Abstract:We propose a novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion in a system with a phase modulator (PM) and a delay-line interferometer (DLI). The phase modulation and interferometric demodulation techniques are employed to realize quantization and encoding. In the system, the phase-modulated signal is optically sampled by a multiwavelength pulsed source and the phase-shifted transfer functions of the DLI under different wavelengths are used for encoding. In the approach, the differential signal, but not the original analog signal, is encoded, which increases the equivalent number of bits. In addition, the balanced detection technique can be incorporated into the system to alleviate the influences of amplitude and timing jitter.

Abstract:A photonic quantization approach to implementing analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in the optical domain with differential encoding employing a phase modulator and delay-line interferometers (DLIs) is proposed and demonstrated. In the proposed ADC system, the phase-modulated signal is sent to an array of DLIs that have identical time delay difference, but different phase shifts, which are employed to achieve quantization with differential encoding. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed. The quantization of a 10 GHz sinusoidal signal with a bit length of 4 is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion with Gray-code-like property is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of using Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with different half-wave voltages, an array of MZMs with identical half-wave voltages are applied to realize quantization and encoding, which greatly simplifies the implementation. Multiple comparators with preset thresholds are applied at the output of each MZM to improve the number of bits. Through properly setting the bias voltages of the MZMs, a photonic analog to digital converter (ADC) based on the robust symmetrical number system (RSNS) coding method is realized. As an example, a 3-channel structure with maximum quantization level of 17 (corresponding to 4.09 bits) is investigated in detail. We show that the differential encoding technique can be applied in the proposed structure, which increases the equivalent number of bits of the ADC system.

Abstract:An improved photonic analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) scheme using Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) is proposed and demonstrated. In the approach, all the MZMs have the same electrode length, which eliminates the need of MZMs with very low half-wave voltages as in the scheme using MZM array with geometrically-scaled half-wave voltages. An electric circuit is employed to realize linear combinations of the detected signals (including subtraction and addition). By properly biasing the MZMs and setting the thresholding voltages in the comparators, a digital Gray-code output is obtained. The proposed ADC scheme can effectively improve the bit resolution compared with the previous photonic ADCs based on the phase-shifting technique. Theoretical analysis and proof-of-concept experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Abstract:A novel scheme of spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital converter is proposed. Cascaded lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators are used to convert the amplitude of the electrical analog signal to the shift of the transmission characteristic, and a set of interleaving spectral filters perform as the optical comparators. Compared with usual spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital converter, particular benefit of our proposed scheme is no requirement of nonlinear effects to realize spectral quantization and encoding.

Abstract:A novel 2-bit PDAC based on quadrature phase modulation and differential demodulation together with balanced detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at sampling rates of 2.5GS/s and 10GS/s. The simulation results of expanded 4-bit PDAC from the 2-bit PDAC unit by using two channels of incoherent light with different wavelength are presented. This PDAC scheme is simple, compact and effective with high expansibility. Compared with other approaches, this method's output signal has a greater dynamic range and a higher noise margin.

Abstract:A novel approach for photonic quantization using dual-output Mach–Zehnder modulators (DOMZMs) and balanced photodetectors (BPDs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on the phase-shifting technique, all DOMZMs used in the scheme have identical half-wave voltages but are biased at different voltages. Due to the use of BPDs and DOMZMs with complementary outputs, the threshold voltages of comparators can be kept at zero, which eliminates the influence of power fluctuation of the input sampling pulses and improves the effective number of bits (ENOB) of the analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) system. After the comparators, a digital Gray code that represents the analog signal to be digitized is obtained. Proof-of-concept experiments with 8 and 16 quantization levels are implemented to verify the feasibility of the proposed approach. Bit resolution, ENOB degradation induced by bias voltage errors and potential for photonic integration are also discussed.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme of a spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Several cascaded unbalanced lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators with doubling path length imbalances are used to convert the amplitude of the electrical analog signal to the shift of the transmission characteristic. Compared with former spectral encoded photonic ADCs, a particular benefit of our presented scheme is no requirement of any nonlinear effect to realize optical quantization.

Abstract:In recent years, some approaches to realize photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on spectral encoding have been proposed. In these approaches, the amplitude information of input analog signals is first converted into the frequency information of the optical carrier via a nonlinear process, which is equivalent to optical frequency modulation; then, the spectral information of the optical carrier is quantized and encoded with the help of an optical filter group. In this letter, we propose, for the first time to our knowledge, that the time-frequency uncertainty principle puts a fundamental limit on this type of photonic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The condition for achieving acceptable performance in terms of effective number of bits is discussed. The presented theoretical results are verified by numerical simulations and a proof-of-concept experiment in electrical domain. We believe that the presented result is important to the design of spectral-encoding-based photonic ADCs.

