Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials represented by graphene have unique 2D layered structure,exhibiting excellent physical,chemical,electronic and optical properties for a wide spectra of applications.Since the discovery of graphene,2D materials have attracted extensive attentions in various fields.Based on the composition of 2D materials,they were divided into five categories:element,nonmetallic compound,metallic compound,salt and organic.The structural characteristics of 2D materials were described,the preparation methods,as well as their properties and potential applications in electronics/optoelectronics,catalysis,energy storageand conversion,sensors and environmental remediation were summarized.

Abstract:Owing to unique structures and properties, 2D layered materials have exhibited great potentials for energy-related applications. Among these, 2D Bi-based layered materials which possess intriguing characteristics for energy conversion and storage systems have attracted tremendous attention. In this review, the structural and electronic properties of 2D Bi-based layered materials classified into four categories (unitary, binary, ternary and multinary) are introduced. Their promising applications in energy conversion and storage are reviewed in details, with particular emphasis on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, solar cells, thermoelectrics, optoelectronics and rechargeable batteries. Finally, based on current research progress, future perspectives for exploring and developing advanced 2D Bi-based layered energy conversion and storage materials are presented.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D) layered materials have attracted great attention due to their unique electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. 2D layered materials have unique van der Waals gaps, thus the foreign substance, such as atoms, molecules and ions, can be inserted into the gaps to change the physical and chemical properties of 2D layered materials, which is conducive to realize their multi-functional application. Herein, we present a critical review of recent research progress of 2D intercalated materials, including the synthesizing methods, theoretical calculation, characterization and multifunctional application. Finally, we will summarize the current challenges and future opportunities in the development of 2D intercalated materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials have attracted intensive interests in the past decade. Their unique electronic, magnetic, optical, and mechanical properties render broad applications in various fields. Stability of these ultrathin materials has to be delicately considered because their structures and properties are subject to ambient conditions. In this work, we review the chemical and structural stabilities of versatile 2D layered materials, and summarize the ways to modify the materials for the enhancement of their stabilities. Our review not only provides deep understandings of the stability of 2D materials, but may inspire new ideas to improve the reliability and durability of related devices.

Abstract:2D materials have unique intrinsic properties. The properties of 2D materials are tunable. Layer size produces significant variation in properties. Ductile failure in 2D materials is very rare. Transition metal‐dichalcogenides are superior to graphene. In the modern age of nanotechnology, the discovery of graphene has opened up the way to study and develop of several novel 2D materials. The unique physical and chemical properties of 2D materials have enhanced their research, making them superior to the commercial bulk materials used in various applications. Efforts have been made in the current study to present an overview of the intrinsic properties of these materials. Furthermore, synthesis and applications are also reviewed and discussed. Finally, the future outlook of 2D materials is discussed to enhance the research and performance of these materials, which can result in broader applications benefitting the electrical and electronics industries and society. Intensive research into 2D materials is expected to lead to the discovery of new materials with enhanced properties that will benefit the industry and society at large.

Abstract:Two-dimensional(2D)functional materials(2DFMs)are ma-terials with 2D features and fascinating physical properties for various applications.The large diameter-length ratio gives them unprecedented property compared to their bulky states.A free surface state,unsaturated active site,flexible light-matter inter-action and the strong quantum Hall effect make 2DFMs optimal for many emerging issues.Over the past two decades,tremen-dous work has been done on the synthesis,characterization and application of 2DFMs.Among this research,seminal work ap-peared in 2004.In a typical experiment,Geim and Novoselov ex-foliated monolayer graphene from bulky graphite,which greatly boosted the enthusiasm for research into 2DFMs[1].Since then,this subject has become a central issue in physical science and will continue to be a bustling topic in the future.Materi-als with 2D layered structures,such as hexagonal-boron nitride(h-BN),MoS2,metal halides,MXenes,MOFs and COFs,have been synthesized and investigated in a series of domains.These fields cover efficient photonics,gas sensing and separation,an-tiviral protection and detection,energy conversion and storage,and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:In recent years, 2D layered materials, including graphene, topological insulators, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXenes, graphitic carbon nitride, and metal‐organic frameworks, have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and energy. Their rise in the field of nonlinear photonics began around 2009 and has become an important research direction. Here, the synthesis techniques, nonlinear optical properties, integration strategies, and device applications of layered materials are reviewed. In terms of nonlinear optical properties, the focus is on saturable absorption and Kerr nonlinearity. On this basis, their applications in various pulsed lasers, including fiber lasers, solid‐state lasers, waveguide lasers, and related nonlinear optical phenomenon, are summarized. In addition, novel optical devices using layered materials, such as optical modulators, optical polarizers, optical switchers, and even all‐optical device, are also involved. It is believed that the development of 2D layered materials in the field of photonics will continue to deepen, thus laying a good foundation for its practical application.

