Abstract:The separation of micro and nanoscale colloids is a necessary step in most biological microassay techniques, and is a common practice in microchemical processing. Chemical waves are frequently encountered in biochemical systems driven far from equilibrium. Here, we put forward a strategy for separating small suspending colloids by means of their surfing on substrate chemical wavefronts. The colloids with catalytic activities sensitive to the substrates are activated to show self-propulsion and consequently exhibit a chemotactic response to the traveling wavefronts, which results in their spontaneous separation from the multicomponent complex mixture via self-diffusiophoresis. The dynamics of the process is analyzed through a particle-based simulation. In addition, it is found that separation can be carried out according to particle size. The mechanisms underpinning the chemical and physical separation processes are discussed, and the dependencies on the reaction rate constant and particle size are presented. The results may prove relevant for further experimental and theoretical studies of separation in complex active environments.
Gold Mesoparticles with Precisely Controlled Surface Topographies for Single-Particle Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract:Understanding of the influence of nanotextured surface topographies on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is still rather limited, even after intensive research in recent years; this is mainly due to the absence of a synthesis system to control the surface morphologies on metal meso-/nanoparticles. Here, a facile particle-mediated aggregation protocol was reported to synthesize a series of uniform gold mesoparticles with a nanotextured rough surface. The surface topographies can be precisely controlled by varying the temperatures and concentrations of dopa and Au ions. For example, the tips can be well changed from half-sphere to spike, and then to blade, and the size of the tips also can be tuned, such that the thickness of the blade-like tips can be artificially controlled from 9 to 14 nm. Single-particle SERS analysis reveals that the uniform Au mesoparticles with highly nanotextured topography have enhancement factors greater than 1.0 x 10(8) with narrow distribution. The effect of the precisely controlled mesoparticle topographies on SERS properties was deeply studied using Raman analysis and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The result indicated that a strong electric field will be induced at the tips and slits on the flower-like mesoparticle surface by the confined light in the cavities between the petals. As such, the current protocol opens up avenues for the fabrication of structurally reproducible mesosuperstructure-based SERS sensors.

Abstract:The geometry of the organic ligands on colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) is central for understanding the self-assembly behavior and many properties of NP-based soft matter. However, the current models of the NP-media interface give incomplete and often incorrect representations of its structure, especially for aqueous systems. Here, we show that NPs capped with 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) serve as a convenient model for elucidation of surface ligand geometry and its effect on collective noncovalent forces of highly concentrated NPs. Contrary to expectations, MPA was found to form surface layers with different thicknesses varying from monolayer to multilayers depending on the ratio of isopropanol to the as-made NP dispersions in the purification. Solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and theoretical simulations uncovered that the monolayer includes strongly coordinated ligands and adsorbed ligands interacting with the NP surface non-covalently. Increased density of the non-covalently attached ligands results in a multilayered ligand shell. Consequentially, we demonstrate that the viscoelasticity of concentrated NP dispersions carrying a monolayer of MPA is higher than those of multilayered NPs. These observations enable a better understanding of the complexity of water-soluble NP dispersions and collective non-covalent forces of supramolecular NPs.

Abstract:Nanoseparation and concomitant purification of nanoparticles by ultracentrifugation in a nonhydroxylic organic density gradient has been demonstrated by separating several typical colloidal nanoparticles, including Au, Ag, and CdSe. Successful separation of Au nanowires from their spherical counterparts showed that colloidal particles can be separated not only by size but also morphology. In addition to extending the range of colloidal systems which can be separated and providing monodisperse samples that cannot be obtained by synthesis optimization alone, this method simplifies the postsynthesis treatment process and facilitates subsequent bulk assembly of the monodisperse colloids. Dissolution of organic polymers in the gradient medium both enhances the separation efficiency and also allows the direct fabrication of functional composite films with discrete monodisperse nanoparticles embedded inside.
Achieving High-Purity Colloidal Gold Nanoprisms and Their Application As Biosensing Platforms

