Abstract:An ultracompact reflective arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) (de)multiplexer based on Si nanowires is demonstrated for the first time (to our knowledge). Each waveguide in the array has an individual photonic crystal (PhC) reflector at its end, making the AWG layout design very flexible. An eight-channel AWG (de)multiplexer with a channel spacing of 400 GHz is demonstrated experimentally. The total size of the fabricated AWG is as small as 134mumx115mum. The excess loss of the fabricated reflective AWG (de)multiplexer is about 3-4 dB, and the crosstalk is about -12dB.

Abstract:A novel design for an ultrasmall arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer based on a Si nanowire waveguide is presented. The two free propagation regions (FPRs) are overlapped so that the structure becomes more compact than the layout of a conventional design. Each half of an arrayed waveguide includes three straight sections and two bending sections, and all these sections are connected smoothly in sequence. Abstract:The large refractive index difference between Si and SiO2 makes it possible to realize ultrasmall photonic integrated circuits. A 5 × 5 ultracompact arrayed waveguide grating multiplexer based on 500×250 nm Si nanowire waveguides is designed and fabricated by using the technologies of E-beam writing and amorphous-Si deposition. The measured channel spacing is about 1.5 nm (close to the design value) and the channel crosstalk is about −8 dB.

Abstract:A compact Si-nanowire-based reflective arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) for dense wavelength-division multiplexing is proposed. At the end of each waveguide in the array, there is an individual photonic crystal (PhC) reflector, which makes the AWG layout design very flexible. All the PhC reflectors are with the same design. With such a design, the total size of the AWG (de)multiplexer is reduced by more than a half. The reflection efficiency of the used PhC reflectors is enhanced by optimizing the taper between the arrayed waveguides and the PhC reflector. A 200 GHz AWG (de)multiplexer is designed and fabricated as an example. The total size is only about 193 μm × 168 μm.

Abstract:A 16-channel 200 GHz arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) (de)-multiplexer is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing Si3N4 buried optical waveguides, which have 50 nm-thick Si3N4 cores and a 15 μm-thick SiO2 cladding. The structure with an ultra-thin core layer helps to reduce the scattering due to the sidewall roughness and consequently shows very low loss of about 0.4~0.8 dB/m. When using this type of optical waveguide for an AWG (de)multiplexer, there is no problem associated with gap refill using the upper-cladding material even when choosing a small (e.g., 1.0 μm) gap between adjacent arrayed waveguides, which helps to reduce the transition loss between the FPR (free-propagation region) and the arrayed waveguides. Therefore, the demonstrated AWG (de)multiplexer based on the present Si3N4 buried optical waveguides has a low on-chip loss. The fabricated AWG (de)multiplexer is characterized in two wavelength ranges around 1310 nm and 1550 nm, respectively. It shows that the crosstalk from adjacent and non-adjacent channels are about -30 dB, and -40 dB, respectively, at the wavelength range of 1310 nm. The Si3N4 AWG (de)multiplexer has a temperature dependence of about 0.011 nm/°C, which is close to that of a pure SiO2 AWG device.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an ultra-compact birefringence-compensated arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) triplexer based on silicon nanowire waveguide. The cross-order design is employed and the device has a small footprint of 0.18×0.12 mm2. The normalized losses for TM polarization for three channels are less than 4 dB with the crosstalk better than 18 dB. The polarization dependent wavelength shift (PDλ) is less than 2.5 nm for three channels operating at the wavelength range of 1490-1550 nm by using angled star couplers in combination with different diffraction orders for the two polarizations.

Abstract:A novel layout is presented to minimize the size of an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer based on Si nanowire waveguides, in particular when a high diffraction order is required. A series of microbends are inserted in the middle of arrayed waveguides to increase the lightpath difference while keeping small separation between arrayed waveguides. A designed ultrasmall AWG with a narrow channel spacing of 0.8nm has a total size of only about 0.505mm x 0.333mm (0.165mm(2)). (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:Optical demultiplexers employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) are demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator material. Description of the design and fabrication procedures is provided. The sizes of the devices are effectively reduced while the performance are comparable with that of the conventional AWG that was fabricated on the same wafer. The adjacent and nonadjacent crosstalks are better than -19 dB and -23 dB, respectively, and the typical on-chip channel loss less than 8.8 dB