Abstract:In the past few decades, 2D layer materials have gradually become a central focus in materials science owing to their uniquely layered structural qualities and good optoelectronic properties. However, in the development of 2D materials, several disadvantages, such as limited types of materials and the inability to synthesize large-scale materials, severely confine their application. Therefore, further exploration of new materials and preparation methods is necessary to meet technological developmental needs. Organic molecular materials have the advantage of being customizable. Therefore, if organic molecular and 2D materials are combined, the resulting 2D organic materials would have excellent optical and electrical properties. In addition, through this combination, the free design and large-scale synthesis of 2D materials can be realized in principle. Furthermore, 2D organic materials exhibit excellent properties and unique functionalities along with great potential for developing sensors, biomedicine, and electronics. In this review, 2D organic materials are divided into five categories. The preparation methods and material properties of each class of materials are also described in detail. Notably, to comprehensively understand each material's advantages, the latest research applications for each material are presented in detail and summarized. Finally, the future development and application prospects of 2D organic materials are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Ultrathin, 2D organic layers of sub-ten nanometer thicknesses and high aspect ratios have received a great deal of attention for their graphene-like topological features and emerging properties. Rational synthetic strategies have led to the realization of periodic 2D layers with unprecedented structural precision. Herein, recent progress on the synthesis of 2D organic layers, including methods based on both non-covalent and covalent interactions, is summarized, and potential applications are highlighted. Such 2D organic nanostructures have a brilliant future as prospective multifunctional materials, showing great promise as platforms for engineering novel optoelectronic, interfacial, and bioactive properties.

Abstract:Abstract With the development of Moore's Law, the future trend of devices will inevitably be shrinking and integration to further achieve size reduction. The emergence of new two-dimensional non-layered materials (2DNLMs) not only enriches the 2D material family to meet future development, but also stimulates the global enthusiasm for basic research and application technologies in the 2D field. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures, in which two-dimensional layered materials (2DLMs) are physically stacked layer by layer, can also occur between 2DLMs and 2DNLMs hybrid heterostructure, providing an alternative platform for nanoelectronics and optoelectronic applications. Here, we outline the recent developments of 2DLMs/2DNLMs hybrid heterostructures, with particular emphasis on major advances in synthetic methods and applications. And the categories and crystal structures of 2DLMs and 2DNLMs are also shown. We highlight some promising applications of the heterostructures in electronics, optoelectronics, and catalysis. Finally, we provide conclusions and future prospects in the 2D materials field.

Abstract:Quantum flatland i.e., the family of two dimensional (2D) quantum materials has become increscent and has already encompassed elemental atomic sheets (Xenes), 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), 2D metal nitrides/carbides/carbonitrides (MXenes), 2D metal oxides, 2D metal phosphides, 2D metal halides, 2D mixed oxides, etc. and still new members are being explored. Owing to the occurrence of various structural phases of each 2D material and each exhibiting a unique electronic structure; bestows distinct physical and chemical properties. In the early years, world record electronic mobility and fractional quantum Hall effect of graphene attracted attention. Thanks to excellent electronic mobility, and extreme sensitivity of their electronic structures towards the adjacent environment, 2D materials have been employed as various ultrafast precision sensors such as gas/fire/light/strain sensors and in trace-level molecular detectors and disease diagnosis. 2D materials, their doped versions, and their hetero layers and hybrids have been successfully employed in electronic/photonic/optoelectronic/spintronic and straintronic chips. In recent times, quantum behavior such as the existence of a superconducting phase in moiré hetero layers, the feasibility of hyperbolic photonic metamaterials, mechanical metamaterials with negative Poisson ratio, and potential usage in second/third harmonic generation and electromagnetic shields, etc. have raised the expectations further. High surface area, excellent young's moduli, and anchoring/coupling capability bolster hopes for their usage as nanofillers in polymers, glass, and soft metals. Even though lab-scale demonstrations have been showcased, large-scale applications such as solar cells, LEDs, flat panel displays, hybrid energy storage, catalysis (including water splitting and CO2 reduction), etc. will catch up. While new members of the flatland family will be invented, new methods of large-scale synthesis of defect-free crystals will be explored and novel applications will emerge, it is expected. Achieving a high level of in-plane doping in 2D materials without adding defects is a challenge to work on. Development of understanding of inter-layer coupling and its effects on electron injection/excited state electron transfer at the 2D-2D interfaces will lead to future generation heterolayer devices and sensors.

