Abstract:A novel and simple technique for the measurement of time delay in the optical fiber by a free-running laser is proposed and demonstrated. The fiber to be measured was spliced to an erbium-doped fiber so as to form a ring-cavity laser. The mode beating frequency of the laser was measured to determine the round-trip time delay. A Novel Method to Simultaneously Measure the Straightness

Abstract:A precise two-degree-of-freedom measuring system (2DMS) is developed based on single-mode optical fiber, LD, cube corner retroreflector and four-quadrant photodetector (4-Q), and the simultaneous on-line measurement of lateral and vertical direction straightness errors of the linear stage is carried out. The moving part is wireless, which eliminates any errors introduced by pushing and pulling the wires. The sensitivity of the straightness error measurement can be improved by a factor of 2 with the cube corner retroreflector. This fiber-based optically aligned beam is used to establish a reference line for the straightness measurement of any mechanical system. 4-Q detector is used to receive the laser beam. A chip microcomputer is developed to conduct all data acquisition and signal processing. The beam drift influence can be removed in the greatest extent from the system. The experiments on the measurement system stability, repeatability and its comparison with the HP5528 double-frequency laser interferometer are carried out.

Abstract:Fiber-delay measurement is one of the key fundamental technologies in numerous fields. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-precision and concise optical time delay measurement system based on the technique of linear optical sampling, reaching the precision better than 100 fs under averaging. The use of only two optical frequency combs without locking the carrier-envelope-offset frequency greatly simplifies the structure of the time-delay measurement system. We also experimentally investigate the current limitations on the precision of the system. The timing jitter noises of two sources are mainly non-common mode, and are both restricted to the frequency sources. Our results indicate that the proposed device can measure fiber length fluctuations below 10 $\mu {\rm{m}}$, paving the way for further analyses of the external disturbances on the fiber link.

Abstract:A simple method to precisely measure fiber length has been experimentally demonstrated by using a mode-locked fiber laser configuration. Since the transit time in a cavity is exactly proportional to the cavity length, it is easy to obtain the fiber length from the generation of mode-locked pulses in the fiber laser with a long-range nonlinear optical loop mirror that includes the measured fiber. Our new method has a large measurement range, over hundreds of kilometers, and a high resolution, of the order of centimeters, as well as no measurement dead zone.

Abstract:Due to its properties of low attenuation, high capacity and reliability, the widespread optical fiber network has become an attractive option for long-distance transmission. The signal transmission delay in fiber, as an essential characteristic, becomes a significant parameter that has broad effects on the performance of optical communications, fiber timing distribution systems, phased array antennas, and some other large-scale scientific or engineering facilities. We report a novel method for signal transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. Based on phase discrimination, dual-frequency locking and measurement, it achieves a very high measurement precision of 0.2 ps with a 0.1 ps resolution, and dynamic range over 50 km. Using a phase shift and frequency locking technique, the measurement ambiguity can be resolved within only a few seconds. It greatly simplifies the measurement procedure and requires much simpler equipment. A good agreement in measurement results with the conventional pulsed method is obtained as well.

Abstract:An approach to measuring time delay with high speed and high precision is proposed based on using complementary frequency-swept light and frequency-shifted dechirping. The complementary frequency-swept light is generated by up-converting a linear frequency-modulated waveform into the optical domain, which sweeps linearly and fast. The frequency-shifted dechirping operation and a phase-noise-elimination algorithm are utilized to suppress the phase noise of the optical source, which enables high-precision time delay measurement without limitation of the coherence time on the measurement range. In the experiment, the bandwidth of the linear frequency-modulated waveform is set to be 4 GHz. The time delay of a spool of single-mode fiber with a length of 1 km is measured by using two different laser sources with linewidths of 1.9 MHz and 27 kHz. The standard deviations of the measured time delay are 0.42 ps and 0.52 ps, respectively, indicating that the optical phase noise has a negligible impact on the measurement results. Allan deviation is used to calculate the relative measurement errors, which are 1×10 -7 and 4×10 -9 within a measurement duration of 30 μs and 4.53 ms, respectively. Besides, the time delay change of an optical tunable delay line with a tuning step of 4 ps is clearly distinguished. Hence, this scheme can achieve ultrafast and high-precision time delay measurement within a large range.

