Abstract:TiO2 nanotubes were prepared through the reaction of TiO2 power in high-concentration NaOH under hydrothermal conditions. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV-Vis) were adopted to analyze as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes. The influence of rutile content in TiO2 powder on the structure and properties of TiO2 nanotube was investigated. The results show that pure rutile TiO2 powder is not conducive to the formation of TiO2 nanotubes, and the mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with uniform morphology can be prepared by TiO2 powder with anatase-rutile mixed crystal structure. With the increase of rutile content in the TiO2 powder, the rutile phase increases in as-prepared samples, and the photocatalytic activities first increase, and then decrease. The mixed crystal TiO2 nanotubes with anatase as dominant phase exhibit high photocatalytic decomposition activity to the methyl orange.
Enhanced photocatalytic CO₂-reduction activity of electrospun mesoporous TiO₂ nanofibers by solvothermal treatment.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into renewable hydrocarbon fuels using semiconductor photocatalysts is considered as a potential solution to the energy deficiency and greenhouse effect. In this work, mesoporous TiO2 nanofibers with high specific surface areas and abundant surface hydroxyl groups are prepared using an electrospinning strategy combined with a subsequent calcination process, followed by a solvothermal treatment. The solvothermally treated mesoporous TiO2 nanofibers exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance on CO2 reduction into hydrocarbon fuels. The significantly improved photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity and the improved charge separation after solvothermal treatment. The highest activity is achieved for the sample with a 2-h solvothermal treatment, showing 6- and 25-fold higher CH4 production rate than those of TiO2 nanofibers without solvothermal treatment and P25, respectively. This work may also provide a prototype for studying the effect of solvothermal treatment on the structure and photocatalytic activity of semiconductor photocatalysts.

Abstract:Nanocomposite photocatalysts of titania pillared montmorillonite were prepared by solvothermal reaction using water and ethanol as solvent, hexamethylene tetramine as precipitant and titanium trichloride as precursor. Phase composition, particle morphology, specific surface area, element content etc. of these samples were characterized by using X-ray diffraction(XRD). transmission electron microscopy(TEM), nitrogen gas adsorption BET method (BET) and atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The composite photocatalysts had a mesoporous structure with the distribution of pore diameters centered at 6 to 10 nm, which obviously increased the specific surface area. The effect of different TiCl3-montmorillonite ratios on the photocatalytic activity by degrading methylene blue in aqueous solution was investigated. TiO2-montmorillonite with a mass ratio of 0.2:1 showed the highest photocatalytic activity because of its relatively large specific surface area and suitable pore size distribution. Abstract:Nanosized titania particles consisting of anatase, rutile and brookite phases were synthesized under solvothermal conditions with different alcohols as solvents, hexamethylene tetramine (HMT) as precipitant as well as precursor of titanium trichloride. XRD, TEM, UV-Vis and XPS spectra were employed to characterize these samples. The effect of treatment solvent and HMT amount on the phase composition and photocatalytic activity of titania were investigated. It is found that anatase is easier to form at acidic condition, but rutile and brookite at basic condition, using methanol as solvent. The TiO2-N-x(x) with nitrogen doping in TiO2 is obtained under solvothermal conditions. The results of photocatalytic degradation to methyl orange show that the mixed crystallite of anatase and brookite has the best photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of hierarchically assembled titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructures is important for practical applications in environmental purification and solar energy conversion. We present here the fabrication of interconnected TiO2 nanotubes as a macroscopic bulk material by using a porous carbon nanotube (CNT) sponge as a template. The basic idea is to uniformly coat an amorphous titania layer onto the CNT surface by the infiltration of a TiO2 precursor into the sponge followed by a subsequent hydrolysis process. After calcination, the CNTs are completely removed and the titania is simultaneously crystallized, which results in a porous macrostructure composed of interconnected anatase TiO2 nanotubes. The TiO2 nanotube macrostructures show comparable photocatalytic activities to commercial products (AEROXIDE TiO2 P25) for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB). Moreover, the TiO2 nanotube macrostructures can be settled and separated from water within 12 h after photocatalysis, whereas P25 remains suspended in solution after weeks. Thus the TiO2 nanotube macrostructures offer the advantage of easy catalyst separation and recycle and can be a promising candidate for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A new non-hydrolytic approach was developed to synthesize anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with dominant {001} facets by solvothermal alcoholysis of TiF4, which was relatively green since the direct use of HF was avoided and less HF released from alcoholysis. These TiO2 nanocrystals displayed uniform shape and could be easily controlled owing to the smooth alcoholysis process. Using tert-butanol as the initial alcohol source, the total surface area was 103 m(2) g(-1) with small crystal sizes around 23 nm. By changing different alcohols, both the percentage of exposed {001} facets and the particle size could be adjusted. The results show that alcohols play important roles in the present strategy (1) oxygen donor to provide mild condition for crystal growth and (2) assistant agent to stabilize F species for dominant {001} facets. In further application, the absolute surface area of the {001} facets, instead of total surface area, has become the most important factor for influencing the activity of TiO2 crystals under photocatalytic selective oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde.

