Abstract:The sulfur transformations in biomass combustion have been experimentally investigated in this paper, and the experimental result indicated that the sulfur transformations are mainly related to temperature, formation of sulfur, ash components and gas-solid reaction. In fixed-bed combustion, where gas-solid reaction is weak, organic sulfur in biomass was mostly released at early stage of combustion under low temperature of 550°C, while inorganic sulfur releasing show a strong correlation with ash components: during combustion of Si-rich sugar cane leaves, sulfur release increased rapidly in the temperature range of 850-1050°C; whereas for combustion of Ca-rich and Si-lean bark, sulfur release was much less temperature-dependent, unless the combustion temperature exceeded 1000°C, under which sulfur release became significant due to the evaporation of metal sulfates. K, Ca and other alkaline minerals in biomass ash have a very good desulfurization activity when the combustion temperature was controlled below 800°C, sulfur oxides could be captured by alkaline minerals due to excellent gas-solid reaction condition in the CFB combustor, in which very high sulfur retention was achieved in the experiments.
