Abstract:The separation of micro and nanoscale colloids is a necessary step in most biological microassay techniques, and is a common practice in microchemical processing. Chemical waves are frequently encountered in biochemical systems driven far from equilibrium. Here, we put forward a strategy for separating small suspending colloids by means of their surfing on substrate chemical wavefronts. The colloids with catalytic activities sensitive to the substrates are activated to show self-propulsion and consequently exhibit a chemotactic response to the traveling wavefronts, which results in their spontaneous separation from the multicomponent complex mixture via self-diffusiophoresis. The dynamics of the process is analyzed through a particle-based simulation. In addition, it is found that separation can be carried out according to particle size. The mechanisms underpinning the chemical and physical separation processes are discussed, and the dependencies on the reaction rate constant and particle size are presented. The results may prove relevant for further experimental and theoretical studies of separation in complex active environments.
Separation of Nanorods by Density Gradient Centrifugation.

Abstract:The experimental conditions necessary for the synthesis of well-defined nanoparticles are often difficult to control. There is thus a compelling need for post-synthesis separation of nanoparticles polydispersed in size and shape. We demonstrate here both theoretically and experimentally that gold nanorods with diverse aspect ratios can be separated using density gradient centrifugation. By analysing the force balance of a Brownian rod falling in a Stokes flow, we derive a rigorous and predictive model that reveals the quantitative dependency of the nanorod sedimentation rates on their mass and shape. The calculations show that while mass dependency is still the dominating factor during centrifugation, the shape factor is not insignificant. Relatively heavier but long and thin rods could sediment slower than certain size of lighter spheres, and some rods and spheres with different masses and shapes may never be separated. This mass and shape dependency is exploited to separate as-prepared gold nanorod colloids by sucrose gradient centrifugation. Two layers of nanorods with narrow aspect-ratio distributions are obtained.

Abstract:Nanoseparation and concomitant purification of nanoparticles by ultracentrifugation in a nonhydroxylic organic density gradient has been demonstrated by separating several typical colloidal nanoparticles, including Au, Ag, and CdSe. Successful separation of Au nanowires from their spherical counterparts showed that colloidal particles can be separated not only by size but also morphology. In addition to extending the range of colloidal systems which can be separated and providing monodisperse samples that cannot be obtained by synthesis optimization alone, this method simplifies the postsynthesis treatment process and facilitates subsequent bulk assembly of the monodisperse colloids. Dissolution of organic polymers in the gradient medium both enhances the separation efficiency and also allows the direct fabrication of functional composite films with discrete monodisperse nanoparticles embedded inside.
Synthesis of Gold Colloid with Exclusion of Nonspherical Nanoparticles by Seeding Growth

Abstract:This paper reports a method for the preparation of monodispersed gold colloid by seeding growth, with elimination of the nonspherical by-products, which were often observed and difficult to separate in previous works. The formation of nonspherical particles was found to be closely associated with the experimental conditions, such as, molar ratios and addition sequence of the reagents. The larger the [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio, the less and smaller the nonspherical particles. In addition, the effect of addition sequence can be ascribed to that of [N-H2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio, since different addition sequences make different instantaneous [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratios during the addition and thus lead to different shape distribution of particles. Based on these findings, a method is adopted to rule out the nonspherical particles, by using high ratios of [NH2OH] to [HAuCl4] (the [NH2OH]: [HAuCl4] ratio being kept in the range of 10 similar to 30) and favorable addition sequence (NH2OH being added to seeds prior to HAuCl4). No nonspherical nanoparticles can be observed, and the resulted gold colloid shows good monodispersity and excellent size-controllability.
High-purity gold nanobipyramids can be obtained by an electrolyte-assisted and functionalization-free separation route

Abstract:Gold nanobipyramids (NBPs) have attracted intensive attentions because they exhibit more advantageous plasmonic properties than comparable gold nanorods. However, unlike that short gold nanorods can be synthesized routinely in a high yield (around 99% of the total particles), current syntheses of gold NBPs generally receive a low yield (around 30% of the total particles) and co-produce spherical impurities difficult to separate. Thus an effective purification route of gold NBPs is desirable for optimizing their performances. In this study, we demonstrated that the spherical nanoparticles with smaller inter-particle contact area can be separated from the NBPs that undergo gradual precipitation by electrolyte-induced electrostatic screening. During this procedure, no special surface-functionalization of the NBPs was needed. As a result of this simple separation strategy, NBPs at a level of purity to above 90% is achieved in a single purification round. In particularly, the precipitates of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)-capped NBPs can be easily converted into colloidal state due to the strong steric constraint of CTA+ bilayer, facilitating further investigations.

