Abstract:This paper focuses on optimization of kinematic chain to reduce force-induced error in the scheme design phase of a five-axis machine tool. After conducting process planning on the machining target, local deformation of motion units in cutting positions is considered using a geometric way. A mathematical model is then established describing the influence of local deformation error on the general machining error through homogeneous transformation matrices. Conceptual model of the machine tool is constructed to obtain deformation distribution using static FEA. Error sensitivity coefficients are then calculated and compared among all alternative kinematic chains to select the optimized scheme. The proposed method is verified through a designing example of a five-axis vertical machining center. The optimized kinematic chain could lower the magnitude of deformation sensitivities by 9.69% and increase error equalization variance by 71.25% compared to the conventional method.

Abstract:A novel adjustable focal-length optical adaptive micro-mirror based on bi-mental effect is presented. Compared with traditional deformable micro-mirror, micro-mirror fabricated by this method has the advantage of low driving voltage and large driving force. Besides, it is easy to be fabricated. Micro-machining processes such as oxygenation, photolithography, chemical etching and sputtering are experimented. A 4 × 4 bi-metal adjustable focal-length micro-mirror arrays have been completed. Each unit has an area of 3 mm × 3 mm with the thickness of silicon 60μm and aluminum film 150 nm. Deformable mirror area covers 79% of the total mirror area which is 100%. Dynamic performance of adjustable focal-length micro-mirror is tested using laser wave-front interferometer. Experiment results demonstrate that the micro-mirror can produce uni-directional continuous deformation with the maximum deformation of 15.8 and nonlinearity lag of 27%. It can work at 0-2.5 V with an adjustable focal length ranging from ∞ to 0.036 m.

Abstract:The paper overviews various supporting ways for large-size movement mirrors, and the advantages and disadvantages of the support methods are summarized. Some valuable optimization methods to improve support effects are also introduced. As a case study, a radial segment-face contact support method is proposed to solve the support problem for a large-aperture rotating prism, and a two-step optimization method is implemented to improve the support effects. The surface deformations under different support separated angles are evaluated. The overview can be as good references for large-size mirror support design in similar opto-mechanical systems especially under movement conditions.

Abstract:The paper presents a panel-based robotic mannequin for garment fitting. This robot can deform the shell panels and change their positions to simulate different consumers' body shapes. Then it will replace consumers to try on the clothes remotely, so as to avoid the troubles caused by geographical location. This paper mainly introduces the structural design and optimization of a new fitting robot, which comprises the optimization of the shell panels, the design of the mechanical structure, and the optimization of the control system. Furthermore, to obtain the fitting results of different body postures, we design a detachable arm structure. Based on the above work, we develop a new prototype of the female robotic mannequin. The testing results show that the accuracy of the deformation and the stability of the whole structure are improved. The fitting robot can accurately simulate most of the female human bodies and smoothly complete the remote fitting process. It can be applied to garment e-commerce, personalized customization and virtual fitting.

Abstract:Flexure hinges have been studied since 1960s. Recent intensive interest in MEMS makes flexure hinges our research focus again. As, an important part in micro-positioner, flexure hinges influence the accuracy, stability and durability of the entire system. This paper focuses on shape optimization of flexure hinges in an effort to obtain optimized accuracy and stress. We modeled several groups of flexure hinges, including right circular hinges, elliptical hinges, corner-filleted hinges and right angle hinges, with same stiffness by ANSYS, their accuracy and maximum stress were then compared, and results were presented and discussed, a conclusion was finally drawn.

Abstract:To reduce dynamic deflection and suppress vibration during the end-milling process of large thin-plate workpiece, an intelligent mirror-milling machining system is established in this paper. This system includes two movable support heads, and both of them are periodically repositioned which affix themselves to the workpiece by the way of vacuum adsorption in order to improve stability of the workpiece during the milling process. One critical point of this task is how to ensure support heads move reasonably and simultaneously and support to the workpiece stably. Therefore, this paper developed a practical method for the planning of support head moving path (SHMP) under a given cutting path. This method involves the finite difference method (FDM), artificial neural network (ANN), and genetic algorithm (GA). In particular, dynamic vibration response of four-edge clamped thin-plate workpiece is calculated with FDM; to reduce computing time, ANN is applied to establish the relation between support head location and workpiece dynamic vibration amplitude; and as SHMP is a multi-objective optimization problem, GA is implemented with the classical weighted sum method to find a solution. Finally, this method is verified and simulated under two specific cases; the final paths obviously show that there will always be at least one support head support workpiece during the machining process.