Abstract:A high‐performance silicon arrayed‐waveguide grating (AWG) with 1.6‐nm channel spacing is proposed and realized for dense wavelength‐division (de)multiplexing systems. For the present AWG, the arrayed waveguides are broadened uniformly to be far beyond the singlemode regime, so that random phase errors and propagation loss are minimized even without any additional requirement for the fabrication process. Particularly, Euler‐bends are introduced for the arrayed waveguides to shrink the device footprint and suppress undesired high‐order modes excitation. A silicon arrayed‐waveguide grating (AWG) with 1.6‐nm channel spacing is proposed and realized with high performances for dense wavelength‐division (de)multiplexing systems. For the present AWG, the arrayed waveguides are broadened uniformly to be far beyond the singlemode regime, so that random phase errors and propagation loss are minimized even without any additional requirement for the fabrication process. Particularly, Euler‐bends are introduced for the arrayed waveguides to shrink the device footprint and suppress any excitation of higher‐order modes. As an example, a 16 × 16 AWG (de)multiplexer is realized with a compact footprint of 600 × 800 μm2 by using single‐etched 220‐nm‐thick silicon photonic waveguides. When using the fabricated AWG to demultiplex the channels launched from the central input port, the excess loss and the adjacent‐channel crosstalk of the central output port are ≈2.2 and ≈−31.7 dB, respectively. Such an AWG is one of the best among silicon implementations.
Silicon-Based Arrayed Waveguide Gratings for WDM and Spectroscopic Analysis Applications

Abstract:We compare the performance of silicon-based arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) with star couplers of Rowland and Confocal configurations, respectively, for both TE and TM polarizations. The star coupler with Rowland configuration and constant projection period for phased array waveguides on the tangent line at the grating pole shows sufficiently small aberration for all output channels of AWGs, achieving a better spectral performance compared to the Confocal configuration. The spectral performance of AWGs is also highly dependent on phase errors resulting from fabrication imperfections which are unavoidable in current fabrication technology, hence it is of significant importance to make the phase region of AWGs as small as possible. Using the optimized star coupler configuration, ultracompact large channel spacing AWGs employing a single bend with a different radius for each waveguide in the phase array and a S-shaped waveguide array, respectively, are fabricated and compared, together with high resolution (de)multiplexers utilizing the cascade of (N + 1) x (N + 1) AWGs and polarization combiner-rotator/rotator-splitter. High resolution ultracompact spectrometers using bidirectional (N + 1) x (N + 1) AWGs operating at TE and TM polarizations are also designed and fabricated. All the experimental results indicate that a smaller footprint for the phase region of AWGs contributes to an improved performance in their spectral responses. We also discuss the ways to reduce the size of phase region and suggest that decreasing the pitch of adjacent output waveguides on the imaging plane is an effective way. This paper provides design considerations for silicon-based AWGs towards various applications such as wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:We demonstrate an arrayed waveguide grating based on silicon nanowires with birefringence compensation for optical interconnects using coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM). Angled star couplers are employed in combination with different diffraction orders for TM and TE polarizations. This device has a compact footprint of 0.36 mm x 0.17 mm. Theoretical and experimental results show that the polarization-dependent wavelength shifts (PD lambda) can be reduced from 380-420 to 0.5-3.5 nm, below 25% of the 3 dB bandwidth of channel response. The measured cross talk for TM polarization is better than -18 dB, and that for TE is better than -14 dB. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
A Novel Design Of Compact-Structure Arrayed-Waveguide Grating Device

Abstract:A novel type of compact-structure arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) device is designed based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material. The size of the eight-channel AWG device is about 1.2x 1.2cm(2). In order to compensate TE-TM polarization, a total internal reflection (TIR) mirror is fabricated at the middle of each arrayed waveguide. When reflecting on this mirror, TE and TM modes have different phase changes. Through calculating the incidence angle, lightwaves of TE and TM modes which are at the same order can converge into the same output waveguide, thus the TE-TM shift is diminished. Due to this TIR mirror design, the total length of curved waveguides is reduced, while more straight waveguides are used. So the curved waveguide loss is reduced and the device size is diminished. The experimental results are given and feasibility of fabrication is tested.
