Abstract:An Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser with a saturable absorber based on single mode - graded index multimode - single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) with inner microcavity is demonstrated. The modulation depth of the saturable absorber was measured to be 1.9% when the SMF-GIMF-SMF structure is bent to a certain state. Such a simple saturable absorber enables the mode-locking operation in a ring Er-doped fiber laser and ultrafast pulses with pulse energy of 0.026 nJ and pulse width of 528 fs at the fundamental repetition rate of 14.34 MHz can be generated. In addition, the harmonic mode-locking operation can also be achieved. (c) 2018 Optical Society of America
Contrastive Study on Two Kinds of Semiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirrors for Side-Pumped Passively Mode-Locked Nd:YAG Lasers

Abstract:Based on the reflectance of saturable absorber depended on the optical intensity and the interference theory, we investigate the reflectance bandwidth characteristic of the semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM). Two kinds of SESAMs, one of which satisfies the antiresonance condition, and the other does not, are contrastively studied in mode-locked Nd:YAG lasers. Results show that stabilized continuous-wave mode-locking can also be obtained in picosecond regime by the SESAM, which dose not fulfill the antiresonance condition, as good as the results obtained using a mature commercial SESAM satisfying the antiresonance condition. Because the bandwidth of picosecond regime mode-locked pulse is not broad; therefore a broad bandwidth and a minimal group velocity are not necessary. Without considering the limit of the antiresonance condition, the difficulty of designing and growing SESAMs will be decreased significantly and there will be more freedom in the macroscopic parameters.

Abstract:The generation of passively Q-switched mode-locking operation with 100% modulation depth has been observed from a diode-pumped Nd:GdVO4 laser with a low temperature In0.25Ga0.75As saturable absorber, which was grown by the metal–organic chemical–vapor deposition technique and acted as saturable absorber as well as output coupler. The repetition rate and pulse duration of the mode-locked pulses concentrated in the Q-switch envelop were 455MHz and 12ps, respectively. The average output power was 1.8W and the slope efficiency was 36%.

Abstract:Abundant research findings have proved the value of two-dimensional (2D) materials in the study of nonlinear optics in fiber lasers. However, there remains two problems: how to reduce the start-up threshold, and how to improve the damage threshold, of fiber lasers based on 2D materials. A 15.1 mW low-threshold mode-locked fiber laser, based on a Cr2Si2Te6 saturable absorber (SA) prepared by the liquid-phase exfoliation method, is demonstrated successfully in this work. This provides a useful and economical method to produce SAs with low insertion loss and low saturation intensity. Besides, multiple high-order harmonics, from the fundamental frequency (12.6 MHz) to the 49th-order harmonic (617.6 MHz), mode-locked operations are recorded. The experimental results indicate the excellent potential of Cr2Si2Te6 as an optical modulator in exploring the soliton dynamics, harmonic mode locking, and other nonlinear effects in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a 980-nm Q-switch Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser by a multilayer molybdenum sulfide polymer composite as the broadband saturable absorber which is prepared by the chemical vapor deposition method. We achieve passively Q-switching operations at 978 nm with the pulse width of 2.7 and 0.63 μs, corresponding to the repetition rate of 212 and 221 kHz, respectively. The maximum output power is 127 mW. It is the first time that MoS 2 Q-switched Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser at 980 nm is demonstrated. The experimental results show that few-layer MoS 2 is a promising broadband saturable absorber material.

Abstract:Saturable absorbers are a key component for mode-locking femtosecond lasers. Polymer films containing graphene flakes have recently been used in transmission as laser mode-lockers but suffer from high nonsaturable loss, limiting their application in low-gain lasers. Here, we present a saturable absorber mirror based on a film of pure graphene flakes. The device is used to mode lock an erbium-doped fiber laser, generating pulses with state-of-the-art, sub-200-fs duration. The laser characteristic indicates that the film exhibits low nonsaturable loss (13% per pass) and large absorption modulation depth (45% of low-power absorption).

Abstract:We demonstrate femtosecond performance of an ultra-broadband high-index-contrast saturable Bragg reflector consisting of a silicon/silicon-dioxide/germanium structure that is fully compatible with CMOS processing. This device offers a reflectivity bandwidth of over 700 nm and sub-picosecond recovery time of the saturable loss. It is used to achieve mode-locking of an Er-Yb:glass laser centered at 1540 nm, generating 220 fs pulses, with the broadest output spectrum to date.