Abstract:The support structure of large aperture mirror of space remote sensor is the key of the space remote sensor development. In this paper, the size of the large aperture mirror is Phi 700mm, which is supported in the back of mirror with 3 points, the composite structure of ball joint and flexible groove is adopted in support structure which can guarantee the mirror surface satisfy the requirement of optical design under the coupled load of gravity and heat. At the same time, the mirror subassembly should have a high enough stiffness through the reasonable lightweight to ensure the camera in transportation and launch process can withstand severe vibration condition. In order to validate the rationality of the design, the finite element analysis is done to the mirror subassembly, which indicates that the shape error variation of mirror RMS is better than lambda/50 and PV is better than lambda/10 in the coupling load of gravity and heat, and the first natural frequency of the mirror subassembly is higher than the design requirements. Dynamics calculation results of mirror subassembly consistent with mechanics experiment results; the surface precision of the mirror subassembly obtained from the ZYGO interferometer consistent with the results of finite element analysis and meets the design requirements.

Due to its high specific stiffness and good environmental adaptability, metal material mirror was suitable for application in airborne photoelectric load as the main optical system. In this paper, through the research on the kinematic support form of metal mirror, the flexibility of flexible joint form was optimized, and the design of aperture 190 mirror was carried out, so that the shape accuracy under the action of gravity reaches 1 / 50λ, which better meets the design requirements of aviation photoelectric load.

The design of structure was put forward from the theory of electrostatic actuating and some aspect associated with the process such as etching and bonding were discussed in details. A mirror was fabricated successfully, whose effective reflecting surface was 30 mm×30 mm and the number of electrostatic actuators was 49.

Abstract:Deformable mirror is a widely used wavefront corrector in adaptive optics system, especially in astronomical, image and laser optics. A new structure of DM-3D DM is proposed, which has removable actuators and can correct different aberrations with different actuator arrangements. A 3D DM consists of several reflection mirrors. Every mirror has a single actuator and is independent of each other. Two kinds of actuator arrangement algorithm are compared: random disturbance algorithm (RDA) and global arrangement algorithm (GAA). Correction effects of these two algorithms and comparison are analyzed through numerical simulation. The simulation results show that 3D DM with removable actuators can obviously improve the correction effects.

Abstract:We present two concepts of deformable mirror to compensate for first order optical aberrations. Deformation systems are designed using both elasticity theory and Finite Element Analysis in order to minimize the number of actuators. Starting from instrument specifications, we explain the methodology to design dedicated deformable mirrors. The work presented here leads to correcting devices optimized for specific functions. The Variable Off-Axis paraboLA concept is a 3-actuators, 3-modes system able to generate independently Focus, Astigmatism and Coma. The Correcting Optimized Mirror with a Single Actuator is a 1-actuator system able to generate a given combination of optical aberrations.

Stiffness Analysis and Optimization of Parallel Robots Used in Secondary Mirror Mount for Telescope

Abstract:This paper presents the stiffness analysis and design of some 3-DOF parallel robots used in second mirror mount for telescope. First, based on the Screw Theory, we designed dozens of structure types, and in this study we picked 3 types, RCU, PUU, and UCU(UP). Second, their stiffness against gravity was analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA) method. The key issues of how the stiffness varying with height angle were investigated. Finally, the regular pattern of stiffness variation with radius ratio of the moving and the static platforms was examined. Study finds: Under low height angles, the stiffness of 3-DOF parallel manipulators is much worse than 6-DOF parallel manipulators; Adding constraining leg can significantly improve the stiffness of 3-DOF parallel manipulators; The stiffness values of 3-DOF parallel manipulators are highly affected by the radius ratio of the moving and the static platforms, and this will provide guidance for optimal design.

