Abstract:A novel method of photonic arbitrary waveform generation is presented, which combines photonic digital-to-analog conversion technique and IQ upconversion. A 2-bit prototype is built experimentally and a linear frequency-modulated waveform with a bandwidth of 4 GHz is synthesized with a 2-GHz baseband width.

Abstract:A novel digital-to-analog converter based on multi-wavelength pulse source is proposed and primarily demonstrated by experiment. The multi-wavelength pulse train which has been pretreated is separated in time domain through dispersion. The pulse of different wavelength corresponds to the input digital data. Only one electro-optical modulator is needed in the scheme. In the primary experiment, a 3-bit photonic digital-to-analog converter with a sample rate of 2.5 Gb/s is realized. The scheme is simple and compact compared with the scheme using multiple electro-optical modulators.

Abstract:Photonic techniques have potential to overcome the limitations of electronic digital-to-analog conversion. A serial optical DAC, using fiber dispersion with optical weighted wavelength multiplexing, is proposed and demonstrated. Serial Digital codes are overlapped regularly in time domain due to dispersion-based delays. Intensity information for the conversion is extracted by synchronous gating pulse train. The system is operated with a high precision time control. Performance of the ODAC is experimentally investigated by establishing a 4-b 12.5 Gb/s system. The linear transfer function is described and an ENOB of 3.55 is obtained. The proposed architecture could be easily modified for better performance.

Abstract:An approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion based on photonic time stretch and compressive sensing (CS) technique is proposed. A multi-tone signal (spectrally sparse) within a 20 GHz bandwidth is investigated. The wideband signal is firstly stretched in the time domain by a photonic time-stretcher and then reconstructed by CS based on random demodulator (RD). The random mixing in RD is realized optically with a spatial light modulator (SLM). Thanks to the techniques of time stretch and CS, wideband spectrally-sparse signals can be acquired effectively with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate. A system with time stretch factor 10 and compression factor 8, which means a 1/80 of the Nyquist rate, is illustrated.

Abstract:A novel scheme of optical analog-to-digital conversion system is proposed based on compressive sampling and the recent electrical modulated wideband converter. The proposed optical solution is more stable and implementable in practice. Because of the ultranarrow optical pulseswidth, the proposed solution can provide a uniform signal-to-noise attenuate of all frequency bins, compared to its electrical counterpart.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion in a system with a phase modulator (PM) and a delay-line interferometer (DLI). The phase modulation and interferometric demodulation techniques are employed to realize quantization and encoding. In the system, the phase-modulated signal is optically sampled by a multiwavelength pulsed source and the phase-shifted transfer functions of the DLI under different wavelengths are used for encoding. In the approach, the differential signal, but not the original analog signal, is encoded, which increases the equivalent number of bits. In addition, the balanced detection technique can be incorporated into the system to alleviate the influences of amplitude and timing jitter.

Abstract:A photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC) scheme based on multi-wavelength sampling and balanced. detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In the approach, a power-weighted multi-wavelength pulsed source is employed to implement sampling, a dispersion element is used to realize temporal walk-off of multi-wavelength pulses, and a thresholding module is applied to implement serial thresholding. The principles of quantization and encoding are similar to that of an electronic flash ADC, but the serial implementation in the given approach avoids the use of large numbers of comparators. A proof-of-concept experiment with three wavelengths is successfully demonstrated. We also discuss the feasibility of the approach and the design of non-uniform quantization by properly setting the power ratio of the multi-wavelength pulses. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:An approach to realizing wideband analog-to-digital conversion based on the techniques of photonic time stretch (PTS) and compressive sensing (CS) is proposed. In the system, a multitone signal within a wide bandwidth (spectrally sparse) signal is slowed down in the time domain by a photonic time stretcher. The stretched signal is then down-sampled and reconstructed by a random-demodulator-based CS scheme, in which random mixing is realized in an optical domain. Thanks to the techniques of PTS and CS, wideband spectrally sparse signals can be acquired with a sampling rate far below the Nyquist rate of the original signal. The optical random mixing applied in the system has the advantages of lower distortions and larger bandwidth compared to its electrical counterpart. In order to construct a Gaussian measurement matrix with zero mean, balanced detection is applied after the optical mixer. In addition, in order to eliminate the dc component and the even-order harmonics of the stretched signal, we propose to use balanced PTS technique in the system. We demonstrate that a system with a time stretch factor 20 and a compression factor 4 can effectively acquire a spectrally sparse wideband signal, which means a sampling rate as low as 1/80 of the Nyquist rate.

Abstract:A novel approach to realizing photonic analog-to-digital conversion with Gray-code-like property is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of using Mach–Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with different half-wave voltages, an array of MZMs with identical half-wave voltages are applied to realize quantization and encoding, which greatly simplifies the implementation. Multiple comparators with preset thresholds are applied at the output of each MZM to improve the number of bits. Through properly setting the bias voltages of the MZMs, a photonic analog to digital converter (ADC) based on the robust symmetrical number system (RSNS) coding method is realized. As an example, a 3-channel structure with maximum quantization level of 17 (corresponding to 4.09 bits) is investigated in detail. We show that the differential encoding technique can be applied in the proposed structure, which increases the equivalent number of bits of the ADC system.