Abstract:Uniform and monodispersed TiO2 nanocrystals-assembled leaves-like nanosheets (TLNs) have been synthesized via a novel and direct hydrothermal method, i.e. a controlled hydrolysis of tetrabutyltitanate (TBOT) in ethanol without adding any surfactant reagents. The physical and chemical properties of TLNs were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra and BET surface area measurement. The photoelectrochemical performance of TLNs was characterized through photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurement. The photocatalytic activity of the TLNs was evaluated by photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) aqueous solution under simulated solar irradiation. The experimental results showed that the TLNs exhibited a much better photocatalytic activity than that of pure TiO2 (PT) and commercial TiO2 (P25).

Abstract:A facile solvothermal process combined with a precursor thermal transformation method has been developed for preparing porous TiO2 hollow nanospheres with a high surface area and a good thermal stability. The porous TiO2 hollow spheres were obtained by using TiOSO4 as a titanium source and carbon nanospheres as a sacrificial template. Their particle size, diameter and morphology can be readily controlled by varying growth parameters, including reaction temperature, time and reagent concentration. The calcination temperature of TiO2–C core-shell nanospheres was found to have a profound effect on the structure and properties of the final products. The photocatalytic activities of the products were evaluated by the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO). The TiO2 hollow spheres obtained from 450 °C thermal treatment exhibited higher photocatalytic activity than commercial Degussa P25 in the presence of Cr(VI). The possible photodegradation mechanism was also investigated.

Abstract:Meso-and macro-porous TiO2 were synthesized by ultrasonic induced solvothermal method. Octadecylamine as a soft template was used to direct the formation of porous structure. The as-prepared porous TiO2 was characterized by low angle and wide angle X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms and BET surface area. The energy influence of ultrasound and heat and concentration of nitric acid for post extraction on formation of porous structure were investigated. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 were investigated by degrading toluene gas under UV light. The results revealed that proper energy facilitates the formation of porous structure and too low concentration of nitric acid cannot extract template from pores. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 with porous structure are higher than those of nonporous ones.

Abstract:Morphology and crystalline-phase control of titanium dioxide is a crucial issue in the study of photocatalytic activity. Here, we present a facile synthetic path combing the solgel method with solvothermal treatment to form hybrid mesoporous and microporous TiO2. The TiO2 precursor was obtained by the solgel method, and this was self-assembled into mesopores and micropores by NH4F corrosiveness on the surface of TiO2 under hydrothermal conditions. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterise the titania powders. The results reveal that NH4F not only improved the formation of the crystallised anatase phase but also served as a corrosive agent modified on the surface of TiO2 precursors. Defective voids among these nanoparticles formed micropores by hydrothermal reaction of NH4F and TiO2 over a long time. When the NH4F concentration was 1.0 mol.L-1, micropores became dominant,and few mesopores were obtained, and this results in a smaller average pore size. Thus, mesoporous and microporous structures were formed. Furthermore, these crystallised mesoporous and microporous anatase titania nanoparticles with uniform structure and high surface area have a higher photocatalytic activity for azo dye degradation under near UV irradiation.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline TiO2 samples with mesoporous structure were prepared via a solvothermal treatment of surfactant-stabilized TiO2 sols. The samples were obtained from media of different acidities including nitric acid, deionized water, and ammonia (denoted as HT-1, HT-2 and HT-3, respectively). These samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2-sorption (BET surface area), micro-Raman spectroscopy, infrared absorption spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The photocatalytic activities of the samples were tested by the self-photosensitized degradation of an azo dye, Mordant Yellow 10 (MY), in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The results reveal that all three samples have high surface area and are pure anatase phase. The sample prepared in nitric acid medium possesses the most ideal mesoporous structure and also exhibits a blue shift in the Raman spectrum. All three samples show much higher photocatalytic activity than the commercial P-25. The activity order of the three samples is HT-1>HT-2>HT-3.

