Abstract:Corrosion protection is vital to ensure the reliability and long-term durability of metal components. Coating surfaces with two-dimensional (2D) materials is an attractive approach due to the strength, impermeability, and chemical inertness of many materials in this family. The selection of the best 2D coating relies on a detailed understanding of the interaction between 2D nanomaterials and the metal. In this paper, we report the first theoretical study on the interfacial properties of the 2D nanomaterial and metal uranium (U) using first-principles calculations. We concentrated on the study of protecting U metal surfaces because this material is very susceptible to surface corrosion, and it is of tremendous technological importance to the nuclear industry. The corrosion of U is a great challenge for its safe handling, usage, and storage. Six representative 2D nanomaterials, including graphene, h-BN, MoS2, MoSe2, and oxygen passivated Ti2C layer (Ti2CO2 and Ti2CO), were selected from the 2D material library. Our calculations show that the binding energies of graphene and h-BN are smaller than -1.0 J/m(2) on U surfaces. The binding energies of MoS2 and MoSe2 are in the range from -1.5 to -2.0 J/m(2). Ti2C-based MXenes (Ti2CO2 and Ti2CO) have binding energies larger than -2.0 J/m(2). The binding strength is traced back to the charge transfer at the interface which also leads to the quenching of surface magnetic moments. It is found that the binding strength is not sensitive to the phase and surface orientation of U metal. Among all the studied 2D nanomaterials, Ti2C-based MXenes are the most suitable coatings for U. These physical insights into the interfacial properties can provide guidance to the selection of chemically inert and thermodynamically stable 2D anticorrosion coatings that can strongly bind to the surfaces of U and other materials.

Abstract:Metals and alloys are essential in modern society, and are used in our daily activities. However, they are prone to corrosion, with the conversion of the metal/alloy to its more thermodynamically-favored oxide/hydroxide phase. These undesirable corrosion reactions can lead to the failure of metallic components. Consequently, corrosion-protective technologies are now more important than ever, as it is essential to reduce the waste of valuable resources. In this review, we consider the role of emerging 2D materials and layered materials in the development of a corrosion protection strategy. In particular, we focus on the materials beyond graphene, and consider the role of transition metal dichalcogenides, such as MoS2, MXenes, layered double hydroxides, hexagonal boron nitride and graphitic carbon nitride in the formulation of effective and protective films and coatings. Following a short introduction to the synthesis and exfoliation of the layered materials, their role in corrosion protection is described and discussed. Finally, we discuss the future applications of these 2D materials in corrosion protection.

We begin with the defect and single-atomic incorporation in graphene lattice and surface transfer doping of graphene, followed by the bandgap and mobility engineering, and the construction of versatile heterostructures of TMDCs. Although this review mainly focuses on graphene and TMDCs, it is not an exhaustive list of the experimental results, but it rather summarizes the established knowledge in surface engineering and pinpoints the most promising future trends. Abstract:Transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted increasing attention in fundamental studies and technological applications owing to their atomically thin thickness, expanded interlayer distance, motif band gap, and phase-transition ability. Even though TMDs have a wide variety of material assets from semiconductor to semimetallic to metallic, the materials with fixed features may not show excellence for precise application. As a result of exclusive crystalline polymorphs, physical and chemical assets of TMDs can be efficiently modified via various approaches of interface nanoarchitectonics, including heteroatom doping, heterostructure, phase engineering, reducing size, alloying, and hybridization. With modified properties, TMDs become interesting materials in diverse fields, including catalysis, energy, electronics, transistors, and optoelectronics.

Abstract:The surface oxidation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has recently gained tremendous technological and fundamental interest owing to the multi-functional properties that the surface oxidized layer opens up. In particular, when integrated into other 2D materials in the form of van der Waals heterostructures, oxidized TMDs enable designer properties, including novel electronic states, engineered light-matter interactions, and exceptional-point singularities, among many others. Here, the evolving landscapes of the state-of-the-art surface engineering technologies that enable controlled oxidation of TMDs down to the monolayer-by-monolayer limit are reviewed. Next, the use of oxidized TMDs in van der Waals heterostructures for different electronic and photonic device platforms, materials growth processes, engineering concepts, and synthesizing new condensed matter phenomena is discussed. Finally, challenges and outlook for future impact of oxidized TMDs in driving rapid advancements across various application fronts is discussed.