Abstract:Gold nanoprisms with average edge size of similar to 140 nm and thickness of similar to 8 nm were achieved in high-purity (similar to 97%) by exploiting the electrostatic aggregation and shape effects through a modified seed-mediated approach. The proposed strategy lies in the dramatically different stability and aggregation potential between the produced gold nanoprisms and spherical gold nanoparticles, which can be modulated by varying the anion concentration in the reaction solution. Hence, the gold nanoprisms spontaneously aggregated into precipitate whereas most of the spherical ones were still kept in the solution. Moreover, this strategy is also flexible enough that ultra-small gold nanoprisms with average width less than 50 nm can be collected in good-purity. The structure and optical properties of these nanoprisms have been studied by TEM, SAED, XRD and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, respectively. These high-purity colloidal gold nanoprisms exhibit remarkably enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as well as strong near-infrared absorption. Furthermore, we have also investigated their potential for biosensing based on the sensitive changes of SPR band induced by the antibody-antigen recognition events. The experimental results clearly suggest that gold nanoprisms can be a promising nanostructured system for plasmonic sensor applications. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A facile while flexible approach to size-controllable high-purity colloidal gold nanoplates has been presented. By adjusting the quantity of seeds and I-through a seed-mediated, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTABr)-assisted synthetic system, the edge length of the gold nanoplates can be adjusted from 140 to 30 nm without changing their thickness or crystal structure. By simply increasing the ion concentration of the reaction solution, the as-prepared gold nanoplates can be deposited due to the different electrostatic aggregation effects between nanoplates and spherical nanoparticles. Effective storage methods to keep the structural and optical stability of these gold nanoplates are also proposed.

Abstract:Tadpole-shaped gold nanoparticles are synthesized in high yield by a simple temperature-reducing seeding approach, without additional capping agent or surfactant. The initial concentration of gold ions, the added seed colloids, and the solution reaction temperature play critical roles. Examination of nanoparticles at different stages of the reaction with transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis spectrophotometry reveal the formation of the special structure as a kind of aggregation-based growth, including spherical aggregation at the boiling temperature and linear aggregation at the reduced temperature. The latter is further studied using a theoretical model. Moreover, thanks to the asymmetric structure of gold nanotadpoles, three types of chaining of gold nanotadpoles are experimentally obtained in nonuniform alternating-current electric fields at different frequencies by dielectrophoresis, which are in qualitative agreement with the simulation results.

Abstract:Current work presents a simple and efficient method for the preparation of gold superparticles. The self-assembly of gold nanoparticles into colloidal superparticles was realized in-situ during the preparation of nanoparticles when a type of thiol molecules were used as ligands. Further investigation reveals that t-butylamine hydrochloride, an ionic byproduct generated during the redox reaction of precursors, plays a key role in the formation of gold superparticles. The polarity of monolayers made from these ligands on the nanoparticle surface allows the interaction of nanoparticles and the ionic byproduct, which is indispensable for the superparticle formation.

Abstract:Seed-mediated synthesis strategies, in which small gold nanoparticle precursors are added to a growth solution to initiate heterogeneous nucleation, are among the most prevalent, simple, and productive methodologies for generating well-defined colloidal anisotropic nanostructures. However, the size, structure, and chemical properties of the seeds remain poorly understood, which partially explains the lack of mechanistic understanding of many particle growth reactions. Here, we identify the majority component in the seed solution as an atomically precise gold nanocluster, consisting of a 32-atom Au core with 8 halide ligands and 12 neutral ligands constituting a bound ion pair between a halide and the cationic surfactant: Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 (X = Cl, Br; AQA = alkyl quaternary ammonium). Ligand exchange is dynamic and versatile, occurring on the order of minutes and allowing for the formation of 48 distinct Au 32 clusters with AQAX (alkyl quaternary ammonium halide) ligands. Anisotropic nanoparticle syntheses seeded with solutions enriched in Au 32 X 8 [AQA + •X - ] 12 show narrower size distributions and fewer impurity particle shapes, indicating the importance of this cluster as a precursor to the growth of well-defined nanostructures.

