Abstract:Homogeneously dispersed ceria nanocatalyst can be synthesized and stabilized with ordered mesoporous alumina by a one‐step sol–gel method. This novel material possesses high thermal stability and exhibits 100% conversion at room temperature for CO oxidation when loaded with Au. This established approach can be expanded to the controlled synthesis and stabilization of other nanocatalysts with wide applications.

Crystal Facet Induced Single-Atom Pd/CoxOyon a Tunable Metal-Support Interface for Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation

Abstract:Atomic dispersed metal sites in single-atom catalysts are highly mobile and easily sintered to form large particles, which deteriorates the catalytic performance severely. Moreover, lack of criterion concerning the role of the metal-support interface prevents more efficient and wide application. Here, a general strategy is reported to synthesize stable single atom catalysts by crafting on a variety of cobalt-based nanoarrays with precisely controlled architectures and compositions. The highly uniform, well-aligned, and densely packed nanoarrays provide abundant oxygen vacancies (17.48%) for trapping Pd single atoms and lead to the creation of 3D configured catalysts, which exhibit very competitive activity toward low temperature CO oxidation (100% conversion at 90 degrees C) and prominent long-term stability (continuous conversion at 60 degrees C for 118 h). Theoretical calculations show that O vacancies at high-index {112} facet of Co(x)O(y)nanocrystallite are preferential sites for trapping single atoms, which guarantee strong interface adhesion of Pd species to cobalt-based support and play a pivotal role in preventing the decrement of activity, even under moisture-rich conditions (approximate to 2% water vapor). The progress presents a promising opportunity for tailoring catalytic properties consistent with the specific demand on target process, beyond a facile design with a tunable metal-support interface.

Abstract:AbstractThe present study focuses on synthesis of SAPO-34 zeolite membrane on the surface of CuO–ZnO–Al2O3 (CZA) catalyst particles to form CZA@SAPO-34 core@shell structured catalyst. In contrast to the traditional support of porous alumina, CZA catalyst particles have a relatively brittle surface, which leads to a big challenge to coat SAPO-34 zeolite membrane on their surface. Moreover, the hydrothermal synthesis of SAPO-34 zeolite membrane is carried out under weakly alkaline condition at 200 °C for hours, which causes part of the surface of CZA to be fragmented. To overcome these shortcomings, the intermediate layer of alumina is introduced to the surface of the CZA particles and acts as a barrier to the high-temperature hydrothermal and alkaline condition. It also takes as a transition to enhance SAPO-34 zeolite seeds adherence to the surface of CZA particles. With the help of an alumina layer, a continuous and dense zeolite membrane has been obtained on the surface of CZA particles. The prepared core@shell structured catalyst has better selectivity in CO hydrogenation for producing light hydrocarbons because of the synergetic effects between the membrane and core catalyst.

Abstract:A series of ordered mesoporous CoAl2O4 spinel-based metal oxides with different Co content were facilely synthesized via a one-step evaporation-induced self-assembly method and utilized as catalysts for CO2 reforming of CH4. These mesoporous catalysts, which have unique textural properties and outstanding thermal stabilities, exhibited excellent catalytic performances under various reaction conditions. The ordered mesostructures in the catalysts could provide sufficiently accessible Co active sites for gaseous reactants and stabilize Co metallic nanoparticles via confinement effects within the mesoporous frameworks. These mesoporous catalysts exhibited better anti-coke abilities than non-mesoporous catalysts or traditional supported catalysts, thus acting as a promising series of potential catalyst candidates for CO2 reforming of CH4.

Abstract:The key concept to simplify the synthesis steps of core shell nanocomposites is to synthesize the core and shell components together without tedious separation and purification steps. In addition, the sintering problems of carbon spheres during the high-temperature carbonization process need to be addressed with the aim of obtaining monodisperse carbon nanospheres. Through extension of our reported silica-assisted strategy, a facile one-pot strategy is reported here to synthesize noble metal@mesoporous carbon (NM@MC) core-shell colloids in which the formation and encapsulation processes of noble metal nanoparticles happen simultaneously through a series of synergetic reactions. The resulting NM@MC colloidal nanospheres show uniform and highly dispersed morphology, tunable size, high surface area, and clear core shell structure with abundant mesopores. In particular, the Au@MC colloid shows significantly high catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminopheol thanks to the excellent catalytic performance of the Au inner core and fast mass transfer of the mesoporous carbon shell.