Abstract:This work introduces a novel architecture for implementing a parallel coherent photonic digital-to-analog converter (PDAC), designed to transform parallel digital electrical signals into corresponding analog optical output, convertible to analog electrical signals using photodiodes. The proposed architecture incorporates microring resonator-based modulators (MRMs), phase shifters, and symmetric multimode interference couplers. Efficient modulation is achieved by MRMs utilizing carrier depletion-induced refractive index changes, while metal heaters facilitate tuning of the ring resonator resonance wavelength. The proposed architecture is scalable to higher bit resolutions and exhibits a dynamic range limited by MRM's sensitivity to applied bias and noise levels. Experimental results of the fabricated chip in the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform showcase the successful realization of a 4 GSample/sec conversion rate in a 2-bit resolution operation, along with a stationary conversion of four parallel DC digital signals into 16 analog intensity levels in a 4-bit PDAC configuration. The study encompasses a proof-of-concept experimental demonstration of 8 Gbps data conversion, along with a 50 Gbps data conversion rate using the optimized design in the simulation, affirming the accuracy and quality of the PDAC architecture. These findings contribute to the advancement of PDAC technology, providing insights into performance characteristics, limitations, and potential applications.

Abstract:A novel scheme of spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital converter is proposed. Cascaded lithium niobate Mach-Zehnder modulators are used to convert the amplitude of the electrical analog signal to the shift of the transmission characteristic, and a set of interleaving spectral filters perform as the optical comparators. Compared with usual spectral encoded photonic analog-to-digital converter, particular benefit of our proposed scheme is no requirement of nonlinear effects to realize spectral quantization and encoding.

Abstract:An approach to implement photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital conversion and its calibration method are presented. The analog modulated optical signal is divided into M channels, suffering different time delay induced by optical delay lines which provide great flexibility in producing time intervals and is then sampled by electronic analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The channel mismatches resulting in performance degradation are estimated by a modified sine wave fitting method. The time mismatch and other mismatches are corrected by fine optical delay adjustment and digital processing, respectively. A four-channel photonic-assisted time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TIADC) system operating at 40 GSa s(-1) was demonstrated experimentally. The photonic-assisted TIADC system was tested with a 6.31 GHz sine wave signal, exhibiting 40.3 dB signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) and 57.6 dBc spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). It is shown that the SINAD is dominated by the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the analog optical link and the SFDR of the proposed system is limited by the linearity of the link.

Abstract:Wavelength conversion and five-channel multicasting for 20 Gbit/s quadrature phase-shift keying signals have been experimentally demonstrated based on four-wave mixing in a silicon waveguide with digital coherent detection. The eye diagrams and constellation diagrams of the converted and multicasting idlers are successfully observed. Moreover, the bit-error rates (BERs) of the generated idlers are measured and the power penalties are all less than 0.7 dB at a BER of 3×10(-3).

Abstract:A novel 2-bit PDAC based on quadrature phase modulation and differential demodulation together with balanced detection is proposed and experimentally demonstrated at sampling rates of 2.5GS/s and 10GS/s. The simulation results of expanded 4-bit PDAC from the 2-bit PDAC unit by using two channels of incoherent light with different wavelength are presented. This PDAC scheme is simple, compact and effective with high expansibility. Compared with other approaches, this method's output signal has a greater dynamic range and a higher noise margin.

Abstract:We propose a new type of photonic analog-to-digital converter (ADC), designed for high-resolution (>7 bit) and high sampling rates (scalable to tens of GS/s). It is based on encoding the input analog voltage signal onto the phase of an optical pulse stream originating from a mode-locked laser, and uses spatial oversampling as a means to improve the conversion resolution. This paper describes the concept of spatial oversampling and draws its similarities to the commonly used temporal oversampling. The design and fabrication of a LiNbO(3)/silica hybrid photonic integrated circuit for implementing the spatial oversampling is shown, and its abilities are demonstrated experimentally by digitizing gigahertz signals (frequencies up to 18GHz) at an undersampled rate of 2.56GS/s with a conversion resolution of up to 7.6 effective bits. Oversampling factors of 1-4 are demonstrated.

Abstract:Compressive sensing (CS) in the photonic domain is highly promising for analog-to-information conversion of sparse signals due to its potential capability of high input bandwidth and digitization with sub-Nyquist sampling. In this paper, we suggest that the concept of delay-line based microwave photonic filter be used in photonic CS to realize the low-pass filtering (LPF) function which is required in CS. A microwave photonic filter (MPF) with a dispersive element and fiber delay lines is applied in photonic CS to achieve better performance and flexibility. In the approach, the input radio-frequency signal and the pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) are modulated on a multi-wavelength optical carrier and propagate through a dispersive element. The modulated optical signal is split into multiple channels with tunable delay lines. The multiple wavelengths, dispersive element and multiple channels constitute a reconfigurable low-pass microwave filter. Experiment and simulations are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and potentials of this approach.