Abstract:Gold nanoprisms with average edge size of similar to 140 nm and thickness of similar to 8 nm were achieved in high-purity (similar to 97%) by exploiting the electrostatic aggregation and shape effects through a modified seed-mediated approach. The proposed strategy lies in the dramatically different stability and aggregation potential between the produced gold nanoprisms and spherical gold nanoparticles, which can be modulated by varying the anion concentration in the reaction solution. Hence, the gold nanoprisms spontaneously aggregated into precipitate whereas most of the spherical ones were still kept in the solution. Moreover, this strategy is also flexible enough that ultra-small gold nanoprisms with average width less than 50 nm can be collected in good-purity. The structure and optical properties of these nanoprisms have been studied by TEM, SAED, XRD and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy, respectively. These high-purity colloidal gold nanoprisms exhibit remarkably enhanced surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as well as strong near-infrared absorption. Furthermore, we have also investigated their potential for biosensing based on the sensitive changes of SPR band induced by the antibody-antigen recognition events. Abstract:Achieving versatile dispersion of nanoparticles in a broad range of solvents (e.g., water, oil, and biofluids) without repeatedly recourse to chemical modifications are desirable in optoelectronic devices, self-assembly, sensing, and biomedical fields. However, such a target is limited by the strategies used to decorate nanoparticle’s surface properties, leading to a narrow range of solvents for existing nanoparticles. Here we report a concept to break the nanoparticle’s dispersible limit via electrochemically anchoring surface ligands capable of sensing the surrounding liquid medium and rotating to adapt to it, immediately forming stable dispersions in a wide range of solvents (polar and nonpolar, biofluids, etc.). Moreover, the smart nanoparticles can be continuously electrodeposited in the electrolyte, overcoming the electrode surface-confined low throughput limitation of conventional electrodeposition methods. The anomalous dispersive property of the smart Ag nanoparticles enables them to resist bacteria secreted species-induced aggregation and the structural similarity of the surface ligands to that of the bacterial membrane assists them to enter the bacteria, leading to high antibacterial activity. The simple but massive fabrication process and the enhanced dispersion properties offer great application opportunities to the smart nanoparticles in diverse fields.

Abstract:AgI nanoparticle has been reported to exhibit size-dependent properties. In the paper, we reported the use of combinations of surfactants, such as AOT, SDS, PVP and TWEEN20, to control the AgI synthesis. AgI nanoparticles can be obtained with different sizes. Measured and confirmed by DLS and TEM, the nanoparticles can be massively and evenly prepared with the sizes less than 20nm. The post-processing of extraction for the nanoparticles is relatively simple and environmentally friendly. Further experimental results demonstrate that the stability of the nanoparticles is greatly dependent on the formula of the surfactant compositions. The method presented here is a potential high-throughput technique that could be applied to synthesize many other nanoparticles.

Abstract:Despite many seeded methods having been achieved to synthesize spherical nanoparticles, the one-pot synthesis of Au nanospheres with perfect morphology is still a challenge due to nanocrystals tending to adopt a polyhedral morphology to minimize their surface free energy. We present here a one-pot synthesis for precisely shaped and monodispersed single-crystalline Au nanospheres with an ultrasmooth surface and tunable sizes (30–100 nm). During the synthesis, Au nanospheres undergo a unique morphology change from octahedral to spherical shape via selectively surface self-polishing etching induced by the O2/Cl– pair and Ag ion dynamically tailored regrowth direction. The localized surface plasmon resonance property of the Au nanospheres with different sizes is found to match well with the theoretical prediction because of their perfect spherical shapes and uniform sizes. Moreover, this protocol can achieve a large-scale synthesis (more than 500 mL for one time) of Au nanospheres solution with extreme stability due to isotropic surface tension (stored in ethylene glycol for more than 24 months). Purification of Au/Au Core/Satellite Supraparticles by Asymmetric Flow Field Flow Fractionation for SERS Nanotag-based Applications

Abstract:Over the last decades, nanoparticles have been increasingly used in biomedical applications, such as immunolabelling, requiring high control over size and shape. Nanoparticle synthesis often lacks the required reaction control which necessitates additional purification steps. For this purpose, asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AFFF) is a powerful tool to purify particles and characterize them online. Here, we systematically studied the usability of AFFF for the purification of a colloid primarily containing self-assembled Au/Au core/satellite particles (C/S particles). In this case, purification of C/S particles from unbound monomeric AuNP satellites, which were added in excess during synthesis, is needed. We successfully demonstrated the effective separation of monomeric SERS-inactive AuNP satellites from the highly SERS-active C/S particles. While centrifugation is a commonly used and easy bench-top method, separation with AFFF offers an improved resolution and recovery. A linearly decreasing crossflow profile enabled us to achieve a separation with sufficient resolution and good recovery. Purified C/S colloids exhibit an increase in SERS activity of 25%, improving their usability for SERS-based applications by avoiding false-negative results.

