Abstract:Calcium hexaluminate (CA6) was synthesized using industrial γ-Al2O3 and CaO (w(CaO)≥99.0%) as starting materials. The starting materials were weighed according to n(CaO): n(γ-Al2O3) of 0.66, 0.86, 1.06, 1.26, and 1.46, respectively, ball milled, dried, and then dry pressed into specimens with the size of 6 mm×6 mm×40 mm. The specimens were fired at 1 550 °C for 3 h. Phase composition and microstructure of fired specimens were analyzed by XRD and SEM; volume shrinkage, apparent porosity, bulk density, and cold modulus of rupture were determined. The results show that: (1) the main phase of all the specimens with different molar ratios of CaO and γ-Al2O3 is CA6. A little α-Al2O3 is observed when the formulation is alumina-rich, and a small amount of CA2 is detected when the formulation is calcia-rich; (2) CA6 of all specimens is lamellar. For the formulation with rich alumina, the lamellar CA6 is obvious with clear profile. For the formulation with rich calcia, CA2 doesn't convert into CA6 completely because of short alumina; (3) when the molar ratio of CaO to γ-Al2O3 is 0.66, the specimen has the highest volume shrinkage. When it is 1.46, the specimen has the lowest apparent porosity and the highest bulk density. When it is 0.86, the specimen has the highest cold crushing strength of 30.9 MPa.
