Abstract:Due to the hexagonally close-packed (hep) structure of magnesium, magnesium and its alloys exhibit a strong anisotropy and an unlike yielding in tension and compression. Twinning is always regarded as the dominant deformation mode at low temperatures in magnesium and its alloys. Therefore it is important to study the influence of vacancies and linear defects on the movement of twin for a further understanding of the plastic deformation mechanisms of magnesium alloys. In this work, molecular dynamics simulation has been applied to investigate the movement of the [10 (1) over bar2]: twin. A linear defect is created near the twin boundary. The simulation results indicate that the linear defect impedes twin movement. However, when the applied strain is increasing, the twin can pass through the linear defect, and a similar phase transition region is left behind the twin boundary.
