Abstract:The obtained undercooling and its stability of Fe 81Ga 19 and Fe 725Ga 27.5 alloy melts are investigated by superheated under different denucleating glasses: 90% NaSiCa + 10% B 2O 3 (simplified as Na-Si-Ca-B) and 84.6%Na 2B 4 O 7+9.4%SiO 2+6%CaO (simplified as Na-B-Si). For Na-Si-Ca-B glass, the denucleating mechanism is a comprehensively physicochemical process, by which stable undercoolings up to 250 K can be obtained during the superheating-cooling cycles. However, Fe 725Ga 27.5 alloy has a great gallium loss when using Na-Si-Ca-B as the glass slag. The reason is that Na-Si-Ca-B glass has a large viscosity at a high temperature (>1273 K). For Na-B-Si glass, with the denucleating mechanism similar to Na-Si-Ca-B glass, large degree of undercooling up to 325 K can be obtained for Fe 725Ga 27.5 alloy during the superheating-cooling cycles, and gallium loss can be effectively avoided, as Na-B-Si glass has a modest viscosity at a high temperature.