Abstract:Sensitive and reliable interfacial self-assembled nanomembranes are widely used for the detection of chemical contaminants in food and environment. This study developed a high-performance Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) analytical platform by self-assembling Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) at the three-phase liquid–liquid interface. The assembled nanoparticles arrays were immersed in halogen ions solution and the nanoparticle gaps were further shrunk through electrostatic interactions, resulting in a large-scale array of closely packed nanoparticles. The average gap between adjacent nanoparticles was less than 3 nm, where dense SERS ‘hot spots’ were generated and used for highly sensitive detection. The homogeneity of the self-assembled nanoparticle arrays under different conditions was still guaranteed despite the reduced integration time and the number of times in the mapping face sweep of the Au arrays. The improved high-throughput fabrication of self-assembled nanoparticle arrays in this way holds great promise for the development of a sensitive and reliable SERS platform for chemical contaminant monitoring.

Abstract:The size uniformity and dispersity of inorganic nanoparticles are important when they are dispersed in organic phase and serve as the precursor for particle-deposited nanosensors. However, most of the nanoparticles are dispersed into coating solutions right after surface modification, where the natural tendency of nanoparticles to agglomerate reduces the monodispersity and size uniformity during the coating process. By initiation of microdroplet coalescence, a method for in situ dispersion of surface-modified Au nanoparticles is presented in this study. Under optimal conditions, about 88% of the modified Au nanoparticles with an average size of 19 nm could be in situ dispersed. On the basis of dip-coating of the monodispersed Au nanocolloids, a SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) film was fabricated by uniformly depositing particles onto the surface and tremendous enhancement of Raman scattering was achieved. The SERS film could be used to detect a representative contaminant, trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPE), with a detection limit of down to 10 ppb.
Atomic-Layer-Deposition Assisted Formation of Wafer-Scale Double-Layer Metal Nanoparticles with Tunable Nanogap for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:A simple high-throughput approach is presented in this work to fabricate the Au nanoparticles (NPs)/nanogap/Au NPs structure for surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This plasmonic nanostructure can be prepared feasibly by the combination of rapid thermal annealing (RTA), atomic layer deposition (ALD) and chemical etching process. The nanogap size between Au NPs can be easily and precisely tuned to nanometer scale by adjusting the thickness of sacrificial ALD Al 2 O 3 layer. Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation data indicate that most of enhanced field locates at Au NPs nanogap area. Moreover, Au NPs/nanogap/Au NPs structure with smaller gap exhibits the larger electromagnetic field. Experimental results agree well with FDTD simulation data, the plasmonic structure with smaller nanogap size has a stronger Raman intensity. There is highly strong plasmonic coupling in the Au nanogap, so that a great SERS effect is obtained when detecting methylene blue (MB) molecules with an enhancement factor (EF) over 10 7 . Furthermore, this plasmonic nanostructure can be designed on large area with high density and high intensity hot spots. This strategy of producing nanoscale metal gap on large area has significant implications for ultrasensitive Raman detection and practical SERS application.
Highly Pure Gold Nanotriangles with almost 100% Yield for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract:Gold nanotriangle (Au NT), a unique anisotropic-shaped plasmonic nanostructure with distinctive optical, electrical, and catalytic characteristics, has been utilized in a variety of high-technological applications. However, the basic and practical applications of Au NTs are often hindered by size and yield (less than 60%) and engineering a facile and manageable approach to acquire Au NTs with high yields is still challenging. Herein, a simple and rapid seed-mediated method to prepare high-purity Au NTs (up to 97.4%) is proposed by precisely controlling the reaction kinetics. Importantly, there are two key factors to achieve high-yield Au NTs (70%) during the two-growth synthesis: (1) the high concentration of hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) that can provide a greater binding force on the ⟨111⟩ facet of Au seed and (2) the selective adsorption of potassium iodide (KI) on the ⟨111⟩ facet. Additionally, Au NTs with a wide range of sizes from 58 to 137 nm with a high uniformity can be tailored by a small window parameter regulation. Additionally, it is found that the addition of optimized salts can induce the rapid precipitation of Au NTs to form self-assembled microfibers and the efficient purification of Au NTs with a yield of about 97.4%. Furthermore, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation shows that anisotropic electromagnetic field enhancements and hot spot excitation modes can be generated in different assembling models of Au NTs. Finally, we construct macroscopic two-dimensional (2D) ordered monolayer films of Au NTs through volatilizing self-assembly. As a proof of concept, the ordered Au NT arrays exhibit both high surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensitivity and detecting stability compared to random assembling structures and Au NPs. Therefore, we believe that our proposed rapid synthesis and high-yield purification approach of Au NTs would pave a way to prepare designed nanomaterials for a variety of basic and high-technological practical applications.

