Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber laser has been proved to be an effective method to obtain ultrafast optical pulses at special wavelength. Yet, compared with conventional rare-earth doped counterparts, it is challenging for Raman fiber lasers to generate pulses with high pulse energy and short pulse duration. Here, we review three categories of ultrafast Raman fiber laser technologies and give detailed discussions on the advantages and challenges of each. In regards to mode-locking, different saturable-absorbers-based fiber lasers are compared and their common problem resulting from long cavity length are discussed. In terms of synchronously-pumping, several approaches to match the repetition rate of pulsed pump with the length of Raman fiber cavity are discussed, while the technical complexity of each method is analyzed. Moreover, the recently developed technology termed as nonlinear optical gain modulation (NOGM) is introduced, which turns out to be a simple and quality solution to generate high-energy femtosecond pulses with wavelength agility. Compared with the others, NOGM gathers various advantages including simple structure, long-term stability, high pulse energy and short pulse duration, which may effectively promote application expansion of ultrafast Raman fiber laser in the near future.

Abstract:We present our latest progresses on the development of integrated photonic devices as well as microfluidic chips of unprecedented characteristics and performances using femtosecond laser micromachining. We demonstrate ultra-high Q microresonators in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI), on-chip micro-laser and waveguide amplifier, and high-throughput micro-chemical reactor. The achievements are the result of persistent effort on improving the precision and efficiency in ultrafast laser processing.

Abstract:Coherent Raman scattering is extensively used in various fields, such as biomedical tissue imaging and pharmacokinetics, because of its significant advantages, including non-invasive detection, label-free operation, and chemical specificity. Further, we introduce the implementation and characteristics of the fiber laser sources for coherent Raman scattering (CRS) microscopy, and review the most recent advances in improving the output power, tuning range, and spectral resolution based on the dual-color synchronized ultrashort pulses via supercontinuum generation, soliton self-frequency shift, and four-wave mixing. Additionally, the latest advances in four-wave-mixing-based fiber optical parametric oscillators arc introduced. Subsequently, the temporally synchronized, spatially overlapped, and wavelength-tunable dual-color ultrashort pulses arc obtained based on dispersion filtering and polarization manipulation using the polarization-maintaining fiber and the photonic crystal fiber. Furthermore, the generated laser pulses can be used to achieve non-invasive as well as label-free spectroscopic detection and microscopic imaging for lipids, proteins, and nucleic acid, which could provide an effective methodology to realize compact, user-friendly, and environmentally stable coherent Raman scattering imaging.

Abstract:We report a fiber-based high-power picosecond laser system for coherent Raman microscopy (CRM). This source generates 3-ps pulses with 6 W average power at 1030 nm. Frequency-doubling yields more than 2 W of green light, which can be used to pump a commercial optical parametric oscillator to produce the pump and Stokes beams for CRM. The design and performance of the laser are described, along with an application to CARS imaging.

Abstract:A compact, alignment-free, and inexpensive fiber source for coherent Raman spectroscopy would benefit the field considerably. We present a fiber optical parametric oscillator offering the best performance from a fiber-source to date. Pumping the oscillator with amplified pulses from a 1 μm fiber laser, we achieve widely spaced, narrowband pulses suitable for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy. The nearly transform limited, 2 ps signal pulses are generated through the use of normal dispersion four wave mixing in photonic crystal fiber, and can be tuned from 779-808 nm, limited by the tuning range of the seed laser. The average signal power can reach 180 mW (pulse energies up to 4 nJ). The long-wavelength idler field is resonant in the oscillator, and the use of a narrow bandpass filter in the feedback loop is critical for stable operation, as seen in both simulation and experiment. Due to the self-consistent nature of the oscillator, this source provides lower relative intensity noise on its output pulses than parametric amplifiers based on the same frequency conversion process. We present high quality images of mouse tissues taken with this source that exhibit an outstanding signal to noise ratio at top imaging speeds.

