Abstract:The power of 2D: This special issue, guest edited by Liming Dai, Xinliang Feng, Zhongfan Liu, and Hua Zhang, features the various applications of two-dimensional materials for energy conversion and storage. Finding new solutions for the generation, storage, and distribution of energy is one of the most urgent scientific challenges of recent years. In order to maintain and improve our current quality of life, we must develop techniques to generate clean and renewable energy at low cost. Due to the intermittent nature of many clean energy sources and the increasing importance of electric mobility, safe and efficient energy storage is also a high priority. Although finding solutions to these problems will require a multidisciplinary approach, new materials have a crucial role to play. Owing to their many unique properties, such as high surface areas and tunable electronic and optical properties, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted significant interest for a wide variety of energy-related applications. This special issue on “2D Materials for Energy Applications” aims to highlight the important contributions to the energy field by this exciting class of materials. The papers in this issue cover everything from fundamental studies, such as Bettina V. Lotsch et al.’s work on a new fabrication method for single-layer nanosheets by silver-assisted exfoliation (featured on the front cover), to efforts to produce materials on an industrial scale, such as in the report by Francesco Bonaccorso et al. on high-power graphene–carbon nanotube hybrid supercapacitors. Several more articles also highlight the suitability of 2D materials for electrodes in both supercapacitors and batteries. Yun Zong, Zhaolin Liu et al. discuss the use of hierarchical composites of MnO2 nanosheets and carbon in zinc–air batteries, Qingyu Yan et al. report on FeS–ZnS composite nanosheets for lithium-ion batteries, and Chao Zhang, Tianxi Liu, Yi Xie et al. used supramolecular assembly to create carbon sponges from graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes for supercapacitors. Further insights and perspectives on energy-storage materials can also be found in the excellent Focus Review by Xiaoyan Zhang and Paolo Samorì on graphene/polymer nanocomposites for supercapacitors. 2D materials also show great promise for catalytic applications. In their Full Paper, Robert A. W. Dryfe et al. explore in detail the catalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction at liquid–liquid interfaces containing transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets. Although the initial interest in 2D materials first developed through the discovery of the remarkable properties of graphene, the number of materials that can be developed into 2D structures has expanded greatly in recent years. Depending on the desired application, these materials can have even more favorable properties than graphene. For example, the Communication by Hailin Peng et al. delves into the electrical and photoresponse properties of inversion asymmetric topological insulator BiTeCl nanoplates. This diversity is also highlighted through several insightful Focus Reviews discussing the synthesis and applications of different categories of 2D materials: Yanfeng Zhang et al. report on semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures, Lei Fu et al. discuss black phosphorous, and Jong-Beom Baek et al. cover 2D covalent organic frameworks. We hope that you enjoy the articles in this issue and look forward to seeing how this exciting field of research develops in the years to come. Liming Dai joined Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in fall 2009 as the Kent Hale Smith Professor in the Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering. He is also director of the Center of Advanced Science and Engineering for Carbon (CASE4Carbon). He received a BSc degree from Zhejiang University in 1983 and a PhD from the Australian National University in 1991. Dr. Dai′s expertise covers the synthesis, functionalization, and device fabrication of conjugated polymers and carbon nanomaterials for energy-related and biomedical applications. Xinliang Feng is the head of the Chair of Molecular Functional Materials at Technical University Dresden. His current scientific interests include graphene, synthetic two-dimensional materials, organic conjugated materials, and carbon-rich molecules and materials for electronic and energy-related applications. Zhongfan Liu’s current research interests focus on graphene and novel 2D atomic crystals, including the CVD growth issue, fundamental properties and practical applications. He has published over 500 peer-reviewed papers and 29 authorized patents. He is now the BOYA chair professor of Peking University, CAS member and TWAS fellow. He also serves as the director of Beijing Graphene Institute (BGI) and the Editor-in-Chief of ACTA PHYSICO-CHIMICA SINICA. Hua Zhang completed his Ph.D. with Prof. Zhongfan Liu at Peking University in China in July 1998 and joined Prof. Frans C. De Schryver's group at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium as a Research Associate in 1999. Then he moved to Prof. Chad A. Mirkin's group at Northwestern University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2001. He joined the School of Materials Science and Engineering in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) as an Assistant Professor in 2006 and was promoted to a tenured Associate Professor in 2011, and then Full Professor in 2013. His current research interests focus on the synthesis of ultrathin two-dimensional nanomaterials (e.g. metal nanosheets, graphene, metal dichalcogenides, metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, etc.) and their hybrid composites for applications in nano- and biosensors, clean energy, (opto-)electronic devices, catalysis, and water remediation; controlled synthesis, characterization and application of novel metallic and semiconducting nanomaterials, and epitaxial growth of heterostructures, etc.