Abstract:Layered materials with phase transitions, such as charge density wave (CDW) and magnetic and dipole ordering, have potential to be exfoliated into monolayers and few-layers and then become a large and important subfamily of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Benefitting from enriched physical properties from the collective interactions, long-range ordering, and related phase transitions, as well as the atomic thickness yet having nondangling bonds on the surface, 2D phase-transition materials have vast potential for use in new-concept and functional devices. Here, potential 2D phase-transition materials with CDWs and magnetic and dipole ordering, including transition metal dichalcogenides, transition metal halides, metal thio/selenophosphates, chromium silicon/germanium tellurides, and more, are introduced. The structures and experimental phase-transition properties are summarized for the bulk materials and some of the obtained monolayers. In addition, recent experimental progress on the synthesis and measurement of monolayers, such as 1T-TaS2 , CrI3 , and Cr2 Ge2 Te6 , is reviewed.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, hexagonal boron nitrides (hBN), and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, e.g., MoS2) have attracted considerable attention in the past few years because of their novel properties and versatile potential applications. These 2D layers can be integrated into a monolayer (lateral 2D heterostructure) or a multilayer stack (vertical 2D heterostructure). The resulting artificial 2D structures provide access to new properties and applications beyond their component 2D atomic crystals and hence, they are emerging as a new exciting field of research. In this article, we review recent progress on the fabrication, characterization, and applications of various 2D heterostructures.

Abstract:Layered materials with unique structures and symmetries have attracted tremendous interest for constructing 2-dimensional (2D) structures. The weak interlayer interaction renders them to be readily isolated into various ultrathin nanosheets with exotic properties and diverse applications. In order to enrich the library of 2D materials, extensive progress has been made in the field of ternary layered materials. Consequently, many brand-new materials are derived, which greatly extend the members of 2D realm. In this review, we emphasize the recent progress made in synthesis and exploration of ternary layered materials. We first classify them in terms of stoichiometric ratio and summarize their difference in interlayer interaction, which is of great importance to produce corresponding 2D materials. The compositional and structural characteristics of resultant 2D ternary materials are then discussed so as to realize desired structures and properties. As a new family of 2D materials, we overview the layer-dependent properties and related applications in the fields of electronics, optoelectronics, and energy storage and conversion. The review finally provides a perspective for this rapidly developing field.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) metal halide materials have recently attracted much attention due to their layered structures, direct bandgap, and high absorption coefficient, rendering them promising applications for electronics and optoelectronics. In addition, they have shown remarkable tunable magnetic properties depending on layer thickness and stacking order. In this letter, recent studies on 2D metal halides and their structural and optical properties, synthesis methods, and applications are reviewed. First, their layered crystal and electronic band structures are presented. Next, synthesis methods, such as mechanical exfoliation, liquid phase method, and vapor phase deposition, are summarized. Additionally, their device performance in field-effect transistors, photodetectors, spintronics, and 2D van der Waals heterostructures are presented. Finally, some conclusions and an outlook for future research are stated.