Abstract:Noble-metal nanocrystals with well-controlled shapes or morphologies are of great interest for a variety of applications. To utilize these nanomaterials in consumer products, one has to produce the colloidal nanocrystals in large quantities while maintaining good control over their physical parameters and. properties. Droplet reactors have shown great potential for the continuous and scalable production of colloidal nanocrystals with controlled shapes. However, the efficiencies of most previously reported systems are still limited because of the complex post-treatment procedures. For example, the mixture of silicone oil and an aqueous suspension of solid products has to be separated by leveraging their miscibility and difference in density, while the solid products often need to be purified and concentrated by centrifugation. Herein, we report the design and construction of a droplet-reactor system that include new features such as a homemade unit for the automatic separation of silicone oil from the aqueous phase as well as a cross-flow filtration unit for the effective purification and concentration of the nanocrystals. Using various types of Pd nanocrystals as examples, we have demonstrated the feasibility of using this system to automatically produce and collect samples with uniform sizes and well-controlled shapes.

Abstract:Copper nanowires (Cu NWs) have been regarded as one of the most potential materials in the field of optoelectronics. However, the performance of Cu NWs based devices are directly affected by the purity of the Cu NWs, which mainly depends on the containing copper nanoparticle (Cu NPs). Here, we developed a novel shape-selective approach by a reversible ligand exchange process that simultaneously satisfies the high efficiency, high selectivity, and less deterioration of the target Cu NWs. Due to the difference in ligand exchange rates between Cu NWs and Cu NPs, the Cu NWs kept be hydrophobic and spontaneously floated up to the interface between the aqueous solution of organic additive and air, while the Cu NPs turned to be hydrophilic and dispersed evenly in the solution. Using sodium 3-mercaptopropanesulphonate as the ligand exchange reagent, the Cu NWs and Cu NPs can be separated efficiently under the optimal operation conditions. The organic additive can be screened according to the surface tension of the solution and easily available. Besides, this strategy is applicable to effectively separate Cu NWs from Cu@Ag NPs and Ni@Cu NPs. This method based on the ligand exchange is expected to promote the shape-selective separation of nanomaterials.

Abstract:Over the past decades, nanoparticles have increased in implementation to a variety of applications ranging from high-efficiency electronics to targeted drug delivery. Recently, microfluidic techniques have become an important tool to isolate and enrich populations of nanoparticles with uniform properties (e.g., size, shape, charge) due to their precision, versatility, and scalability. However, due to the large number of microfluidic techniques available, it can be challenging to identify the most suitable approach for isolating or enriching a nanoparticle of interest. In this review article, we survey microfluidic methods for nanoparticle isolation and enrichment based on their underlying mechanisms, including acoustofluidics, dielectrophoresis, filtration, deterministic lateral displacement, inertial microfluidics, optofluidics, electrophoresis, and affinity-based methods. We discuss the principles, applications, advantages, and limitations of each method. We also provide comparisons with bulk methods, perspectives for future developments and commercialization, and next-generation applications in chemistry, biology, and medicine.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A facile approach was developed to prepare novel multifunctional Fe2O3/Au/Ag nanostructures integrated with isolated functions involving magnetic and optical properties. The Fe2O3/Au/Ag hybrid nanoparticles with different thicknesses of Ag shell were prepared by adjusting the amount of the AgNO3. Surface structures were varied from the rough with pinhole to smooth and pinhole free surfaces with increasing amounts of AgNO3. The surface plasmon resonance was tuned in a very wide region from that of Au to Ag. Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects were also investigated, employing thiophenol (TP) and aminothiophenol (PATP) as probe molecules. It was revealed that the SERS intensity was strongly depended on the molar ratio of Ag and Au. With an increase in the Ag molar fractions, SERS signals were enhanced to the maximum due to the surface plasmon resonance of the pinhole structure. The magnetic enrichment for on line SERS monitoring the molecules with low concentration was performed based on the magnetic core and the SERS activity of the bimetallic shells. This enrichment procedure improved efficiently the limits of the SERS detection. It was shown that the multicomponent nanoparticles have potential applications in the fields of optical devices and magnetic separation.
Surfactant-Free Method to Prevent Gold Nanoparticle Aggregation and Its Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Applications