Abstract:A photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) scheme based on multi-wavelength sampling and balanced. detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the approach, a power-weighted multi-wavelength pulsed source is employed to implement sampling, a dispersion element is used to realize temporal walk-off of multi-wavelength pulses, and a thresholding module is applied to implement serial thresholding. The principles of quantization and encoding are similar to that of an electronic flash ADC, but the serial implementation in the given approach avoids the use of large numbers of comparators. A proof-of-concept experiment with three wavelengths is successfully demonstrated. We also discuss the feasibility of the approach and the design of non-uniform quantization by properly setting the power ratio of the multi-wavelength pulses. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel 2N bit bipolar photonic digital-to-analog converter (PDAC) scenario based on the optical differential quadrature phase shift keying (ODQPSK) modulation coupled with differential detection is proposed. Compared with other proposed schemes, this bipolar PDAC has a greater dynamic range and a larger noise margin with good scalabilities both in speed and resolution. We demonstrate a 4 bit PDAC in a proof-of-principle experiment at a sampling rate of 2.5 GS/s.

Some typical schemes and operation principles of photonic ADCs, including photonic sampling ADCs, photonic quantizing ADCs, photonic sampling & quantizing ADCs and photonic assisted ADCs, are summarized and analyzed. In addition, some recent breakthrough results in the photonic ADCs are introduced.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel photonic analog-to-digital conversion method is proposed, theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. This method features simple configuration, because only one polarization modulator, several polarization controllers and several polarizers are required. Furthermore, this method mitigated the problem of bias-drift, which is common in some previous intensity modulating schemes.

Abstract:A novel approach of a phase shifted all-optical analog-to-digital converter with double parallel intensity modulator is proposed and demonstrated.The phase shift of quantization curve is simply realized by optical attenuation.The proposed scheme can solve the problem of pulse walk-off,and low precision of phase shift in the present phase shifting quantization schemes as well as the influence of environment and temperature.In this scheme,the outputs of two parallel LiNbO3 intensity modulators are split into 4 channels with an optical attenuator inserted in each channel.By appropriately adjusting the optical attenuators,the phase shift between two adjacent channels is achieved,thus 8-channel optical quantizer is realized with resolution of4 bits.In the experiment,a10 GHz sinusoidal input signal is quantized using this scheme with an effective number of3.7 bits.The deviation from the ideal case is only0.3 bits.This result donates that the proposed approach is feasible,and has a relatively high effective number of bits compared with the present schemes.

Abstract:An approach to implement photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital conversion and its calibration method are presented. The analog modulated optical signal is divided into M channels, suffering different time delay induced by optical delay lines which provide great flexibility in producing time intervals and is then sampled by electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The channel mismatches resulting in performance degradation are estimated by a modified sine wave fitting method. The time mismatch and other mismatches are corrected by fine optical delay adjustment and digital processing, respectively. A four-channel photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TIADC) system operating at 40 GSa s(-1) was demonstrated experimentally. The photonic-assisted TIADC system was tested with a 6.31 GHz sine wave signal, exhibiting 40.3 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) and 57.6 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). It is shown that the SINAD is dominated by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the analog optical link and the SFDR of the proposed system is limited by the linearity of the link.

Abstract:An approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on photonic time stretch and compressive sensing (CS) technique is proposed. A multi-tone signal (spectrally sparse) within a 20 GHz bandwidth is investigated. The wideband signal is firstly stretched in the time domain by a photonic time-stretcher and then reconstructed by CS based on random demodulator (RD). The random mixing in RD is realized optically with a spatial light modulator (SLM). Thanks to the techniques of time stretch and CS, wideband spectrally-sparse signals can be acquired effectively with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate. A system with time stretch factor 10 and compression factor 8, which means a 1/80 of the Nyquist rate, is illustrated.

Abstract:An adaptive thresholding scheme in photonic analog-to-digital conversion is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Instead of a single-ended electronic comparator, differential detection technology is used to reduce the quantization noise induced by thresholding error. The main advantages of this scheme are the elimination of the dynamic setting of thresholding level and better tolerance to common-mode noise.

Abstract:A novel approach of an all-optical analog-to-digital converter is proposed and demonstrated. One single-phase modulator and a continuous-wave laser diode are used to quantize the sinusoidal tone analog signal. Software sampling measurements yielded an effective number of bits of 4.1. Benefits of the proposed setup are its simple design, high bandwidth, and stability. The scheme is primarily limited in the optical domain by the speed of the phase modulator and in electronic domain by electrical comparators and logic devices.

Abstract:Asymmetrie lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder interferometer and its applications in photonic analog-to-digital conversion will be discussed. Two schemes based on the asymmetric interferometer will be proposed and analyzed. The first scheme is the phase shift photonic analog-to-digital conversion using asymmetric interferometer and synchronized multi-wavelength optical sampling pulses. Because of the dispersion effect of the lithium niobate crystal, when multi-wavelength optical pulses enter into the interferometer, at the output port, different wavelengths will have different phase differences between two arms. As a result, after interference, the transmission characteristics of different wavelengths will have a phase shift between each other, and this is just the key issue of phase shift photonic analog-to-digital conversion. The other scheme we will propose in this paper is a spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital conversion. The spectral transmission characteristic of the asymmetric interferometer will shift with the voltage change of the analog signal, and this shift has an ideal linear relation with the analog voltage change. The peak wavelength of the transmission spectrum can be detected to realize quantization of the applied analog signal. Using both schemes presented in this paper, high sampling rate and high resolution optical analog-to-digital conversion can be realized. © 2008 SPIE.