Abstract:Elemental two-dimensional (2D) materials, characterized by unique chemical, physical, and electrical characteristics, now offer intriguing energy and catalysis application possibilities. Their 2D thin structure has constricting effects due to their large surface-to-volume ratios, good transport features, and fascinating the physicochemical characteristics. Despite the fact, that emerging elemental 2D materials such as graphene, borophene, silicone, black phosphorene, antimonene, tellurene, bismuthene, and arsenene, etc., are receiving significant attention in electronics and optoelectronic devices, as well as multiple energy storage and conversion systems, due to their remarkable structural, and electronic characteristics. Particularly, 2D materials have large surface areas, elevated theoretical capacities, structural anisotropy, excellent mobility, and tunable bandgaps, which are intriguing prospects for a variety of energy storage and conversion techniques. As main group elements such as silicon and germanium have favored the area of contemporary electronics, their monolayer 2D intermediates have shown considerable potential for next-generation electronic metals and potentially game-changing features for optoelectronics, energy, and beyond. Such atomically thin materials have expressed interesting characteristics like near-room-temperature topological insulation in bismuthene, exceptionally elevated electron mobilities in phosphorene and silicone, and significant Li-ion storage capacity in borophene. Recent advancements in the synthesis, analysis and use of several developing 2D materials have been noteworthy. We have demonstrated the basic properties, structure, importance of imperfections and functionalization, explanation of various allotropes, general structure-property correlations, categorization of conjugated polymers, and most recent advancements in the synthesis of 2D materials and their application in various sustainable diversity. In this view, we highlight the advancement of new elemental 2D materials in terms of synthesis techniques, characteristics, synthesis schemes and merit figures in energy production and catalyst purposes. In addition, we contribute our perspective on the problems and possibilities, which we hope will shed light on the enormous prospects of this ever-expanding industry.

A Novel Class of Two-Dimensional Materials: Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Abstract:This chapter discusses the atomic structures, followed by the synthesis and processing, whereas some properties and the applications. The structures or phases present in 2D TMDs are governed by many factors, including the relative stability at different temperatures as well as the synthesis/thermal treatment histories. Selected area electron diffraction shows the crystal structures in reciprocal space, while in transmission electron microscopic, especially scanning transmission electron microscopy images, the spatial and elemental information on a single atomic scale can be directly identified. Then, the exfoliation starts by removing the scotch tape, and repeated mechanical exfoliation eventually achieves monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The lack of reliable and reproducible synthesis and lack of deep understandings of some fundamental physical and chemical properties originated from their complex and nontrivial electronic structures in 2D TMDs are the most desirable and urgent targets for the whole research societies. A lot of 2D materials are originated from the vdW layered materials, which consist of the stacking of 2D layered building blocks.

Abstract:Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention in nanomaterials research because of their unique physical and chemical properties. This paper examines the research background, core properties, main application areas, and future prospects of 2D materials. Through a systematic literature review and case studies, this paper summarizes the main advances and challenges in current 2D material research. The research methodology includes a literature review and case study analysis, aiming to uncover the potential of 2D materials in nanoelectronics, optoelectronic devices, energy storage, and biomedicine. The research questions address the fundamental properties of 2D materials, their practical applications, and strategies to overcome existing challenges. The results indicate that while 2D materials like graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit excellent electronic, optical, and mechanical properties, they still encounter significant challenges in material preparation, performance tuning, and environmental safety. This paper proposes potential solutions and predicts the future applications of 2D materials in emerging technologies. The conclusion asserts that with the continuous discovery of novel 2D materials and technological advancements, 2D materials will play a crucial role in science and industry.

Abstract:With an extensive range of distinctive features at nano meter-scale thicknesses, two-dimensional (2D) materials drawn the attention of the scientific community. Despite tremendous advancements in exploratory research on 2D materials, knowledge of 2D electrical transport and carrier dynamics still in its infancy. Thus, here we highlighted the electrical characteristics of 2D materials with electronic band structure, electronic transport, dielectric constant, carriers mobility. The atomic thinness of 2D materials makes substantially scaled field-effect transistors (FETs) with reduced short-channel effects conceivable, even though strong carrier mobility required for high performance, low-voltage device operations. We also discussed here about factors affecting 2D materials which easily enhanced the activity of those materials for various applications. Presently, Those 2D materials used in state-of-the-art electrical and optoelectronic devices because of the extensive nature of their electronic band structure. 2D materials offer unprecedented freedom for the design of novel p-n junction device topologies in contrast to conventional bulk semiconductors. We also, describe the numerous 2D p-n junctions, such as homo junction and hetero junction including mixed dimensional junctions. Finally, we talked about the problems and potential for the future.