Abstract:The recent rise of 2D materials has extended the opportunities of tuning a variety of properties. Tribo-corrosion, the complex synergy between mechanical wear and chemical corrosion, poses significant challenges across numerous industries where materials are subjected to both tribological stressing and corrosive environments. This intricate interplay often leads to accelerated material degradation and failure. This review critically assesses the current state of utilizing 2D nanomaterials to enhance tribo-corrosion and -oxidation behavior. The paper summarizes the fundamental knowledge about tribo-corrosion and -oxidation mechanisms before assessing the key contributions of 2D materials, including graphene, transition metal chalcogenides, hexagonal boron nitride, MXenes, and black phosphorous, regarding the resulting friction and wear behavior. The protective roles of these nanomaterials against corrosion and oxidation are investigated, highlighting their potential in mitigating material degradation. Furthermore, we delve into the nuanced interplay between mechanical and corrosive factors in the specific application of 2D materials for tribo-corrosion and -oxidation protection. The synthesis of key findings underscores the advancements achieved through integrating 2D nanomaterials. An outlook for future research directions is provided, identifying unexplored avenues, and proposing strategies to propel the field forward. Abstract:Engineering the properties of materials is of central importance in modern science and technology. In conventional bulk materials, the property changes are realized mainly through modifying the chemical bonds and crystalline structures, or introducing dopant atoms. Recent studies in van der Waals coupled 2D layered materials have demonstrated a different way of materials engineering through modifying interlayer interactions at the material interfaces, because the interlayer interactions in these materials can be easily controlled by changing interlayer stacking configurations and/or applying external fields. In this review, recent progresses in exploring the effects of van der Waals interlayer interactions on graphene, including the discovery of van Hove singularities, Fermi velocity renormalization, and Hofstadter's butterfly pattern, are discussed. Interlayer interactions at other 2D layered material interfaces, such as transition metal dichalcogenides and black phosphorus, are also discussed. Finally, the prospects of using the van der Waals coupled 2D layered materials for next‐generation electronics and optoelectronics are presented.

Abstract:Benefitting from their unique structure and physicochemical properties, two-dimensional (2D) materials have aroused tremendous interest from academia and industry, being regarded as an important class of photocatalysts. However, their photocatalytic activities still need further improvement to satisfy the requirement of scale-up production. In this regard, the surface engineering strategy is considered as one of the most effective methods for optimizing their photocatalytic performance. This feature article not only classifies the 2D photocatalysts into layered and non-layered 2D photocatalysts and presents their preferred synthesis methods, but also summarizes the advantages of the surface engineering strategy for boosting the photocatalytic performance of 2D materials from the aspects of light absorption, charge carrier separation and surface active sites. Various surface engineering strategies, such as surface decorating, vacancy engineering, element doping, surface heterojunction construction and regulation of facet-dependent sites, have also been presented as advantages of the surface engineering strategy. Eventually, the challenges and future outlook for optimizing the photocatalytic activities of 2D materials through surface engineering are addressed.

Abstract:Designing efficient and cost-effective materials is pivotal to solving the key scientific and technological challenges at the interface of energy, environment, and sustainability for achieving NetZero. Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) represent a unique class of materials that have catered to a myriad of energy conversion and storage (ECS) applications. Their uniqueness arises from their ultra-thin nature, high fractions of atoms residing on surfaces, rich chemical compositions featuring diverse metals and chalcogens, and remarkable tunability across multiple length scales. Specifically, the rich electronic/electrical, optical, and thermal properties of 2D TMDs have been widely exploited for electrochemical energy conversion (e.g., electrocatalytic water splitting), and storage (e.g., anodes in alkali ion batteries and supercapacitors), photocatalysis, photovoltaic devices, and thermoelectric applications. Furthermore, their properties and performances can be greatly boosted by judicious structural and chemical tuning through phase, size, composition, defect, dopant, topological, and heterostructure engineering. The challenge, however, is to design and control such engineering levers, optimally and specifically, to maximize performance outcomes for targeted applications. In this review we discuss, highlight, and provide insights on the significant advancements and ongoing research directions in the design and engineering approaches of 2D TMDs for improving their performance and potential in ECS applications.