Abstract:Noble metal/transition metal (hydr) oxide interfaces are often highly active catalytic sites for many oxidation reactions. One of the challenges in such catalyst systems especially in high-temperature reactions is the lack of an effective mechanism to stabilize the catalysts against sintering over time and to maintain the metal/oxide interfaces. Herein, we report an alloying-dealloying process for the production of ultrafine Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates (similar to 1.8 nm) with confinement in silica nanoshells for effective stabilization. The synthesis started with coating of ultrasmall Pt/Fe precursor nanoparticles in reverse micelles by a microporous silica shell, which served as a nanoreactor to allow the subsequent transformation of the precursor nanoparticles into the target Pt/FeOx nanoconjugates. Thanks to the ultrasmall size of the nanoconjugates and their effective protection by the silica shells, the resulting Pt/FeOx@SiO2 yolk/shell nanospheres showed high catalytic activity and remarkable durability in preferential CO oxidation in H-2 (PROX). This synthesis strategy may represent a general approach in rational design of highly stable catalysts with complex nanostructures for a broad range of catalysis.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous alumina facilely synthesized via improved evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) strategy was provided with large specific surface area, big pore volume, uniform pore size and excellent thermal stability. The obtained mesoporous material was used as the carrier of the Ni based catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. These mesoporous catalysts performed high catalytic activity and long stability. Typically, the catalytic conversions of the CH4 and CO2 were greatly close to the equilibrium conversion and no deactivation was observed during the 100 h long lifetime test. The advantageous structural properties of ordered mesoporous alumina contributed to high dispersion of the Ni particles among the mesoporous framework, which further accounted for the good catalytic activity due to more "accessible" Ni active sites for the reactants. The "confinement effect" of the mesopores could effectively prevent the thermal sintering of the Ni nanoparticles to some extent, committed to its long-term catalytic stability. Besides, the mesoporous catalysts possessed enhanced ability to withstand coke, although not any modifiers had been added. Properties of the coke over the mesoporous catalyst were also carefully investigated. Therefore, the ordered mesoporous alumina was a promising catalyst support for the carbon dioxide reforming with methane. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Mesoporous Co‐Al Oxide Nanosheets As Highly Efficient Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Abstract:We report mesoporous Co-Al oxide nanosheets (CoxAl-Ns, where x denotes the Co/Al ratio in the samples) prepared by calcination of CoAl-hydrotalcite and subsequent alkaline treatment. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements show that the prepared Co-Al oxide nanosheets (CoxAl-Ns) are very thin (10-15 nm) and exhibit high mesoporosity (3-5 nm). Catalytic CO oxidation tests reveal that the CoxAl-Ns exhibit excellent catalytic performances at relatively low temperatures: for example, the Co2.5Al-Ns catalyst could achieve 99% CO conversion at -98 degrees C. Kinetic studies and experimental investigations indicate that the high activity of the Co2.5Al-Ns sample is strongly related to the abundance of active sites associated with the large Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area. The Co2.5Al-Ns catalyst also achieves full conversion of CO in tests performed with a gas mixture simulating automobile exhaust gas at 200 degrees C. After loading the Co2.5Al-Ns on a porous ceramic substrate, the obtained Co2.5Al-Ns/PC shows high activity and stability in CO oxidation process. These features are potentially important for future industrial applications of these catalysts.

Abstract:A multi-nanoparticle-embedded amorphous aluminum/magnesium oxides (AAMO) core/mesoporous silica (mSiO(2)) shell structure has been successfully synthesized by calcining the presynthesized catalyst precursor-containing layered double hydroxide (LDH) core/mesoporous silica shell composite. The well-dispersed catalytic nanoparticles were fixed at the interface between AAMO core and mesoporous SiO2 shell, i.e., at the inner pore mouths of the mesoporous SiO2 shell, which could effectively prevent nanoparticles from growth and/or aggregation with each other and in the meantime allow efficient access of reactants to the catalytic NPs. The final core/shell composite was found to be an efficient and highly recyclable heterogeneous catalyst.