Abstract:Citrate-capped gold nanoparticles with narrow diameter distribution were prepared by the reduction of chloroauric acid with borohydride. After the gold nanoparticles were transferred to toluene solution through ligand conformation change, close-packed two-dimensional nanocrystal lattices were obtained on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) copper grids by evaporating approximately 10 µL of concentrated particle dispersion. The formation of the thiolate gold nanoparticles was investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy and FTIR spectra. The 2D Fourier transform power spectra of the monolayer confirmed the supperlattices’ hexagonal symmetry. Furthermore, long-range-ordered bilayer superlattices, of which the nanoparticles in the top layer piled on the ones in the bottom layer, could also be observed by transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:A small section of nonspherical particles can be observed in the further growth of spherical gold colloids exposed to a mixture of NH2OH and HAuCl4. The concentration ratio of [NH2OH]:[HAuCl4] is critical for the formation of nonspherical particles as higher ratios produce lower yields and smaller of such particles. These concentrations also affect the reaction kinetics; the reaction rate increases with [NH2OH], while independent of [HAuCl4], which we believe is due to the specific adsorption of AuCl−4 onto gold surface. These nonspherical particles come from the preferential growth of {111} facets as indicated by their TEM images and electron diffraction patterns. We propose this preferential growth is ascribed to the preferential adsorption of AuCl−4 on {111} facets, and some competition which determines the yield of nonspherical particles exists between the AuCl−4 adsorption and the AuCl−4 reduction, faster reduction counteracting the effect of this preferential adsorption and thus suppressing nonspherical particle. This result probably provides some guidance to develop a shape-controlled synthesis of gold particles without any additives.

Abstract:We report a novel strategy on the controlled assembly of gold nanoparticles (NPs) at the air–water interface by designing a concentration gradient of electrolytes utilizing volatile weak acidic electrolytes. Films of close-packed Au NPs can be facilely obtained by exposing citrate-protected gold colloids to the vapor of formic acid for several hours in an airtight desiccator at room temperature. Both the higher interfacial concentration of formic acid and the buffer effect of citrate solution play the key roles in the assembly. They engender a gradient distribution of hydrogen ions such that to trigger the interfacial assembly of gold NPs while preventing the bulk colloid from aggregation and coagulation. Comparative investigations have also been performed either using other volatile electrolytes like weaker acetic acid and stronger hydrochloric acid or adding an electrolyte directly into the colloids. The as-prepared films of gold NPs can serve as good substrates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This strategy has also been applied to the assembly of some other NPs like colloidal Pt at the air–water interface.

Abstract:In order to overcome the serious deficiencies of the traditional aqueous centrifugation method in on-demand purification of metal nanoparticles, we have theoretically and experimentally developed a simple purification method based on the nanoparticles' surface area discrepancy, which can separate particles with the same mass but different shapes. As an example, we apply this method to obtain on demand homogeneous Au triangular nanoplates, and tune the plasmon modes of Au nanoplates into resonance with the emission of quantum dots to achieve fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between them. Moreover, due to their high homogeneity, the purified Au triangular nanoplates exhibit an excellent sensitivity to refractive index, as high as 963 nm RIU(-1) (approaching the theoretical value of 982 nm RIU(-1)), which leads to high gauging accuracy, up to 80 ppb and 1.0 U, for sensing bovine serum albumin and DNA polymerase in solution, respectively. Our work introduces a facile, effective strategy for the separation of nanoparticles, which could obtain building blocks with scalable uniform nanosize, providing a path to precise control of metal nanoparticle's plasmon modes and efficient fabrication of nanodevices.
Wet chemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles using silver seeds: a shape control from nanorods to hollow spherical nanoparticles