Abstract:The exceptional physical properties and unique layered structure of two-dimensional (2D) materials have made this class of materials great candidates for applications in electronics, energy conversion/storage devices, nanocomposites, and multifunctional coatings, among others. At the center of this application space, mechanical properties play a vital role in materials design, manufacturing, integration and performance. The emergence of 2D materials has also sparked broad scientific inquiry, with new understanding of mechanical interactions between 2D structures and interfaces being of great interest to the community. Building on the dramatic expansion of recent research activities, here we review significant advances in the understanding of the elastic properties, in-plane failures, fatigue performance, interfacial shear/friction, and adhesion behavior of 2D materials. In this article, special emphasis is placed on some new 2D materials, novel characterization techniques and computational methods, as well as insights into deformation and failure mechanisms. A deep understanding of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that govern 2D material mechanics is further provided, in the hopes that the community may draw design strategies for structural and interfacial engineering of 2D material systems. We end this review article with a discussion of our perspective on the state of the field and outlook on areas for future research directions.

Abstract:The unique geometry and novel properties of graphene have tremendously motivated scientists to explore other monolayer materials, especially those with separately distributed and exposed metal ions for magnetism, hydrogen storage, CO2 capture and catalysis. The recent successful synthesis of 2D organometallic sheets has opened a new pathway to design and fabricate such desirable 2D materials going beyond graphene and other inorganic sheets. This article briefly reviews the recent advances in computational studies of 2D organometallic sheets based on density functional theory, quantum chemistry modeling and Monte Carlo simulation focusing on stability, magnetic coupling, magnetism tuning, hydrogen storage, CO2 capture and catalysis. Future research directions in this field are also discussed.

Abstract:It is estimated that the annual cost of corrosion in most countries accounts for 3-4% of GDP, far exceeding the losses caused by natural disasters, prompting scientists to continuously search for high-performance anti-corrosion materials. Among these high-performance materials, two-dimensional carbon materials represented by graphene have received widespread attention due to their excellent chemical stability and anti-permeability. However, some studies have found that the poor ability of graphene to bind to the interface and the electrical coupling caused by metallicity make it possible to protect copper from corrosion only for a short period of time. To circumvent these issues, through phase behavior research, interface binding property simulation and corrosion mechanism exploration, we propose a more promising anti-corrosive three-dimensional(3D) biphenylene diamond-like carbon membrane (BP-DLC). The kinetic study results show that due to the Gibbs free energy of biphenylene structures below three layers being lower than 0, few-layer biphenylene can spontaneously generate phase transitions of limited size, forming biphenylene diamond-like membrane and exhibiting superior mechanical properties and a certain degree of flexibility. Mechanical and electronic performance results further show that there is a strong bonding effect between BP-DLC and the metal surface, which further enhances the bistate heterostructure and prolongs the coating life of BP-DLC materials. Compared with pure graphene and Cu substrates, BP-DLC membranes exhibit stronger corrosion resistance by reducing porosity, increasing charge transfer and hindering the diffusion of corrosion ions to the substrate. This study provides a new strategy for constructing corrosion-resistant materials by designing long-term stable and highly corrosion-resistant diamond-like membranes.

Abstract:In this article, we looked at metallenes, a novel class of two-dimensional (2D) metals that are attracting interest in the energy and catalysis sectors. Catalysis is one area where their exceptional physicochemical and electrical characteristics might be useful. Metallenes are unique because they include several metal atoms that are not in a coordinated bond. This makes them more active and improves their atomic utilization, which in turn increases their catalytic potential. This article delves into the potential of two-dimensional metals as electrocatalysts for carbon dioxide reduction, fuel oxidation, oxygen evolution, and oxygen reduction reactions in the context of sustainable energy conversion. Owing to the exceptionally high surface-to-volume ratio, large surface area as well as their optimized atomic use efficiency, 2D materials defined by atomic layers are crucial for surface-related sustainable energy applications. Due to its exceptional properties, such as high conductivity and the ability to enhance the exposure of active metal sites, 2D metallenes have recently attracted a lot of interest for use in catalysis, electronics, and energy-related applications. With their highly mobility, adjustable surface states, and electrical structures that can be fine-tuned, 2D metallenes are promising nanostructure materials for use in energy conversion with the sustainable applications.