Abstract:Two-dimensional mono-elemental material is an excellent saturable absorber candidate with low saturation intensity, large modulation depth, high nonlinearities, and fast recovery time of excited carriers. Typically, these mono-elemental material with two-dimensional structure possesses tunable bandgap from metallic to semiconducting according to different number of layers. The successful application of these materials as the saturable absorber has exploited the development of mode-locked fiber lasers. Therefore, this review is intended to provide an up-to-date information to the development of mono-elemental saturable absorber for the advances in mode-locked fiber laser, with emphasis on their material properties, synthesis process and material characterization. Meanwhile, issues and challenges of the review research topic will be highlighted and addressed with several concrete recommendations.

Abstract:The fundamental principle and preparing method of semiconductor saturable absorption mirrors (SESAMs) for passive mode-locking of solid state lasers, semiconductor lasers and fiber lasers are introduced. By using these mode-locking devices on solid state lasers and optically-pumped vertical external cavity surface semission semiconductor lasers, ultra-short pulses with repetition rate varying from several to hundreds of GHz have been obtained and the related methods are reviewed.

Abstract:We report a low-loss broadband semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror (SESAM) that uses gold film as the reflector. A semiconductor- SiO(2) double-layer stack enhances the reflectivity of the gold film. This low-loss SESAM was used in a mode-locked Cr:forsterite laser to produce self-starting 20-fs-scale laser pulses at 1.3 microm . The structure can be applied to SESAM's for other wavelengths.

Abstract:In recent years, 2D Cr 2 S 3 has earned lots of attentions in the fields of photocatalysis and photodetector due to its outstanding environmental stability and high responsivity. However, up to now, the optical properties of 2D Cr 2 S 3 , especially the NLO properties of Cr 2 S 3 have been rarely studied. In this work, the NLO properties of Cr 2 S 3 -nanoparticles in 1 μm have been investigated by using open-aperture (OA) Z-scan method. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (β), modulation depth and saturable intensity are measured to be -2.6 cm/GW, 11.5%, and 0.115 MW/cm 2 , respectively. Furthermore, by depositing Cr 2 S 3 nanoparticles on a side-polished fiber and inserting into a ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) cavity, stable mode-locking laser and Q-switching laser with a pulse width of 10.2 ns and 2.95 μs are achieved, respectively. These results demonstrate that Cr 2 S 3 is a promising saturable absorber (SA) for the fiber laser applications.

Abstract:High repetition frequency (HRF) ultrashort pulse fiber laser has been widely used in laser cold processing. The technical solutions such as short cavity length fiber laser have been proposed to achieve HRF ultrashort pulse output recently. However, the application of material-based saturable absorbers in this field has been astricted due to the low modulation depth, low damage resistance threshold, and high saturation fluence. Here, we designed a one-dimensional asymmetric photonic crystal with defect layer (1D-APCDL) as a novel saturable absorber, where the defect layer is Bi 1.6 Sb 0.4 Te 3 with high modulation depth. The harmonic pulse with 3.82 GHz repetition frequency is achieved at the wavelength of 1562 nm, which is the highest repetition frequency of the topological insulator-based ring fiber laser so far to the best of our knowledge. The research provides a new saturable absorber solution, and provides a new idea for the application of material-based nonlinear optical chip in high-repetition frequency ultrashort pulse fiber lasers.

Abstract:Semiconductor saturable absorber mirrors (SESAMs) with GaAs/air interface relaxation region have less non-saturable loss than those with low temperature grown In0.25Ga0.75As relaxation region. A thin layer of SiO2 and a high reflectivity film of Si/(SiO2/Si)4 were coated on the SESAMs, respectively in order to improve the SESAM's threshold for damage. The passively continuous wave mode-locked lasers with two such SESAMs were demonstrated, and the SESAM with high reflectivity film of Si/(SiO2/Si)4 is proved to be helpful for high output power.

Abstract:MXene comprises one of the largest families in two dimensional nanomaterials with various chemical compositions, atomic structures, and terminated group species. There are over 200 types of MXenes that can be incorporated as optical switches owing to its excellent nonlinear saturable absorption characteristic. This review provides a deep insight into MXene based saturable absorber for mode‐locked fiber laser at all wavelengths. Being a new class of two dimensional (2D) metal carbides, borides, and nitrides, MXenes comprise one of the largest families of 2D nanomaterials that provide huge possibilities in photonics, electronics, and energy, Particularly, MXenes are discovered recently as alternatives to conventional saturable absorbers (SAs), such as carbon nanotube and graphene, which are used for short laser pulse generation. The high saturable absorption, astounding modulation depth, flexible bandgap tunability, and high electron density near Fermi level are the main features that make MXenes excellent candidate materials for SAs. Herein, this review summarizes the recent development on synthesis and characterization of the MXene, with focus on the nonlinear saturable absorption and the application of the MXene SA in mode‐locked fiber lasers. The emerging issues and challenges associated with MXene based SAs, as well as future perspectives of the reviewed topic are also discussed.