Abstract:A seed-mediated method was employed here for CTAB-assisted gold nanoparticle growth. 3–4 nm silver aqueous colloid was stabilized by sodium citrate and used as seed solution to initial gold particle growth. The concentration of seed solution was calculated based on its relationship with silver atom concentration and seed particle statistical mean volume. It was found that there is a maximum seed concentration of 8.57 × 10−12 M (~25 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M seed solution added) in 10 ml 2.5 × 10−4 M HAuCl4 growth solution for growth of rodlike particles. Below this seed amount, the aspect ratio of nanorods could be controlled by varying the silver seed amount, i.e. nanorods with aspect ratio ~18.9 were obtained when the seed concentration in the growth solution was 0.343 × 10−12 M by adding 1 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution and nanorods with aspect ratio ~9.69 were obtained when the seed concentration in the growth solution was 1.715 × 10−12 M by adding 5 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution. As the seed concentration in the growth solution was more than 8.58 × 10−12 M (25 µl 0.343 × 10−8 M silver seed solution was added), there were no rodlike particles formed but spherical ones instead. These spheres were further studied by TEM and found to all be hollow structures. It was suggested that there were probably two different nucleation processes for growth of nanorods and spheres. For hollow spheres, the reaction between Ag seeds and Au ions formed hollow structures based on the Ag particle template effect. Then further growth of Au on these hollow structures produced hollow gold nanospheres. For nanorods, due to the very low concentration of silver seed (molar ratio of Ag seed: Au = 3.426 × 10−8), the growth process here probably was started by silver-induced Au nucleation, in which reduction of gold ions by silver resulted in small gold clusters. These gold clusters further grew up into nanoparticles and nanorods in the presence of CTAB.

Abstract:Well-defined gold nanobelts as well as unique gold nanocombs made of nanobelts were readily synthesized by the reduction of HAuCl4 with ascorbic acid in aqueous mixed solutions of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDSn). Single-crystalline gold nanobelts grown along the <110> and <211> directions were prepared in mixed CTAB-SDSn solutions at 4 and 27 degrees C, respectively. Furthermore, single-crystalline gold nanocombs consisting of a <110>-oriented stem nanobelt and numerous <211>-oriented nanobelts grown perpendicularly on one side of the stem were fabricated by a two-step process with temperature changing from 4 to 27 degrees C. It was proposed that the mixed cationic-anionic surfactants exerted a subtle control on the growth of gold nanocrystals in solution due to the cooperative effect of mixed surfactants. This synthetic strategy may open a new route for the mild fabrication and hierarchical assembly of metal nanobelts in solution. The obtained gold nanobelts showed good electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of methanol in alkaline solution; in particular, the electrode modified with the nanobelts obtained at 27 degrees C exhibited an electrocatalytic activity considerably higher than normal polycrystalline gold electrode. Moreover, the gold nanobelts were used as the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate for detecting the enhanced Raman spectra of p-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules, and the gold nanobelts obtained at 4 degrees C exhibited an unusual larger enhancement of the b2 modes relative to the a1 modes for the adsorbed PATP molecules.

Abstract:Shape complementarity is of paramount importance in molecular recognition, but has rarely been adopted in the self-assembly of colloidal particles, especially in the case of nanoparticles of different shapes. Here, we demonstrated a simple, yet powerful strategy for fabricating gold nanoring-based heterogeneous nanostructures (AuNR-HNs) with well-defined geometries and high yield. The assembly of various geometries of AuNR-HNs is modulated by the shape complementarity of plasmonic nanorings and nanospheres. We also present experimental evidence of dark quadrupolar ring mode excitation in AuNR-HNs through single-particle optical measurements. Our strategy will be beneficial in the study of nanoparticle assembly, photonic element interaction, and the development of plasmon-based optical devices.

Abstract:It is found that Cu2+ is an effective agent for the controlled preparation of shaped gold nanoparticles. As the concentration of Cu2+ increases from 0 mM to 0.2 mM to 1.6 mM, the shape of the gold nanoparticles changes from rod to cuboid to decahedron. A possible mechanism based on selectively retarding the 'growth rate of the {111} plane is proposed.