Abstract:The influence function of the actuators can be expressed as a Gaussian function. The exponent of the Gaussian function influences the reconstruction precision of the deformable mirror (DM). A finite element model of the PZT stacked array DM with 55 actuators was created, and each actuator was separately controlled. The influence of the structural parameters of the DM on the Gaussian index and coupling coefficient was investigated. Based on the simulation results, the design of the DM was optimized. In addition, using simulation, the fatigue life and working bandwidth of the new model were studied. Specific aberration surfaces were reconstructed. The results showed that the optimized DM had a smaller reconstruction error compared with the pre-optimized model. This study can be used as a reference for the design of DMs.

Abstract:In order to realize the high-precision assembly of the mirror of the aeronautical optical system, a semi-kinematic flexible support structure applied to the airborne field was designed. This paper studies the support principle and assembly method of flexible support of mirror. Firstly, according to the kinematic theory of space mechanism, the spatial degrees of freedom of the mirror were theoretically analyzed. Then, in view of the difficulties encountered in the assembly and application of the mirror, a flexible support structure was designed. Then, the design results were verified by means of finite element analysis. Finally, the processing and assembly of a flexible support structure of the mirror was completed, and the relevant experimental tests were carried out. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the mirror after assembly with flexible support structure is better than λ/50 (λ = 632.8 nm), and the mass is less than 2 kg. The model fundamental frequency modal of the whole assembly is 645 Hz, which is higher than the design requirement. All simulation and test results show that the flexible support structure works well, meets the requirements of aviation optical system, and has the advantages of simple assembly, high precision, stability and reliability.

Abstract:In order to realize the ultra-light design of large-caliber splicing mirrors, based on the analysis of the existing design schemes, a method of integrated mirror support and drive design is proposed, combined with mirror optical precision and surface accuracy and position adjustment. Accuracy requirements, support and drive adopt a structure based on a six-bar parallel mechanism, and use flexible links to achieve long-term elongation or shortening of the degree of freedom release; high-precision mirror shape requirements and posture adjustment requirements for support and drive the integrated structure proposes the strict constraints, that is, the objective of maximizing the range of attitude adjustment and the optimal shape of the mirror in the deformation range of the flexible structure. Therefore, a multi-parameter integrated analysis method based on optical requirements is proposed, which utilizes multi-software synthesis. The analysis accurately obtains the specific parameters of the flexible link, ensuring that the precision of the high-precision surface of the mirror remains unchanged when the support rod adjusts the posture of the mirror with high precision. The analysis results show that the stitching mirror assembly with support and drive integrated design has a fundamental frequency of >200Hz, and the mirror shape is better than 12nm. It can realize the rotation range of the mirror by ±48″ and the adjustment accuracy within 25um.

Abstract:This study concerns the problem of integrated optimization of structure and control based on a fast steering mirror, aiming to achieve simultaneous optimization of the mechanical structure and control system. The traditional research and development path of the fast steering mirror involves a lengthy process from the initial design to the final physical manufacture. In the prior process, it was necessary to produce physical prototypes for repeated debugging and iterative optimization to achieve design requirements, but this approach consumes a significant amount of time and cost. To expedite this process and reduce unnecessary experimental costs, this study proposes an integrated optimization of structure and control (IOSC) method. With the use of IOSC, it is possible to achieve simultaneous optimization of structure and control. Specifically, the use of non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) obtains globally optimal controller parameters and mechanical structure parameters under certain performance indices. This achieves an effective balance between the resonance frequency generated by the system and the working bandwidth, providing a high-precision reference for the research and development of fast steering mirrors.