Abstract:Nanostructured mixed metal oxides with porous hollow-interior structure hold great promise in environmental-related catalysis, owing to their excellent catalytic properties. However, facile fabrication of such mesoporous architecture is still challenging. Here, by using a transient aerosol-assisted self-assembly (AASA) method, we synthesized the Co3O4-Al2O3 mesoporous hollow spheres (MHS) composed of thermally stable Co3O4 nanoparticles partially anchored to amorphous interfacial Al2O3. The as-prepared Co3O4-Al2O3 nanocomposites displayed distinct features of large pore volume and stable assembled morphology, and thus showed significant advantages in mass transfer and redox behavior. For Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, a very important reaction in fuel production, the Co3O4-Al2O3 MHS exhibited significant catalytic performance in conversion, selectivity and stability for the desired gasoline products. Therefore, we provide a facile and controlled approach towards the preparation of mesoporous hollow materials to achieve novel mixed metal oxide nanocatalysts those are good candidates in energy-production application. Abstract:A nanostructural catalyst with long-term durability under harsh conditions is very important for an outstanding catalytic performance. Herein, a new ultrastable PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocatalyst was explored to improve the catalytic performance of carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation by virtue of the surface active lattice oxygen derived from strong metal-support interactions. Such a structure can overcome the issues of Co3O4-SiO2 inactivation by water vapor and the Pt inferior activity at low temperature. Further, Co3O4-SiO2 nanosheets endow superior structure stability under high temperatures of up to 800 °C, which gives long-term catalytic cyclability of PtCo/Co3O4-SiO2 nanocomposites for CO oxidation. Moreover, the large specific surface areas (294 m2 g-1) of the nanosheet structure can expose abundant surface active lattice oxygen, which significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of CO oxidation at 50 °C over 30 days without apparent aggregation of PtCo nanoparticles after 20 cycles from 50 to 400 °C. It can be expected to be a promising candidate as an ultrastable efficient catalyst.

Abstract:Crystalline mesoporous metal oxides have attracted considerable attention recently, but their catalytic applications have rarely been studied. In this work, a series of crystalline three-dimensional mesoporous metal oxides (i.e., CeO2, Co3O4, Cr2O3, CuO, Fe2O3, β-MnO2, Mn2O3, Mn3O4, NiO, and NiCoMnO4) were prepared using the mesoporous silica KIT-6 as a hard template. These ordered mesoporous metal oxides with highly crystalline walls were characterized by PXRD, TEM, N2 adsorption and evaluated as CO oxidation catalysts. These mesoporous materials, except for mesoporous Fe2O3, exhibit much higher catalytic activities than their bulk counterparts. In particular, mesoporous Co3O4, β-MnO2, and NiO show appreciable CO oxidation activity below 0 °C, and the catalytic activities of mesoporous β-MnO2, and NiO are even higher than those of their nanoparticulate counterparts with large surface areas. β-MnO2 is particularly interesting because it combines low cost and low toxicity with high activity (T 50 = 39 °C).