Abstract:Anatase porous TiO2 nanowires were synthesized via simple in situ hydrothermal treatment of the amorphous anodic TiO2 nanotubes in urea aqueous solution at 70 degrees C. The morphology transformation process was also analyzed so that hydroxide induced dissolution-recrystallization mechanism was proposed. Due to the coarse surface and porous structure, the porous TiO2 nanowires possess a large surface area of 267.56 m(2) g(-1), which is almost 4 times higher than that of amorphous anodic TiO2 nanotubes. The photocatalytic properties of the porous TiO2 nanowires towards MB, phenol and Rhodamine 6G were investigated. The porous TiO2 nanowires display better photocatalytic activity than that of TiO2 nanotubes or Degussa P25. The enhanced photocatalytic activity is attributed to the porous structure and the large specific surface area. Such porous TiO2 nanowires maybe considered as an ideal photocatalyst for the rapid photodegradation of organic pollutant in water. Furthermore, this facile, low-cost and environmentally friendly method is highly expected to innovate the design and fabrication of highly photoactive porous TiO2 nanowires, which have potential applications in photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Abstract:Rice-like TiO2 nanocrystals with high specific surface area are synthesized by a facile and mild solvothermal route without further thermal annealing. These nanocrystals are aggregated to form a secondary mesoporous structure. The TiO2 samples possess a large surface area of 269.9m2/g, which is approximately 5 times higher than what is observed for P25. It is found that solvothermal temperature alters the crystallinity, surface area and porous structure of the sample. Photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanocrystals for degradation of gaseous benzene is significantly higher than that of P25. The 1D structure and high porosity contribute to the superior photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:A novel class of titania nanotubes (TNTs) have been prepared by ultrasonic assisted sol-hydrothermal method using tetrabutyl titanate and ethanol as the precursors. The physicochemical characteristics of the catalysts were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, Differential Scanning Calorimeters-Thermogravimetric Analysis (DSC-TG) and UV–vis absorption spectra. The photocatalytic activity of the products was evaluated in terms of reactive brilliant red X-3B in an aqueous solution under UV irradiation for 1h. The results showed that the anatase nanotubes prepared by ultrasonic assisted sol-hydrothermal method exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity. The degradation rate of reactive brilliant X-3B could be up to 96%. The high degradation rate was attributed to the good crystalline pure-phase structure of nanotubes caused by ultrasound. Furthermore, the large surface areas also played an important role in the high degradation rate.

Abstract:N-doped TiO2 nanotubes with high photocatalytic activity were prepared by the combination of sol-gel process with hydrothermal treatment. The prepared materials are characterized with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and UV-vis spectra. Photocatalytic performance of the N-doped TiO2 nanotubes is studied by testing the degradation rate of methyl orange under UV irradiation. Obtained results indicate that N-doped TiO2 nanotubes have high catalytic activity for photocatalytic oxidation.

Abstract:A one-step solvothermal method was used to prepare TiO(2)/halloysite composites. TiO(2) nanoparticles were deposited on the platform of the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, and TEM were applied to investigate the structures and morphologies of the resultant samples. The as-prepared TiO(2)/HNTs photocatalyst exhibits pH sensibility on the degradation of methanol and a higher photocatalytic activity on the degradation of acetic acid. The combination of the photocatalytic property of TiO(2) and the unique structure of halloysite endowed this material with a bright perspective in degradation of organic pollutant.