Abstract:Stimulated Raman Scattering microscopy allows label-free chemical imaging and has enabled exciting applications in biology, material science, and medicine. It provides a major advantage in imaging speed over spontaneous Raman scattering and has improved image contrast and spectral fidelity compared to coherent anti-Stokes Raman. Wider adoption of the technique has, however, been hindered by the need for a costly and environmentally sensitive tunable ultra-fast dual-wavelength source. We present the development of an optimized all-fibre laser system based on the optical synchronization of two picosecond power amplifiers. To circumvent the high-frequency laser noise intrinsic to amplified fibre lasers, we have further developed a high-speed noise cancellation system based on voltage-subtraction autobalanced detection. We demonstrate uncompromised imaging performance of our fibre-laser based stimulated Raman scattering microscope with shot-noise limited sensitivity and an imaging speed up to 1 frame/s.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fiber-based two-color source of picosecond pulses for coherent Raman scattering (CRS) microscopy. An Yb-doped fiber laser combined with a divided-pulse amplifier produce up to 3 W of power tunable from 1030 nm to 1040 nm. A normal dispersion photonic crystal fiber is used to blue-shift the pulses through seeded four-wave mixing. Pulses with up to 150 mW of average power are produced, tunable between 770 nm and 800 nm. Imaging of animal tissue and cells is demonstrated.

Abstract:Optical microfibers drawn from conventional fibers have attracted considerable interests and have found many novel applications. Here, we review recent advances in ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers. Starting with characteristics and fabrication of optical microfibers, which are closely related to ultrafast fiber lasers, we show that characteristics of large portion of evanescent field, tailorable dispersion, high optical nonlinearity, very low optical loss and full compatibility with conventional fibers are greatly beneficial to novel ultrafast fiber lasers. We then highlight recent works on ultrafast fiber lasers based on optical microfibers in terms of fast saturable absorbers made from optical microfiber-supported nanomaterials, dispersion management and high optical nonlinearity, as well as some other novel ultrafast fiber lasers. Finally, we briefly discuss future opportunities for optical microfiber-based ultrafast fiber lasers, such as high-order dispersion management, nonlinearity management and applications for sensing and measurement.

Abstract:Mode-locking and ultrashort pulse synchronous pumping arc the main ways to obtain ultrashort pulses from Raman fiber lasers. In the mode-locked Raman fiber lasers, high performance output can be achieved in the structure with equivalent saturable absorbers, but the limitation caused by the long gain fiber remains. The method of synchronous pumping can overcome this problem effectively and achieve excellent ultrafast Raman laser output. There is a great potential for the ultrafast Raman fiber laser technology, and future research will focus on further improving the overall performance of various ultrafast Raman fiber lasers and investigating new phenomena observed in these laser systems.

Abstract:We present a fiber-format picosecond light source for coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscopy. Pulses from a Yb-doped fiber amplifier are frequency converted by four-wave mixing (FWM) in normal-dispersion photonic crystal fiber to produce a synchronized two-color picosecond pulse train. We show that seeding the FWM process overcomes the deleterious effects of group-velocity mismatch and allows efficient conversion into narrow frequency bands. The source generates more than 160 mW of nearly transform-limited pulses tunable from 775 to 815 nm. High-quality coherent Raman images of animal tissues and cells acquired with this source are presented. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Ultrafast Raman fiber lasers are wavelength-agile light sources for various scientific and medical applications. Pulse pumping is an efficient way to generate a high power ultrafast Raman fiber laser, which however requires real-time synchronization between the pump pulses and laser cavity. A pulse pumped Raman fiber laser with random distributed feedback is investigated. Under repetitive pulse pumping, compound cavities based on distributed Rayleigh scattering are formed automatically to synchronize with the pump pulse train. In a proof of principle experiment, self-synchronization is observed and a stable picosecond pulsed random laser is generated at 1120 nm with an average power of 170 mW. Raman gain and random distributed feedback are spatially separated in the present pulse pumped laser configuration. This allows a direct characterization of the random distributed feedback and a comparison between random lasing and amplified spontaneous emission, which is not possible in previous continuous wave pumped random Raman fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this paper, an efficient high-power 1.9 μm picosecond Raman laser through pure vibrational stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in H 2 -filled hollow-core fiber (HCF) is demonstrated. The maximum Raman conversion efficiency of 34 % and the Raman power of 7.3 W (36.5 μJ) is achieved within a 130 cm length of our in-house fabricated fiber. By controlling the H 2 pressure, the high-order Stokes and rotational Stokes/anti-Stokes will not be generated, thereby enhancing the efficacy of the 1st Stokes conversion. In addition, the vibrational anti-Stokes are produced inevitably, which can be explained by the phase-matching of higher-order modes. Our results show SRS in H 2 -filled HCF to be a promising method for generating high-power 1.9 μm picosecond pulses, which are valuable in spectroscopy, defense, and efficient nonlinear conversion.