Abstract:Optical fiber time delay system has been widely used in optical-controlled phased array antenna, radar distributed network, interferometric optical fiber hydrophone and high-speed photoelectric chip. These applications require high-accuracy and high-stability time delay generated by the system. Time delay measurement directly determines the precision and resolution of the system. Therefore, high-precision time delay measurement method is of great significance in developing the optical fiber delay system. In this paper, progress and problems of optical fiber time delay measurements are discussed. A new method of precisely measuring the time delay in optical fiber is proposed. We use the frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) to avoid the discrepancy between measuring range and measuring precision, which exists in both time-of-flight (TOF) method and phase discrimination approach. An intensity modulated 1064 nm laser signal is used as a light source. The modulation frequency is tuned from 10 MHz to 200 MHz in steps of 0.5 MHz. The spectrum of echo signal is obtained by measuring the amplitudes and phases of echo signals at different frequency points. The delay information is obtained via the inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT). The precision of delay measurement in our method is determined by step size of frequency variation, and a higher-precision measurement is realized by using interpolation zero algorithm. Since our method is not to modulate the optical frequency, but to control the frequency of the modulation signal loaded on the electro-optic modulator, it is easy to achieve the high-precision and high-linearity frequency modulation. In this paper, theoretical analysis and time delay measurement are used to compare the FDR method with conventional TOF measurement method. The accurate measurement of 33-200 ps is realized, and measurement error is lower than 7 ps. We also design an incremental measurement experiment to study the resolution of the FDR method, which achieves a delay resolution of 3.3 ps. The influence of temperature jitter is analyzed to prove the reliability of experimental results. It proves that the FDR method has a higher measuring accuracy than the TOF method. The time delay measurement precision can be further improved by expanding the modulation bandwidth. Our method is to be applied to an optical fiber delay system to improve the precision and resolution of system delay.

Abstract:Time-delay technology is widely used in machine vision, optical communication, laser radar (LIDAR), photoelectric detection and other fields. Compared with electric time-delay technology, optical fiber time-delay technology has many advantages under the condition of large delay time, such as high delay accuracy, good delay stability, small jitter, strong anti-electromagnetic interference ability, and less environmental impact, etc. It has attracted much attention in related fields. In order to achieve a larger delay time and a higher delay accuracy, this paper focused on the high-precision CNC (computerized numerical control) optical fiber delay system applied to laser echo simulator. The system consisted of 16 delay fibers, 16 optical fiber jumpers and 17 optical switches. By using binary gated mode, the delay of 0-64553ns was achieved and the laser echo of 0-5km was simulated. Using 10kHz-100MHz modulated laser, the actual length of 16 delay optical fibers was accurately measured by phase method, and the measurement error was less than 28.6mm. Aiming at the problem that the accuracy of long optical fiber cutting was poor in engineering, a compensation method for changing the delay resolution of the system is proposed, so that the delay precision of the whole system is controlled within 0.984 ns. The effects of temperature changes on the refractive index of the fiber and the length of the fiber on the system delay time are analyzed. The experimental device developed can achieve a delay of 0-64553 ns, a delay resolution of 0.984 ns, and a delay measurement accuracy of 0.14 ns. The system has been successfully applied.

Abstract:We report a novel method for multichannel transmission delay measurement in optical fibers. The fiber transfer delay measurement is converted into frequency measurement. As a key technique, a simple ambiguity resolving process based on phase discrimination and frequency locking is used to overcome the contradiction between measurement accuracy and system complexity. A real-time calibration method is employed to detect and eliminate system delay fluctuation. It achieves two-channel fiber transmission delay measurement with a high accuracy of 0.1 picosecond and dynamic range over tens of kilometers.

Abstract:Optical fiber is the cornerstone of the contemporary inter-network and has produced profound and far-reaching effect on modern information society ever since it was invented. The detection of key parameters of optical fiber such as length, refractive index, and chromatic dispersion is of great significance to ensure the quality and security of communication network. Here, a synchronous, fast, and high-precision measurement method for the length and dispersion of optical fibers is proposed, where the time-of-flight measurement and spectral interference are organically combined using an optical frequency comb (OFC) with the assistance of a modulated narrow linewidth single-frequency laser. The length and the dispersion coefficient distribution can be preciously obtained directly and simultaneously by measuring only single-frame interference spectrum. The excellent time–frequency characteristics of the OFC and our unique algorithm enable the realization of extremely high measurement accuracy and resolution: a resolution of @ 500 m and an accuracy of 1.5 cm ( relatively) @ 11 000 m, as well as a dispersion measurement accuracy of 0.5%. The method boasts rapid measurement, ample bandwidth, elimination of scanning, and exceptional precision, making it highly applicable in both optical communication and optical fiber sensing systems.