Abstract:The introduction of surfactants to stabilize colloidal citrate-reduced gold nanoparticles (prevent aggregation) is usually used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. However, the surfactants have many drawbacks for SERS applications, such as increasing the SERS background and blocking surface active sites. Here, we develop a surfactant-free method to stabilize colloidal cit-AuNPs based on alkali regulation, and this method can prevent gold nanoparticle aggregation under different harsh treatments, including ligand modification, centrifugation-based washing/enrichment, and salt addition. The SERS spectra, density functional theory simulation, and ζ potentials of cit-AuNPs indicate that the stability of enhanced cit-AuNPs under alkaline conditions is attributed to both the increased negative charge density (by ∼6 times from pH 7 to 12) and the molecular configuration on the metal surface. Compared with surfactant-based methods, this method can well maintain the inherent optical and interface properties of nanoparticles, avoid the SERS background, and avoid blocking of the surface active site due to the presence of surfactants. This method will enable AuNPs to have a wide range of applications in areas such as highly sensitive SERS sensors.

Abstract:Temperature-induced mechanical and other changes in biosolids are regulated by three types of kinetics, depending on whether the material is in the glassy state, undergoing a transition, or fully plasticized. The transition itself can take place over a considerable temperature range, which in many food and biological systems happens to be the most pertinent to their functionality and stability. At the transition onset, the plot of stiffness vs. temperature has a downward concavity. It is reversed only at an advanced stage of plasticization after much of the stiffness has already been lost. Consequently, the WLF, Arrhenius, or any other model that implies a continuous upward concavity cannot account for changes in the transition region, and it is unsafe to use them to predict properties through extrapolation. The mechanical changes in the transition region can be described by a model with the mathematical structure of Fermi's function. Its applicability has been demonstrated with published data on a variety of foods and biosolids. Because the plot of stiffness vs. moisture, or water activity, has the same general shape as that of the stiffness vs. temperature plot, it too can be described by a model with the same mathematical format. Because moisture lowers the transition center temperature in a manner that can be described by a simple algebraic expression, the combined effects of temperature and moisture can be incorporated into a single general model. The latter can be used to create three-dimensional displays of the stiffness-temperature-moisture characteristic relationships of biosolids at and around their transition. At temperatures well above that of the transition, though, where a plot of log stiffness vs. temperature has a clear upper concavity, this model is no longer applicable, and the changes are better described by the WLF or an alternative model.
Dissolved metal ion removal by online hollow fiber ultrafiltration for enhanced size characterization of metal-containing nanoparticles with single-particle ICP-MS

Abstract:Single particle-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is a powerful tool for size-characterization of metal-containing nanoparticles (MCNs) at environmentally relevant concentrations, however, coexisting dissolved metal ions greatly interfere with the accuracy of particle size analysis. The purpose of this study is to develop an online technique that couples hollow fiber ultrafiltration (HFUF) with SP-ICP-MS to improve the accuracy and size detection limit of MCNs by removing metal ions from suspensions of MCNs. Through systematic optimization of conditions including the type and concentration of surfactant and complexing agent, carrier pH, and ion cleaning time, HFUF completely removes metal ions but retains the MCNs in suspension. The optimal conditions include using a mixture of 0.05 vol.% FL-70 and 0.5 mmol/L Na2S2O3 (pH = 8.0) as the carrier and 4 min as the ion cleaning time. At these conditions, HFUF-SP-ICP-MS accurately determines the sizes of MCNs, and the results agree with the size distribution determined by transmission electron microscopy, even when metal ions also are present in the sample. In addition, reducing the ionic background through HFUF also lowers the particle size detection limit with SP-ICP-MS (e.g., from 28.3 to 14.2 nm for gold nanoparticles). This size-based ion-removal principle provided by HFUF is suitable for both cations (e.g., Ag+) and anions (e.g., AuCl4−) and thus has good versatility compared to ion exchange purification and promising prospects for the removal of salts and macromolecules before single particle analysis.