Abstract:A synchronously pumped fiber Raman laser (SPFRL) operating at 1.7 μm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Through the third harmonic pumping by a 1563 nm picosecond pulsed fiber laser, the Stokes pulses are generated with an average power of 1.9 W, a pulse duration of 21 ps, and a repetition frequency of 52.9 MHz. The center wavelength and the 3-dB bandwidth are 1694.3 nm and 0.96 nm respectively. This work provides a pathway to a power scalable ultrafast laser at 1.7 µm via a compact and elegant all-fiber solution.

Abstract:We have proposed and implemented a polarization-maintaining passively synchronized fiber laser system, which could deliver tunable dual-color picosecond pulses by including a frequency-doubling module and a spectral broadening module. Specifically, the output from the involved Er-doped fiber laser were used to generate second-harmonic pulses at 790 nm with a quadratic nonlinear crystal. In parallel, the amplified pulses from the synchronized Yb-doped fiber laser were launched into a 150-m single mode fiber, which resulted in not only substantial spectral bandwidth broadening from 0.1 to 20.1 nm, but also a significant Raman-induced signal around 1080 nm. Consequently, narrow spectra from 1018-1051 nm and 1070-1095 nm could be continuously tuned via a tunable bandpass filter, corresponding to Raman bonds from 2835-3143 cm−1 and 3312-3525 cm−1. Finally, the achieved tunable synchronized pulses enabled us to microscopically examine mouse ear samples based on coherent anti-Stokes Raman and second harmonic generation imaging. Therefore, our tunable passively-synchronized fiber laser system would be promising to provide a simple and compact laser source for subsequent coherent Raman microscopy.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new approach to implement a wavelength-tunable ultrafast fiber laser source suitable for multiphoton microscopy. We employ fiber-optic nonlinearities to broaden a narrowband optical spectrum generated by an Yb-fiber laser system and then use optical bandpass filters to select the leftmost or rightmost spectral lobes from the broadened spectrum. Detailed numerical modeling shows that self-phase modulation dominates the spectral broadening, self-steepening tends to blue shift the broadened spectrum, and stimulated Raman scattering is minimal. We also find that optical wave breaking caused by fiber dispersion slows down the shift of the leftmost/rightmost spectral lobes and therefore limits the wavelength tuning range of the filtered spectra. We show both numerically and experimentally that shortening the fiber used for spectral broadening while increasing the input pulse energy can overcome this dispersion-induced limitation; as a result, the filtered spectral lobes have higher power, constituting a powerful and practical approach for energy scaling the resulting femtosecond sources. We use two commercially available photonic crystal fibers to verify the simulation results. More specific, use of 20-mm fiber NL-1050-ZERO-2 enables us to implement an Yb-fiber laser based ultrafast source, delivering femtosecond (70-120 fs) pulses tunable from 825 nm to 1210 nm with > 1 nJ pulse energy.