Abstract:A series of mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce-Zr solid solutions with different Ce/Zr ratios were successfully synthesized by the evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy, and were employed as catalytic supports of CuO-based catalysts for CO oxidation. These supports and catalysts were systematically characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) mapping, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), H-2 temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), CO2 temperature programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), etc. The catalytic performances toward CO oxidation had been carefully evaluated over these CuO-based catalysts. The effects of various influencing factors, such as the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, redox properties of the support, CuO loading amount and calcination temperature, on the low-temperature catalytic activity had been carefully investigated. The results showed that the catalyst supported on the support with a Ce/Zr ratio of 80/20 exhibited the highest catalytic activity. It was also found that the Ce-Zr solid solution mesoporous catalysts exhibited much higher catalytic activity than the counterparts without evident mesostructure, demonstrating the advantages of the mesoporous catalysts by providing more accessible catalytically active sites. Besides, the mesoporous Ce-Zr solid solution-supported catalysts with excellent redox properties displayed much better catalytic performances than the commercial gamma-Al2O3-supported catalyst. The kinetic study also indicated that the apparent activation energy of the CO oxidation process was greatly affected by the Ce/Zr ratio, mesostructure, and redox properties of the support. Overall, the present CuO-based catalysts with mesoporous nanocrystalline Ce-Zr solid solutions as supports were considered as a series of promising catalysts for CO oxidation.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous NiSiAl composite oxides with an amorphous phase were prepared by an improved evaporation-induced self-assembly strategy. The silica was distributed homogeneously in the mesoporous skeleton and improved the ordered mesoporous structure of NiAl. Catalytic tests toward the CO2 reforming of CH4 indicated that the NiSiAl exhibited higher catalytic activity and stability over 100 h at 700 degrees C than NiAl. The enhanced performance results from the high thermal stability induced by Si doping, which hinders the Al2O3 phase transformation from amorphous to gamma-Al2O3; therefore, the uniform dispersion of the Ni nanoparticles is retained owing to the confinement effect of the ordered mesopores. The stabilized Ni nanoparticles reinforced the resistance of the catalyst to carbon deposition and, thus, boosted its durability. Notably, even under more stringent conditions (750 degrees C, 200 h), NiSiAl-0.10 retained its amorphous Al2O3 structure and showed outstanding durability, almost without any deactivation.

Abstract:Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs. The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al3+ in Al2O3N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al2O3N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al2O3N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Alpenta3+ (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al2O3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.

Abstract:A facile strategy to prepare sintering- and leaching-resistant core-shell nanocatalysts is reported. ZIF-derived porous carbon supported Pd nanoparticles are coated with a mesoporous silica shell, preventing Pd nanoparticles from sintering at high temperature and leaching in a catalytic process. This nanocatalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and recyclability for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol.

Abstract:Herein, we report novel gold catalysts made by dispersing Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures on solid supports. In the synthesis of Au@Fe2O3 core-shell structures, dodecanethiol-capped gold nanoparticles were used as the seed and Fe(CO)(5) was used as the precursor to Fe2O3 shell. The Au@Fe2O3 core-shell particles were deposited onto SiO2 support to obtain Au@Fe2O3/SiO2 catalysts that were highly active for low-temperature CO oxidation. Low-Temperature Synthesis of Tunable Mesoporous Crystalline Transition Metal Oxides and Applications as Au Catalyst Supports

Abstract:Mesoporous transition metal oxides are of great potential as catalyst supports, shape-selective catalysts, photocatalysts, and sensor materials. Previously stable crystalline mesoporous oxides were mostly obtained by thermally induced crystallization or by segregating the nanocrystals with an amorphous phase. Here we report a novel direct approach to crystalline mesoporous frameworks via the spontaneous growth and assembly of transition metal oxide nanocrystals (i.e., rutile TiO2, fluorite CeO2, cassiterite SnO2, and anatase SnxTi1-xO2) by oxidative hydrolysis and condensation in the presence of anionic surfactants. The influences of synthesis time, surfactants with different chain lengths, concentrations of the oxidant (i.e., hydrogen peroxide), and synthesis temperatures on the composition and morphologies of the resulting materials were investigated by X-ray diffraction, N-2-sorption, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A mechanism for the templated synthesis of crystalline mesoporous metal oxides was tentatively proposed. To demonstrate the catalytic applications of these materials, gold nanoparticles were loaded on mesoporous rutile TiO2 and fluorite CeO2 supports, and their catalytic performance in CO oxidation and water-gas shift was surveyed. Au nanoparticles supported on the mesoporous crystalline metal oxides exhibit higher reactivity and excellent on-stream stability toward CO oxidation and water-gas shift reaction compared with Au nanoparticles supported on commercial TiO2 and CeO2.