Abstract:A novel method, to the best of our knowledge, of fiber transfer delay (FTD) measurement based on phase quantization and delay synthesis is proposed and demonstrated. By detecting the differential phase shifts of a set of frequency-multiplied RF signals transmission through the fiber link with and without the FTD under the test, the ${2}\pi $2π phase ambiguity problem can be solved. To avoid the phase quantization error near the digital quantization boundary, a self-check and error-correction method is proposed so as to greatly improve the reliability of measurement. In the experiment, the measurement repeatability around 0.018 ps within a period of 80 s is achieved for a back-to-back fiber link, and a test resolution of 0.03 ps is proved with a motorized tunable delay line. The system is available for measurement of a large FTD range up to 100 µs with no dead zone.

Abstract:The principle of time delay measurement system using phase-sensitive optical low-coherence reflectometry(OLCR) is analyzed and the mathematic model is given.The measurement system based on non equilibrium Michelson interferometer is established,using ASE broadband light of EDFA as the source,and the time delay of photonic crystal fiber from 1540 nm to 1560 nm is measured with accuracy about 0.14 ps.In OLCR system,the reflected light from the end face of optical device is commonly used for interference with reference light.However,for the time delay measurement of fiber and so on,the transmission light is a more convenient choice,as shown in this paper.

Abstract:Laser frequency combs, which are composed of a series of equally-spaced coherent frequency components, have triggered revolutionary progress for precision spectroscopy and optical metrology. Length/distance is of fundamental importance in both science and technology. In this work, we describe a ranging scheme based on chirped pulse interferometry. In contrast to the traditional spectral interferometry, the local oscillator is strongly chirped which is able to meet the measurement pulses at arbitrary distances, and therefore the dead zones can be removed. The distances can be precisely determined via two measurement steps based on time-of-flight method and synthetic wavelength interferometry, respectively. To overcome the speed limitation of the optical spectrum analyzer, the spectrograms are stretched and detected by a fast photodetector and oscilloscope, and consequently mapped into the time domain in real time. The experimental results indicate that the measurement uncertainty can be well within 2 $\upmu$m, compared with the reference distance meter. The Allan deviation can reach 0.4 $\upmu$m at averaging time of 4 ns, 25 nm at 1 $\upmu$s, and can achieve 2 nm at 100 $\upmu$s averaging time. We also measure a spinning disk with grooves of different depths to verify the measurement speed, and the results show that the grooves with about 150 m/s line speed can be clearly captured. Our method provides a unique combination of non-dead zones, ultrafast measurement speed, high precision and accuracy, large ambiguity range, and with only one single comb source. This system could offer a powerful solution for the field measurements in practical applications in future.

Abstract:To fully optimize the operation of a high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) facility and to offer opportunities for time-resolved experiments, a highly accurate synchronization between an electron bunch and a seeded laser is required. Thus, a high-precision and high-resolution beam arrival and flight time measurement system is built at the Shanghai soft X-ray FEL (SXFEL) facility. For the SXFEL, a beam arrival time resolution better than 100 fs is required. A phase cavity-based detection scheme for this measurement has already been adopted at the SXFEL. To further optimize system performance, the impacts of clock jitter, trigger jitter, and signal analysis length on the measurement uncertainties are analyzed, and related subsystems are upgraded and optimized accordingly. The beam arrival time is successfully measured, and the initial measurement uncertainty is better than 45 fs. Furthermore, a dual-cavity mixing scheme is realized to measure the beam flight time or pseudo-beam arrival time, and the measurement resolution of the beam flight time using this technique is 13 fs.

Abstract:Since the accuracy of laser ranging depends on the accuracy of time measurement,this paper introduces a method to improve the accuracy of time measurement.Under the control of a Field Programming Gate Array(FPGA),the electric signal is transported into the CLK port of a D flip-flop through a delay circuit,the laser sends a laser beam to the target and the target reflects the laser beam back to the photoelectric converter.Then,the laser beam is changed to an electric signal and transported to the D port of D flip-flop.By adjusting the delay time of electric signal produced by a delay chip and mechanical displacement,the laser makes the signal of input ports of D flip-flop arrive at the target at the same time.Therefore,the delay time can be utilized to determine the time of laser arriving the target.Furthermore,the FPGA is used to count the pulse of a constant temperature crystal oscillator with 100MHz,the MC100EP195is used to delay and then the accuracy of time measurement is improved to 0.3ps by the mechanical location method.The experimental results show that themeasurement accuracy of the target in 1km has reached to 0.1mm,which means that the method can satisfy the requirements of high-precision ranging.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact signal transmission delay measurement system in optical fibers. The frequency of a microwave signal is locked to the signal transmission delay which can be obtained in frequency domain. With a frequency-scanning ambiguity resolving system, the signal transmission delay can be precisely determined. The system delay fluctuation is monitored in real-time and subtracted from the measurement result. This method achieves sub-picosecond uncertainty.
