devices and systems capable of overcoming challenges associated with conventional hardware. Realization of neuromorphic intelligent hardware depends on major advances in materials science, condensed matter physics, device physics and engineering. As a revolutionary discovery, two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomically-thin thickness and exceptionally high tunability introduce a new physical paradigm and show great promise in the development of intelligent devices. Here, we give prominence to three categories of tunable properties (i.e., charge carrier, band structure, lattice structure) that are inherent for 2D materials and review their superiorities in constructing intelligent devices particularly in electronics and optoelectronics. Furthermore, we provide insight into how the unique physical mechanisms emerging in 2D materials offer a fertile ground for the design of diverse intelligence devices.

Abstract:With an extensive range of distinctive features at nano meter-scale thicknesses, two-dimensional (2D) materials drawn the attention of the scientific community. Despite tremendous advancements in exploratory research on 2D materials, knowledge of 2D electrical transport and carrier dynamics still in its infancy. Thus, here we highlighted the electrical characteristics of 2D materials with electronic band structure, electronic transport, dielectric constant, carriers mobility. The atomic thinness of 2D materials makes substantially scaled field-effect transistors (FETs) with reduced short-channel effects conceivable, even though strong carrier mobility required for high performance, low-voltage device operations. We also discussed here about factors affecting 2D materials which easily enhanced the activity of those materials for various applications. Presently, Those 2D materials used in state-of-the-art electrical and optoelectronic devices because of the extensive nature of their electronic band structure. 2D materials offer unprecedented freedom for the design of novel p-n junction device topologies in contrast to conventional bulk semiconductors. We also, describe the numerous 2D p-n junctions, such as homo junction and hetero junction including mixed dimensional junctions. Finally, we talked about the problems and potential for the future.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have been considered as promising candidates to fabricate ultimately scaled field-effect transistors (FETs), due to the atomically thin thickness and high carrier mobility. However, the performance of FETs based on 2D semiconductors has been limited by extrinsic factors, including high contact resistance, strong interfacial scattering, and unintentional doping. Among these challenges, contact resistance is a dominant issue, and important progress has been made in recent years. In this review, the Schottky–Mott model is introduced to show the ideal Schottky barrier, and we further discuss the contribution of the Fermi-level pinning effect to the high contact resistance in 2D semiconductor devices. In 2D FETs, Fermi-level pinning is attributed to the high-energy metal deposition process, which would damage the lattice of atomically thin 2D semiconductors and induce the pinning of the metal Fermi level. Then, two contact structures and the strategies to fabricate low-contact-resistance short-channel 2D FETs are introduced. Finally, our review provides practical guidelines for the realization of high-performance 2D-semiconductors-based FETs with low contact resistance and discusses the outlook of this field.

Abstract:After a decade of intensive research on two-dimensional (2D) materials inspired by the discovery of graphene, the field of 2D electronics has reached a stage with booming materials and device architectures. However, the efficient integration of 2D functional layers with three-dimensional (3D) systems remains a significant challenge, limiting device performance and circuit design. In this review, we investigate the experimental efforts in interfacing 2D layers with 3D materials and analyze the properties of the heterojunctions formed between them. The contact resistivity of metal on graphene and related 2D materials deserves special attention, while the Schottky junctions formed between metal/2D semiconductor or graphene/3D semiconductor call for careful reconsideration of the physical models describing the junction behavior. The combination of 2D and 3D semiconductors presents a form of p-n junctions that have just marked their debut. For each type of the heterojunctions, the potential applications are reviewed briefly.