Abstract:The weight of the primary mirror increases as the aperture of ground-based telescopes increases, making it more challenging to maintain the positional stability and surface accuracy of the solid primary mirror. Consequently, a 2 m lightweight silicon carbide (SiC) mirror and an optimization method were proposed in this study. The relationship between the gravitational deformation of the mirror and its thickness and number of supports was derived based on force analysis of the mirror; the thickness of the mirror and the appropriate number of supports were obtained as initial parameters for optimization. The back structure of the mirror was designed in a lotus pattern to improve its rigidity. Numerous structural parameters were classified into major and non-major parameters based on the results of a sensitivity analysis. The non-major and major structural parameters were optimized using a Latin hypercube design method and a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm, respectively. The optimized 2 m lightweight SiC mirror had a mass of 119 kg and an areal density of 38.7 kg/m2. The surface figure error root-mean-square (RMS) in the vertical state of the optical axis and the first modal resonance of the mirror assembly calculated using finite element analysis were 11.3 nm and 76.5 Hz, respectively. Modal tests of the mirror assembly were conducted using the hammering method, achieving a maximum relative frequency error of 7.4% compared with the simulation results. The optimized 2 m SiC mirror was over 50% lighter than traditional passive Zerodur mirrors of the same size.

A Support Structure for A Compliant Deformable Mirror

Abstract:The Navy's ground-based optical interferometer requires 10 discrete reflections for each of its six stations that transport stellar radiation into a six-way beam combiner where the modulated beams are overlapped in a collinear fashion and fringes obtained for analysis. Wavefront aberrations, introduced at each reflection from non-perfect mirrors, reduce the quality of fringe contrast and adversely affect the final science results. In practice, mirror fabrication and mounting methods generate small surface irregularities that produce aberrations in the reflected wavefront beam. Under multiple reflection scenarios, these errors do not necessarily cancel one another, and can increase the resultant wavefront distortion. In a previous paper, we showed a single-force actuator acting on the back surface of an 8-inch diameter Zerodur® mirror will achieve a canceling deformation in the reflective surface that substantially reduces the combined wavefront aberrations resulting from a 7-reflection beam. Our finite element model demonstrated that the peak-to-valley difference can be reduced from 210 nm to 55 nm. In this paper, we extend our previous work to include a support structure to contain the deforming mirror and analyze its interaction and effect on the corrected wavefront. Our design used the mechanical advantage gained from a tuned flexure plate with a simple motorized screw actuator applied to the back mirror surface to achieve an 87:1 deflection ratio on the front mirror surface. A practical design is proposed, the support structure and mirror analyzed using the finite element method, and the results presented and discussed.

Abstract:Summary A stabilized zoom system with deformable mirrors (DMs) was designed for continuous optical zoom. In order to adjust the focal length and expand the field angle, the characteristic surface shapes of the DMs composed of the low‐order and high‐order Zernike polynomials were provided. The maximum peak‐to‐valley (PV) value at the center of the surface shape is 80 μm. This work presents a piezoelectrically‐actuated deformable mirror (PADM) with large displacement for a stabilized zoom system. The COMSOL simulation was conducted to obtain the desired design by matching and optimizing structural parameters. The maximum displacement of PADM was more than 80 μm. The fitting results by the steepest descent algorithm (SD) showed that the RMS values of the residual surface shapes were 1 of 7 to 1 of 4 of their PV values, and the PV values of the residual surface shapes were less than 1 of 10 of the PV values of the target surface shapes.

Mechanics Based Design of Structures and Machines

Abstract:In this paper, the biaxial flexural mount is presented according to the requirements of the large aspect ratio mirror of an off-axis three-mirror anastigmatic (TMA) space-borne telescope, and the process of the optimal design of the flexural mount structure is discussed in detail. From the perspective of mechanics-based design of space-borne mirror assembly structure and integrated optical-mechanical analysis, the optimal axial mounting position, the optimal mounting angle and the optimal structural critical dimensions of the flexure hinge were determined to improve the surface shape accuracy. Finally, the mechanical vibration test further proved the rationality of the structure design and the accuracy of the simulation analysis. The flexural mount proposed in this paper is can be applied to other reflective optics with high surface figure requirements. The optimization method proposed in this paper can also be applied to the optimization of other forms of flexural mount.
